Error code -50 or system hand when copying

Hi all
I'm hoping someone can give me some extra info about an error code -50 / system hang that I keep experiencing. I've already done some research so I think I know where the problems might lie but not exactly how to solve them.
OK, my iBook hard drive is getting full, possibly too full, it's a 60Gb drive with 8.5Gb free space when I boot, which drops to around 7.8 Gb when I've been working for a while. I backup to an HFS+ formatted Lacie d2 drive connected by firewire.
To free up disk space on the iBook I decided to get a Netgear readyNAS duo, use this as a backup device. Then use the firewire drive to store and work on data which would previously have been on the internal drive.
So no I have the firewire drive set up, with all the data and I'm trying to backup to the readyNAS before deleting anything on my iBook drive. So far I have tried the following to copy data from the iBook, or from the firewire drive to the readyNAS:
1) Copy and paste using Finder
2) NTI Shadow backup software (supplied with the Netgear readyNAS)
3) Chronosync (trial copy)
4) Synk 6.4 pro
Using these methods (and the trial software within it's imitations) I get the following results:
1) Finder will produce "Error Code -50" message sometimes and stop. Other times the whole Finder will just hang after approx 650Mb of data has been copied. The whole Finder stops responding and the only solution has been to force shut down using the power button.
2) NTI Shadow will produce a series of errors saying the file or folder could not be created (I'm guessing this is it's response to a system Error Code -50) and sometimes will hand.
3) Chronosync will copy most items but not all - "error creating file/folder" is the result. Sometimes it hangs.
4) Synk 6.4 has the same result as Chronosync.
After looking though posts here and on the readynas.com forums, it seems the problem may be one of three things, in order of likelihood:
1) Characters used in some of the file/folder names are OK in HFS+ formatted disks but not compatible with whatever format the readyNAS uses for it's disks (I'm guessing a linux/unix format). The readyNAS does support AFS, which it says is the best file system to use for Mac systems.
Therefore, what characters should be removed from file/folder names before trying to copy? Is there a definitive list somewhere?
2) The current iBook disk space is not large enough to allow me to copy over all the files in one go. I don't think this is the case as I've not been trying to back up the whole lot.
3) There is a permissions issue. Again, I have set all permissions on the readyNAS volume to 777 so I don't think the problem is this.
4) Max file size on the readyNAS. One file tried to copy is a 700Mb zip file, this is the file which has caused Finder to hang more than any other, after about 650Mb has been transferred
Any comments / advise will be really helpful, even if it's just to help me discount a theory.

I can connect to the shared drive fine and can copy/delete/move most individual files to and from the NAS. The error-50 comes during copy of multiple files.
How big is the Firewire drive?

I'm thinking you should make a complete bootable clone to it myself.

This is exactly how I've been backing up in the past except using Superduper (not Carbon Copy Cloner) to create bootable backups. The issue now is that I need to free up space on the iBook hard drive.
If the NAS can be formatted for AFS/HFS+/MacOSextended, then that is best.
I don't know what format the disks use. I think the readyNAS uses a form of linux as it's OS. It does support AFS however.
Shame you already got the NAS, they're popular, but quirky.
Yes, beginning to regret it but still can't say for certain if I'm doing something wrong or if the unit simply does not work as advertised. I bought this unit because of it's advertised AFS support and OSX compatibility, also for it's RAID capability and easy expansion
filename/path length can be a problem as well as the illegal characters are / ? \ : * | ", as well as any character you can type using the Ctrl key.
That makes a long list of characters to check, especially over approx 175000 files... I was planning to use Spotlight to do the checks but maybe you know of a quicker way?
Just one more thought, I have an old Win XP box with more than enough space to try a backup to there. If the backup works without problems, it means a) I can try connecting to the NAS using SMB and b) it provides a good control case for working out what the problem is.

    I am looking at an issue with users not getting specific group policies. 
    After searching a number of client computers I found that the following error

    I can find the folder in the Sysvol folder on all of the domain controllers. 
    The issue with end users seems to be that the proxy settings for internet explorer is not being applied. 
    Potential problems?

    Hi all 
    In administering this policy I am a little confused. 
    We have a policy that distributes proxy settings in the internet explorer maintenance settings section - however when opening this policy up in GPO editor the internet explorer maintenance section is not present.
    I plan to apply the settings via User/preferences/control panel settings/ internet settings (or registry settings from article) however I am unable to edit the settings for internet explorer maintenance and these will persist. Ideas????

  • Windows Server Essentials 2012 error code: 2147942403 The system cannot find the path specified

    Running Windows Server 2012 Essentials with an external usb 3 drive as a backup device.  Using a Vantec hx enclosure with a WD Red drive. Last night the Dashboard saw the drive with about half the 4TB available for backup. A.M., I get "error code:
    2147942403 The system cannot find the path specified".
    Going to the server desktop, I see a message indicating that the usb device malfunctioned.  unplugging it, and plugging it back in, I now have it available via the dashboard.
    This has happened a couple times with two different drives in Vantec hx enclosures.
    A couple possibilities come to mind:
    the enclosures may both be bad...
    there is some problem with the system software and external usb drive.
    Thoughts?
    Suggestions for external enclosures?

    According to your description, my understanding is that you cannot backup the Windows Server Essentials 2012 and got "error code: 2147942403 The system cannot find the path specified". You found the usb device malfunctioned. 
    Can you backup the server when you unplugged the usb device, and plugged it back in? If you can backup the server when you replug the usb device, you need to engage the vendor to resolve the hard drive issues.

    Help!
    When trying to deploy a test system i got the following error:
    Error Code:-17500
    Unknown System Error in TestStand - Read Seq Files in Workspace.vi->TestStand - Find Dependent Files.vi->TestStand - Add File and Dependent Files.vi->TestStand - Add All TestStand User Files to File Info Array.vi->TestStand - Update File Info.vi->TestStand - Distribution Wizard GUI.vi->TestStand - Deployment Utility Splash Screen.vi
    I then tried to re-deploy previously successfully deployed systems - same error. (I have done nothing to my teststand setup/installation/engine or deployment files since the last successful deployment)
    I removed teststand & then re-installed it - i still got the same error. These files it is searching for do not exist on my pc.
    Any ideas what has gone wrong/how to fix it?

    I've just had exactly the same problem and after posting a message, have been forwarded to this thread. Luckily it looks as though we've found a solution, or a cause of the problem. One of my work colleagues (SercoSteve on discussion forums) suggested removing the Teststand 3.1\cfg directory, and replacing it with a default one from another machine, and this seems to have done the trick and made the deployment wizard be able to analyse the files and build. We are editing files in cfg so I've now got the task of replacing each file in this directory one by one to find which is causing the problem.
    I'll add another post when I find out which one it is.

    Following error i am getting after i chnaged the Path in Config File from
    \\vs01\d$\\Deployment\Files\temp.txt
    to
    C:\Deployment\Files\temp.txt
    [Bulk Insert Task] Error: An error occurred with the following error message: "Cannot bulk load because the file "C:\Deployment\Files\temp.txt" could not be opened. Operating system error code 3(The system cannot find the path specified.).". 

    I think i know whats going on. The Bulk Insert task runs by executing sql command (bulk insert) internally from the target sql server to load the file. This means that the SQL Server Agent of the target sql server should have permissions on the file you trying to load. This also means that you need to use UNC path instead to specify the file path (if the target server in on different machine)

    So, I tried all the suggestions and followed the links - all to no avail.
    as you can see, (screenshot below) my iMac is a 21.5 inch late 2009 model which isn't showing in the updates listed above
    My system report shows that my Mac has the following:
    I reset the PRAM and the SMC - still have the same error message when I try to burn discs. I've used both CD's and DVD's and tried with my external Discwriter too.
    Any further suggestions??

  • K7N2 Delta2 Platinium - System freezes when copying or writing to HDD

    I am experiencing a strange problem. I don't know what I have changet to my system but since 3 days ago I am geting this system lock up when I move or copy files from one HDD to another. Windows doesn't show any error message. When copying files, either in the midle of the proces or at the end the system LOCKS UP  and there is nothing i can do except a hot restart. I never had this problems and it was months that my computer was very stable. I have no ide how to test to get some info about this issue. Any opinions ?

    The tems are cool. CPU varies from 44°(idle) to 58° celcius (full load). Motherboard also 35° celcius. Now i dont know whats the start but let me tell the whole story. First of all i have this system since long time ago. Normally i install the computer once, than I optimize the system as i want it to be and than i back it up. Now Since i have all my programs installed in the way i want i dont like to reinstall the computer often, because it will take me two week to complete all the tweaks and changes that i do normally. So this system that is now runing has passed to three different motherboards (computer changes). Maybe the process of installing and reinstalling drivers in the system has degraded it. I am very carefull to clean drivers, registry and all. Although the system shows now errors, about 7 months ago i used to suffer system freezes when burning DVD. I couldn't resolve the issue since the problem was Nero being victim of SERVICE PACK 2. Anyway i have read that Windows XP SP has some Buffer and Cache problems and it makes conection with the burning problems. Since then i don't know how, after some times the burning problem disappeared ... i could burn DVD with the same version of NERO and everything was fine untill 3 days ago  . So i got the new NERO 7 with its new EXTRA BUFFER feature whitch works fine. Soon after installing NERO 7 one of my HDD crashed (i dont thing it has any conection with nero), it lost the partition table and it was recognised as UNALLOCATED. I recovered all the datas using a software calle R-Studio (very good by the way it can recover FDISK, Format, Delete, everything). After i had reformated the drive that crashed, I copyed back all the rescued files. Its there that the Copy Hang Ups started. WINDOWS doesn't show any ERROR at all, that means that there is no controller or HDD problem. I checked the drive and its fine. What reasured me that the drive was not the cause, was that even when i started copying between the other drives of my system i got the same problem.  So maybe my system is in a very very bad shape, or i dont have a clue of this thing        What is strange its that WINDOWS DOESN'T SHOW ANY ERROR MESSAGE, and PRIME STRESS TEST GOES ON FOR HOURS WITHOUT THE SMALLEST PROBLEM.

  • What is iMovie error code -49? I get when I try to share my edited video in 720p with i tunes.

    I edited a homevideo on my new mac Book pro 15-inch. When I tried to share in 720p with iTunes I get a message that says it can't prepare it and gives error code -49. Does anyone know what that means? I have abour 90 GB disc space, so that can't be the problem.

    A lot of times iMovie does that when you are trying to prepare a large file. Try to do the same thing in to iTunes as a Mobile or a Medium file and see if it exports fine?
