Error code 4Mot/1/40000002:HDD-0

With the following error will I have to replace both the hard drive and HD fan?

Probably either the fan motor, a temp sensor that controls it, or the logic board part that handles info from the sensor to the fan. Mot means motor and HDD is the hard drive, so it's something to do with the fan that cools the HDD. No matter what, be sure you have a backup b/c you're likely on borrowed time. Only an Apple Store or service provider can tell you what needs to be fixed.

  • The error code 4MOT/4/4000003:HDD-1393 has shown up from the apple hardware test. What should I do about this?

My iMac has been running a little hot, it was suggested to run the Apple hardware test (AHT), as heat can cause problems witht he hard drive.
The AHT revealed the error code 4MOT/4/4000003:HDD-1393 which I assume means a hard dtrive problem. But, what do I do. Is this a critical error or a minor fault. Everything is running as normal, but the machine is getting a little hotter than usual.

This indicates problem with HD fan.
Exact nature of the problem is only known to Apple.
We have no way to interpret this error code.
Keep a backup of your data.
When you get a chance, take the Mac to the nearest Apple store to have it tested.
    Best.

Buy a new drive and replace the old one. While the old one is still working (if it is) I would quickly make a bootable backup to an external drive if you have one, assuming you have no extant backup.
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
Select the destination volume from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.
You will find suitable replacement drives at OWC.

Alternatively, contact Apple Service, iMac Service or Apple's Express Lane. Do note that if you have AppleCare's protection plan and you're within 50 miles (80 KM) of an Apple repair station, you're eligible for onsite repair since yours is a desktop machine.

  • I run a hardware test and it gave me the error code 4mot/4/40000003:HDD-1500: does anyone know what it means?

    Hello,
I have a problem of my iMac freezing up regularly for no obvious reason.
So I ran a hardware test and it returns me only with the code  4MOT/4/40000003:HDD-1500.
I need some help to know what that means and how to repair my iMac.
    William

William, unfortunately it means your hard disk drive has or is failing and needs to be replaced. Hopefully you have a current backup or clone. You can have the drive replaced at an Apple Store or AASP or do it yourself if you're inclined by following the guide fir your specific iMac at http://www.ifixit.com/Device/Mac_Desktop

  • Error code - 4MOT/4/40000003.HDD

Can anybody please give me some advice on what the above mentioned error code is as my iMac is failing to do anything except start up,
    Thanks Mark.

    Hi,
Try these below in order, to check whether you can boot the machine further:
Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    About NVRAM and PRAM
OS X: About OS X Recovery  to confirm that the internal disk is accessible.
    Afterwards, try a normal reboot.
If the machine is still not booting:
    Refer: Hardware Test 4MOT/4/40000003: HDD-1326
    and Using Apple Hardware Test
    Cheers

  • Is this major?! Hardware test error code 4M0T/4/40000002:HDD-0

I ran a thorough hardware test on my 2010 iMac11,3 yesterday and came up with this error code. I then used disk utility to try to repair the disk and ran another thorough hardware test and the same code appeared. Does anyone know what this error code means? and whether I should get it fixed ASAP?
I'm asking since this is my work computer and I really need to have it around and can't risk having repairs take a week or so to get this error fixed. If this is major I'll probably move all my work files onto my MBP n try to work on them there but that would be my last resort.
Any help would be much appreciated!! Thanks!

iStatPro says my hard drive fan is not spinning at all...that can't be good..I guess i'll have to bring this baby in for some servicing.
Watch the temp of the HD; I don't know what the max should be, but be careful not to damage it by letting it get too hot.

  • After installing a new hard drive the fan is very noisy. Hardware test error code 4MOT/1/40000003: HDD-1417

I've carried out all the trouble shooting procedures. The fan is running @ 3899rpm and the temp is 26 deg celsius. (I'm assuming the sensor is working OK...it may not be) A SMART test was OK, can anyone please identify the code and suggest a solution.
    Thanks
    roger190

There are temperature sensor on the Apple installed hard drives. Did you reattach this to the new drive? If so how well / badly was it stuck on? Was the sensor damaged during the install of the new drive?
The fact the fans are running @3899rpm shows something is not quite right.
Is it possible the new drive is faulty? See here:

After hardware test, my iMac is showing error message 4MOT/4/40000003:HDD-1278 Should I be concerned? Best, Paolo

Yes Paolo, you should be concerned. That error code indicates the fan that cools the hard drive has failed or is failing. You'll likely need professional help to overcome this.

Thanks - Even though I'm years out of warranty I got chat help from Apple (I said they should help me since the codes aren't published.)  We covered three different questions, and although I didn't get a specific decoding of the error code, I got confirmation of what other comments here imply - it might have helped that I indicated I'd already been here - and useful links to how to do back ups, including to CD(s). (I don't have a lot of data on this computer yet)
Now I need to figure out how to decide how hot-to-the-touch is "too hot" for the metal frame at the top of the iMac to decide whether I'm getting adequate fan performance or insufficient.  While chatting I initially reported it was cool at the bottom and warm at the top.  Apple hadn't asked, but their response prompted me to feel it again, and I'd say the top was hot, not warm - I updated but Apple didn't comment further except to conclude after addressing the other questions that I should take it in for further assessment - don't really want to bother with that.

  • Error code"4MOT/2/40000004:ODD-4562" what does this mean?

I AM ALWAYS VERY PLEASED WITH APPLE COMPUTERS AND MY IMAC EARLY 2009 AND IT IS GOING VERY WELL WHEN I RUN EXTENDED HARDWARE TEST I GET THE FOLLOWING ERROR CODE    "4MOT/2/40000004:ODD-4562"  AND I AM WONDERING WHAT THE ERROR CODE MEANS AND WHEN I RUN ISTAT PRO IT SHOWS ALL THREE FANS GOING NORMAL SPEED AND NORMAL TEMPERATURES IN COMPUTER ?

That's a SuperDrive fan motor problem. This means that the fan isn't working correctly.
Take the iMac to an Apple Store or reseller to get the SuperDrive replaced. I recommend you to do this even if you see that the ODD fan is working at a normal speed, because it can fail at any moment. To make sure it's not a mistake, run Apple Hardware Test again

  • Error code:"4MOT/2/40000004: ODD" means what?

I do the hardware test on my two iMac 24".
Both show error code "4MOT/2/40000004: ODD".
Does anybody know what it means?

Re: your more recent post that got disappeared, Apple's service and parts channel operates on a very different basis to its supply channel. Supply builds to order and ships direct at the beginning of a product lifecycle to meet demand, and then as the production capacity has increased beyond demand, pre-builds inventory and ships through distribution and starts deviating parts supply to the service channel.
The service channel receives shipments of parts in batches, when the supply channel can spare them from production. Service then ships out parts as needed for repairs. Defects are usually proportionate to the age of the machine, so there is less need for spares at the beginning of a product life cycle, so service takes a low priority over production. The best thing to do with a mac that is dead on arrival is to return it and get a new one, since it will take ages to repair it. Apple then repairs, refurbishes and resells your old system, when service has capacity to do so.
