Error installing Quicktime: Lots of interesting problems

Hookay, I got a problem, see? It all started when I tried opening iTunes, but it would try and fail. I tried uninstalling, then reinstalling. Upon trying to reinstall, an error message came up saying that it needed Quicktime to install, so, I started troubleshooting Quicktime.
Tried uninstalling and reinstalling, went fine this first time. When I tried opening Quicktime to do a run test, it gave me the "Buffer C++ \ shutdown" message. So, I tried to uninstall that version. No go.
I then used the online guide to erase all mention of QT from my HD, by going into Windows\system32, using the regedit tool, using Windows Install Clean Up, and manually deleting QT from Program Files. Using the "Add or Remove Programs" function would not work, and quicktime eventually stopped showing up there. The included "uninstall" function in Start-programs didn't work. In between each of the above fixes, I would try to install the latest version. To each, I would get an error saying "There is a more current version of Quicktime installed." type of message, then the program would quit.
After going through all the above methods, I decided to run a "Find" on my C: and deleted every mention of QT. The only remaining thing is a file in C:\Windows\Cache\Adobe Reader 6.0\ENUBIG\Data1.cab that I can't delete, only copy or extract. I figured that I could now install a current copy without any ghosts to foul me up. No dice. Now, when I try to install the current version, I get an error saying "The older version of Quicktime cannot be removed. Contact your technical support group." So, here I am.
Status of QT: FUBAR
Shows up on "Add or Remove Programs" - No
Shows up on Start-Programs - No
Deleted from Windows\System32 - Yes
Deleted from C:\Programs - Yes
Deleted from everywhere else - Yes, as far as I can tell
CPU specs: HP540J
OS: Win XP SP2, Home Edition, Version 2002
Pentium 4, 3.2 ghz
Ram: 1g

Try launching your Windows Installer CleanUp again.
Are there any myssterious "blank" entries or entries containg nothing but a version number showing up in the list of entries in CleanUp?
(If there's a version number on the otherwise blank line, what is it?)

  • Error Installing Quicktime

I had quicktime on my computer, then I had to use it one time, so I tried opening it, but nothing happened, as though I didn't click it. So I completely uninstalled it and tried reinstalling iTunes+Quicktime but I get, right at the end of installing Quicktime, QuickTime installation failed: Error Code: -1
And then it promptly closes. I also cannot use my iTunes since I don't have quicktime installed.

    hi Elpram!
i don't much like the sound of the "error-less" launch failure that you got with Quicktime initially. what we're going to do is first try to treat the -1. our initial objective is to get itunes and quicktime to the stage (at least) that they fail to launch, but don't give you an error message. once we've got things to that stage, we'll start addressing the error-less launch failures.
the -1 (like the -3) indicates an underlying problem with the QT component of the itunes installer bundle. so first we're going to try a "semi-diagnostic" careful standalone QT install. (even if you get an error message on this install, the additional information will be helpful when it comes to trying to address the underlying problem.)
download and save a copy of the standalone QT 7.0.3 installer to your hard-drive. (we'll run the install from there rather than on line.) switch off any antivirus and antispyware applications prior to the install.
    Quicktime 7.0.3 Standalone Installer
if you get an error message during that install, let us know what it says. (include error message numbers if you're getting any.)
if the install goes through, let us know if (at least) you've gotten things to the stage where itunes and quicktime don't give you an error message when you try to launch them.

  • Error installing Quicktime (Code: -3)

Any and every time I try to reinstall Quicktime/iTunes I receive an error pop-up during installation (Quicktime installation failed: Error Code: -3).
I never had these issues until I upgraded iTunes from 4.9 to 5, and uninstallation and restalling has done nothing.

After trying just about everything imaginable to update and install Quicktime I was directed to the Windows Installer Clean Up Utility from Microsoft. I downloaded it and ran it and within a minute everything worked great again.

  • ITunes Download Error 2738: Error Installing QuickTime

to anyone who may read this: i just recently purchased an ipod touch and am trying to sync it with my computer, but it says im using an out of date edition of itunes (currently using v7.6 but says that i need at least v7.4). each time i try to install the updated version, it comes up with an error message saying that quicktime could not install, there was a problem with the package, and the installer automatically quit the installation process...PLEASE HELP! ive tried contacting apple support personnel but none of their advice has helped.

Assuming here that you're using a 32-bit version of Vista ... have you tried the vista instructions from the following document?

  • Itunes 7 fails to install - QuickTime problem.

I successfully used an earlier Itunes with an Ipod 1GB Nano. My new 2GB Nano (courtesy of Netgear promotion!) demanded V7 which I downloaded and tried to install. There were many errors installing Quicktime, but one was
    "Could not open key HKEYLOCALMACHINES\software\classes\QuickTimePlayerLib.QuicktimePlayerApp\CLSID"
Verify that you have sufficient access to that key, or contact your support personnel"
I accessed myself (8-)# I tried running regedit, but that key and all the other "QuickTime" "software/classes/" keys gave the same error. I tried right clicking to set permissions, but although the list comes up, I cannot enable any of them.
I even tried safe mode, but all those entries are give similar errors. I have now deleted all references to "QuickTime" in the registry except the inaccessible ones, and the "Program Files" directory, but installation gives the same errors.
The result is that Itunes will not install, and I am unable to use my new Ipod.
A Google search finds no-one with similar problems.
    Any ideas?

I am answering this blind as I did not realise I would not have access to the previous posting! Thanks for responding.
There is no version number of the installer under properties, but it says "V7" when run, and was downloaded earlier today (38,808,256 bytes) from the Apple site (as linked to by my then presumably working Itunes).
I see exactly my problem is in http://forums.vnunet.com/thread.jspa?threadID=93546&tstart=0
    and unresolved.
I rolled back Windows to yesterday (and then the day before), and now find I cannot even uninstall either Quicktime or Itunes. The "Add or Remove programs" utility starts its progress bar and then quits with no report. I tried a re-install of the only previous installation of Itunes and it reported "You have a later version of Itunes installed" (meaning presumably V7) The Itunes I have on disk will not run "Files missing". This I suppose must be due to the failed installation of V7, which System Restore has failed to undo.
I tried then the V7 install again, and got:
"QuickTime failed to install Error #-2903"
    and later
    "Error 1905 c:\Program Files\Quicktime\QTOControl.dll
    Hresult -2147220472"
... and then followed by three or four registry errors in HKEYLOCALMACHINES\SOFTWARE\Classes\ including the one I started this thread with. All these registry items are inaccesible under regedit ("Error opening key").
I am now in a position that I cannot go back or forward and still cannot link my IPOD to Itunes.
Is Itunes the only program that can transfer music?
It seems that one cannot simply copy, as firstly there is no "music" folder, and when it is done in a kosher way, the filenames are changed to an internal format, with the real names in a database.
It looks like Apple are managing to stop loads of other people using their new IPODs. I would ask for my money back if it wasn't a gift from Netgear (8-)#

  • Error with quicktime when installing itunes 6.0

hi, i've tried reinstall the new itunes many times but whenever it reaches the end of the installation, it says that there's an error installing quicktime (it says quicktime installation failed: error code: -3) and when i try to access itunes it says that it has performed an error and is closed.
i've tried http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93865 and the same problem still persists
    anyone knows what to do?

    http://www.techzonez.com/comments.php?shownews=15345
I have one solution for you.. I just also bought my Ipod VIdeo 60 GB 3 days ago and having problem with Quicktime 7.0.3.
Everytime I click on Itunes Icon on my desktop, it says you have older version of Quicktime 7.0.2, Itunes need 7.0.3 or later to be able to play Itunes, Please reinstall Itunes....I did reintalling adn uninstalling millions of times.. still it was the same problem.
Now what I recommend is to uninstall all Quicktime version and Itunes in your computer. Delete everytime you have... shutdown wait for couple of minutes and then go to the above site address I provided. Only download Quicktime alone. Do not download qiucktime and itunes together.. It is no good. And do not go to Apple site to download because it will download together.. That's not what we want. Download Quicktime 7.0.3 version for windows. After successful installation.. Only then Go to apple site and only download Itunes alone. This will work I guaranteed. Because mine is working now!!! Let me know the outcome.. Good luck!!

  • Error message when trying to install Quicktime 7.2

When I try to install Quicktime 7.2 on my MacBook Pro, I get a message saying that there was an error and I need to try again. When I have tried via Software Update, it says it has moved the download to the trash. I am running OS 10.4.10. If it is an additional clue, I also tried downloading and installing Onyx and ran into a similar problem.
Does anyone have any idea what might be causing this?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
You are trying to update to OS X 10.8.2 using the conventional update package for other Macs.
You have a Mid 2012 MacBook Pro, and it needs a special 10.8.2 version. To install it, open  > Software Update and install all the available updates

  • A extremely weird and crazy problems trying to install Quicktime

For the last couple of hours I've tried every angle to try to fix this problem. Now the crazyiest part of this is not only can I not install Quicktime but I can't even download a file that has "quicktime" in the name. If I try to download any version of Quicktime that has "Quicktime"(all of them) in the name, it finishes and I try to open it, and I get a msg "(filename) doesn't exist. It may have been renamed, moved or deleted...". So the only way I can download the installers is if I change the name to something random, I get the error msg even if I rename the file "QU".
The main issue is when I try to install Quicktime, with Itunes or Standalone I get a runtime error "This application has requested to terminate in a ununsual way" I have searched the forum and have tried every fix, from Regedits to virus scans you name it. I went to oldversions.com and I couldn't even download version 3.
The other crazy part is that after i get the runtime error message and hit "ok" Quicktime completely disappears from my computer. On some of the older versions I don't get a error msg, it installs, I hit "finish" then I try to go where I installed it to and every single time it disappears, i've tried to install it on the Desktop, external harddrives, etc. but its never their. I'm usually able to fix problems like this but this one is just unbelievable so I more then appeciate any help I can get with this, thanks.

    Pasucal:
The behavior you are seing suggests a virus or system corruption of some kind. The best way to get back up and running may be to perform a repair installation of Windows. There are steps for performing a repair installation of Windows XP on the Microsoft support site here. There are several other sites on the web that have more information about Windows repair installs. Here is one you might want to review.
Keep in mind that repairing Windows will not remove malicious programs from your computer. After the repair, you will need to update and run a full scan with known-good anti-virus software.

  • Problem with installing quicktime

Ok I downloaded quicktime for windows and installed it but when it gets to the end of installation it reboots my pc and doesn't finish the install. And when I log back in I get the message from windows that there was a serious error or w/e. And it shows the quicktime icon but when I double click it shows this error "QuickTime failed to initialize. Error # -2095 check to make sure Quicktime is installed properly on this computer" I tried reinstalling twice and each time it does the same thing. anybody know why?

I am also having these same problems. I have downloaded Quicktime numerous times and get then when I go to start-up iTunes get an error msg that I need to install Quicktime !!?? I am using XP OS. Also wondering if a re-intstall of iTunes will mean that I would lose all stored music files?

  • Errors when installing Quicktime 7

I purchased and installed Quicktime Pro. When I upgraded to Quicktime 7, I get error messages on my desktop.
The movie file P1020888.MOV cannot be found. Without this file, the movie cannot play properly. (Cancel or search)
I can't cancel this message, the movies in question are old movies that have been deleted.
I have had to uninstall Quicktime to get rid of these messages.

  • Problems installing Quicktime - please help!

I just purchased a new iPod and I attempted to install Quicktime 7 from the site and as the download completes, an error message pops up saying "Some installation files are corrupt. Please download a fresh copy and retry intstallation." I also tried installing the itunes and quicktime components using the iPod CD, but I also get an error message as the download completes telling me to get a fresh copy and start again. What should I do??? Any help would be really appreciated. Thanks

for all of you having problems with Quicktime, install the alternative version. works great! no more problems or time wasted searching for answers to error questions!

  • When starting imovie I get an error missing quicktime components. To solve the problem I have upgraded to latest version but it didn't help. I want to either solve this problem or get a refund for the useless upgrade.

Mac OS X 10.6 includes QuickTime versions 10.0 and 7.6.3. The QuickTime 7 player will only be present if a QuickTime Pro key was present at the time of installation, or if specified as part of a custom install, or individually downloaded:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/dl923
Snow Leopard update 10.6.4 included an update to 7.6.6 (if installed). You can install it from the above link  even though it says for 10.6.3. It's the same version of QuickTime Player 7.6.6.
(Only QuickTime Player 7.6.3 or 7.6.6 can be updated to "Pro".)
iMovie does not, AFAIK, use QT 10.

  • Problem Installing Quicktime 7

    Hi,
I'm trying to install Quicktime 7 on my windows laptop (running windows 7).  When I run the install program, it starts up , then stops and says "There is a problem with this windows installer package.  A program required for this install to complete could not be run.  Contact your support personnel or package vendor."  I have tried simply running the installer and also running it "as administrator" but to no avail.
    Thanks!
    Mike

I'm gonna go ahead and answer my own question ... LOL.  After doing some online research via google it turns out what I'm experiencing is a so called Windows 1721 error.  It would be nice if windows actually told me that that's what it is, and for that matter which program is the "required" program, but it doesn't.
After some additional research, someone suggested that the program in question is Apple Software Update and the proposed solution was to "repair" that program in "Programs" under the Control Panel.  I did that, and finally both Quicktime and iTunes were able to install.
Other suggestions that didn't seem to make any difference were to turn off the firewall and virus protection software.
    Thanks Mike!
    Mike
