Error installing Mavericks on Macbook.
I have downloaded the Mavericks installer and prepared my Mac by removing TM backups, turning off TM and rebooting. I have a qualifying macbook running 10.6.8. When I try to activate the installer, I get a error saying that the drive is used for Time Machine backups. What can I do to fix this?
Try going to Time Machine Preferences > Select Disk, and remove that disk as the choice for the TM backup.
And BTW, doesn't that defeat the purpose to use the same drive that your startup disk is on for TM?

Hi all... this is my first time here, so please be gentle ;-)
Ever since I installed Mavericks, my MacBook Pro just randomly restarts. It's been happening a lot, and I have zero idea of how to decipher the panic report. Can anyone lend an assist on this? Much thanks, in advance. Here's the report...

Any third-party software that doesn't install by drag-and-drop into the Applications folder, and uninstall by drag-and-drop to the Trash, is a system modification.
Whenever you remove system modifications, they must be removed completely, and the only way to do that is to use the uninstallation tool, if any, provided by the developers, or to follow their instructions. If the software has been incompletely removed, you may have to re-download or even reinstall it in order to finish the job.
I never install system modifications myself, and (unless otherwise specified in this comment) I don't know how to uninstall them. You'll have to do your own research to find that information.
Here are some general guidelines to get you started. Suppose you want to remove something called “BrickMyMac” (a hypothetical example.) First, consult the product's Help menu, if there is one, for instructions. Finding none there, look on the developer's website, say www.brickmymac.com. (That may not be the actual name of the site; if necessary, search the Web for the product name.) If you don’t find anything on the website or in your search, contact the developer. While you're waiting for a response, download BrickMyMac.dmg and open it. There may be an application in there such as “Uninstall BrickMyMac.” If not, open “BrickMyMac.pkg” and look for an Uninstall button. The uninstaller might also be accessed by clicking the Customize button, if there is one.
Back up all data before making any changes.
You will generally have to restart the computer in order to complete an uninstallation. Until you do that, there may be no effect, or unpredictable effects.
If you can’t remove software in any other way, you’ll have to erase and install OS X. Never install any third-party software unless you're sure you know how to uninstall it; otherwise you may create problems that are very hard to solve.
WARNING: Trying to remove complex system modifications by hunting for files by name often will not work and may make the problem worse. The same goes for "utilities" such as "AppCleaner" and the like that purport to remove software. -
Installed Mavericks on MacBook Pro. Now my Contacts has no records. Contacts on my iPad are OK. How can I repopulate my MacBook Contents file from my iPad?.

Commercial software utility for transferring songs from i-device to Mac - http://www.fadingred.com/senuti/
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1848 - just media purchased from iTunes Store
You'll need to get it all onto one iTunes collection on your Mac Pro, then sync the devices to that. iTunes only lets you transfer purchases from a device, otherwise you have to use third party software.
I guess you could also look into getting iTunes Match. -
After installing Mavericks my MacBook Pro and my MacMini can't shut down, only a grey screen and finish. Must be killed by the power button. Why?
Ausserdem startet die Macs wesentlich langsamer als mit OS X 10.6.8.same here... sometimes it works, most of the time it doesn't!!

Error message when trying to install Mavericks onto macbook pro.
Hi Been trying to install Mavericks onto my macbook pro (10.6.8) but the install fails after 3-5 minutes and I get this error message: *** WARNING: -[NSImage compositeToPoint:fromRect:operation:] is deprecated in MacOSX 10.8 and later. Please use -[NSImage drawAtPoint:fromRect:operation:fraction:] instead.
I have tried to repair the drive through the utility function but I am told it cannot be repaired. I tried the recovery function as well but whilst I am able to select the source (external hard drive with recent time machine backup) the next screen prompts me to select the disk to restore but all it does is search for a drive and there is none there to select.
Really not sure what else to do. Please help!Well some progress has been made so thought i would post what I did, in case someone experiences the same issue I did and maybe this will be of use to someone else...
Ended up force-shutting my macbook down then switching back on, as soon as the chime could be heard i pressed command R and kept both keys pressed until Recovery mode kicked in.
Internet Recovery came on which took approx 20 minutes (more about this here http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4718 )
Then 4 options appeared
1) recover with time machine back up
2) set up and install Mac OSX (with the Lion icon and reference to Lion for some reason, I had Snow Leopard to begin with)
3) get help online
4) repair or erase disk using disk utility
I decided to attempt to repair the drive but use the verification tool first which said the drive was fine??????!!!
Then clicked on repair disk, this took only a few minutes then it stopped after a couple lines.
While it was "repairing" the button changed to "stop repair" then changed back to "repair" so I took that to mean it had done what had to be done.
Then closed the utility screen whch prompted me to restart macbook after selected a drive to boot up from (only one option came up for me)
Did that and I was back into familiar territory and on my mac as I knew it ie snow leopard.
I did restart macbook just to make sure and it just booted up as normal, to snow leopard with the maverick install icon still showing in the dock.
Panic over. Not sure if / when I will give installing Maverick another try though.... -

Installed Maverick, now Macbook Pro will not boot in normal or safe mode. UPSET!
Hello to anyone who can be of help to me. I have been without my 2008 Macbook Pro for months due to installing Maverick. After installing it, within a day or two, it crashed and now will not reboot in normal mode or sade mode. I've never had any problems from this computer until now.
I don't know much about Macs and I can't fix this. I also live over an hour away from any Apple store. I feel this is Apple's fault and I am pretty upset that this has happened to my laptop.
I understand this to be a Kernal Panic or something like that, which happens after installing a program, like Maverick. I have tried erasing the PRAM and still won't reboot in either mode. I would greatly appreciate any help I can get! Thanks! I love Apple. I am not bashing them, I just don't appreciate their software messing up my lappy.Have you tired a SMC reset?

As you might have guessed the issue seems to be the permissions related. Can you please check if the user account of the machine have all the permissions to access the contents within the DVD? Since you said that the DVD is working fine on other machine so that proves that issue is not with the DVD. Can you try to repair the permissions on the machine?

How to install Mavericks on Macbook Air
Hi,
I bought a second hand Macbook Air:
Processor 1.8 GHz Intel Core i5,
Memory 4 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Now I have problems installing OS X Mavericks on the computer. It just doesn't download.
What is the problem? You apparently have filled your boot disk to a point where the remaining space is below Mavericks installation requirements. It is implying that you need to review your login directory for very large files, or folders.
Open a new Finder window. In the left nav, select your short login name. Then change the View to list view. If the Size column arrow is pointing up, click it to down and your folders and files will be listed in descending storage use. The folders with an engraved emblem on them were created by the operating system, so do not remove them. Also, resist removing Apple applications found in /Applications.
Top candidates would be huge iTunes Music or applications content, iPhoto, or video collections. Whatever is taking up your storage will stand out. Generally, you should stay out of your Library folder. -
Error installing Mavericks - try the application again?
Hi all,
I have finally managed to download Mavericks through a fairly slow connection. The Install Application opens perfectly and runs you through the steps to install the program right up until it is trying to restart the machine. At this point I get an error message saying there was an error with installing the program and I should try launch the application again.
I've done this 6 times already and even tried installing on the other half of the partition without any joy.
Any ideas as to why? I would rather not have to re-download the program as its taken me ages already due to my slow connection right now!
Hope to win soon! Thanks all.Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Select
/var/log ▹ install.log
from the hierarchical list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar. Then select the messages from the last installation or update attempt, starting from the time when you initiated it. If you're not sure when that was, start over and note the time. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out by search-and-replace in a text editor before posting. -
Problems installing Mavericks on Macbook Air 2015
I have created a bootable installer for Mavericks but I cannot get a new Macbook Air early 2015 to install. I have tried three different brands of USB drives and also tried with SD card. They work on a MBP I have but not on two different Macbook Air's I just purchased. I hold down alt (Option) and turn the machine on, it sees the USB but when you click on it to boot I just get a no symbol (circle with slash) and the computer turns off. I have tried erasing the hard drive, same result. I have created the USB installer on the MBA and on another MBP still same result. Any ideas?
The computer either requires Yosemite or a specialized version of Mavericks. If the new MBAs came with Yosemite installed, then you cannot install an earlier version of OS X.
-
I know the external hard drive is working and the USB port works also.
I have seen lots of complicated answers on here but nothing I can understand.
Any help appriciated.
LesleyThe WD hard drive itself is probably fine, the enclosure has likely failed. WD externals are notorius for cheap enclosures failing. Try a different cable first. You can take the drive out and install it in a better enclosure, like one from OWC.

Early 2011 MacBook Pro incredibly slow after installing Mavericks
I'm really hoping someone can help me out. As per the subject line, I installed Mavericks on day one (and learned my lesson!).
Since installing Mavericks my MacBook Pro runs incredibly slow. If I open the Mail App and Safari - it almost grinds to a halt. I have the "Memory Clean" App which I now have to run constantly (it appears to help a little) and I try to only launch one app at a time where possible, but it's not really pratical.
As an aside, my MacBook ran really well with Mountain Lion, so there's little doubt to my mind that Mavericks is the culprit.
I'd be eternally grateful for any help & advice :-)
I spotted other people advise running EtreCheck, here are my results:

CleanMyMac is crapware.
Crapware is anything that purports to "optimize", "clean", "accelerate", "monitor", or "protect" your Mac. These apps are unnecessary, poorly written, overpriced (if they were free, they'd still be overpriced), and harmful. The people who sell this stuff know this, but they keep selling it because people keep buying it. They can damage your OS and be difficult to uninstall.
I would try to uninstall it, but if that fails, you may have to erase your HD and do a clean install. -
Has anyone else had issues with their Mac running slowly after installing Mavericks?
Ever since I installed Mavericks, my MacBook is running waaaaay slower. One of my favorite things about Macs has always been how fast they boot up, but ever since Mavericks, mine takes forever. A lot of programs like GarageBand and Premiere Pro are also running really slowly. They used to work great. Anyone else having this same issue?
The first thing to do is ensure you have adequate backups, because what you describe can be a symptom of impending disk failure.
To help determine the possible causes of this behaviour read the following. None of what follows is intended to fix anything, but it will provide the additional information required to advance troubleshooting. There are four separate parts to it; read everything first.
Boot OS X Recovery by holding ⌘ and r (two fingers) while you start your Mac. At the Mac OS X Utilities screen, select Disk Utility. Select your startup volume (usually named "Macintosh HD") and click the Repair Disk button. Describe any errors it reports in red. If Disk Utility reports "The volume Macintosh HD appears to be OK" in green then you can be reasonably (though not completely) assured your hard disk is in good working order.
When it finishes restart your Mac and test again for operation. If it's still not behaving as you expect it should, please post the results of EtreCheck in accordance with the following instructions:
Apple Support Communities contributor etresoft wrote a very useful app to quickly gather certain system information that may help point to a cause of this problem. Read about it here. It contains a link to download EtreCheck. Don't download it from anywhere else (such as may be found by following the results of an Internet search).
Click Open - etresoft contributes to this forum frequently and can be considered a trustworthy developer.
It will take a moment to run as it collects its data.
Copy and paste its output in a reply.
Do not be concerned about anything that says "Problem" or “failed” or anything else that may appear in red.
EtreCheck was designed to remove any personal information (such as your computer's name and serial numbers) but if you see anything that looks like an email address or any other personal information that should not be divulged to others, please delete or obscure that information when you post the reply.
When you are finished with EtreCheck, quit the program. It occupies very little space, and you can keep it or drag it to the Trash as you wish.
After completing the above please determine if the problems also occur in "Safe Mode":
Safe Mode or "Safe Boot" is a troubleshooting mode that bypasses all third party system extensions and loads only required system components. Read about it: Starting up in Safe Mode
You must disable FileVault before you can start your Mac in Safe Mode.
Starting your Mac in Safe Mode will take longer than usual, graphics will not render smoothly, audio is disabled on some Macs, and some programs (iTunes for example) may not work at all.
Merely starting your Mac in Safe Mode is not intended to resolve the problem, it's to observe its performance without certain additional components.
To end Safe Mode restart your Mac normally. Shutdown will take longer as well.
System performance problems for reasons that cannot be isolated to any other cause justify an SMC reset. Be sure to read the procedure carefully and follow all the steps exactly as written, even if they seem inapplicable or trivial.
