Error installing OS then 4MEM/4/40000000:  , does it mean bad RAM only ?

Long story short , while installing OS 10.4.10 combo update I got this message "there were errors installing your software , please restart your computer " , started up but would not get passed the login bar /blue screen , after numerous tries I started up from my cloned system , repaired permissions , verified disk (found problems and fixed them) , also booted up from original install DVD and checked the startup disk , showed all ok , still no luck , ran Techtool deluxe tests , everything passed , still no go, after various other atempts ( zapping PRam , starting in single user mode typing "reboot' etc.. ) without success I went for an archive and install from the original DVD , the installer stopped in the middle (there were errors installing...please restart) , same thing after writting zeroes to the disk and attempting a clean install , last I ran the Apple hardvare test which showed:" 4MEM/4/40000000: " (just that , no error code after 4MEM/4/40000000: ) , does it mean a RAM problem exclusively or could it be something else hardware related ? (I did tests using only one RAM chip at a time early on , did not seem to help) , I'd like to rule out the RAM before going to Apple (2GB third party RAM ).
Any help appreciated.

You'll have to ask an Apple Authorized Service Provider exactly what that error means, but it would seem to indicate a RAM problem. You could have a problem with the RAM slots themselves, not necessarily the RAM chips. But, chances are it's the RAM chips if everything was running before. It's possible that the software update revealed a problem that was not detected before. If you get the error with the Apple RAM, I would call AppleCare Support. If you get the error with your third party vendor, I would call them.
