Error: "File is Open and in Use by Another Application...."

I'm trying to print to tape using the 'Print to Video' option in the 'File' menu. The media being printed is in HDV format. During the 'conforming HDV Video...' process that runs prior to recording to tape, I'm getting the error message mentioned in the subject line of this post. There are no other apps. open except for FCP, so it is FCP that is locking up its own files during this process. Anyone know how to get around this bug?

open preferences, open spotlight preferences, click the privacy tab. Drag the folders or drives you want spotlight to leave alone into the window.
Spotlight is an annoying application that is constantly cruising your system for no good reason that I can fathom, but it must have some use. When spotlight is looking at your media files, you are dead in the water for fcp.
Same thing if you have anti virus software running.

  • File Error: The Specified file is open and in use by this or another app...

I have imported a string of pictures and dragged them into the FCP timeline. I render them and it renders a certain percentage then it stops and says "File Error: The Specified file is open and in use by this or another application."
After reading this, I quit out of FCP, restarted my computer, opened FCP, nothing other program, tried to render again and same thing happened. It renders part of it then the error message pops up, then I can render again and it will do another percent then it will pop again and so on.
Suggestions, or does anyone know why this happened? Thank you very much for your time.

okay - don't know where you've got your scratch disc set but hopefully it's to another drive other than your boot.
The same drive where your render files should be located, ie some drive other than your boot drive.
Can you copy the jpegs over to that drive into a folder.
Delete them from your tl, delete them from your proj. Save your project. Close fcp.
If they're on your boot drive - delete them.
Reopen fcp and Reimport them from the new location.
Sorry for all the steps - but we have no idea how you have configured fcp or your level of experience. Trying to cover all the bases ...

  • FILE ERROR: The Specified file is open and in use...

FILE ERROR: The Specified file is open and in use by this or another application.
I get this error when I import a .MOV created by Live Type. All applications, except FCP, are closed. I can reboot the computer and get the same thing. It happens when I try and "render all". Thanks.

It's probably either spotlight looking at the files, or some anti-virus program thinking your render is a virus.

  • There was an error opening this document. This file is already open or in use by another application

I cannot open any PDF documents. I receive one of two error messages:
"There was an error opening this document. This file is already open or in use by another application."
"This file is in use. Enter a new name or close the file that's open in another program."
I do not know how to open the document in another program, so I am perplexed how it could be open in another program.
I tried Repair the Adobe Installation from within Adobe Reader and from the Control Panel (Control Panel\Programs\Programs and Features\Uninstall or change a program) using the Change option. I'm assuming they are the same process, although I'm not sure. Neither method worked. I rebooted after each.
I'm at work at a huge federal agency, so we're of course on a network. It takes several days to receive agency IT help, which is why I'm asking here. I can open Word and text documents. Nothing else seems to be amiss on the 'ol pc.
    Adobe Reader 11.0.05
    Windows 7
As you can tell, I have only limited knowledge of the possible issues.
    Thanks!

    Shared network drive.
I was not able to open the PDF documents via Notepad.
Interestingly, and perhaps supportive of your hypothesis, I subsequently had problems with Outlook wherein I could not save or close an email I was writing because "you do not have permission." I rebooted my computer and now Outlook works fine (and it save my email, thank goodness), and I can open PDF documents.
Hopefully it will stay this way. If not, I'll be back!
Thank you very much for offering to help.

  • "File is already open or in use by another application"

I get "File is already open or in use by another application" when opening a PDF in Acrobat and Reader. Only happens intermittently.Files are on a network share.
It doesn't seem to happen as often if Acrobat/Reader are already running. Sometimes it works on the 2nd try, other times it takes upwards of 7 or 8. Not entirely sure if this is an Adobe issue as I've completely reinstalled both programs.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

    Jenifer,
I've been dealing with this problem for a year, and it is a big time waster. Here is a solution someone gave me which resolves the problem. However, there is a tradeoff- one problem for another.
There is a file named aiicon.dll in Program Files > Common Files > Adobe > Shell. If you rename this file to aiiconold.dll (don't delete it), the problem with saving and deleting files will be resolved. However, the tradeoff is that you will lose your Illustrator thumbnails for your AI files. See for yourself. I've been doing it this way for a month or two, and I can live without the thumbnails most of the time. The nice thing about renaming the aiicon.dll file is that you can go back to the original name anytime, and everything will be as it was in the beginning.
I guess Illustrator has an incompatibility issue with the new operating systems. I don't think there are any perfect solutions. But I keep looking. I am as frustrated with AI as you are.

  • This file is already open or in use by another application Error Message

I can't seem to save my AI files any more without getting an error message stating, "This file is already open or in use by another program." None of the previous forums have helped to resolve this problem. The problem begins when I open an Illustrator file that I have previously created, make a few changes, then try to save it under the same name. I am forced to change the name, which it then saves under the new name. Then, I have to restart the computer in order to delete the old file. This entire process takes enormous amounts of time. Working on WinXP using AI CS. I've researched this problem for months, but can't resolve it myself.

  • Error says"Your camera is in use by another application"...no apps running

I just purchased a brand new iSight. I connected it to my G5 but when I start up iChat and click on the green video camera icon at the top right, I get a new window that just says "your camera is in use by another application". I don't have other applications running. When I click on the preferences button at the bottom of that window I get another new window with some options for microphone and bandwidth limit. The iSight is not even an option for microphone.
I tryed the iSight on a MacBook Pro and a iBook, it works perfect on both so I don't think there is anything wrong with the iSight.
A few months ago I tryed to run a logitech camera on the G5 but couldn't get iChat to recognize that camera either. I wonder if did something that is coming back to haunt me.
I downloaded the latest iChat, tried all the basic stuff like removing the logitech software and restarting the computer...I am running out of ideas...Help, please

  • "File x is already in use by another application."

Very interesting, why won't InDesign let me import a Word file that is currently open in Word, a thing, I think, I never experienced with any other computer application?

Just the way it is. Same thing with Excel.
    It's annoying but normal.

  • IChat says my camera is in use by another application

I recently bought an IceCam2 and plugged it into my computer, but when I open ichat to use the video, it says that the camera is in use by another application, but I am running no other applications. I have tried to restarting my computer, which has not helped, and I also restarted again reseting the PRAM which also did nothing...please help!

    Hi.
I had this same exact issue with my PowerMac G4. I would plug in my new USB 2.0 MacAlly IceCam2 and it would work in all other programs except for iChat. I noticed that in the other programs the camera was very slow (response time) but was functional. After searching everywhere I some how decided to unplug it from one of the two built in USB ports (shown below) and plugged it into an expansion port on a PCI USB 2.0 card I recently installed.
    http://developer.apple.com/documentation/Hardware/DeveloperNotes/Macintosh_CPUs-G4/PowerMacG4/3Input-Output/chapter_4_section2.html
    USB Ports
The PowerMac G4 computer has two external Universal Serial Bus (USB) ports on the back and two on the keyboard. The USB ports are used for connecting the keyboard and mouse as well as additional I/O devices such as printers, scanners, and low-speed storage devices. The USB ports are off of the USB controller connected to the PCI bus.
Each USB port is connected to a separate USB root hub, allowing both USB ports to support 12 Mbps devices at the same time with no degradation of their performance. The USB root hubs also connect to the internal USB modem and Bluetooth modules and to the USB port on the ADC monitor connector.
The USB ports comply with the Universal Serial Bus Specification 1.1 Final Draft Revision. The USB register set complies with the Open Host Controller Interface (OHCI) specification.
Well you see it right, my problem was that I had the webcam that required a USB 2.0 connection plugged into a USB 1.1 port! I wish I would have known this before hand but I assumed that since the computer was built during the reign of the USB 2.0 era that the USB ports on my computer were in fact USB 2.0 and not the old 1.1 standards!
Well I plugged in the MacAlly USB 2.0 IceCam2 into the USB 2.0 slot on my expansion 2.0 USB card > opened up iChat > works perfect now! If anyone is receiving the very disappointing error message about "camera is in use by another application" message with a USB webcam - verify you are using the correct USB standard (ensure the camera and port matches).
I wish I would have known this a few days ago!
    Thanks,

  • Help - "Acrobat is being used by another application and cannot open PDF files until the other application is closed."

    Hello,
I searched this site and google for this error terminology and come up dry.  I support a user who has been for years using Acrobat 5 (yes, I know...) to read files in a client DB program, as well as other PDF files on their PC.  In the last week or so, they have started gatting this error "Acrobat is being used by another application and cannot open PDF files until the other application is closed." any time they attempt to open a PDF file attached to an email (via Outlook).
It is my understanding that they cannot upgrade to a newer version of Acrobat because of limitations of their client software, but had not previously had any issues viewing PDF notes from the DB, and PDF attachments in their email.
I have tried uninstalling and re-installing, as well as tried using Adobe Reader 7 & 9 in conjunction with Acrobat to try to get around this issue, but have not been successful.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Jesse

I don't have an answer to your technical problem. The product I assume is Acrobat that you are talking about (based on the post title), Adobe is the company name. This is a good place to ask questions on Acrobat if folks can figure out what you are talking about. They will ask for the product version number (like AA9.3.3), operating system, and other applications if appropriate. Also, just what you are doing that generates the message.
As for Adobe, you are not likely to get an answer from them here in the user forum. You will be lucky if you can get an answer if you can contact them and not be on hold for more than an hour (sorry, this is why a lot of folks end up in the forum).
So, to help others try to answer your question, what are the products and versions involved? What OS? What are you doing when the message comes up.

Are there photos in the Library? If not then just trash it and launch iphoto. It will make a new one.
If there are pics in it then Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • OneNote recordings "We're sorry, we can't open the file because it is in use by another program."

Constantly, OneNote breaks and screws up my recordings that are synced with my lectures. It is such a fragile process and very frustrating. As soon as I'm done recording, I press stop. When I test the recording, it says, "We're sorry, we can't open
the file because it is in use by another program." I just recorded and then stopped it. If i close and reopen OneNote, it says, "oneNote is cleaning up from the last time it was open." And the recording still says it's in use by another program.
I've even restarted the laptop and it still won't open. The only way i could salvage the file is if I copy and paste it into another folder, and then it will open through windows media player, but all the live syncing with my notes are gone. Where are these
files stored? If I could save the sound and find the file/format that holds the syncing data again, I could work around this. They are no where to be found on my computer. Other forums give locations, but my folders are empty. Some other recordings work and
sync nicely, but I have still lost many recordings to this error. However, if I play a file and then close it without stopping playback, that file, too, will now be unusable. It will be stuck as "We're sorry, we can't open..." no matter what i do
and again i have to copy/paste it into a new folder and then move it back. I had the same problem on my last laptop. I record in Windows Media Audio 10 Professional at 192 kbs, 48 kHz, and stereo CBR. I need the high quality because the lecturer is too quiet.
It seems to happen when I record long lectures, 45 min+. Shorter recordings tend to work fine.
Please help, this would make note taking so much easier.

    A bit of a confusion on my part;
Now we have created these REPORTS using Basic Crystal Report 10.5, which comes bundled with Visual Studio 2008 and .Net Framework 3.0. Now on our machines, we have never experienced any issues.
Going by the above, you should have references to CR assemblies of version 10.5.3700 only. No other references.
    Now, looking at this paragraph:
BUT on the DEV server (web server) which has .net Framework 3.0 and in its GAC its has CRYSTAL DLLs version 11.5 (required to create an Object of ReportClass and its related functions) ; sometimes we get the following error while exporting crystal report to pdf:
I wonder what runtime was deployed to the server. E.g.; if you are using CR 10.5, your assemblies will be 10.5.3700 and you should be deploying the following runtime (depending on 32 bit / 64 bit, etc.):
    CRRedist2008_ia64.msi
    https://smpdl.sap-ag.de/~sapidp/012002523100006255262008E/CRRedist2008_ia64.zip

One way to check on what is actually loading is to use the [Modules|https://smpdl.sap-ag.de/~sapidp/012002523100006252802008E/modules.zip] utility.

  • Word 2007 - Save as Pdf gives error - This file is in use by another application or user

I have MS Office 2007 Small Business.
For months I have been using the "Save as PDF/XPS" option to save my word documents as PDF files.
All of a sudden, when I click on the publish button within the "save as PDF dialog", I get the error:
"This file is in use by another application or user."
    - I have tried creating a new word document and I still get this error when I try to save-as pdf.
    - I have tried opening a document that previously was able to be saved-as-a-pdf, and it no longer works either.
    - I have tried saving from other office applications (excel, powerpoint) that also get errors now.
I have not personally installed any new software that I recall between when this worked and stopped working for me.
As far as I can tell there have been no updates explicitly for save-as-pdf in office.
Is anyone else seeing this problem all-of-a-sudden?
    Thanks.
    jlk

I just encountered this problem while trying to save a pdf from Excel 2007.  I had recently updated to Adobe Reader 9.1.
I received the same error message you're reporting here when I went to Word 2007 and tried to save a pdf file from it as well.
    I uninstalled Adobe Reader 9.1.
Reinstalled the Office 2007 pdf plug-in
Successfully created pdf files from word and from Excel (which is what I needed to do in the first place).
I then reinstalled Adobe Reader 9.1 so I could read the PDF files I had just created in Excel and word.
I then tried to create pdf files from word and excel.  Error messages are back and I'm unable to create pdf's from word or excel.
So.. why does Office 2007 pdf plugin not work when Adobe Reader 9.1 is installed?
Frankly I'm getting tired of uninstalling Adobe Reader 9.1 every time I need to create a pdf file in Word or Excel.

  • Why does iPhoto give me this error when opening it " Your photo library is either in use by another application or has become unreadable"

Good Day. I have been trying to open my iPhoto and i keeps giving me the following error message " Your photo library is either in use by another application or has become unreadable " Then it suggests I push the Option and Command button at time of opening iPhoto and the 4 options given do not work as well. My operating system is OS X Vers 10.8.5. Not sure the iPhoto application as it won't open for me to tell.
Pls help . Im afraid of losing all my pics.

Make a back up now. If you have any vaule in Your photos always have a back up.
    Most Simple Back Up
Drag the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to another Disk. This will make a copy on that disk.
    Slightly more complex:
Use an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically. Examples of such apps: Chronosync or DejaVu . But are many others. Search on MacUpdate
In Library Manager the Rebuild command is under the File menu. There's also an excellent Help available.
