Error in burning a slideshow on iDVD

After creating a slideshow in iPhoto, I sent it to iDVD and tried to burn a DVD. However, at the very end of the process, a message appeared that said error # 34506 occurred. The DVD was still blank. What is error #34506?

Hi Fred,
Welcome to apple discussions.
Q: What is error #34506?
A: Essentially that's a burn and multiplex error often having to do with a bad audio file. Mp3's for example tend to corrupt very easily (as opposed to aiff which are larger file types but usually much more secure / stable; not to mention higher quality). That or it could be another type of file.
For example:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9994584&#9994584
other than the very good suggestion provided in the above link, have you tried making a disc image yet to the desktop from iDvd's file menu?
Then use apple's dvd player app to test actual playback. Assuming it plays as expected, then burn at 4x to Verbatim Dvd-R ... that or Taiyo Yuden or Maxell.
However please avoid using Memorex (at least while troubleshooting on this iDvd Forum).
Hope these suggestions help but if not just come on back. Good luck.

  • How to get good picture quality on a burned DVD slideshow using IDVD?

After producing a slideshow on IDVD from either jpg or psd photos, it looked great when I played the project. Picture quality was excellent. When I burned a DVD to share the slideshow with a friend and when I played this on the same computer, it had lost resolution and looks awful. I am using best quality but this made no difference. On a hdtv using a standard player, the quality is mediocre. Is there any way to get a decent picture quality. I have also burned a DVD and CD from the IPhoto album, and the quality is better. IPhoto will not burn a slideshow or at least I do not know how to. Can you produce decent quality DVD using IDVD or is there a better application to produce decent DVD of photo slideshows?

....or is there a better application to produce decent DVD of photo slideshows?
Yes. It's called DVDSP (apple's top of the line DVD Authoring application). It has a much longer learning curve than iDvd and is more $$$ but it does work well. The Help Menu alone is over 640 pages long. However, is this app significantly better than iDvd solely in terms of visual quality?.... No.
But it does offer many more tools to address visual artifacts on the finished DVD, more audio control, much better control of durations per slide, audio, buttons that work as expected, among other things. (for additional examples of this see chapter 12 of the DVDSP Help Menu / starting on p. 373).
Short of DVDSP, and much less money, you can also try these 2 third party apps which come highly recommended on this iDvd Forum:

At the moment most macs do not yet support burning to Blueray (which does offer much better results). Once this technology is more commonplace, then I believe we will see a significant improvement in what you are trying to do above.
Hope this is helpful but if not just come on back.

  • I burned a slideshow with iDVD, professional quality selected, 16:9 aspect ratio selected.  The quality of the finished product is much below that seen on my computer.  I have watched slideshows made by other imac users which look great.

I have burned a slideshow from an iphoto album through iDVD, with "pro quality and 16:9 aspect ratio" selected on a double layer dvd.  When viewed, the picture quality is much inferior to that of the photos on my computer.  I have viewed slideshows made others with mac software and the pictures are much better.  My tv is HD 1080 wide screen and disc player is new.  What am I missing?

That's more an iDVD problem and you should ask your question there: iDVD.

  • Burning iPhoto slideshow thru iDVD, poor quality

    Hello,
i am having quality issues concerning my slideshow when burned onto a DVD thru iDVD. the slideshow is created in iPhoto with photos taken with a 10 megapixel camera. the photos look great when viewed thru my camera on my HD flatscreen tv. when i play the burned DVD on my tv, they look like low resolution photos and not as large on the screen. i have "professional quality" and NTSC format selected in the project settings. when i view the backed-up photos saved on the burned DVD as a DVD-ROM on my computer, they look great. help, suggestions?

i doubt Apple would have included three settings of quality in it's program if it couldn't deliver. especially one entitled "professional quality".
That has NOTHING to do with the quality of the slideshows that are produced - 0.3 megapixels says it all!
'Best Peformance' uses fixed bit-rate encoding that produces a DVD with about as high a playback bit-rate as a player can handle. 'Best Performance' can fit up to 60 minutes of content on a single layer disc. 5 minutes or 55 minutes, the encoded bit rate is the same.
'High Quality' uses a fixed bit-rate encoding rate that approximately fills a DVD with your content (the fixed encoding bit-rate is adjusted based on your content length). 'High Quality' can fit up to 120 minutes of content on a single layer disc. If you have 60 minutes of content or less, the bit-rate will be close to the 'Best Performance' bit-rate (although experience has shown that 'Best Performance' looks better than 'High Quality with less than 60 minutes of content). 120 minutes of content will be compressed more than 60 minutes of content.
'Professional Quality' (new with iDVD '08) uses two pass variable bit-rate encoding. If you have 60 minutes of content or less, the bit-rate will be close to the 'Best Performance' bit-rate. 'Professional Quality' can fit up to 120 minutes of content on a single layer disc. As your content gets closer to 120 minutes, 'Professional Quality' will usually look better than 'High Quality'.

  • Burning a slideshow to a dvd.

When I burn a slideshow from iDVD, the words "my slideshow" appear on the screen. Is there a way to remove them or at least edit them?

Highlight and delete the text so you get this in the menu:
It will look like this in the finished project:

  • When I try to burn my slideshow.mov to a dvd disc, it will burn but when i put it in the dvd player it says 'disc error'. I have burned it thru iDVD before but forgot how to do it and it won't do it now. The slide show is on my desktop

Rather than burn directly to disk follow this workflow to help assure the best quality video DVD:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

  • Iphoto slideshow to idvd: quality & burning issues...

I've made a few slideshows in iphoto due to the Ken Burns effect and also the ability to choose full screen or widescreen. I made DVDs for friends with full and myself with wide for my widescreen- and that works fine.
My question is about the quality of the movies. Obviously a substantial loss of quality from viewing the show in iPhoto on my Powerbook...
Is there a better way to do this with better results? Using iMovie? (Never have used that app before..) Each show has 100-250 slides and I choose a music playlist from iTunes. I am a quality freak and looking the uncrisp images isn't too thrilling.
(Even when playing the disk image in the DVD Player on my Powerbook and comparing with the original project file- it's a little more fuzzy.)
Also, I just got an external Lacie burner (I have combo drive) and have much unsuccess with burning. I have repaired permissions and create as a disk image in iDVD. It plays back great from the disk image in DVD Player on Powerbook. This specific movie is 2.4 GB and I have 10.1 free dis space.
Problems: (tried with 2 or 3 different movies)
*Disk Utility will not burn the image. It begins and then stops and says there are errors (not specific)...
*iDVD goes through 4 or 5 steps and right at the end says "Errors during burning"
(I was also getting a multiplexing error, but I freed up some space and didn't get that last time)
*TOAST- Using the DVD-Video from Video-TS (as recommended on various boards) does not work. It finishes but won't verify and nothing plays...
*TOAST- using DVD-Video: The menu made in iDVD isn't functional. Can't choose different slideshows... Won't highlight, etc...
    *TOAST- using "Data" DVD-ROM (UDF):
THIS IS THE ONLY THING THAT HAS WORKED AND PROJECTS ARE ABLE TO BE VERIFIED. MENUS ARE FUNCTIONAL IN MY 2 DVD PLAYERS...
I have the newest versions of Toast and iPhoto and iDVD. It's been very frustrating. Can't figure out why iDVD and Disk Utility won't burn... and TOAST only works using "Data" instead of Video... My Powerbook is a 60 GB 12" G4 1.33 model. I'm so tempted to upgrade to a bigger hard drive and a Superdrive but I don't know if that will help anything.
    Thanks for listening!

Video DVDs are 720X480 (NTSC). Much lower resolution than straight iPhoto slideshows and your original photos. Nothing you can do about this until either HD-DVD or Blu-Ray technology come to the market and are affordable.
iMovie will not be better resolution after it is sent to DVD. You could export to HD resolution QT files (H.264, etc.) and play those on computers with QT and keep higher resolution. But those won't play with commercial DVD players.
Disk Utility will not burn the image.
Can you verify the mounted image with Disk Utility?
Can you burn other data DVDs with the finder and with Toast succesfully?
You should be able to use both the Video_TS drag into DVD-Video for Toast and the direct image burn in Toast, as well as Disk Utility. I wonder if there is an error in the image, so see if you can verify the mounted image with DU.

  • Error #-34506 when burning a DVD from iDVD 5.0.1

    Hi everybody,
Everytime I try to burn a a finished iDVD project (a big QuickTime movie), I get a message : "There were errors while multiplexing and burning", error#-34506. In reality the project wasn´t burned, the DVD is empty. When I burn a short slideshow - no problems. I tried different manufacturers of DVD-Rs to no avail.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
PowerMac 2GHz DP, 39 GB free harddisk space, MacOS 10.4.2, iLife 5, newest updates
    Regards, Adam

I have the exact same problem. I am running a brand new iMac G5 2ghz with 10.4.2 and iDVD 5.01 and QT 7.03. I have tried it by importing my DV and MOV files into iDVD. Same failure with differnt media, even skipping one clip that I thought might be problematic.
Have further tried it with different compression settings in preferences... high quality vs. high performance. Same error.
Imported movies into iMovie and tried to run iDVD from there.... everything crashed. After a reboot, tried it again, and this time at least got a description of the error... something to the effect of "there was burning error but the disk has been untouched and can be reused, please try again..."
Am no trying to reimport clips into imovie, and export as one movie in both DV and MOV formats, to try it again..
Apple help couldnt even find the error number much less offer any other help..
    IDEAS??

  • Can someone please tell me a simple but effective method for burning a slideshow to DVD? Now that the connection between iPhoto and iDVD no longer exists, I can't figure out a way to get there with an acceptable quality result.

Can someone please tell me a simple but effective method for burning a slideshow to DVD? Now that the connection between iPhoto and iDVD no longer exists, I can't figure out a way to get there with an acceptable quality result.

Export the slideshow out of iPhoto as a QT movie file via the Export button in the lower toolbar.  Select Size = Medium or Large.
Open iDVD, select a theme and drag the exported QT movie file into the open iDVD window being careful to avoid any drop zones.
Follow this workflow to help assure the best qualty video DVD:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.

If iDVD was not preinstalled on your Mac you'll have to obtain it by purchasing a copy of the iLife 09 disk from a 3rd party retailier like Amazon.com: ilife 09: Software or eBay.com.  Why, because iDVD (and iWeb) was discontinued by Apple over a year ago.
Why iLife 09 instead of 11?
If you have to purchase an iLife disc in order to obtain the iDVD application remember that the iLife 11 disc only provides  themes from iDVD 5-7.  The Software Update no longer installs the earlier themes when starting from the iLIfe 11 disk nor do any of the iDVD 7 updaters available from the Apple Downloads website contain them.
Currently the only sure fire way to get all themes is to start with the iLife 09 disc:
This shows the iDVD contents in the iLife 09 disc via Pacifist:
You then can upgrade from iDVD 7.0.3 to iDVD 7.1.2 via the updaters at the Apple Downloads webpage.

I'm trying to burn a dvd from idvd but I keep getting error message, broken assets, but when I check my drop zones and their content there's no error messages on any of them?

    Hi
And if You change view - in main "window/view field" so that You see the box-plot structure.
No exclamation marks there either ?
and non at the front page ?
iDVD do not copy Your material - only points to where it is stored. So if on any external hard disks, USB-memories, CDs or DVDs are missing - assetts are broken.
Or if You changed location of any material or directed iPhoto or iTunes or GarageBand to a new Library - Then iMovie/iDVD also get's lost.

  • Burning a slideshow from imovie to idvd doesn't work...Please help

    Hello,
I'm trying to burn a slideshow I created in imovie to DVD but it doesn't seem to work. Everytime I click on the burn icon in idvd it tells me to insert a blank DVD. Once i insert a blank dvd it spits it right out.
I'm getting married on July 1 and I need this slideshow to work.
    Please advise.

When you upload the site is has nothing to do with iWeb and people who work for the hosting companies and say that iWeb is the problem or is rubbish do not have a clue what they are talking about.  They use it as an excuse because they don't understand what they are doing.
What folder do you have to upload your site to on the server?  Is it called "public_html", or "htdocs" or something like this?  If so, then in the directory/path, where some can leave it blank, you can enter public_html or htdocs or whatever file you upload to on your server.  This should then work.
Your other option of course, is not to use the iWeb built in ftp, but to select publish to a local folder and then download Cyberduck - a dedicated ftp programme and use this to upload your site.  If you use Cyberduck, then you can connect directly with your server and you can see exactly where all your site files are being uploaded to and exactly what folder on your server you have to upload to.  If you use iWeb ftp, then you are working blind really and just hoping for the best.
Either try inserting the name of your folder in the directory/path section or publishing to a local folder and using Cyberduck to upload instead.

  • IDVD PAL and NTSC errors before burning-

    Hi anybody-
I'm now getting an error when I hit the button to burn a DVD in iDVD 7.0.3. The error say that I am trying to burn a PAL movie to to an NTSC disc. The movie is in a .mov format, and I have NTSC selected in project info, professional setting. If I change the encoder setting to bestr performance (i.e. lowest quality) the duration of the contents exceed disc capacity.
    And it just crashed, again.
Anybody have an idea? Am I missing something?
