Error:iPhone can't be used 'cos the required software is not installed...

When I connect my iPhone 3G to iTunes i get this error message;
'This iPhone cannot be used because the required software is not installed. Run the iTunes installer to remove iTunes, then install iTunes again.'
I have done what it says several times but it still comes up with this error message, can anyone help?
Thanks Chris

Make sure it is the latest iTunes software installer you're using.

I have a new iPod Touch 5th gen. My computer works on Windows 7. Latest ITunes gives me this message: "this ipod can't be used because the required software is not installed. Run the iTunes installer to remove iTunes then install the 64 bit version of iTunes." I have already removed and reinstalled a couple of times--making sure to remove all the related applications as well--Bonjour, Apple Software update, Apple Application Support. Help!

    (apologies for barging in, lllass.)
Let's try a standalone Apple Mobile Device Support install. It still might not install, but fingers crossed any error messages will give us a better idea of the underlying cause of why it's not installing under normal conditions.
Download and save a copy of the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64setup.exe) installer file to your hard drive:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
Download and install the free trial version of WinRAR:
    http://www.rarlab.com/download.htm
Right-click the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64setup.exe), and select "Extract to iTunesSetup" (or "Extract to iTunes64Setup"). WinRAR will expand the contents of the file into a folder called "iTunesSetup" (or "iTunes64Setup").
Go into the folder and doubleclick the AppleMobileDeviceSupport.msi (or AppleMobileDeviceSupport64.msi) to do a standalone AMDS install.
(If it offers you the choice to remove or repair, choose "Remove", and if the uninstall goes through successfully, see if you can reinstall by doubleclicking the AppleMobileDeviceSupport.msi again.)
Does it install (or uninstall and then reinstall) properly for you? If so, does your device connect without that message now?

I do love those canned messages (Not!).
Your post makes it sound like the mobile device manager is the problem and that you just zapped the iTunes and nothing else.
First : Repair Mobile Device Manager.
    If that works you're golden.
    If it doesn't then ....
News flash : back up your downloads and then go into Add/Remove in Control Panel and get everything!
Yes, that's Bonjour, AirTime, and everything else.
    Only the downloads remain!
Now re-do iTunes from a fresh download.

As i said, when i connect my iphone to my computer, itunes says, that it can not find it because the required software is not installed and that i should remove itunes and install the 64 bits version.

  • Error: "This iPad cannot be used because the required software is not installed.  Install the 64-bit version of iTunes."

The 64-bit iTunes is definitely installed, but it doesn't recognize it as such and won't allow me to sync my devices.  Previous steps that I found here (which are to crack open the installer to isolate the mobile support file) don't work, since I can't extract files from the installer.  This problem occurs with both my iPad and iPhone.

    Hello there CalCoo,
Looks like we need to get the 64 bit version of iTunes installed on your system there. First start here, and remove iTunes and its components from the system: Removing and reinstalling iTunes, QuickTime, and other software components for Windows Vista or Windows 7 http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1923.
You can download the 64 bit version of iTunes here: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1615

This iphone can not be used because the required software is not installed. Run the itunes installer to remove itunes, then install the 64bit version of itunes
I keep getting the above error everytime I plug in my iphone.
I am not daft, I do have the 64bit version of iTunes installed already. When I installed itunes 10.5 and more recently 10.5.1 I got an error message that rolls back a section of the installation (The updater I think) before finishing off installing iTunes.
After the installation iTunes will work normally apart from when I try to connect a device. At which point I get the title error message and I can not sync my phone.
It's probably down to Itunes not installing properly however no matter what I try I can not sort the problem out. I've tried uninstalling all apple programmes followed by a registry clean, then reinstall. I've tried the same again but in a specific order. I've tried repairing iTunes, repairing the updater etc etc. Nothing seems to work. I'm out of ideas.
Has anybody had this problem? Please can somebody tell me how to fix it!
Getting an iPad this Christmas and if I can't sync that up to my PC I may just have to go over to ANDROID!!!

Is there a way to install this on its own?

I received this errir msg when I wants to sync my 3gs iPhone. And I already update my iTunes to 64-bit. "This iPhone cannot be used because the required software is not installed.Run the iTunes installer to remove iTunes, then install the 64-bit version itunes".

First make sue you are installing the 64 bit version of iTunes.
Second make sure it is iTunes 10.7 or later.
I would download a fresh copy of the 64 bit version of iTunes 11. After installation reboot your computer.
Before connecting your phone reset your device. Press and hold the Home and Sleep buttons simultaneously ignoring the red slider should one appear until the Apple logo appears. Let go of the buttons and let the device restart. See if that fixes your problem.

this phone cannot be used because the required software is not installed. i have installed and re installed the program and every time i plug my iphone 6 in the same message pops up

Have managed to cure it based upon the following information received -
I keep having this problem with iTunes when I try to connect my iPod Touch to iTunes. I keep getting this error message: "This iPod cannot be used because the required software is not installed".
    What I did:
Run the iTunes installer to remove iTunes, then install the 64-bit version of iTunes.
I have already done this required step about a hundred times and I am still getting this same error so if you have any idea of what I can do please help.
    Solution
I was running the 64-bit version if iTunes, and I did uninstall and re-install just to make sure -- no luck. Turns out there's a really easy solution, I'll spare you the detail of how I figured it out, but if you encounter the same issue, here's the solution:
    1) Using WinRAR (or any other decent archiving program), extract iTunesWindows64Setup.exe
    2) Right click on AppleMobileDeviceSupport64.msi and choose Properties.
    3) Switch to the Compatibility tab and check the "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" box, and select your only option, "Previous versions of Windows", in the drop-down box.
    4) Click OK
    5) Double click the AppleMobileDeviceSupport64.msi
    6) Tell it to Repair your current installation
    7) Done!

Hi. How come iTunes keeps saying:"this iPod can not be used because the required software is not installed. Run the iTunes installer to remove iTunes, then install the 64 bit version of iTunes?"  Wth...i am using the 64 bit version of itunes. Why does it keep saying that? Will someone Help me please!? This is is getting frustrating. I already had done a full removal of everything! I even removed and deleted my library...then had to put all 500 songs back on one by one. So, i don't have to remove everything again, just to get my ipod to work on here. You, know before the itunes update, my ipod and itunes were working just fine.

wow, that was a quick reply. lol. but i have removed everything. I wasn't even able to get iTunes on my computer for a little while. i kept getting errors on that. Now it's saying that the required software isn't installed. Hmm, could it be referring to Apple Mobile Device Support? That is supposed to be installed with when iTunes gets installed right? I only ask, because that  didn't get installed with the itunes setup.

    Hi, Mommacat26.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
This usually means that a required component is missing.  Start with completely uninstalling iTunes and all of it's components in the order specified in the article below.  Once this is done, download and install iTunes.

If you receive any errors when uninstalling any components of iTunes, try the steps in the article below for each component that gives you an error.
