Error installing Yosemite, Mac unusable

I tried to upgrade a couple of Macs at work yesterday, the first two (iMac Retina and a Mac Pro) worked without a problem, but on the third, iMac 3-4 years old I guess, I got an error message saying "An error occurred trying to extract the file AdditionalVoicec.pkg". I tried rebooting three times and everytime the install starts over and I get the exact same error message. I then tried to reboot in Rescue mode to reinstall 10.7 only to find that it has been over written by 10.10. I then tried to boot again and it re-downloaded 10.10 only to crash with the exact same error.
Any ideas how to get the mac working again?

Check if there is a Recovery partition: to do that reboot while holding down the option key. If you have a recovery partition that icon will be displayed. Boot from it, run Disk Utility and repair the damaged drive.
If there is no Recovery partition you could connect this mac to another one, and boot the damaged Mac in Target Disk Mode. This will mount the bad drive on the desktop of the second Mac, and you can try repairing it with DU that is on the good Mac (Applications / Utilities).
This is one guide from Apple. There are others for more recent Macs. (Search for target disk mode.)

  • Error: "install failed mac os x could not be installed on your computer"

Wanted to post an error I repeatedly got in case anyone else out there has the same issue. Went to do a snowleopard (10.6) upgrade and clean install on a mac pro (coming from 10.5). After about the "26 minutes left" mark I repeatedly got the following error:
"install failed mac os x could not be installed on your computer
the installer could not copy the necessary support files
click restart to restart your computer and try installing again"
i searched a bunch for this and could not find any definitive answers or help.
the log file was very vague, referring to errors writing package(s).
at first i thought it was a bad DVD drive as it was making a bunch of noise and taking a long time to boot. So i went and purchased a new DVD drive and successfully installed it. nope, same issue. then i pulled out all of my 3rd party RAM. nope. then i tried swapping the RAM into different configurations, nope.
after many many hours of various methods and re-partitioning, etc, just for the heck of it i replaced the harddrive, and it worked!
So, for those of you out there who get this error, try troubleshooting your hardware, try swapping your harddrive.

You should be able to install Mac OS X 10.7 or later on your 2011 MacBook Pro without issue, if it came with 10.6.3 as your signature suggests.  Mind you, any 2011 MacBook Pro must use the original 10.6 installer disc labelled MacBook Pro if it desires to have 10.6 installed on it.   The retail installer disc will not work on that model, nor will one from another age MacBook Pro, or other model labelled installer.  Also
10.7 came both on USB Flash drive and Mac App Store installer versions.   Both required either 10.6.6 minimum be pre-installed, or no Mac OS X operating system on the drive or partition it was to be installed on.
10.7.1 through 10.7.5 combo could be installed only once 10.7 had been installed.  A combo update is available for installing on top of any version of 10.7.  Otherwise only the preceding version could be updated to the next.
10.8 came only on Mac App Store installer.  It is available only to 10.6.8 and later users.
10.8.1 to 10.8.5 combo could be installed only once 10.8 had been installed.  A combo update is available for installing on top of any version of 10.8.  Otherwise only the preceding version could be updated to the next.
10.9 came only on Mac App Store installer. It is available only to 10.6.8 and later users.
Both 10.9 and 10.9.1 had a serious security vulnerability, which only 10.9.2 addressed.
10.9.2 combo could be installed only once 10.9 had been installed.
For all three Mac App Store releases, the partition to be installed on had to be GUID partition formatted according to Apple Disk Utility.

  • Error installing on Mac

I had to do a clean reinstall of the Mac OS to solve some problems. I downloaded a fresh copy of the Photoshop Elements 6 installer to reinstall Elements.
However, when trying to reinstall it, at the System Check step of the install process, it pops up the alert dialog:
"JavaScript alert. Critical errors were found in setup -- incompatible payloads already installed. Please see the setup log file for details.”
It will go no further in the installation than this. I ran Software Update and updated to the latest version of Java on this Mac.
How do I fix this? Thanks.

I'm not sure what you mean by a "clean reinstall," but you should manually remove any existing bits of adobe programs that you can find (don't forget to check places like library>application support), then run this:
    http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=kb402767&sliceId=2
    before trying the install again.

  • Error Installing Yosemite

The download is complete but it keeps giving me an error of
"This disk has S.M.A.R.T. errors.  This disk has a hardware problem that can't be repaired.  Back up as much of the data as possible and replace the disk."
I need to know what this means an how to solve the issue.  I had a problem with installing Mountain Lion and had to reformat my computer for it to take.
    Thank you!

It means that the drive’s about to fail. Use Time Machine or a program such as the Disk Utility, Carbon Copy Cloner, or SuperDuper to put your data onto an external drive, and then replace the internal one.

  • Can't clean install Yosemite to 3rd party SSD in 2008 MBP

    Hi all.
I'm a longtime lurker, first time poster. I seem to have really stymied myself with trying to upgrade my ol' reliable MBP.
    My machine:
    Late 2008 15" MacBook Pro
    2.4Ghz Core 2 Duo
4GB RAM (3rd party Crucial, 2 matching 2GB sticks - it originally shipped with 2 1GB sticks, I upgraded it around 2 years ago)
120GB SSD (3rd party OCZ Agility III, it originally shipped with a 500GB Hitachi HDD - I've just installed this and am trying to use it)
No optical drive (it broke years ago)
Here is what I've done so far:
Removed the 500GB HDD and inserted the 120GB SSD
Created a bootable USB stick with the Yosemite installer on it
Booted from said USB stick and used Disk Utility to format the SSD with a GUID partition table, with 1 HFS+ (Journaled) formatted partition
    Begun the Yosemite installer
The progress bar crawled for about 3 hours until it got about halfway, then it failed out with an error. Unfortunately I stupidly don't have a copy of the error logs
Booted from the USB stick again
Now the SSD does not show up at all in Disk Utility and I am not given the option of it when attempting to install Yosemite - so I can't reformat the drive or attempt another install
I have tried to run the Apple Hardware Test (to see if there are any problems with the RAM that might have triggered the error installing Yosemite), but unfortunately this does not seem possible on my machine. Since it is a late 2008 model with no optical drive, from the research I've done there seems to be no way I can run it. It can't do an Internet Hardware Test, and the 'trick' of holding F2 during bootup won't work because apparently you need to have the original shipping OS installed. From memory this machine shipped with Leopard - the OS on my old 500GB HDD is Snow Leopard however.
Does anyone have any ideas for what I can do next here? My goal is simply to do a clean install of Yosemite onto my SSD. I'm at a bit of a loss, especially since the SSD isn't even showing up in Disk Utility now.
An additional detail: There isn't anything in the slot where the optical drive should be. 2 years ago I opened my machine and removed it, replacing it with a 2.5" 'optibay' drive caddy. Unfortunately it was a pretty cheap caddy and it never functioned properly, so I removed it before beginning the above process. There is just an empty space now inside the machine, since I threw away my old broken optical drive years ago. I don't know if this may also be causing problems.
Many thanks for any and all assistance!

    Thanks for responding Leopardus.
I tried holding Cmd+R at startup last night, but unfortunately all I got is a flashing folder with a question mark on it, presumably indicating that it can't find any files.
Internet Recovery is unfortunately not possible on my computer, I believe this feature was only included with Macs that shipped with Lion or later versions of OS X (mine shipped with Leopard).
The problem in the thread that you linked seems a bit different to mine - I think the core issue for me is that the SSD is now not recognised at all by Disk Utility, meaning I cannot even format it to try installing again.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can access this 'invisible' SSD? I am considering buying a USB to SATA cable and connecting it to a friend's Mac.

  • I recently did a system update and installed Yosemite on my Mac. Now I am unable to open CS5 at all. The error message I get is this: "To open Adobe Photoshop CS5.1, you need to install legacy Java SE 6 runtime." I have tried downloading this and it still

I recently did a system update and installed Yosemite on my Mac. Now I am unable to open CS5 at all. The error message I get is this: "To open Adobe Photoshop CS5.1, you need to install legacy Java SE 6 runtime." I have tried downloading this and it still gives me the same mess

In the details it is mentioned that it is an outdated version of Java.
Is this a security risk that i need to live with to get CS5 to run with Yosemite?
Also i need to reject messages from Java in the future about updates, or not?
    thx for any input

  • Installed yosemite. CS5 no longer workers. Error message about Java SE 6. But SE 6 doesn't seem to have a MAC version. How can I resolve?

Installed Yosemite on my Mac. CS5 no longer workers. When I try to open Photoshop, I get an error message about needing a Java SE 6. This is different from the other Java update Yosemite required (I already installed that). I assumed the higher update would suffice for previous versions, but I guess it doesn't work that way. Went over to the Java site, but SE 6 doesn't seem to have a MAC version. How can I resolve this?

  • Fresh install of Yosemite, nearly unusable, constant spinning wheel

    Hello everyone,
    MacBook Pro 13'', mid 2012
    750GB HD
    8GB Ram
    2.9GHz dual-core Intel i7
A little background... once a year I usually back up my entire Macbook Pro, wipe it clean and install a fresh version of the most recent OS. I did this about a month ago and installed a fresh copy of Yosemite from Mountain Lion. For about 3 weeks it worked perfectly... running Adobe programs, and all my other normal applications (nothing big... Firefox, iMail, iTunes, etc).
NOW... about a week ago everything went to crap. The computer has become almost unusable without any change in habits of use. I get a CONSTANT spinning wheel whenever I click on anything its about a 30sec wait time and if I try to type something into Finder or Firefox its the death of the session... I have to restart the computer. Im at my whits end and about to use this computer as a expensive frisbee. This all started in Yosemite out of no where. There is NOTHING on my hard drive other than the operating system...
    What I have already done:
Taken it into the Genius Bar. They ran some tests on the computer and physically took out the hard drive to test it on their systems. Everything checked out and received a PASS rating. They said it was nothing hardware related. They said it could have been a bad install of Yosemite since the hard drive was showing up as a "Logical Volume Group" instead of "Mac Extended Journaled". Suggested to go home and re-install Yosemite. So I did... 3 times... and nothing changed at all, same spinning wheel of death with nothing installed other than the OS.
    In terminal
diskutil cs listdiskutil cs revert "UUID"
    this changed nothing as well
    Ran:
    Verify Disk Permissions
Repair Disk Permissions - this fixed a handful of errors
Verify DiskThese 3 steps did not help much.
I am now back running Mountain Lion, it is more responsive but I still get a constant spinning wheel. Again, There is NOTHING on my hard drive other than the OS.

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
The test works on OS X 10.7 ("Lion") and later. I don't recommend running it on older versions of OS X. It will do no harm, but it won't do much good either.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of it have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message. See, for example, this discussion.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. Try to test under conditions that reproduce the problem, as far as possible. For example, if the computer is sometimes, but not always, slow, run the test during a slowdown.
You may have started up in "safe" mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:
    PATH=/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/usr/libexec;clear;cd;p=(1291 ' 0.5 0.25 50 1000 15 5120 1000 25000 6 6 5 1 0 100 ' 51 25600 4 10 25 5120 102400 1000 25 1 400 40 500 300 85 25 20480 262144 20     Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, a series of lines will appear in the Terminal window like this:
    [Process started]
Part 1 of 8 done at … sec
Part 8 of 8 done at … sec
The test results are on the Clipboard.
            Please close this window.
    [Process completed]
The intervals between parts won't be exactly equal, but they give a rough indication of progress. The total number of parts may be different from what's shown here.
Wait for the final message "Process completed" to appear. If you don't see it within about ten minutes, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, press the key combination control-C or command-period to stop it and go to the next step. You'll have incomplete results, but still something.
    12. When the test is complete, or if you stopped it because it was taking too long, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak for themselves, not for me. The test itself is harmless, but whatever else you're told to do may not be. For others who choose to run it, I don't recommend that you post the test results on this website unless I asked you to.

16 mo young Mac Pro will not turn on. Dead. Why. No problems ever! Installed Yosemite and did not boot up after. Did that kill it? To young to die. What happened?what do I do now??????? Help!

Note that you don't have a Mac Pro as stated. Your profile says you have a MacBook Pro. Please clarify as they are entirely different computers. If nothing below works for you, then make a Genius Appointment and take it in for service.
Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the
computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager
screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    4. Reinstall Yosemite: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall OS X from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Mac book pro running slow since installing yosemite

    hello
since I have installed yosemite on my 2012 mac book pro most things are VERY LAGGY and slow things don't close I have to hard power the machine down is there any way to do a system restore back to mavericks ??
    this yosemite is crap
    mick

    Hi ..
Make sure to quit all open applications prior to shutting down your Mac.
Not enough free storage space can slow your Mac down.
Click your Apple menu icon top left in your screen. From the drop down menu click About This Mac > More Info > Storage. Make sure there's at least 15% free disk space.
OS X Tips Where did my Disk Space Go
If there's enough free storage space, open System Preferences > Users & Groups then select the Login Items tab. Remove all items there.
Same with:   HD > Library > StartupItems
    Then restart your Mac.
    And check the startup disk.
Launch Disk Utility located in HD > Applications > Utillities
Select the startup disk on the left then select the First Aid tab.
Click:  Verify Disk (not Verify Disk Permissions)
If Disk Utility reports errors, restart your Mac while holding down the Command + R keys.
From there you should be able to access the built in utilities in OS X Recovery to repair the startup disk and restore OS X.

great Problemes after installing Yosemite (10.10.2 ) with Photoshop CS6....The program crashes --last time 10 times during my work session..wacomtable doesnt work..it is slow...and get error messages about the graphic card....It s a Terror to work with my beloved Photoshop!

The Yosemite upgrade very often damages existing Photoshop installations.  Thank Apple for that.
You need to uninstall and re-install Photoshop, then apply all the Photoshop upgrades from scratch.
But first, give us details about your setup:
    BOILERPLATE TEXT:
Note that this is boilerplate text.
If you give complete and detailed information about your setup and the issue at hand,
such as your platform (Mac or Win),
exact versions of your OS, of Photoshop (not just "CS6", but something like CS6v.13.0.6) and of Bridge,
your settings in Photoshop > Preference > Performance
the type of file you were working on,
machine specs, such as total installed RAM, scratch file HDs, total available HD space, video card specs, including total VRAM installed,
what troubleshooting steps you have taken so far,
    what error message(s) you receive,
if having issues opening raw files also the exact camera make and model that generated them,
if you're having printing issues, indicate the exact make and model of your printer, paper size, image dimensions in pixels (so many pixels wide by so many pixels high). if going through a RIP, specify that too.
A screen shot of your settings or of the image could be very helpful too,
    etc.,
someone may be able to help you (not necessarily this poster, who is not a Windows user).
Please read this FAQ for advice on how to ask your questions correctly for quicker and better answers:

Kernel panic, machine check, multiple error reporting banks, on a Mac Pro with Xeon processor with Error Correction Code Memory means Uncorrectable RAM memory error.
In a Mac Pro 3,1 your memory is in pairs in adjacent sockets. Single-bit errors are corrected in Hardware without any slowdown. Uncorrectable (double-bit) errors cause this distinctive kernel panic, machine check to keep from poisoning your data.

  • Installed Yosemite - Canon MF8300C printer won't print or scan to the MAC.

I recently installed the Yosemite and now my Canon MF8300C printer will not print or scan.
Printing - I get an error message: Stopped - 'Filter' Failed X pages
Scanning - I get the device to show up but when I select Open Scanner nothing happens.
I have had this printer on Mac Mini for 2 years now. I did not know it at the time but this printer and MAC have always had handshake issues. I often have to turn it off and back on to get the wi-fi address to be recognized, or have to re-install the drivers, even though I have downloaded directly from Canon. This is a top notch home office printer why have the drivers not been made compatible by now?
I can print fine to my trust old Samsung ML-1650 but that does not solve my color or scanning needs that worked up until I installed Yosemite. What gives?

With regards to printing, you need to have installed the MF v10.4.0 driver that supports Yosemite. If you have installed this driver and you still get the Filter failed error, then I suggest you remove the MF from Printers & Scanners and then open Finder and select Go > Go to folder. Then enter /Library/Printers/Canon and press the Go button, With the Canon folder open you will see a folder called CUPS_MF_Printer. Trash this folder and then empty the Trash. Restart the Mac and run the MF v10.4.0 driver installer again and add the printer. Now see if it prints without error.
As for the Scanner, while in the Canon folder you should also see an entry called MFScanner. Trash this folder if present then run the ScanGear v2.3.0 installer for Yosemite. Now see if you can scan, making sure that you do have the Scan button selected on the MF and set to Remote Scanner.
