Error Creating Image of HDD Mountain Lion

I am encountering a strange issue while trying to create a backup image of my Macbook Pro hard drive. I am using a 2012 Macbook Pro retina with OS X 10.8.4. I am booting into recovery mode and trying to create an image but I get Error -61 every time. The steps I followed are below.
Connected 1.5 TB external hard drive via USB
Booted into recovery mode by holding Command + R on boot
Opened Disk Utility
Select Macintosh HD
Clicked Verify Disk (no issues were found)
Clicked New Image button
Named the image and set the destination to my External hard disk
Hit Save (this is where error -61 gets triggered)
From what I gathered error -61 is related to permission issues. The external harddrive I am using is formated in NTFS. I suspect that may be the issue but I thought OS X has full support for NTFS at this point, or at least I hope so considereing Linux has had it for a few years now and NTFS is extremely popular considering Windows still dominates the desktop market. Do I really need to use a disk formated in FAT32 or OS X's native file system? I thought I would ask before I start messing with disk partitions.

OSX does not have write support for NTFS.

  • App Store - Error 13 - Cannot download/install Mountain Lion

    Hello,
    I tried to upgrade to Mountain Lion via the App Store on my early 2011 MacBook Pro running Lion OS X. Whenever I try to purchase Mountain Lion I am greeted with an error 13 message. I have followed the various other forums suggesting I delete file ~/Library/Cookies/com.apple.appstore.plist in the App Store cookies however this fails to work.
    I have also tried the following:
    Per post above, enable debug menu via
    defaults write com.apple.appstore ShowDebugMenu -bool true
    Sign out
    Clear cookies AND reset the app, using debug menu
    Select Menu->Store->Check for unfinished downloads
    Wait for the downloads to finish and then
    restart the app store app.
    But it failed to work! :(
    Thanks in advance for any help as at the moment I am unable to install Mountain Lion and it's rather annoying!

  • Error creating //image file

    I don't know if anyone out there is still getting this error message, but I have found that by simply removing the "/" in the FTP dialog box under "host directory" your problem is solved. Apparently Muse adds the "/" and if you have one in the dialog box, there will be two instead of one causing the error. I am not a tech and just discovered this fix. Hope it helps!

  • Error creating image

    Im getting error when trying to create an image from array
    when i am reading the image as array from the network
    public void write(OutputStream out) throws IOException{
        DataOutputStream dout = new DataOutputStream(out);
        //Write mood name
        dout.writeUTF(m_moodName);
        if(m_img == null){
          //Write there is no image
          dout.writeBoolean(false);
        }else{
          //Write there is image
          dout.writeBoolean(true);
          PngEncoder pngEncoder = new PngEncoder(m_img);
          byte[] array = pngEncoder.pngEncode();
          //Write the array length
          dout.writeInt(array.length);
          //Write the array
          dout.write(array);
          dout.flush();
      public void read(InputStream in) throws IOException{
        DataInputStream din = new DataInputStream(in);
        //Read mood name
        m_moodName = din.readUTF();
        //Read if there is image
        boolean bool = din.readBoolean();
        if(bool == true){
          //Read byte array length
          int length = din.readInt();
          byte[] array = new byte[length];
          //Read to byte array
          din.readFully(array);
          m_img = Toolkit.getDefaultToolkit().createImage(array);
      }This is the exception that i am getting
    Uncaught error fetching image:
    java.lang.NegativeArraySizeException

    m_img = Toolkit.getDefaultToolkit().createImage(array);and here is PNG encoder that i am using
    http://catcode.com/pngencoder/
    please help...
    shay

    There are many possible reasons, for example:
    - pngEncoder produces wrong result.
    - byte array is corrupted on transition.
    I'd suggest to save this byte array as file and check if this image can be open by any image viewer.
    Also, it seems Image I/O is applicable in your scenario.
    Consider using it because it is recomeded API to work with images nowadays
    (unless you have something ImageIO can not handle, e.g. animated images)

  • Error when trying to install Mountain Lion - says hard disk is damaged :(

    I downloaded and installed Mountain Lion on my iMac today - without any problems. But when I downloaded it to my Macbook pro (bought 2010) I get an error message telling me the installation cannot continue due to hard disk error My harddisk was fine before the installation, to my knowledge ...
    Of course I tried disk utility (during the installation) and it tells me the disk needs to be repaired but I can´t choose "Repair disk" since it is grey (no write permissions it says). What can I do? I really need help!!!

    I rarely post, however, because of a major screw up with Mountain Lion, I will.  I have been using mac computers since 1987, have obviously installed and upgraded multiple OS new and upgrades and never, I mean never had a problem with any of them, until now.  The install stalled with the message that the hard disk needed repair.  I thought all of my data was lost, except for time machine backup, which was not as current as it should have been.  Losing that data would have been a royal pain.
    Went through the restore OS from Time Machine, then tried to repair the disk with apple disk repair utility.  Not repairable.  Why?  I still don't have a clue.  After reading multiple threads, decided to go ahead and buy DiskWarrior.  This was a weird experienc.  Loaded it onto external hard drive, hooked my MacBook Pro as Target disk.  Loaded in DiskWarrior as hardware probelm.  ????  Immediately went online to see what advice about this message.  Looked like a massive coincidence had hit my laptop.  Worked perfectly until loading Mountain Lion, the decided to have hard disk melt down.  Suddenly, DiskWarrior indicated it was ready to rebuild my directory.  The hardware warning was gone.  A few minutes later, directory repaired.  Rebooted, same problem.  Can't load OS X, need to repair hard disk.  Apple disk repair still unable to repair disk.  Used DiskWarrior, repaired it no problem.
    Deleted original OS 10.8 dmg.  Rebooted and downloaded fresh copy of OS 10.8.  This time install went flawlessly.  Mountain Lion transferred all info flawlessly.  Mid 2009 MacBook Pro running flawlessly and actually more smoothly now than in Lion.
    1.  I think original download was somehow corrupted and that is what screwed up the disk directory.
    2.  I do not know why apple Disk Utility would not repair the disk and Disk Warrior would.  Expensive fix, but ultimately worthwhile.  Did it mysefl and did not have to mess with "Genius" bar.
    3.  I will never go so long without backup again.  That was a big mistake.
    My advice:
    1.  Be sure you have smooth download of entire Mountain Lion file, if not, start over.  My download was paused a couple of times.
    2.  If the install is messed up and you need Disk Repair, buy DiskWarrior and repair directory, it works flawlessly.  If it initially says your disk has hardware problem, wait a few minutes while it finishes entire evaluation.  It may well disappear like mine did, then actually repair the directories without a problem.
    3.  Be sure you have deleted old OS 10.8 Install file and load fresh one.
    4.  Install OS 10.8 and you should be OK.
    5.  Good luck.
    Mountain Lion seems to have some problems, but many of them may be due to server overload at apple, delayed download with incorporated unrecognized code problems.  If there is any delay, start over and get a smooth download.
    Disk Utility is too light weight.  Apple needs to beef it up.  This is my biggest complaint.  Apple utility should be able to fix disks.  We should not have to spend $100 to fix a disk, but there you are.
    Once fixed however, back to usual beautiful, flawless apple experience.

  • "The product distribution file could not be verified. It may be damaged or was not signed." error while downloading OS X Mountain Lion

    I paid for the Mountain Lion, was downloading perfect. When almost 1 gb of downloading was left then this error occured "The product distribution file could not be verified. It may be damaged or was not signed." and stopped downloading and now every time i try to download it this error occurs
    What should i do now, i paid for it and couldn't even download it now.

    You'll need to re-try the download.
    If you have a flaky network connection, or if you're behind a proxy server, there can be issues.
    The App Store knows you paid so you won't have a problem trying to re-download, but you will have to re-download.
