Error code -36 -- Is my hard drive about to fail?

Hello:
I am using SuperDuper to backup, and today, I got an error saying that backup failed because of an "input/output" error concerning an mp3 file.
Someone at SuperDuper suggested I try to duplicate that file using Finder and see what happened.
Sure enough, when I tried to duplicate the file using Finder, I got an "Error Code -36" message saying that the file cannot be read or written.
I then chose another file (also an mp3 within the same album) and it, too, failed. All others were OK.
But then, I went back and again tried to duplicate the original bad file, and this time I was successful.
Then, I deleted the one bad file, and tried to backup to my external hard drive using SuperDuper...and I was successful.
However, the person at Super Duper says my internal hard drive is about to fail.
Can that be true? On an 18-month old iMac?
I ran Disk Utility/Verify Disk, and it says the Hard Drive appears OK.
Any advice?
Thanks!

I have a Macbook pro 13" A1278. I purchased it around december 2010. I have a HHD 3.5" drive desktop select II 1.5TB. I purchased it around Febuary/March 2011 to use with my Macbook pro. I formatted it and moved all my files to there, I got it so my macbook's hard drive wouldn't brake and I lose everything on my macbook.
    Is there any fixes?

First, try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until the screen blacks out or you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."

  • Error Code BIOHD-2 During Hard Drive Test No Drives Detected

I am working on a HP Pavilion p6214y Desktop PC.
Just to list the specs for any unusual problems:
OS = Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit
MB = HP P/N: 513430-002 with AMD Athlon II x4 620 Quad Core
    HD = Western Digital 1TB
    Power = 350W LiteOn
    Ram = 8G
I am getting a blue screen that shows 4 options and I chose F9 for diagnostics and it gave me error code BIOHD-2 when checking the hard drive. It said no hard drives were detected. I have read on this here and checked the bios and it does not find the hard drive. So most people then say it is a bad hard drive. Although, I put the drive into another computer and I can pull files up from the hard drive and view them. It finds the drive just fine in the bios. I also put a working hard drive from that other computer into this HP and it will not recognize a hard drive through the bios.  Since the mother board is not recognizing hard drives throught the sata ports I would assume a mother board failure. I then put in a bootable usb version of Ubuntu 12.10. It runs smoothly and will access the internet and everything. So, from my small amount of knowledge, that means that the mother board is still ok, right?  I do not believe that I have read anywhere that the motherboard can go bad only at the sata ports. Does anyone know if that is a possibility? Is there a chance that I could salvage the situation by purchasing a set of recovery disks for this specific model and just reinstalling everything? I have heard that they are usually $20 so that would be a cheap trial and error.
Also, it will make it to the recovery screen sometimes on the blue screen, but it won't do anything because the keyboard stops working at that point.
    Just another tech junkie.

    Hi:
If you are running the ubuntu from the usb flash drive and not the hard drive, then yes, there is a definite possibility the motherboard sata controller has failed.
I believe the motherboard in your model is notorious for sata controller failures as is evidenced in these many threads below.

the hard drive evidently crashed in my notebook (it would not boot, recovery disks would not work) replaced the hard drive tonight ran the recovery disks (The ones I created when we bought the notebook) The process went smoothly until it was ready to reboot at the end of disk 3. I did not go back into the settings and changed the boot drive back to the hard drive so when notebook came back on it said there was not a boot disk in the cd rom. I started over went to settings and changed this and began recovery process again. First error 0xe0f00013  during disk 2 searched forums and couldnt find anything. Started over again this time the error was 0xe0ef000e during disk 2. What should I do now?
    Thanks

    Hi
There are few important things that you need to check please find the steps given below.
    1) Please go to Bios page and run the Hard drive & Memory test and check if both the test passes. Incase any test fails then you need to replace the part.
    2) Please contact HP Technical support and order the recovery disc or click on the weblink given below to order the disc online.

Did you format the drive for Mac use before you tried to use it as a backup drive?
Are you using Time Machine on the drive? You can't view the contents of its backup database and the only way to access the info is directly from the Time Machine app.

  • Help! Still get error message after installing new hard drive

The original problem is below and thought that it would help to include it to see the initial problem.
I went out and bought a new hard drive (500gb) and installed it in my laptop.  I went to use the restore disks and I got the same exact error mentioned below.  I used a set of disks that I copied from the original recovery disk and it still did the same.  What is the error code and how can I fix this!!
    Please help!!
I have a Satellite A215-S7444 laptop and everytime I go to restore the drive to it's factory settings using the Toshiba recovery wizard I get the following error:  ERROR: 03-EEEE-000, AN ERROR HAS OCCURRED, PRESS [OK] TO TURN OFF COMPUTER.
Just a note, I have used my recovery disks to restore the factory settings before with no problems at all, now I get this message.  All the files are accesible on the CD and I have no virus' on my computer.
Lastly, the image part of the drive (The one that is like 1.5 gb) which is usually visible is not any more and has not been for a bit when you should see it when you open "My computer".  You can however see it when I go to "Administrative Tools-Computer Management."  It states that the drive is Healthy (EISA Configuration), type is basic, and there is no file system associated with the drive and there is no drive letter for it either.

Thanks for your quick reply!  I was wondering if anyone would reply!
I made the copies on a suggetion that the original may be scratched or something so I figured what the heck?  I did format the hard drive though.  It is a Seagate 500gb hard drive.  I only formatted the whole drive and figured that the restore disks would make the additional partition.
Aside from that, it's the same error message that I had on the original drive.  The original drive and OS works (Vista), but I wanted to restore it because I just wanted to wipe everything and start clean.  What can be causing the error message, and what IS the error message?
Anymore suggestions or help would be great as I am in desperate need of getting my computer back to working.
    Thanks again for replying!

  • Disk Utility "Input - Output error" when attempting to erase Hard Drive

Hope that someone can point me in the right direction.
I bought an external hard drive for Windows a year back and loaded music onto it. I realized that I my MAC wasn't getting "Read / Write" privileges for the External Hard Drive, so I decided to try to Partition it and make it into a FAT readable device. It erased all data from my hard drive, but Disk Utility stopped the process and displayed an "input - output error".
Consequently, I can't initialize the external hard drive to make it usable on my MAC.
Can anyone point me in the right direction so I can "reformat" my external?
    Thanks!

    Hi all,
I'm having similar issues on a white macbook (2006 model). I ran into some trouble with it about a month ago, when on booting up, it showed only the folder with a question mark. Booting up from the original grey install DVD worked, so I thought the problem was most likely a faulty hard drive.
It's only after having this problem, that I came across this recall for possible faulty hard drives, that Apple offered:
    http://www.apple.com/support/macbook/hd/repairextension/
    Doh! Too late?
So, I got onto ebay and picked up a deal and received my new hard drive yesterday. I swapped out the original 80GB with 320GB, only to find the same input/output error described by the OP, here (also in a couple of other Apple discussion posts - see below).
Disk utility shows the new hard drive to be 2.3TB in size! Should be 320GB - but, this is also what others have described. See e.g.,:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/16090313#16090313
I've run the extended testing from the CD (holding down 'D' on boot-up) and it reported no problems. Also, similar to others experiences:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/16081818#16081818
So, what can the problem be?!?!?!?!?
In this post, JMPC suggests it has something to do with the size of the new internal hard drive....groan.....:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/16145560?tstart=0#16145560?tstart=0
    Can anyone confirm this?

  • Input/Output Error USB 2.0 External Hard Drive

I recently started having problems with an external hard drive setup that I did not have prior to trying to setup the drive to be compatible with Time Machine.
The hard drive enclosure that I have has 2 bays for two SATA drives. I have used this enclosure without any problems until I tried to get 1 drive to act as the backup drive for Time Machine and the other to be storage. I formatted them using Drive Genius. I used the option for GUILD or GUIL which it said was the better format for using with Time Machine.
The first problem I ran into since reformatting the drives is I got an "input/output" error the first couple times I connected the drive via USB to my Mac. I could still use the drives but I got weird errors every once in a while like "input/output error" or "device was not ejected properly" even though the device had not been unplugged.
Now the drives will not mount using OS 10.5.5. The drives show up when I open Disk Utility, but I cannot get them to mount. I have ran Disk Utility First Aid, and it says the drives are fine. There is one error that shows up when I run the "Repair Disk" feature. It reads "Invalid content in Journal". But Disk Utility also says "The volume was repaired successfully".
I have seen some posts when I do a search in google about this issue and it seems this is a known issue. Every suggestion I see says to insert your Tiger DVD and reformat the drive using that and the problem will be solved. The only problem with that is I have a lot of important files on the drive that I cannot lose. I had the files backed up until I moved them to the new drive a while back. Now I do not have a backup because I was in the process of switching to bigger drives and erased the old drives after doing so because everything was working fine.
I am hoping someone out there may have some suggestions (other than erasing the drive) to get my dives to mount so I can transfer the data off to another drive and reformat after.
    Thanks,
    Paul Rugg

I have similar problems with my USB external HD. Reformatting or repartitioning will not solve your problem. I've tried that 2 times already. The problem will reappear. My HD was running great until last month, when it suddenly without warning disappears from disk utility and the mac altogether. It not only dismounts itself, but also ejects itself, while still physically connected and the power is still on. The HD has its own power supply of course and is directly connected to one of the iMac USB ports. I have erased, repartitioned, disk verified, rebuild spotlight indexes, cleared PRAM and NVRAM, but nothing has solved the problem.
It is application independent, and not related to like iTunes as another post had suggested. Nothing to do with Mac applications. It seems to be USB related.
Messages in the Console seem to indicate something wrong with 'USB transactions passed their expiration point' and 'USB cannot enumerate something', but these statements are a bit cryptic to me. Perhaps an Apple system engineer can someday shed some light here.
    thanks much for any assistance.

  • Error Code -36 writing to external drives

    Hello all,
I was working in Final Cut Pro with a project, and I updated to 10.5.7 (dumb, I know). The next time I tried to open my project, it returned the message "The project is unreadable, or may be too new for this version of Final Cut."
    I restarted the computer,
    trashed preferences from Username>Library>Preferences>com.apple.finalcutpro.plist,
attempted to open backup files of the project (stored on my Macintosh HD, when the working project files are stored on a different internal media drive),
connected my laptop (running 10.5.6) and moved the project file (and backups) to the laptop, and attempted to open with it,
attempted to connect external drives to move the project files, and try from the laptop that way and I started receiving two errors: "The Finder cannot complete the operation because some data in 'Test_movie.mov' could not be read or written. (Error code -36), or another error about file names being too long.
I booted to the OSX disk, and ran disk utility, repairing all internal drives, and repairing disk permissions for my OSX drive.
    I tried firewire 400 & 800.
I formatted the external drives, and still received the message (actually, after formatting, the message changed from the "names too long" to the "Error Code -36" I listed above).
I don't know what else I can try. Older FCP projects as well as all types of documents and images seem to open just fine. Does anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Lawrence

I was getting the same "-36" error while trying to backup to a Lacie firewire external drive.
I had a lot of people telling me to re-format, erase, reinstall, run utility programs ... yada, yada, yada.
First off, test to see if it is the connection type (firewire). I reconnected the offending external drive via USB, restarted the drive and ... BINGO! ... all transfers went perfectly.
Once i knew it was the firewire connection and not the drive itself i simply unplugged my iSight camera (the only other firewire device connected to my machine), reconnected my external drive via firewire and the problem is now corrected.
Firewire buses seem to be very finicky things ... i would suggest eliminating all firewire devices from the machine (except, of course, the external drive you're trying to transfer to) and see if the problem goes away.
Like i said, i simply unplugged my iSight camera and the transfer to my external drive went perfect and my transfer rates went from an average of 4MB/sec to over 19MB/sec.
P.S. BTW - prior to the error and after i corrected the error by unplugging the iSight camera, my internal and external drives all checked out 100% on Disk Utility, Disk Warrior and TechTool Pro.

  • Errors during process of cloning hard drive

I recently purchased an external HD to make a backup of my internal HD , having had an OS crash which, thankfully, I was able to recover from.
I am using the application, Carbon Copy Cloner, which is working very well.
I cloned my internal HD to the new external HD and was able to boot up from the external HD perfectly.
The only problem I'm having is there are a couple errors occurring in the clone process. They are showing up in the console log.
Here are excerpts from the log:
"23:12:31 528: An error occurred while copying /.hotfiles.btree: Resource busy"
    and
"CFPropertyListCreateFromXMLData(): plist parse failed; the data is not proper UTF-8. The file name for this data could be:
    /System/Library/Frameworks/ScreenSaver.framework/Resources/EngineDefaults.plist
The parser will retry as in 10.2, but the problem should be corrected in the plist."
As I said, the drive cloning process still runs to completion and the clone operates as it should.
But these errors, perhaps insignificant perhaps not, still bother me.
Can anyone give me a hand on correcting them?
    Thanks,
    Dan Tee

    2. On using Pacifist is the procedure to extract the damaged file from the Hard Drive -- then install just that file from the Install DVD using Pacifist for both actions?
I'm not (obviously) BDAqua so s/he will correct me if I'm wrong, but the file which BDAqua is guessing stores directory information for the most frequently used files would be /.hotfiles.btree. I've not had a problem cloning a "live" system but one way to make absolutely certain this file is not in use during a clone would be to boot from a different volume. If you are booted from the source volume, there is always a chance that this file will be in use when CCC goes to copy it. Obviously, the greater the number of files you (or the system) is opening and closing, the greater the chances are that it will be in use. If you always see this, that might indicate something awry - not necessarily with CCC but it would raise questions about why the process which uses this file is doing so much. My system tends to be relatively quiet when I clone in the sense that I don't usually make active use of the computer during that time. This is just because CCC slows things down enormously so I prefer setting it to run overnight when CCC and I don't have to compete for CPU/memory resources etc. Having said that, the system is still running all kinds of things and accessing all kinds of files. I don't know whether the adjustment process BDAqua mentions applies to those files, too, or just user-level files. Maybe see what the experience of others, who make similar use of their computers during cloning to the use you make of yours, is - that might give you a sense of whether you are seeing this error too frequently or not.
I guess I'm a bit unsure about how to identify which file(s) to work on.
The error concerning /System/Library/Frameworks/ScreenSaver.framework/Resources/EngineDefaults.plist suggests that this file is damaged so this is the one you'd want to extract and reinstall using Pacifist. Since the version of the OS on your install disk will be older, you may also wish to check whether this file has been updated since and, if so, you could extract and reinstall it from the relevant update package instead (using Pacifist).
To check the file before proceeding, type the following in terminal:
    /usr/bin/plutil -lint /System/Library/Frameworks/ScreenSaver.framework/Resources/EngineDefaults.plist
You should get a message saying the file is "OK". If you don't, it is damaged and needs attention.

    Thanks for the help,

  • MacBook hard drive is full again. Replaced original hard drive with a Samsung SSD 840 Pro Series 256GB hard drive about 18 mo. ago, but my MacBook is now already saying that my hard drive is full again.  13in. Alum. Late 2008 MacBook

My MacBook hard drive is full again. I have a 13in. Aluminum, Late 2008 MacBook, and about 18 months ago (in October 2013), I replaced the original hard drive with a Samsung SSD 840 Pro Series 256GB hard drive. However, my MacBook is now already saying that my hard drive is full again.  When I check "System Information," under "Storage," it states the following:  Audio 52.02 GB; Movies 33.68GB; Photos 43.13GB; Apps 14.76 GB; Backups 174.4 MB; and Other 96.39GB.
Also, at home, I have an Apple Time Capsule 4th Generation 2TB that I use as my wireless router, and I also use it for automatic backup via Time Machine.  And when I first purchased Time Capsule, the first time I connected Time Capsule, Time Machine asked if I would like to use it to back up my files, and I clicked, "Use as Backup Disk."  And that's really all I've ever done with Time Capsule.
In addition, I also have a LaCie Porsche Design P'9223 1TB external hard drive.  I have copied my MacBook's hard drive onto my LaCie external hard drive.
Does anyone have any suggestions?  Obviously the Audio, Movies, Photos, and Apps are taking up a lot of space... Any suggestions re: what I can do with Audio, Movies, Photos, and Apps?  And what about the Other?  Other is taking up 96.39 GB. What is Other, and what can I do about it?
And what about partitioning my hard drive... Is that something I should do?  Should I partition, or configure, my MacBook's internal hard drive differently?  And should I partition, or configure, my external hard drive?  And if I need to partition, or configure, my MacBook's internal hard drive differently, how do I setup Time Machine to backup per any such changes?  Same thing for my external hard drive?
13in. Aluminum, Late 2008 MacBook, 250 GB (with upgraded Samsung SSD 840 Pro Series 256GB hard drive)
Processor 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory 2 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
    OS X 10.9.5
    plus
Apple Time Capsule 4th Generation 2TB
LaCie Porsche Design P'9223 1TB external hard drive
    Thank you for your help.

Partitioning makes no sense. You have a drawer full of stuff. Split it into two smaller drawers and you have two smaller drawers full of stuff.
Decide what you can store on external storage - your iPhoto/Aperture/Lightroom libraries can all be stored on externals, as can your iTunes Libraries and so on. Do you need to carry 30 gigs of movies with you all the time? You  can get portable drives the size of an iPhone these days.

  • Windows 8.1 fails to boot with error code 0x5c after moving physical drives

    Hi,
i just rearranged hard drives on my desktop PC. I removed 4 RAID drives, installed a single drive and reattached all drives into different SATA connectors on the motherboard.
After this, my PC doesn't boot. IT always fails with errorcode 0x5c. My OS is on SSD drive, which was not part of the RAID drive so it should boot up just fine - except it doesn't.
I've tried safe mode, I've tried starting with driver signature enforcement disabled - but it never does boot up properly.
What else do i do apart from reinstalling the OS?

    Hi,
This error 0x5c indicates that the HAL initialization failed. A hardware abstraction layer (HAL) is an abstraction layer, implemented in software, between the physical hardware of a computer and the software that runs on that computer.
It seems that the issue can be cause by interface compatible. Please enter BIOS and change SATA to AHCI to see what’s going on.
Also, I suggest you arrange your 4 RAID drives back to original SATA connector and connect the new single drive to another to check the results.
    Hope this could be helpful.

  • "Original file not found" error after copying from removable hard drive

ok, I have all my itunes library on a removable hard drive, and I want to copy it all to my new computer. so, I plugged the hard drive in, copied all the files into itunes, and when I played one of them, it worked. then, I tried to play it again, but an error message came up saying "The song 'Re-hash'could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like tyo locate it?" and I clicked 'Yes'. then a browser came up, where i could select either the files itunes music, itunes library, or itunes music library. none of them work. help please?

This worked although it was very clumsy (we had almost 3,000 files that had to be deleted and redownloaded. I could not figure out a way to sort all of the 'exclamation points' together so it took an hour or so to scan through the entire library list and delete each file individually and/or in small groups.) The download was very straight forward. In my experience (with iTunes match turned on,) we did NOT loose our playcounts.
Going through all those files I noticed several common themes that may have triggered the problem: 1) multiple artists, 2) special characters in the song title, artist and/or album name - particularly umlauts (we have quite a few german songs in our library.) 3) very long title, artist and/or album names.
I hope that someone from Apple is aware of these issues and working on them....
