Error code -36 when copying large file

Aperture (Apple's pro photo software) stores all of it's data (pictures, metadata, etc) in what appears to be a large file called the Library. In fact, it's a large folder with all of the contents hidden so you don't mess around with it. I back this file up periodically to both an internal and external drive. After a hard drive failure and recreating my whole machine, everything seemed fine and Aperture is working normally. I have tried to drag copy my Aperture Library (rebuilt from my Aperture vault, a back up file created by Aperture) file to my internal second drive, a process that takes about 2 hours (300 Gb). The drive I'm copying to has over 451 GB available and was freshly formatted during this rebuild process. A little more that half way through the drag copy I get the following message.
"The Finder cannot complete the operation because some data in “Aperture Library” could not be read or written, (Error code -36)"
Here's what I've done to so far.
1. Aperture has a function to repair permissions and rebuild the file, done both several times.
2. I found (by looking at all 20,000 plus pictures) some corrupt picture files and deleted them, then repeted step one.
3. Tried a duplicate file on the same drive, same error.
Thoughts? Help? I can't find anything on a Mac OS error -36.
By the way, I'm running Mac OS 10.5.8 and Aperture 2.1.4 on a Quad Core G5.

This what it means:
Type -36 error (I/O Errors (bummers)
This file is having difficulty while either reading from the drive or writing to the drive. The file
may have been improperly written data to the drive or the hard drive or disk may be damaged.
This is almost always indicative of a media error (hard error on the disk). Sometimes (rarely) it is transient.
Solutions: Try copying the file to another drive. Use a disk recovery software, such as Disk First Aid to examine the disk. You can try rebooting with all extensions off. Once in a while this will allow you to read the data. The file in question should be restored from a backup that was stored on a different disk. Regular backups can reduce the time to recover from this error.

  • Error code 8084 when copying large files from VNX servers

    Hi,
We are experiencing problems when attempting to copy large files from our central VNX servers (EMC) using the connection format of smb://<host>/.  With Mavericks this will be SMB2, presumably.  Anything over a few MB in size fails with the error:
The operation can’t be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -8084)
Looking in the Console logs we see the following:
kernel[0]: smb2_smb_read_write_fill: len got reduced, must be running low on credits
If we attempt this on OS X Mountain Lion or below we have no problems.
If, with Mavericks, we connect using the format cifs://<host>/ then file transfers work.
Has anyone come across this before?  Thinking I should also post a bug...
    Cheers,

  • Error code -8062 while copying large file in OS X 10.8.4

I have to copy a very large Time Machine backup file to another disk before resetting RAID 1 on my LaCie 4 GB 2Big drive. File is about 350 GB. After getting through about 2/3rd of it, I am getting an error saying " .. you don't have permissions to copy some items..." and when I click OK, then I get an error code - 8062.
I am using MBA Mid July 2011, OS X 10.8.4, Time Machine backup on LaCie 4 GB 2Big RAID 1 drive to FreeAgen 1 TB.
I would appreciate any thoughts on this. It has happened twice now and since the process takes a very long time, I have wasted three days on it now.
    Thanks you.

Although the documentation says you can copy Time Machine backups in the Finder, it's very slow and sometimes doesn't work at all.
Launch Disk Utility, open the built-in help, and search for the term "Duplicate." Follow the instructions. All existing data on the destination volume will be erased. That shouldn't be a problem, because you don't want to mix backup and non-backup data on the same drive anyway. Turn Time Machine OFF in its preference pane while copying the volume.

  • Error message -36 when copying large  files from Firewire drive

I have kept several large audio files as backup on an external LaCie Firewire drive. When trying to copying them back, almost all of them starts to copy, then stops and (after a minute or so) report error message -36.
I have run both Apple's Disktools and the latest Diskwarrior, but no errors are reported. I gues the audio files must have become corrupted... What do you suggest that I do? The contain valuable audio information that I really don't want to get lost.

    sorry about that
I'm moving movie files around 800mb++ to HFS+ and NTFS formatted drives. no problems when using the NTFS drives with other computers but i cant really test the HFS drive on another computer since im the only one with a mac.

  • Error code 0 when copying a large file to a Mac OS Extended formatted drive

I always back up my photos manually by dragging a folder containing many folders containing many photos into an external drive that I immediately formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) the day I bought it 2 years ago. I now run into a Error Code 0 when I do this. The "mother" folder is 240 GB in size. As I stated, this drive has been formatted for the Mac, so I don't understand why it's (apparently) running into a problem peculiar to FAT32-formatted drives. My iMac has 16 GB of RAM, of which 10 GB was free, the last time I tried to do this.

    Well, you did mention...
so I don't understand why it's (apparently) running into a problem peculiar to FAT32-formatted drives
I kind of had to assume at that point the source drive was the one you formatted as Mac OS Extended two years ago, and the target drive was FAT32. If not, then I'm not sure why you mentioned FAT32 at all.
In that same thinking, error code 0 is directly related to FAT formatted drives.

  • TC and WD500 External drive - Locks up when copying large files

I have a TC with a Western Digital 500GB my Book connected to the USB port on the TC that I use for network Storage. Everything works fine until I try to copy large files or directories from the Finder mounted share. After the copy freezes the external drive can no longer be seen by airport utility. If I look at disks it sees the disk but no partition. I have to power cycle the external drive to have TC see the drive again. Then I disconnect the drive and plug it in directly to the MAC and run disk utility and his repairs the journal. I have to do the repair every time it locks up. Should the external drive be formatted different or does it have to be connected to a USB hub. Or is this just a bug with the TC and afp ?

I have this very same problem.
I tried to copy a 4GB+ folder from the Macbook to the 500GB MyBook attached to my TC and it froze.
Now the the files on the MyBook are invisible when attached to the TC ("0 Items") but are available when the drive is connected directly to the Macbook. I have run disk utility but it hasn't helped. The disk is FAT 32 formatted and the files on the MyBook are still invisible over the network.
When the drive attached to the Macbook directly I can see a 'phantom' file with the same title as the 4GB+ folder I'd tried to copy. This file is "ZERO KB" and it cannot be deleted (error code -43).
Anyone have a clue what is happening here?

  • Error code 50 when copying from TC to external HDD

Hi all, I bought a 3tb TC and backed up about 1.3tb worth of data onto it from an external HDD, I then formatted the external HDD to FAT 32 as I found out that TC does not like to work with FAT 32, no matter, the hard drive ois fixed now. However, when I go to copy all the data back onto the external HDD. i get "an unnexcpected error occured error code -50" or something like that, but the error code is definetly 50. I got this error when trying to copy the movies through, they are MKV files, I checked all the names and I dont think there are any problems with them.
the setup so far is as follows. Externall HDD --USB--> Time capsule.    All operations are being executed through an imac.
HELP ASAP will be greatly appreciated.
    Cheers

Error codes are really hard to figure out.. but i think it will be due to permissions.
    See http://pondini.org/TM/C10.html
It is an error from TM but I think it comes from underlying OS..
Can you copy files to this disk from a source other than the TC.. try copying a file from the TC to the Mac and then from Mac to the external disk.. but make sure it is plugged directly into the mac.. if you have issues look carefully at permission. And format/partition type.. do use GUID partition not MBR Or the older Apple systems.

  • Copying hangs when copying large files from DVD

I'm having trouble copying large files (>2GB) from DVDs to my built-in hard drive. When I drag the file icon from the DVD window to the desktop, the progress bar pops up almost immediately, and says "0 KB of 2.3 GB copied" and "Estimated time left: 1 minute" -- and then it just sits there, doing nothing. In some cases, after five minutes or so of inactivity, the copy finally begins... but most of the time it never does. Force-Quit doesn't help; the only way out is to do an emergency restart and try again.
This problem began when I upgraded to Tiger, and several members of my office group have been experiencing the same problem on their own computers as well.
I've poked around the forum looking for answers but the only thing I could find that looked related was a conflict between iSight and some third-party external hard drives... but none of us have iSight, and none of us are using third-party external drives, so clearly that's not the issue we'rehaving.
    Any help out there?
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Michael, I occasionally notice anomolous behaviour when files get dragged between volumes. Mostly the copying window shows an accurate and immediate indication of what's going on, but other times it just looks like nothing's happening, the display never changes, yet, it is in fact copying the files over. Now, if you're copying 2gb files from DVD to HD, it's gonna take some time, more than 5 minutes, so I'm wondering how long you've left it before forcing it to quit?

  • Unresponsive system when copying large files drive-to-drive (x86_64)

I'm running Arch x86_64 on a quad core Xeon processor/P35 motherboard w/ 4 gigs of RAM.  I also have two SATAII, 7200 RPM HDDs.  For the most part, Arch is a VERY responsive platform.  I am noticing some really odd unresponsiveness that only happens when I copy large files from one hdd to another hdd.
    Symptoms:
-Mouse cursor skips (doesn't move smoothly)
-Windows such as firefox or shell don't move smoothly across the screen if I move them
-Keyboard lag - as I type this post ) my fingers are going faster than the text is appearing
Once the copy is finished, everything is normal again.  I swear I read someone else reporting this behavior, I just can't find it. Two questions:
    1) Is normal for the x86_64 kernel?
    2) If not, what can I tweak to remedy it?
EDIT: Ack!  Found the post I remembered reading:

if the file is bigger than 4gig(uncompressed) then u need swap partition, as the first thing it does is copy the file to memory and if it overflows it is bad. then your server is 1/3 options, either server/middle/desktop. if it is server, it doesn't care what framerate u get on X. then there is the timer. I'm running mine at 300 but arch's default should be 1000. the higher it is the more it "checks" what needs to be done with files, events, etc. then there is the file system type and block size factor. if ur block size is really low like me(1024k) then ur hd has to write more times(on and off) just to write out the huge file. so for huge files, format with huge block size(4096k?) so that the hd does less work.

  • I get an error code 0 when dragging a file to a sans disk

I get an error code 0 when dragging file from my desktop to a a sansdisk.

    A SanDisk what?
    How is it Formatted?
What type of file are you trying to drag to it?
Sorry for not being a better mind reader, but if it has been formatted NTFS by or for windows only? Then you will need to reformat it to MS-DOS FAT-32 so that Mac's and windows both can read and write to it or get special software for the iMac.

  • Error code -36 when copying files to certain drives

I want to back up my Aperture Library. I have two external fire wire drives that give me this error:
The Finder cannot complete the operation because some of the data in Aperture Library could not be read or written. (Error code -36)
I don't get the error when copying to my Drobo, so I believe this problem is only related to my two fire wire drives. I reformatted one of them using Disk Utility, same problem.

Today I had the same thing happen. I was copying some large (2gb+) video files from a USB2 FAT32 external drive to my other Mac formatted external drives, first time to a firewire 400 and then tried to a USB2. At about 750mb, the transfer stopped and the EXACT same dialog box appeared.
I ran Disk Utility on the source drive USB2 FAT32 to fix drive errors. No improvement.
As I've had issues under SL with my optical FW DVD drives (see that thread for details), I thought may be my FW drives don't like FAT32. So I tried the Mac USB2 drive. Not working either.
Finally, I realized I was routing the FAT32 drive into a cheap unpowered 4 port USB hub (Genesys Logic, Inc. chipset). So I unplugged the hub from the Mac Mini and inserted the FAT32 drive directly into the Mac Mini. Tada! Success was at hand. No problems transferring to either FW or USB drives.
So this tells me there is something flaky about some devices and how they are hooked up. That is the drives and files are OK. It is Snow Leopard that has the bug.
Mike, if you are still having problems and are comfortable using Unix CL, you may be able to use the DD command (so called "Data Dump") to transfer. This is a very robust method to transfer files and permits resumption if a transfer has died midstream. It can even transfer real corrupt files off of damaged disk drives regardless of drive format. I used DD successfully to move files off an eMac that had random hardware crashes (due to faulty counterfeit capacitors) that were interrupting the transfer.

  • Error code 36 when copying files to external hard drive!

I keep getting this error when I try to copy files to my external hard drives. It is the same error no matter what drive I use. It says it cannot perform the operation because the data cannot be written - like there is a permissions problem, but I checked all the files, and there is no permission problems. The file sizes are small .iff and .jpg --- There is not more than 10 characters in the naming, so what is going on? I have folders inside of folders, and it will not copy - but if I go into the folders and copy each file one at a time, by itself, it works. I don't get it? Anybody have any thoughts?

a very common issue caused by a bug in snow leopard finder when dealing with FAT formatted drives. see this link for details and a fix

  • Error Code -36 When Copying iTunes Music folder to an External Drive

_*"The finder cannot complete the operation because some data in "NAME.mp3" could not be read or written. (Error code -36)_"*
This is the error message I get when trying to copy my iTunes music folder to an external drive. I am following Apple's knowledge base article, so yes, I have consolidated my library, have closed iTunes and there is plenty of room on the external drive. For what it's worth, I am also getting this error when trying to do the same thing with my iPhoto library.
Would be grateful for some insight,
With oodles of appreciation in advance,
    Joe

I was getting the same "-36" error while trying to backup to a Lacie firewire external drive.
I had a lot of people telling me to re-format, erase, reinstall, run utility programs ... yada, yada, yada.
First off, test to see if it is the connection type (firewire). I reconnected the offending external drive via USB, restarted the drive and ... BINGO! ... all transfers went perfectly.
Once i knew it was the firewire connection and not the drive itself i simply unplugged my iSight camera (the only other firewire device connected to my machine), reconnected my external drive via firewire and the problem is now corrected.
Firewire buses seem to be very finicky things ... i would suggest eliminating all firewire devices from the machine (except, of course, the external drive you're trying to transfer to) and see if the problem goes away.
Like i said, i simply unplugged my iSight camera and the transfer to my external drive went perfect and my transfer rates went from an average of 4MB/sec to over 19MB/sec.
P.S. BTW - prior to the error and after i corrected the error by unplugging the iSight camera, my internal and external drives all checked out 100% on Disk Utility, Disk Warrior and TechTool Pro.
