After following instructions for three different solutions that did NOT work; I found the solution that did work
on the support site for Syamntec.
Readers - Please, you must be VERY familiar with pc jargon and windows vernacular to accomplish the reset
of ALL the permissions in your registry.
Follow the ditrections below and pay attention to the notes for those running 64bit Win7.
Step one, back up the registry.
Step two, go to the MS KB: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=e8ba3e56-d8fe-4a91-93cf -ed6985e3927b&displaylang=en and download the file that installs subinacl. It is an MSI file, and will do a quick install of a few Microsoft files.  Hint: Look in the folder listed below, "subinacle.exe" may already be there.
Step three, create a batch file (subinacle.bat) with the following commands:  (Use Notepad - copy & paste, not the red stuff)
cd /d "Program Files\Windows Resource Kits\Tools" (only for 32bit/x86 machines)
    subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f
    subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CURRENT_USER /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f
    subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f
    subinacl /subdirectories %SystemDrive% /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f
    subinacl /subdirectories %windir%\*.* /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f
    secedit /configure /cfg %windir%\inf\defltbase.inf /db defltbase.sdb /verbose
For 64bit machines substitute for first line of bat file:
                        cd /d "c:\program files (x86)\windows resource kits\tools"
Step four, run the batch file. Let it run until the Command Prompt screen closes, may take 30 minutes or more.
Step five, reboot the machine and run the install again.
Ladies and Gentlemen; this worked for me and allowed immediate installation of two application packages I had been trying for three months!  (Including ITunes 10.5)

  • When I try to reinstall iTunes, I see the error "Could not open key: UNKNOWN\Components\..."

    Hello, everyone.
About a month ago, iTunes was working fine (save for the fact I couldn't update it. No matter if I tried automatically or manually, it would tell me it couldn't be updated or that the update failed.) I don't exactly remember if I was trying to update when iTunes stopped working. All I remember is one day I went to open it and it kept giving me an error. So, I unistalled it. Then, I removed the files from the registry and other places with my Windows Clean Uninstaller--just to make sure it was completely off. When I tried to re-install, it would stop in the middle of installing and give me this:
It would rollback the changes and then keep installing. However, when I tried to open it after installation, I'd get this:
I've tried uninstalling and re-installing a few times. I've also tried adjusting my administrative settings (This would be the second program that has claimed I don't have sufficient priveledges, so I assmued it was me). However, no matter who I gave administrative priveledges too, the same thing reoccured. A
I've tried finding the key to make sure it existed, but I couldn't find it on my computer (At least, not through the C drive or anything. Do I have to use the command prompt or something?).
If anyone's got any advice, give a shout. I'm really getting sick of my programs acting up.

    Found a solution!
Follow the extended version of these directions here:

    Worked like a charm!

I'm not sure how they're implementing the patch registration tool in the automated Fixit, but ... fingers crossed ... it might also be of some help with the \Components\ keys we're having grief with here.)

  • Re "Could not open key: UNKNOWN\Components\[LongStringOfLettersAndNumbers]\[LongStringOfLettersAndNumbe rs]" error messages when installing iTunes for Windows

In answering this, B Noir had it almost correct.  What he missed was that in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\UserData \S-1-5-18\Components one must also make sure that when right clicking on components/permissions, that the active user is allowed Full Control.

Many thanks for the heads up, Mac. In recent times, I've also seen that reported during a troubleshoot of a Safari variation of the issue:
Re: Trouble installing Safari Update On Windows
Plausibly we might be looking at two different subvariations of the issue.
Doublechecking something ... did your key (in the error message) have the UNKNOWN\Components\[LongStringOfLettersAndNumbers]\[LongStringOfLettersAndNumbe rs] structure? Or was it just a UNKNOWN\Components\[LongStringOfLettersAndNumbers] (no slash and no second alphanumeric string), like rona's key?

  • ITunes 10.7 installation error:  "Could Not Open Key," etc. & Privileges error

This error pops up in the middle of my iTunes installation; After hitting okay, the installation proceeds and then another error message reading:
"Apple Mobile Devices Failed To Start.  Please make sure you have sufficient privleges... etc."
I don't know what to do about both of these errors, so if you find a solution please e-mail me:  [email protected]

    try with this one
uninstall all the apple application S/w like Quicktime, Bonjour,

  • Could not open key UNKNOWN

I am having a problem upgrading from iTunes 9.0.07 to 9.0.2. I've been trying to use the 64-bit installer and have tried disabling my anti-virus software.
I had this same problem when I was running Windows Vista Home Premium SP2 64-bit on this same computer.
At first, when I would download, I had to Download Only and then install.
When I tried to install iTunes manually, it would load very slowly at Copying Files and then say it was Rolling Back Action. After that, it would say that, "The installer encountered errors before iTunes could be configured."
I tried everything people suggested on help forums, the discussions here, and the Trouble installing iTunes or QuickTime for Windows help article in Support.
After uninstalling iTunes, making a backup of my iTunes music from Documents and getting rid of anything else iTunes, QuickTime or Apple related, I tried downloading again from the website (using Firefox). I had the problem that iTunes said it couldn't be downloaded without QuickTime. Okay, easy fix, right? I tried downloading and installing QuickTime and these errors came up:
    Could not open key:
    UNKNOWN\Components\69413F169B198734FA40BC8B73511DB0\108B43C0CEA676640B35306AE7D2 4051.
Verify that you have sufficient access to that key, or contact your support personnel.
    and
    Could not open key:
    UNKNOWN\Components\9C4307835821FFF47864EE6DABC09AA9\EA2C92A1FBE18F42A12C111C5AAD DDA.
Verify that you have sufficient access to that key, or contact your support personnel.
So then I tried doing what jnd73 said in a different discussion: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2151409&tstart=0&messageID=102 87668#10287668
And I found I couldn't do half of what jnd73 said. Either because it already knows I'm the admin, or because I don't have sufficient access to the key. I can't even get another admin user to download iTunes successfully. I don't know if it's a permissions issue.
The "The installer encountered errors before iTunes could be configured." problem started when I moved from Windows XP Home Edition SP3 32-bit to Windows Vista Home Premium SP1 (Had to update to SP2) 64-bit. I moved from a separate computer (Toshiba Satellite L35-S2151) to this one. I had to move all of my files from my last backup and re-download applications. I think what I did was I moved all of my old iTunes Program Files along with everything instead of just the iTunes folder in My Documents. So, when I downloaded the new iTunes, it didn't make new folders and used the old ones. I was able to make iTunes recognize all of the music I didn't buy through iTunes after I manually found the files, but iTunes never updated correctly.
I'd think now that I got rid of all of the old folders that now I'd be able to install without any problems.
    Can anyone help?

I was having the same problem, but I found the solution to the problem.
First, click on Start and search "regedit" without the quotations. Open it up, click on "Edit: in the drop down menu. Next, click "Find" and search for your folder components, not the key component, which is in your case: 69413F169B198734FA40BC8B73511DB0
    and
    9C4307835821FFF47864EE6DABC09AA9
They should be folders, and inside the folders, there should be a key with the name of that 2nd key. Example, inside the 69413F169B198734FA40BC8B73511DB0 folder should be a key named 108B43C0CEA676640B35306AE7D24051, and the same for the other folder.
Now, to gain permissions for these keys, right-click on the folders, and select "Permissions". Where it says "Groups or User Names", click "Add". Then select "Advanced". Next, select "Find Now" and select the "Everyone" user. Click OK, then OK again, and you should be on the permissions window. For "Groups of User Names", select Everyone and select the "Full Control" check box for Everyone. Then click OK.
Do the same for the other folder. Be careful; for me, there was 3 folders with the same key name, and I repeated the steps above for all 3 in order to make it work. Just check the folders under your folder to see if it has the same name, and if it does, repeat the steps on that folder.
This method worked for me after trying a million different solutions. Hopefully, it works for you too. If it doesn't work, feel free to reply back. And if does work, please reply back, just so I know it did work.
    Good luck =]

Hi there, so i was installing the new version of iTunes (10.6) and then in the middle of the process a box came up saying "Could not open key:UNKNOWN\Components\ ~~~~a lot of numbers and letters~~~~~\ ~~~~~~a lot of numbers and letters~~~~.Verify that you have sufficient acess to that key, or contact your support personnel.
Right now i have 3 different keys that show up during the installation, each in a different box.

These ones are tricky. But the following instructions are worth a try.
First do a complete uninstall of iTunes and related components (but don't reinstall just yet), as per the following document:
Removing and reinstalling iTunes, QuickTime, and other software components for Windows Vista or Windows 7
    a. Launch regedit (Start >> Search Programs and Files >> type Regedit and open the regedit that comes up.)
    b. Access the following Location: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\UserData \S-1-5-18\Components
    c. Perform the following actions
    i. Right Click on Components Folder
    ii. Select Permissions
iii. Select Full Control and Read Permissions options
    iv. Select Advanced Button
    v. Select Owner Tab
vi. Select to Change Owner to the Administrators
vii. Check the option “Replace owner on subcontainers and objects”
viii. Select OK when prompted that it may not change all.
    ix. Select Apply
    x. Select Apply again
    xi. Exit the Registry Editor
Now try reinstalling iTunes again. Does it go in properly this time?
