Error Installing iPod software and iTunes

I was trying to install my iPod drivers and iTunes but i get an error message and i can't install both...
"String PRODUCT_NAME was not found in string table."
"Error Number: 0x80040706
Description: Object reference not set
Setup will now Terminate."

hmmmm. are you trying to install an itunes version 6.0.x or earlier? that message is associated with the older installer technology used with iTunes prior to itunes 7.
if so, the following InstallShield document is a good place to start:

  • Problems installing iPod software with iTunes

I get the message "The software for this ipod is not installed correctly. Please reinstall iTunes to install the required software." I have reinstalled iTunes and still get this message.  I have the latest version of iTunes installed (11.1.4.62) running on Windows 7.  Any suggestions?Problems

    Hi welcome to Apple Discussions!
Yes, I do know what could be the issue. Your computer may be confusing your iPod with a different drive (thus not recognized or keeps repeatedly asking to name iPod).
In this case the thing to do is try assigning your iPod a different drive letter. in "Control Panel".
Go to "START -> Control Panel".
Click on "Administrative Tools" (if you can't see it, switch to the "classic view" in the left panel).
Go to "Computer Management", then "Disk Management" button in the left area.
Right-click on your iPod there, and click on "Change Drive Letter and Paths...". Change the letter to something like "M" or "N" (further along in the alphabet).
It should look like this picture:
For more details, see this articke , which basically says and explains the same thing:
Assigning your iPod a different drive letter
I hope this solves your issue

  • Error installing iPod software onto computer.

I get this error when running the iPod setup file from the CD:
"1607: Unable to install InstallShield Scripting Runtime."
Right after choosing the language, it starts to install, then stalls for a few seconds and displays that error.
I'm running the newest version of Windows XP on a computer that meets all of the system requirements. Windows is recognizing the iPod through the USB as well. Also, I popped the CD into another computer running windows XP and it works completely fine.
Any suggestions here guys? Any help would be appreciated since I've got this shiny new iPod sitting on my desk with no music on it until I can get this figured out. =\
    Thanks.

Awesome man, that site was helpful and I never would have thought to check there.
Turns out I had to reinstall Windows Installer, despite InstallShield working for everything throughout the past two years. But it fixed the problem!
Thanks for your help! I really appreciate it.

  • Installing ipod software disables cd drive

    Hi all,
I've recently bought an ipod shuffle and installed everything onto my hp Pavilion zv5000 laptop. Installing the ipod software and itunes / quickplayer all works fine, and i can run and use my ipod, BUT once i have done this, my cd/dvd RW drive is no longer recognised by my computer. I can't use cds or dvds in any form in any application on my computer, not just in itunes. I have tried installing the ipod software from the cd, and from downloading it, but the same happens both ways. The only way to get the cd drive working again is to do a system restore to before installing the ipod, which of course means i can't use my ipod. Any ideas?

okay, if it's giving you a code 41 like that, try the techniques from this post:
b noir: Upgrade to V6 and I loose the ability to see Drives
(since i made that post, the GEAR drivers page has changed a bit. so if you end up having to reinstall those, use the standard 32-bit driver rather than the legacy one, unless you've got Norton Ghost.)

Preparing your iPhone for restore its supposed to be about 1-2 minutes! Do you see any errors the time you plug in the wire from your iPhone to iTunes?

I recently upgraded my Itunes softeware, now itunes will not recognize my IPod Classic. If I delete the current IPod software and reinstall it, would this solve the problem, and if so, I'll need step by step instruction.

    Yep.

It appears that SANmp is indeed the most likely source of your problem.

I cannot access iTunes store from my laptop. I could for years but suddenly - no.
Have removed all recently installed software. Have uninstalled and re-installed both my anti-virus software and iTunes.
    Have allowed pop-ups.
    Have flushed the DNS. Nothing.
Still can't access the store. Please help!

    Close your iTunes,
    Go to command Prompt -
(Win 7/Vista) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES, right mouse click "Command Prompt", choose "Run as Administrator".
    (Win XP SP2 n above) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES/Command Prompt
In the "Command Prompt" screen, type in
    netsh winsock reset
    Hit "ENTER" key
    Restart your computer.
If you do get a prompt after restart windows to remap LSP, just click NO.
Now launch your iTunes and see if it is working now.
If you are still having these type of problems after trying the winsock reset, refer to this article to identify which software in your system is inserting LSP:

  • ...please uninstall the ipod software and try again...

I cannot get itunes 7 to install. Everytime, I get:
This installation cannot directly upgrade the version of ipod software found on this computer. Please unistall the ipod software and try again.
I have, to the best of my knowledge, removed every bit of ipod software, files, folders on my computer. I uninstalled itunes and tried to download and got the same error.
I then reinstalled the ipod software I had from '05 and itunes 4.9 automatically installed. Finally, in re-uninstalled EVERYTHING and tried again and got the same error message.

I cannot get itunes 7 to install. Everytime, I get:
This installation cannot directly upgrade the version of ipod software found on this computer. Please unistall the ipod software and try again.
it's plausible that there is still skunky ipod software installation configuration information on the PC.
download and install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. use it to remove the installation configuration of any entries (in the Windows CleanUp list) called "ipod for windows [date]" or "ipod updater [date]".
Description of the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility
does an itunes install go through properly after that?

  • Problem Updating iPod software on iTunes

I am having problems updating my iPod software through iTunes. As soon as it gets to the end of the download, an error message comes up (-48, I think) that states there was an error in downloading the update. It suggests to check my internet connection or try again later. It happens everytime. I have a very stable internet connection and my iTunes software is version 7.1.1.5
    Please help me! Thank you.

  • 'There were errors installing the software. Please try installing again.'

Can anyone provide a solution for a sudden problem I've encountered. It began when trying to install Backup 3.1 and has now been repeated with OS X 10.4.5.
When trying through Software Update I'm told The update [packagename] can't be installed. Sorry, an unexpected error occurred. The Installer package has been moved to the Trash. To try again, open the package from the Finder.
When I try opening the Installer packages from the Finder the Installer reaches the stage of 'preparing target volume' and then displays this error: There were errors installing the software. Please try installing again.
Installer's Error Log says: Install failed: The following install step failed: run preflight script for [packagename].
    Console.log contains this:2006-02-15 21:07:27.431 Software Update[331] session:product:061-2046 didFailWithError:NSError "Error SUSessionErrorDomain 6" Domain=SUSessionErrorDomain Code=6 UserInfo={errorCode = -2; }
Unsuccessful steps I've taken to resolve this issue have been: (1) I trashed com.apple.installer.plist, (2) I repaired disk persmissions; (3) I repaired the disk (when I did so, Disk Utility reported that no repairs were necessary); (4) I restarted in Safe Mode; and (5) I tried installing using a different User account.
    Anyone?

Since first posting, I learned of further updates being available in Software Update (all the iLife '06 suite, basically). Horrified, I suspected that my Installer problem would rear its ugly head again with these, and sure enough that's precisely what happened. As a test, I unchecked all but one of the new items in Software Update and tried installing that. The exact same problem reoccurred.
Fortunately I also have an iBook G4 on which I had earlier run a successful upgrade to OS X 10.4.5. I ran Software Update on that machine, installed everything successfully, and then used Target Disk mode between iBook and iMac to first install 10.4.5 on the iMac and then to copy over the new versions of Backup, iDVD, iMovie, iPhoto, iTunes and iWeb. So my iMac is now up to date, but only by intervention of another machine. My original question remains: what could be causing the problem with Installer?
Thanks Jpfresno for your response. The only part of it which I had not tried was disconnecting my external Firewire HD before running Installer.

  • Can't burn blank CD after installing ipod software

Can't burn blank CD after installing ipod software - I have the system prefs set to launch Toast 6 when inserting a blank disk, and the drive just churns and then ejects the CD. It mounts and runs burned music and data disks with no problem.
My job requires me to burn data disks from pictures I take at work. Should I re-install Toast? The OS? I ran Disk Utility to check/fix permissions, and no change.

The CD that came with the nano won't have anything on it that you won't get with a full iTunes install. In fact, it may have been an OLDER version of the iTunes software than what you had installed before.
I'd reccomend downloading the latest version of iTunes from Apple and installing that to rule out software reversion issues.
If the problem still exists, try booting into toast before inserting the blank disk and see if Toast can still burn to the CD. If it can, then odds are you have to re-instruct your computer to boot toast when a blank CD is inserted. If it can't see the blank CD, or the Finder spits it out again, then I think you'd have to re-install Toast.
