Error in restoring ipod-error (1604)

Alright, so I tried to get the 1.1.4 ipod software upgrade and it just wouldn't work. Basically, my iTunes said that my ipod needed to be restored in order for it to be updated. So I clicked restore and it said that "Ipod cannot be restored...Error(1604). And after this it said I needed to restore it again. I kept pressing the restore button and nothing would happen except for that one error window to pop up. Also, on my ipod screen, it would have an iTunes icon and a USB cable connector with an arrow pointing at the icon. PLEASE SOMEONE HELP ME!!! I am in need of listening to my music!!!

Verify that you are connecting the ipod touch directly to a usb 2.0 port on your computer, not through a monitor or usb hub. Reboot your computer, on your ipod try changing settings>general>autolock to never before you attempt to update again.
If that doesn't help Try this posted in another thread:
Made sure my iPod was OFF (hold down the sleep button till red off slider appears - slide to turn off)
While plugging in your ipod and during the entire "restore" process hold down the "HOME" button.

  • IPod Touch will not turn on unattached, Restore error 1604/1611

Up through yesterday my iPod touch was working fine. However, after disconnecting it from syncing yesterday, it would not turn on. I have tried the manual reboot without success. The iPod will not turn on by just using the external power buttons. It will remain on when plugged into my computer until I try to restore it, at which time it shuts off and i get either Error 1604 or Error 1611. I've tried pretty much all the solutions I've found and none work. Any suggestions, at least on how to get it to stay on?

  • IPod restore error 1604

iPod Touch 1.1.3 restore error in iTunes 7.6 -- Windows XP Pro
I,ahem... JB'd... my iTouch, and I "DID NOT LIKE IT" so I tried restoring it. Now I get the error 1604 right after it is "Preparing iPod for restore..." screen, saying, "The iPod "iPod" could not be restored. An unknown error ocurred (1604)"
I have looked on Apple.com and even Googled it for hours. I tried rebooting, trying another USB port, trying another user on the computer, and draining the iPod's batttery. Also, when it is restoring, the "Connect to iTunes screen" is still active and the white cord has the circle progress thingy. Is this normal? I have restored it before and it used to show the Apple logo with the circle thingy. Also, when I connect the iPod when it is booted to the "SpringBoard" iTunes says that "The iPod could not be synced because the Apple Mobile Device Service is not active" even after I located the "AppleMobileDeviceService.exe" and opened it. After the error message goes away when I click "OK" the iPod reboots into "DFU Mode" (as I think it is called). Also, I can only reboot it to the SpringBoard if I use Zibri's ZiPhone 2.0 utility to "Verbose Boot."

For those of you who ask...
JB is an acronym for JailBreak. I didn't want to spell it out directly in an Apple hosted Help Discussion, seeing as I don't want to deal with the consequences. If you still don't know what the above term means or refers to, go ahead and google it.
DFU Mode: I suppose it stand for "Download Firmware Update" seeing as when I connect it during this mode that it has the error "Could not contact the iPod update server. Try again later" or something to that effect(my internet is not working, it is unrelated and the internet company is trying to solve the problem right now, but I am getting very impatient with them). I don't have any clue myself what it really stands for, and I can't find it anywhere on Apple.com. What exactly is DFU mode? I suppose it doesn't help even now, except for you to experience it for yourself:
To get into "DFU Mode" hold down the home and power buttons until the iPod is shut off. At this point, keep holding the home button, but release the power button until iTunes detects it in that mode. The screen should remain black after it is shut off. If it reboots, or ends up in "Connect to iTunes Restore Mode" with a picture of the cable and iTunes logo, please try again.
To get into restore mode with the iTunes logo and iPod cable, push AND hold the Home and power buttons until ou see the Apple logo. At the exact same moment you see the Apple logo, release the power button but keep holding the Home button until the above described screen is shown.
My question: What is the difference between the two modes, and would DFU mode fix the 1604 error I receive when I try to restore it in "Connect to iTunes mode"?

  • Why can't I restore my ipod touch version 2?  Error 1604?

How can I restore my Ipod Touch, version 2, ios 4.2.1?  I tried to do an original restore from ITunes.  It erased all of my files.  The Ipod now sits there with a screen suggesting to plug it into ITunes.  It is plugged in!  Itunes doesn't even recognize it as a "device".
I was able to repeat the process several times, by unplugging it, re-starting ITunes, and re-running the original restore.
I got the following message, "The Ipod could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (1604)."  I went to the "More Information" section, but none of the suggestions applied to me.
In this condition it is totally unusable!

    Error 1604
This error is often related to USB timing. Try changing USB ports, using a different dock connector to USB cable, and other available USB troubleshooting steps (troubleshooting USB connections. If you are using a dock, bypass it and connect directly to the white Apple USB dock connector cable. If the issue persists on a known-good computer, the device may need service.
If the issue is not resolved by USB isolation troubleshooting, and another computer is not available, try these steps to resolve the issue:
Connect the device to iTunes, confirm that the device is in Recovery Mode. If it's not in Recovery Mode, put it into Recovery Mode.
Restore and wait for the error.
    When prompted, click OK.
Close and reopen iTunes while the device remains connected.
The device should now be recognized in Recovery Mode again.
    Try to restore again.
If the steps above do not resolve the issue, try restoring using a known-good USB cable, computer, and network connection.

    Hello CHITDAYA
There is MANY troubleshooting steps that you could attempt to resolve this issue. however there is many, steps to follow in the following link
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1275
however I would recommend simply restore on another computer if you can get access to one. to save you a lot of time.
    Cheers

  • Ipod touch restore error 1604 / 1603

Hi, I plugged my new ipod touch into my computer but itunes did not show it, so I was told to restore it and i got an unknown error 1604 (sometimes 1603). I took it back an got a new one, and exactly the same thing has happened!
    Can anyone help at all?
    Thanks

Ok, A few things to check:
    - USB port must be USB 2.0
    - iTunes must be updated to 7.4.3.1
    - XP must have Service pack 2 installed
If all these are present and correct, try this:
    - Unplug all USB devices including iPod Touch
    - un-install iTunes
    - Re-install iTunes 7.4.3.1
    - Restart PC/MAC
    - Reset iPod Touch (hold down the sleep button until red slider)
    - Restart PC/MAC
    - Plug in iPod Touch
iTunes should recognise the device. If not there's something else you can do:
    - Unplug all USB devices including iPod Touch
    - un-install iTunes
    - un-install Apple mobile device driver
    - Re-install iTunes 7.4.3.1
    - Restart PC/MAC
    - Reset iPod Touch (hold down the sleep button until red slider)
    - Restart PC/MAC
    - Plug in iPod Touch
If that desn't work, take it to an Apple store, to evoke your worldwide 1 year warrenty.
    Hope this helps/helped.

  • IPod touch restore error 1604

My iPod touch has been working well for some weeks. When I tried to connect it to my PowerBook yesterday it downloaded a new version of iTunes. Since then it is in restore mode and has an "unknown error 1604". This continues after re-installing iTunes on my Powerbook. Who can help?

Thanks, but I don't do windows.
What I have done is delete the file iPod1,11.1.2_3B48bRestore.ipsw from ~/Library/iTunes/Software Update/ and reload it (3 times now - I am persistent).
I also recovered two different versions of iPod1,11.1.1_3A110aRestore.ipsw, but it unpacks to a folder, and I can not get it to change Kind into "iPod Software Update File".
Note I have been doing this on a older Power PC machine running 10.4.11 (I have a lot of expensive legacy software in Classic). Next step is to try this with a newer Mac G4 dual core.
    Anyone have any other ideas?

  • Error 1604 restoring iPod touch

A few months ago, my iPod touch started having some minor issues. It would randomly stop playing and sometimes wouldn't recognize when it was plugged in and wouldn't charge. I restored it and the problem was solved. Recently it started doing it again, but this time it won't restore. It gives me a "Preparing iPod for Restore" message for several minutes, and then gives me an error 1604. I've tried restoring on two different computers with the same results. It was previously usable, but now its stuck in restore mode. Any ideas?

Here's some ideas from the Apple support pages:

  • Can not restore iPod touch -error #1604

    So here is the situation:
I have a 32GB iPod 2G and two days ago I tried to upgrade the software to 3.1 and because the backup was taking so long I let it run overnight. Yesterday morning I noticed an error showing (can't remember what it said exactly) saying the update failed.
Ever since my iPod is only telling me to connect it to iTunes which is telling me that I have to restore my iPod but trying so always fails and iTunes tels me that error #1604 occured (all the time!!)
I already tried every last advice I found here http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1275 including using a different PC ,other cables / ports etc.
I would be grateful for any help

I had this exact same problem. I was able to solve it by connecting to one of the USB ports on my Mac instead of using the powered USB hub that I had been using. I notice you say you've tried different ports, have you tried on of the ports directly on your Mac (or PC)?

    2009-06-17 23:09:24.048 iTunes.exe[4452:968]: iTunes: Restore error 1603

  • Ahhh error 1604 on my ipod! cant restore!

so one day my ipod touch froze up so i turned it off and back on and the apple logo wouldn't go away. then the little white spinning thing showed up and it spins for a while and then turns off and restarts the process. when i plug it in to itunes it isnt recognized unless i put in in recovery mode, which i have. i download the new software or whatever and then try to restore and all it says is unable to restore error 1604. ive tried practically everything. nothing works. i really dont want to have to buy a new ipod but i dont know what to do HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

People who have still not solved error 1604 and had a bricked iPhone no matter what they tried, might manage to revive it by following these instructions (on how to downgrade from 2.0 to 1.1.4).
    You will need the following:
    - iTunes 7.5 (NOT 7.7)
    - iPhone firmware iPhone1,11.1.4_4A102Restore.ipsw
    Step 1:
Uninstall iTunes 7.7 completely if you have it and restart your computer.
    Step 2:
    Install iTunes 7.5
    Step 3:
Your iPhone should be in 2 states, either stuck on the "Slide to make emergency calls" screen, or you tried to restore before and it's stuck on the new look "connect to iTunes" screen. Either way you're ok.
Enter the phone in DFU mode (You must have the iPhone connected to the computer and iTunes running). To do this, hold the power & the home button down for about 9 seconds.
Why 9s? Well people say 10s, but it depends how slow you are at counting. Too short and it doesn't work, too long and the apple logo appears.
When you hit about 6-7s the screen should turn off, leave it for 2 more seconds and release the power button, STILL holding the home button. If all went well, you should NOT see an apple logo, the screen should be dead.
Keep holding home until windows/Mac informs you that it's found new hardware, OR iTunes tells you that your iPhone is in recovery mode. Remember, screen should be blank.
If you see an apple logo, repeat the process for less time until you get it right. Took me a little time.
    Step 4:
Shift/Option click the restore button in iTunes and select the iPhone1,1_1.1.4 firmware you downloaded.
Fingers crossed it should restore back to 1.1.4.

  • I wanted to sync my ipod to my itunes but it went all black and then they say it is in recuperation mode ? then error 1604 appears and i tried everything and still not working what can i do ?

and now i can't use my ipod because there's this picture of itunes like i should connect it ...

If still problem, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

  • Can not update error 1602 and can not restore error 1604 what is the solution

Have a IPod touch 4, can't update (error 1602) and can't restore (error 1604) any solution?

    try this support article.

  • Stuck in "restore" after going from error 13019, to error 3194 to error 1604....now what?

I'd be really grateful if someone could help me.
I am very new to apple products and bought my ipod only in July this year. I didn't realise you had to keep updating them etc.. but anyway.
My internet connection is extremely slow and unreliable (about 5 kb per second - kb, NOT MB!). I managed to download the iOS 5 update (iPod4,1.5.0_9A334_Restore - is that the right one?) onto an external hard drive when I was somewhere else. Someone in these dicussions showed me how to update it from there by using shift while pressing update.
Anyway, first I had Error 13019, someone helped me to get past that. At the next stage I got Error 3194. Someone showed me how to get round that.......then when all seemed to be going fine, I got Error 1604. Apparently it's the cables that might cause a problem but my cables etc. passed the device diagnostics with flying colours right before I began. When I run diagnostics now, the iTunes says there is no Ipod plugged in - but it is!!
My Ipod is now in recovery mode, and I have the following screen shots. (see below). On the one hand it seems like all is fine, it says my software is up to date...but there again it says it has detected my ipod in recovery mode and needs to restore/update.....this is all driving me mad - I only wanted to listen to my music and read e-mails when in a wi-fi cafe! Now it really feels like this is more hassle than it's worth....
I tried disconnecting the Ipod and pressing the home button and the on/off switch, but it just comes back on in restore mode.........sometimes the apple logo appears for a few seconds, then it goes back to the restore picture of the USB cable, and arrow and an iTunes logo above it.
Can anyone help me restore my ipod to functionality as well as my faith in this product?
    many thanks, Nick
