Error: invalid drive E on upgrade to itunes 10.5

Can't upgrade to itunes 10.5.  Get error: "invalid drive E". What's the problem?

See this previous User Tip.
The installer is falling over because you don't currently have a drive E: which, at a guess, was used during a previous installation. The tip suggests ways to temporarily create the drive letter so the installation can proceed.

I'm trying to upgrade to iTunes v 10.6 on a windows vista pc and keep getting the error, "Invalid Drive/E".  What do I do to get past this?

Open a Windows Command prompt, e.g. Hit Start > Run, type in CMD and press OK.
    Type in SUBST E: C:\<enter>
This will map E: to C: until the machine is restarted or you enter SUBST E: /D at the command prompt. Now you can try uninstalling or upgrading the software again.
(If upgrading software which lets you choose a location, install the software in the default location, not on the E:\ drive.)

Any help please ? So far i can't do anything everything has been erased ....
    Thanks.

    Hi tunker80,
I would also try formatting the HDD before you start with recovery installation. You can use a normal Microsoft Windows disk to format your HDD. After this you can test recovery installation.
If the same happens you could try installing Windows from Microsoft disk. So you can test if the problem is related to hardware or just recovery disk. If recovery disk is defective you can order a new from Toshiba directly. Therefore follow the link posted by MisterX.

  • Upgrading to itunes ver9, invalid drive?

    Hi All,
I have downloaded and tried to install V9 of itunes but it comes up with an error invalid drive, when I do try change the I: to a J: it comes up with the error 2869. I tried uninstalling both quicktime and itunes, including all associated apple installs, then installing the 2 apps seperately but no luck.
It seems like the quicktime wants to install on my J: which i dont have, if I change my disk management to a J: it shows up saying the drive has no space (expected that), but it wont let me change the install to my C:???
    Any ideas appreciated.

OK, I figured it out and in case anyone else has this problem, Jaxon gave me the clues to figure it out.
The upgrade did, in fact, change my boot drive. F12 didn't work on my Gateway, but F10 did. That brought up the boot drive options and I simply had to change it to my hard drive, though it doesn't say "Hard drive" or "Drive C". My drive is a Western Digital 3.8 GB or something like that and the letters and numbers shown as one of the drive options led me to believe that my C: drive was one of the options.
Hope I can help someone in the future avoid the frustration I've had tonight with Apple iTunes upgrade.

  • Invalid drive error - installing a new version of iTunes

When I first installed iTunes a few years ago, it was originally loaded on a portable hard drive called (F:). I have everything transferred onto a new hard drive called (E:).
However, when prompted by iTunes to download the latest version, I download the iTunes setup successfully, but when I try to open and run it, I keep getting the error 'Invalid Drive (F:).
I want to avoid deleting and reinstalling iTunes all together - do I have any other choices?
    Thanks.

I'm having exactly the same problem so if someone can advise it would be much appreciated.

  • I can find all my music in the iTunes media folder on my c drive, but not in the iTunes library.

    Hi-
First time here - thanks in advance for any help!
Last year, I loaded a lot of music from my CD collection into iTunes 10 on my PC (running Vista). Now, much of that content does not appear in the iTunes library,  but I can find all of it in the iTunes media folder on the c drive. I upgraded to iTunes 11 today and the same problem persists.
Can anyone tell me why the content doesn't show up in the iTunes library?
    Thanks again!
    John

  • When installing iTunes 10 I get an error message "Invalid Drive: F:|". ANy advice?

All I want to do is upgrade from 9 to 10 so that I can run my ipad.
When installing iTunes 10 I get an error message "Invalid Drive: F:|". ANy advice?

    Bissley,
I have received this error in the past and it is usually caused by Windows automatically changing your external drive letters when you install. There are two ways around it; first, follow the directions provided by b noir. Second, within iTunes go to Edit > Preferences > Advanced
Under the advanced options you'll see a recessed section called "iTunes Media folder location". Although you may have set this in the past it, if Windows changed your drive letters it will no longer be valid. Default is usually "C:\blah\blah\mymusic"
Changing it just a matter of clicking "change" and finding your music folder again or change your drive letter back (if it changed at all).
If Windows is changing your drive letters, it is best to set them yourself so that everytime you plug in the devices they use the letter you assigned. Here is a link for that process:
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Change-add-or-remove-a-drive-le tter
    Hope it helps.

  • Can't install Itunes 8, when instal starts error saying "invalid drive e:/"

I had the oitunes version before 8 came out and now that it did I tryied to upgrade it but an error message came up saying "invalid drive e:/" so I went and looked for a solution so I tried uninstalling it and installing it agian but the error message still comes up, so now I'm stuck with no itunes at all. I checked my computer and I don't have a drive called e:/ so I don't know what is going on, can anyone help me please????

At some point, for your computer, the registry settings for the location of folders, such as "My Music" have been changed to point to a drive E: that is no longer there or maybe was never there.
What you need to do is go into your registry and look for this E: drive.
Unfortunately, there are multiple entries in your registry that can point off into the distance. What I do is go into regedit and just look for "My Music". On my system, which is going to be different because it's Vista 64 bit, the registry keys of interest are:
    HKEYCURRENTUSER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders
HKEY_USERS\<long random meaning number that is user specific>\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders
If that doesn't work, look through the registry for E:\. Somewhere you've got a system variable in your registry pointing to a drive that doesn't exist.
Another option is to get a USB thumb drive and map it to E:\ so that you have a drive on E: and then everything should work.

  • Invalid Drive: H:\ error message when downloading iTunes 8.0.2

For some time now, I've been trying to upgrade to the 8.0.2 version of iTunes. I get almost to the end, when I get an error message that says "Invalid Drive: H:\" and then I can't download it. I've tried to figure out the problem, but I have no idea what to do. I'm afraid to remove iTunes altogether and then try downloading it because I don't know if I'll be able to download it then, and if I can't then I won't have the program at all. Any suggestions?

If you are having problems, it is best not to use "Upgrade" in iTunes. DOwnload the installer from the APple site:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
SAve the installer onto your desktop rather than running it from your browser.
Then you can upgrade manually using the installer you saved.
That won't solve your problem, but it simplifies things.
You can often get round the invalid drive message by providing iTunes with the drive while you are installing. DO you know what comes up as drive H:, maybe a camera or external drive?
If you don't have something that comes up as H:, maybe you could plug in a memory stick and allocate drive H: to it.
This article about something else contains instructions for allocating a drive letter.
