Error installing Lion

The Problem:
Every time I try to install my iMac booting form a Mac OS X Installer DVD gives me an error: Is not possible to install on this disc. Try to reinstall.
And now I can't install anything on it.
The facts:
I wanted to make a clean install of Lion, so I burned a DVD with the DMG inside Lion installer from the AppStore. When I ran the installer the process started and some download begins, the installer asked me to restart, and after restart the DVD started to install over Snow Leopard. But at some point during the process I killed the installer (I just quit) because it didn't ask what kind of install I wanted... so... I quit the installer, restart the iMac, format my HD to perform the clean install as usual, and tried again to install from the DVD. Now, the process start… then says "Installing" (progress bar)… and then gives me an error. I can't do anything now... I tried with my iMac's original installation DVD (MacOSX 10.6) and happens the same. I think the problem was to quit the installer, but I also think that if the menu bar was available the installer could handle it.
I'm a Mac user for years and this is the first time something like this happens to me. I'm thinking about trying to use Firewire and try to install it on target mode from my Macbook Pro. The HD seems OK, so is not a hardware problem.
Does anybody know how to solve this problem?
Thanks in advance!

For the record... I just restarted my iMac in target mode using a 800 Firewire cable from my MacBook Pro and I was able to install Lion without problems. Just as simple as that.
Anyway, the problem still seems very weird to me.

Everytime I restart I gor the same message. Now I am trying to start from the harddisk but I does not show when you start the pc, keep clicking the "alt" botton. It only shows "Mac OS X Installer" and "Recovery HD". What Should I do?

  • My Epson 7900  gives me an error message now that I have installed Lion.

As soon as I install lion my epson printer 7900 refused to work. All i get is an error message now. I know this is a new o/s but you would have thought it would have worked with a popular printer like this. Anyone got any ideas. I ve already checked on the epson site for a new driver but they dont semmed to have one. I am quite desperate to get my work out as I am a photographer and have clients waiting for their pictures. Any help would be appreciated.

Which Epson printer?  The Epson LP-7900 is support with a driver avaiable from Apples SU server:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3669
The SP7900 is a speciality printer.  You will need to download the latest driver from Epson.  Their latest 10.6 driver should work.

  • Trouble installing Lion due to partition error

    Hi everyone,
So I don't know a whole lot about computers, and I have had my macbook for a couple years now and decided to install Lion last night. After I downloaded it, I got an error message saying that it could not be installed and I needed to change my HD's partitioning to GUID. The internal HD I have in my mac now I installed myself, and I must have accidentally clicked apple partition map instead of GUID when I installed it, which didn't cause a problem until now (my macbook has an intel processor). So i backed up everything on my HD to an external HD using carbon copy, hoping that I would just be able to reformat/partition my internal HD correctly and move everything back onto it from my external drive. I booted my computer using the external drive, and tried to repartition using disk utility, but I keep getting a partition error message that tells me the disk cannot be unmounted. I got the same message when I tried just erasing the disk first. Anyone know how I can fix this?
    Thanks, and Happy Holidays!!

Try starting from your Snow Leopard Install disc.

Posting "Check the 'More like this'" area and not simply providing the answer is a great way to make these groups worthless.
You're ignoring context.  On the old Apple Discussion Groups I never posted replies like that, instead giving people relatively detailed answers.  The new Apple Support Communities made things worse by introducing certain inefficiencies.  Then came Lion.  The flood of messages that came with Lion required a painful choice for any of the people who had been helping here: (1) Give quality responses to a few questions and ignore the rest.  (2) When applicable, give a brief answer such as the one that you found objectionable.  (3) Give up all the other normal activities of life and spend full time trying to answer questions here.
People who needed help with Lion problems seemed to have trouble discovering existing message threads that described how to solve their problems.  I never posted the suggestion of "Check the 'More like this' area" without verifying that the help that the poster needed could be found there.  Even doing that, what I posted saved me time that I could use to help someone else.
The people helping here are all volunteers.  None of them is being paid for the time they spend here.  They all have a life outside of Apple Support Communities.  It's arrogant of you to demand that people helping here spend more time than they already do.

  • Error when installing Lion on empy HD: "Couldn't find app store version, falling back to hardcoded"

I've run in to a problem that is making me tear the hair from my head. I'm hoping for your help!
    Short story:
I'm trying to install OS X Lion on my 27" iMac.
I've erased the HD using Disc Tool in recovery.
    HD shows no errors.
I've tried Internet Recovery (it loads up, but wont start the installation)
I've tried creating a recovery usb on another similar iMac, and use it on this. Same error, only differance is it keeps "loading" when installing, but nothing happens. Same error in log.
When I try to start the Reinstall I get an error in the installation log that goes something like this:
Install Mac OS X Lion[354:9c03] Couldn't find app store version, falling back to hardcoded
Can not connect to /var/run/systemkeychaincheck.socket: No such file or directory
    Apple Care suggested:
    Trying another network (doesn't work).
Install with the original Snow Leopard DVD first, then upgrade (can't do that, the DVD is lost and a DVD from another friend is not working)
What can I do to get around this error?
Someone suggested buying a usb with Snow Leopard from the apple store. Do I really have to buy a NEW operating system because the recovery doesn't work? Would I have to pay to upgrade to Lion again?

Follow AppleCare's instructions on re-installing Snow Leopard and re-installing Lion. Your friends disc won't work because the discs are machine specific. You will have to get a replacement set of your original Install Discs from AppleCare for a nominal cost.

  • Tried to install  lion on Macbookpro and getting a smart error message?

Tried to install  lion on Macbookpro and getting a S.M.A.R.T error message, software up to date and enough free memory

Do you have the 10.6.8 (or whatever came with the machine) install DVDs?
If so you need to boot up with those and run Dusk Utility off the DVD. Check the S.M.A.R.T status at the bottom of the Disk Utility window when you have the MBP's disk selected. If the status doesn't say  Verified the disk is on its way out its already dead. It needs to be replaced.
If it says Verified then do a Disk Repair on the MBP's disk.  Note any  errors you get and rerun Disk Repair until you get no more errors. If that doesn't happen the disk needs to be replaced.
All this cos I bought an iPad and wanted to use iCloud!
The install hasn't caused this. The disk was going no matter what. Its a good thing that you did the install and caught the error or else you might have lost your whole system.

  • I get an error when I try to print after installing Lion - worked under Snow Leopard - /System/Library/Printers/Libraries/PrintJobMgr/Contents/MacOS/PrintJobMgr failed

I have not been able to print pictures nor any text since installing Lion.  I receive the message in the subject which is totally meaningless.

When you upgrade from a previous OS there is always a chance that you will bring some setting that is not compatible with the new OS. This can be the driver as noondaywitch suggests but it can also be the core printing system. In the case of the latter, it is a good idea to reset the printing system when a core error occurs. Note that the reset sets the printing system back to default and removes your currently installed printer and scanner queues. But it does not remove the supporting drivers, so you only need to install the driver again.
How to Reset the Printing System
    1. Open System Preferences > Print & Scan/Fax
    2. Move your mouse over the Printers list
    3. Hold down the Control button and click the mouse
    4. Click the "Reset printing system ..." popup
    5. Restart your Mac
Just one additional thing to note. In checking the supported printer list for 10.6 from Apple, your RC545 is not listed so running the Software Update will not provide you with a driver for this printer. So if Epson does not have a driver for 10.6, and it appears that Apple does not provide one, then what you have already from the previous installation is it. And if this doesn't work, then you may have to look at either an alternate driver or getting another printer. But let's wait and see what happens after the reset.

Run Disk Utility located in /Applications/Utilities before trying to upgrade to Lion in case the startup disk needs repairing.

  • Anyone getting this pop up error message after installing Lion?

After installing Lion I now get random pop up error messages that say...There was a problem connecting to the server. URL's with the type "file" are not supported. I have to keep closing them. Any ideas what to do?

Actually, In my case, turning off Time Machine didn't help. I had the same problem. We definitely traced it to Time Machine. The "Fix" was this: plugged in and designated different external HD as Backup volume. Then unplugged it and plugged in the original disc (after testing in in a different machine) and now the computer recognized it and error message stopped popping up. The Apple tech was as puzzled as I as to why this worked, but perhaps, forcing the machine to re-recognize it (or maybe even gettting it recognized by a different machine first) somehow worked some magic.

  • Unable to install Lion - S.M.A.R.T. errors on my hard drive???

Unable to install Lion on a 27 inch 3.06 Intel Core 2 Duo iMac running OS 10.6.8.  When I am presented with install options, my HD option is dimmed and there is a message: "This disk has S.M.A.R.T. errors.  This disk has a hardware problem that can't be repaired.  Back up as much of the data as possible and replace the disk."
I have not had ANY problems with this iMac since purchasing it and other than being unable to install Lion it seems to be working just fine, and yet now I'm told that my hard drive is unrepairable.
Is this a glitch in the Lion Installer or should I be more concerned?
Any info appreciated... now it seems I've paid $30 for a download I can't use.  Grrrrrr....

Check it via Disk Utility (in your Applications/Utilities folder) on Snow Leopard:
If that says there's a problem, too, there's likely a problem.
Be sure your backups are up-to-date, and let Apple have a look at it: http://www.apple.com/retail/geniusbar/

  • Error ocurring while preparing to install lion on snow leopard 10.6.8

    Hey,
I have an intel based iMac, duo core 3.06.
My snow leopard has always been unstable, starts up very slow, when i get to the blue screen it stays on there for about 15 minutes before i get to see the desktop.
I bought lion through the app store, downloaded it and tried installing. However i keep getting an error that occures while preparing to install.
I tried the PVR reset thingy, i tried loading the image on an external drive and then installing, i tried burning it on dvd then installing.
Even reinstalled leopard and did the previous steps, still nothing. Been a month of troubleshooting now and im really getting tired.
    Can anyone help?

Upgrading a misconfigured system is almost always going to make matters worse. I strongly suggest you start a new topic in the 10.6 discussion area to troubleshoot your problems, before you create any new ones. Once you have 10.6 running normally, you can install Lion.
