Error copying file when reinstalling Windows

I saw where someone had posted a similar question, but saw no answers. Anyway, IBM sent me a set of recovery disks and a new hard drive (unit it still under warranty) and when I try to reinstall using the recovery disks provided, it stops during disk 2 of 6. The progress bar stops just short of the end of it, and the total progress bar stops about 1/3 of the way through. I used an identical set to reinstall the operating system (IBM sent me two hard drives and two sets of recovery disks, one for each unit) on an identical machine and had the same problem. I received this error message each time in a "recov32" window that popped up:
An error copying file D:\RECOVERY\CM2ZCUS.002
ERROR 23: DATA ERROR (CYCLIC REDUNDANCY CHECK).
What does this mean and how can I resolve it? When I hit "OK", it goes on to ask for disk 3 of 6, and so on.
And while attempting the installation on both systems, it asked for a supplemental product recovery disk (the disk says product recovery supplemental disk) just prior to insertion of disk 1 of 6.....I put that disk in the drive and scant seconds later., then iit asks for it again after disk 6 of 6 has been installed.  Is that normal? Then when it tells me to power up again, I can't do it using the restart button on that page.....the window is not responsive and i have to it shut it down buy manually pressing the on button. Appears to repeat the installation all over again.
At any rate, both installations have not been successful in restoring Windows XP Professional on these machines, and I'm in dire need of a solution!!

Sorry about the caps....didn't realize it'd be difficult to read.
Anyway, regarding the possibility of scratched/damaged setup disks......I have two sets, one for each laptop, and both give me the error when I try to reinstall. Seems pretty coincidental that both sets would be damaged, unless IBM makes it a habit to send out faulty software. But I tried again, got the same error when Disk 2 was installing....I went ahead and clicked OK, it asked for the third disk and darned if it popped up with the same error, but with a different file (BKD047A.IMZ). However, I'm continuing the installation in spite of the errors, but don't hold out much hope that it will be successful. If it isn't, I'll try a set of XP Pro boot disks. If that fails, I'll try an installation CD for another laptop. After that, I don't know, unless I call IBM again and have them send me replacements for the two sets of disks. Unless anyone else has another idea??

  • I'm getting error "copying files failed. the required file is in use". How do I find the file?

I've found this question is elswhere but no answers.  I'm trying to consolidate my library to an external hard drive since I'm pretty sure my current drive is about to fail.  The entire process has taken me days due to one error or another.  This is my most recent error and so far there is no way around it since it does not show me what file is in use.
    Help?

I used "Carbon Copy Cloner" to copy my library from one external disk to another.
The "library" consists of a bunch of files and folders (see links at end).  You don't need CCC to copy it, just drag the whole iTunes folder in your Home > Music from one drive to the other.
I pointed my iTunes library to the new location under iTunes preferences.
No, don't do it with preferences.  Once you have moved the folder as above, start iTunes with the option key held down and guide it to the library.itl file on the new drive.  This is assuming you have been using iTunes's default settings and haven't been managing your media yourself.
I used iTunes to "Consolidate Library" to verify that all files had been moved.
Okay, in doing that you have  moved just your media to the new drive but left all your other library files on the old drive.
iTunes succesfully copied/re-attached a lot of files before giving me the error that the disk could not be read or written to.
    Try it with my method.
I began to troubleshoot the hard drive by checking the cables and scanning for errors.
    This disk checked out fine.
I identified the failure and subsequent error was due to corrupted files.
I watched the consolidation process and was able to see which file it was trying to copy before it errored out.
I deleted the corrupted file and restarted the process (I repeated this numerous times).
When the process seemed to be just about over, I got the error "Copying files failed. The required file is in use."
I'm sure this is likely another corrupted file, however, it happens so fast that I have no way to identify what file is causing the problem.  I tried making sure no other processes were running and no other windows or media players were open.  I also tried to look for an error log but was unsuccessful.
    Any ideas?
Disk Utility will scan for a corrupt directory but I don't think it works on the file level if it is a single file that was corrupted.  I know I have seen Carbon Copy Cloner pick up on single file error when I had one sitting on a bad sector of a drive several years ago.  If you can identify the corrupt file this way then you will have to use a backup copy since it is unlikely it can be rescued.
If you have Diskwarrior it has a file check utility.
You have, of course, restarted your computer before doing all this, and keep other computer activity to a minimum (don't play music while copying the files and don't use other applications that coupld potential be trying to get access to your files)?

  • ITunes library consolidation error: "Copying files failed. An unknown error occurred (-50)."

My iTunes library has outgrown the HDD on my iMac, so I've started to migrate it over to a Synology NAS.  The iTunes Media folder is set to the NAS, but when I attempt to consolidate the library the operation fails each time with the error: "Copying files failed. An unknown error occurred (-50).
I have found this references to this error in the communities from Windows users, but I only use Macs.

Just trying to give this topic a poke as I am having a similar issue.
I am rebuilding my library that was on an external drive.  I had a backup of much of the files, but not a direct backup of the iTunes media folder, as well I am now moving it to a new iTunes Media directory on a Synology 1813+ NAS running DSM 4.3 vs. a USB attached drive.
I have followed all of the correct procedures to move the media directory by using the tools within iTunes, and that all worked perfectly.
So far iTunes has been able to locate most of the music files through its own processes. Once it completed that process I then initiated "Consolidate files" to move the found files to the new iTunes Media directory on the new NAS.
I am led to believe that the issue is with a specific file that causes the copy process to stop, but I don't know how to capture what file it might be.
I am not seeing anything relevent in the console log.
Hoping someone can throw me some ideas...

    BUMP
Yes, I just get that message. I don't see how I could investigate this problem.
I didn't mention that this happened when I was consolidating my library, not copying files to another computer.
In other words, I'm using a "normal" itunes procedure, itunes won't complete it, and won't tell me exactly why or how to figure out how to fix it...
Is there at least some easy way to tell which files were successfully copied to my itunes music folder so I can work on moving the uncopied files?
    Can anybody help me?

Thanks for the reply.  I was able to solve this particular issue by renaming the specific file that was causing the hangup.  Unfortunately it leaves me bewildered as the name WAS "CALCULATE DP.VI" and now IS "CALCULATE_DP.VI".  This was the only difference that allowed the build to go forward, even thought the original name does not violate naming conventions.
This was while building a .llb distribution.  On a related note, even though this build was successfule, the subsequent build of an executable went through without error, however some dynamic VIs, were not functioning and others were, when the executing the application.  The dynamic VI causing the problem was also the caller for the above "CALCULATE DP.VI".  Two of four dynamic VIs would respond to their call, and two would not, one of which was dependedn on "CALCULATE DP.VI" caller.  All dyanmic VIs were placed in the .llb and set as always included, etc.  The solution was to place an explicit call to the .llb to guarantee that it could be found by the application at run time.

I'm getting this: "File Error: Unknown File" when trying to render a Lower third made in the Motion tab. I'm using FCP 6.0.6 and haven't had any issues with this before. It seems to work fine if there is just text, but as soon as I apply any effect, like a drop shadow, I get that error message.

I've tried different machines and shutting down and restarting, but have had no success. They're using FCP 6 and most of the computers are dual processor G5s.
Any thoughts? I've seen other discussions about this error, but none where it happens when trying to capture.

I suppose you chose easy setup DV PAL 48khz

Are you saying that sound was recorded at 32khz (12 bit)?
If so then there might be indeed problems with FCP.

  • Windows 8.1 Network Share 0x8007003b Error Copying Files

    Hi All,
I'm having an issue when copying files from a Windows network share. If the file is above 5MB it will start copying and then after a minute or two I will get an error such as:
    Interrupted Action
An unexpected error is keeping you from copying the file. If you continue to receive this error, you can use the error code to search for help with this problem.
Error 0x8007003B: An unexpected network error occurred.
The network share is in a different office and is accessible over a point-to-point VPN, so the connection is not that fast.
But before everyone tells me to start diagnosing the router and or VPN please take note of the following:
My colleague who is running Windows 7 can copy files from the network share fine
If I run a Windows 7 VM on my Windows 8.1 laptop I can copy the files across fine
I also know it isn't an issue with this particular file share. I set up a little lab, where I had one VM which had a shared folder and 2 other client VMs one running Windows 7 and one running Windows 8.1. I limited the bandwidth to the two client
VMs to a similar speed we see across our VPN. The result was that the Windows 8.1 failed with the same error above, whereas the Windows 7 copied fine.
There is also a noticeable difference visually when copying using Windows 8.1 and Windows 7:
Windows 7 - The progress bar progresses smoothly giving the current speed and estimated time remaining
Windows 8.1 - The progress bar progresses in a jumpy fashion. E.g. it shows no progress, then after a minute it jumps and shows 16% progress, then shows no further progress, then jumps by another 18%. There is no estimated time remaining.
I ran Wireshark to investigate what was going on at the network layer. I see the following behaviour:
Windows 8.1 - The file is copying fine then all of a sudden there are a lot of TCP dupack packets. After which the Windows 8.1 client sends a RST packet and then the error pops up.
Windows 7 - The file is copying fine then you also see a load of TCP dupack packets, however no error is displayed and it continues copying fine.
I'd appreciate any help with this I'm hoping there are some settings I can change to make Windows 8.1 behave more like Windows 7!

    To answer your original questions.
Do you mean the file below 5 MB will copy fine ?
5MB is not a hard limit. If the file is small enough it will copy before it errors out. A file of around 5MB or so fails with an error.
Have you tried to copy the files from another Windows 8.1 machine (This will help us to verify whether the issue is casued by the specific machine)?Have you tried to copy another file from the network share to have a check ?
Yes I've tried from another Windows 8.1 machine and have the same behaviour. It is the same with different files from the network share. And the same with different network shares.
I am seeing nothing in the event viewer when the error occurs. I do not believe this to be a VPN issue because I can recreate this situation perfectly. As I mentioned in the original post- I
also know it isn't an issue with this particular file share. I set up a little lab, where I had one VM which had a shared folder and 2 other client VMs one running Windows 7 and one running Windows 8.1. I limited the bandwidth to the two client VMs to a similar
speed we see across our VPN. The result was that the Windows 8.1 failed with the same error above, whereas the Windows 7 copied fine.
Basically, I had virtual machines all on the same local network. One virtual machine was hosting a file share with files on it. I created one Windows 7 VM and one Windows 8.1 VM. Using VMWare Workstation you can limit the network bandwidth to the VMs. When
I did not limit the network bandwidth I could copy all files of all sizes fine. However, when I limit the network bandwidth to a speed of around 30-50KBps, the Windows 8.1 VM fails to copy files with the same error. But Windows 7 VM copies the files fine.
The point of limiting the bandwidth in this way is to create a similar scenario to that I see when connecting over the VPN.
This all leads me to believe there is some sort of issue with copying files from fileshares over slow connections using Windows 8.1.
    Cheers,
    Zak

  • Moving library to external hard drive and get the error "Copying files failed. The disk could not be read from or written to"

    Hello,
I'm moving my library to an external hard drive.
I've made sure to use the 'Keep iTunes Media Folder Organized' option when pointing to the new library location.
I select 'File'->'Library'->'Organize Library', I select to 'Consolidate Files', click 'OK' and get ther error message "Copying files failed. The disk could not be read from or written to".
I've read elsewhere that there may be a corrupted file that I need to sequester somehow and perhaps add it back however I'm not certain how I can locate that file because the status window doesn't indicate which file it's attempting to transfer when the error appears.
    Any tips?
    Thank you,
    Greg H
    iTunes 10.6.3

    OK I figured it out!
It was a dodgy file....I sorted the file folders by date, and as it turned out within the "compilations" folder there was a CD where only about half the tracks seemed to have been copied over. Could not have identified this simply from the time indicated on the finder folder sort, because there were several CDs copied over in the that same minute.
I went back to the original itunes folder, deleted all the files from that CD in itunes, then also deleted all those files from the original disk and the target disk.
Tried the "consolidate library" again, and it completed nicely. 200megs of music and videos.
Very happy to solve this problem after 3 weeks.

  • Error copying files from flash drive

I'm not entirely sure this is a Windows compatibility problem, but it seems plausible. We have an external USB drive that is used to carry files back and forth between home, where we have a MacBook, and my husband's job, where he has a Windows machine. He has had a problem on several occasions copying files between the external drive and the hard drive. If he copies an entire folder, the copy will sometimes throw an error and then abort the copy process. This then results in anything that previously existed in the target folder and didn't get copied being completely wiped out (instead of them just being left there).
I was able to replicate this behavior for the local copy of the files that are now on our hard drive, just trying to copy to another folder on the hard drive. The error message I saw was a "File in Use" error on a file that was definitely not open in any application, and then the aborted copy process (and the complete erasure of any files that previously were there). It was intermittent: I had a successful copy-and-paste of the folder once, and another that displayed the error behavior.
    Other info:
I can copy using "cp -r" on the command line, this only happens with the Finder.
The file that I saw the "File in Use" error on has an extended attribute set (I noticed this due to the "@" sign at the end of the permissions). When I look at it, it is a com.apple.FinderInfo attribute but I don't know what the values/fields mean.
The files all show the username & group name from the Windows system my husband uses at work (we haven't set any groups at home -- the files show "staff" as the group so I presume this is from the Windows system).
Some of the files were originally created on the Windows machine, others originally on the Mac machine.
The external hard drive is formatted as MS-DOS (FAT32).
I'm thinking there is some permissions issue between the Mac attributes and the Windows attributes that is causing the copy to fail (ungracefully) but that's a theory and I don't know how to fix it. Thanks for the help.

I never did figure out why the files wouldn't copy over. Eventually, I deleted them and reformatted the drive. I don't know if that "fixed" anything, and I have not tried to copy such large files from the Mac to drive or vice-versa, but the drive seems to be fine. So, the problem and the solution remain a mystery!

  • ITunes not displaying 'copying files' when importing songs

When importing a large number of MP3 files, say an albums worth, iTunes refuses to display the 'copying files' progress bar at the top of the window. It is a process of trial and error clicking on the arrow to get the right progress bar to display, when and if I manage to get the appropriate progress bar up it will not stay for longer than a few milliseconds. Is this something I can fix or yet another sloppy bug in iTunes 7?

Paulo has dome great anecdotal advice but this is usually a fiel permissions problem. No idea how it gets changed but you can run Disk Utility and repair permissions. Do it twice. then Get Info on your drive and see what the privileges are. Do the same for your FCP projects folders. Get info on your FCP project file itself.
You need to get this figured out before you invest any more time in editing.

  • Error copying files, Error code -50

I have a G4 (OSX 10.3.9) networked with a eMachines Windows XP Home Edition (SP 2). I had sucessfully operated this network combination for approximately 1 year. Recently I experienced a permissions issue with the XP unit: A program I installed on the XP unit (Rosetta Stone) would not function due to a permissions issue. Unsuccessful at resolving the problem with Rosetta Stone, I re-installed Windows to regain permissions to run the program. This was sort of like pruning a rose with a chain saw; it worked, but it was not pretty.
I can now run Rosetta, but I can no longer (at the Mac) copy files from the Mac to the XP unit. I log into SMB as usual, open the "SHAREDDOCS" folder, and try to drag a file from the Mac desktop to this window. The resulting dialog box says:
    "Copying "document" to "SHAREDDOCS"
Sorry, the operation could not be completed because an unexpected error occurred (Error code -50)."
How can I regain the use of copying files while at the Mac to the XP unit? I believe it to be a permissions issue on the XP, but I cannot find enough information to effectively troubleshoot this issue. What permission does the Mac have to satisfy in order to write files to XP? It's sort of lost in "no man's land" between Mac and Windows.
    G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

It is "Read-only". I have been told in a Windows discussion group that the Read-only attribute is on by default for all Windows XP (Home Edition) folders. It cannot be removed; the system restores a user-removed read-only attribute on all folders.
However; my issue has been resolved. I cannot difinitively say what fixed the problem. There were some UDP ports I opened on the XP after reading some Apple Tech Articles, and after that my router needed rebooting, and now the issue has vanished. Sorry I can't report the fix, but I'm glad to be functioning again.
    Thank you,
    Jay Young
