Error icon when trying to boot up

I was working on my black macbook when suddenly everything froze up, I gave it time to load but I eventually just restarted. Since then my computer starts with a grey screen then shows a file icon with a question mark in the center, it doesn't boot up and eventually just shuts off after flashing this icon for a few minutes. What's happening and what can I do?

Then the best thing to do is call up Apple and request a box be mailed to you. They'll send the box free of charge & do any repairs that are necessary. Alternatively, you can have your installation discs sent to you from your home to do some more troubleshooting.
Unfortunately, if you send the machine in for repair, they won't save any data off the hard drive.

  • Windows Server 2012R2 Fatal Error C0000034 when trying to boot

    Hi.
We patched our Server 2012R2 DC today to fix against CVE-2014-6324 using Windows update. After rebooting, we are now unable to boot and receive the error stated in the title when trying to boot.
Our primary DC however had no issues applying the update and rebooted perfectly fine.
I can only seem to find articles relating to Windows 7 SP1 regarding this error code. Is there a method for recovering this with Server 2012R2?
    Thanks.

    Hi,
I think we could check if other update installed correctly.
Did you try to remaing pending.xml file to check the result?

  • RAM error beep when trying to boot install disc

I'm trying to re-install OSX in order to get a clean system and upgrade the OS. However, if I try to boot from the OSX Leopard install disc, I get the three RAM error beeps. I bought new compatible RAM (2x2GB SODIMM), tried with one of the old banks, then the other, in both available slots, then the new RAM - nothing helps: Booting the system with no install disc inserted works fine, having it inserted results in the beeps. It doesn't matter if I try straight boot, pressing C, using rEFIt or going for the device's own pre-boot OS selection menu, nothing helps.
I had the screen replaced on warranty a couple weeks ago, but I do not assume that poses a problem. Can anyone help?
    Thanks!

Why do you have rEFIt installed?
To be able to multi-boot OSX, Win7, and Ubuntu.
What is your machine and what OS X does it have?
Early 2011 MacBook Pro 15" non-glare screen. 4GB stock RAM.
    What's on the disk 10.5 or 10.6?
The disk is Leopard, as far as I can remember. I believe I got Snow Leopard over the App store.
Have you cleaned the disk, use another?
I don't exactly have another disc ... but I tried to image them to a SD card and that gave the same results.
What are you trying to do exactly?
Completely wipe the drive (low-level) to be able to sell the device.

Bummer. I'm not really doing this for speed though, just for total storage volume and constant, worry-free, no-brainer back-up. I guess RIAD in general is something I need to study up on. Would a simple mirror of one 500GB drive to another (back-up) - and do that twice - be a better, more reliable way to go?
I've used Tri-Backup3/4 for years for Backups, it's fast, automatic, reliable, works in the background if you wish...
Back-up software always seemed to have some kind of a hiccup to it, but I'll certainly look into Tri-Backup3/4. I used to Retrospect years ago, a rather fussy thing if I recall.
Now, on the Safe Mode boot - not a success BUT a different result!
I got the -36 again, but this time it was the external drive FILE that errored, not the OS-resident drive.
In other words, pre-Safe Mode the error said "...because some data in "ZillaHAL" could not be read or written." (ZillaHAL is my OS-X drive).
In Safe, it read, "...because some data in "WinXP Pro.vmem" could not be read or written."
"WinXP Pro.vmem" is the virtual machine file - which basically is a simple Mac volume (folder) containing all of the files to run my XP virtual machine.
Also, this time, a file* did manage to remain on the external drive whereas before, after the error, no file at all remained.
    * a generic icon appears, but it shows a size of 16+GBs. The actual file is 18.13GB - I did manage to shrink it down the other day (from it's previous 25GB).
Well, that's it for now. I'll be away for three days, so don't mind me if I cannot reply back for a spell.
    Thanks BD,

  • Error message when trying to open windows7 via vmwarefusion.

    error message when trying to open windows7 via vmwarefusion.;
Unable to open file "/Users/geraldw/Documents/Virtual Machines.localized/Windows 7.vmwarevm/Windows 7-000016.vmdk": The system cannot find the file specified.
I've completely uninstalled vmaware fusion. and would like to install a new copy of windows7 plus my vmware fusion3.0 that I have on a disk. I wonder if windows7 is still buried in my mac hard drive somewhere?  I can see some windows files on my mac but they appear a gray and can not be accessed. Could there be a problem installing a new copy of windows through boot camp?   It seems to do so wouldn't be a clean install as I suspect that windows 7 is still on the drive somewhere. I've tried to follow the path the file I listed above, but nothing comes up.  I'm almost certain  it was accidentally deleted completely from the hard drive as it was quarantined while using Clam X anti-virus. I'm a relatively new mac user and long time PC user, but a computer genius I am not. I don't want to have to reformat the whole mac machine and lose my current files, etc.
I've uninstalled vmare completely and reinstalled, it, but the problem persists.
    Any help?

You will probably get a better response asking this question in VMWare's forums for Fusion.
    Best of luck.

  • I have Mac OSX 10.5.8 and get java "error" message when trying to use research tool on Morningstar Java referred me to Apple but they had no update.Any ideas? thanks.e

I have a imac OSX 10.5.8 and get a java "error" message when trying to use a research tool on Morningstar.Java referred me to Apple but they had no updates. Any ideas? thanks.

    Well I solved my problem.
What still doesn't make sense though is that dragging iTune audio files directly on to the iTunes application icon gave me the error message... which is why I originally discounted it as being a potential link problem. If I had been able to get files to open normally (i.e. without an error message) I would have known it was a simple link problem. Strange.
Anyway... relinking my folder of audio files did the trick.
If you don't already know how here are the steps...
iTunes > Preferences > Advanced > click on the "Change" button and browse to the folder that contains all of your iTunes audio files... that's it.

Do you mean trying to purchase an iPhoto book?  Try rebooting and ordering again.  If that fails Boot into Safe Mode, Mac OS X: Starting up in Safe Mode, and try ordering from there.

  • What can I do to fix an old Power Mac G4 that gives an I/O error message when trying to access Entourage?

What can I do to fix an ld Power Mac G4 that gives an I/O error message when trying to access Entourage?

You mean when you try to just start it?
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.
