Error: iTunes Library file locked, or no permission

After fighting with what I'm afraid is a toasted iPod (another story), iTunes hung to the point that even Force Quit took several tries to kill it. Upon restart and attempting to re-open iTunes, I'm getting an error message that says "The iTunes Library file is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have write permission for this file". Not true, obviously.
Any suggestions?

Fixed.  For those using WinXP...Here's what I had to do:
It was a file properties thing as mentioned in other posts, but to change the file properties...
1.  Boot Windows in SAFE MODE by holding F8 down during bootup
2.  Log on as Administrator
3.  Navigate to the iTunes Libary.itl file (My Music/iTunes)
4.  Right Click and pull up the file properties
5.  Under Security, re-add the user account to the file permissions
6.  Then change file permissions to FULL (Read/Write/Edit...)
7.  Reboot & Viola !
Once you unlock the write protected status (which got defaulted to the Adminstrator account), iTunes opens just fine.

  • ITunes Library File Locked

    Hi,
Have been using iTunes 10.5 on my WinXP machine - no problems.  During a movie download tonight, iTunes crashed.  Tried to reopen and got the infamous error "iTunes Library file locked or on a locked disk..."  Tried several remedies listed.
Verified that MyMusic folder and contents are not READ ONLY.  I am unable to rename, edit, or move the file...she's locked up tight.
Tried repairing the Windows Registry assignment using the Tweak UI utility discussed in another thread.  No joy.
Tried starting iTunes from another account on the PC - iTunes boots fine.
Pulling my hair out (what little is left)...Any ideas out there ???

  • I get the error "itunes library file cannot be saved. An unknown error occurred (-50)."

I recently installed iTunes on a new laptop with Windows 7.  Why do I get the error "iTunes library file cannot be saved. An unknown error occurred (-50)?"

  • Error iTunes library file cannot be saved. A folder was specified instead of a file.

I keep getting this error "The iTunes library file cannot be saved. A folder was specified instead of a file."  I keep my library on mu drive and my music folder on a networked drive. There appears to be nothing I can do to correct this. Any sugges

I've made some progress. In iTunes preferences/advanced you can re-set warnings. Repairing Disk Permissions on your boot drive will help when iTunes won't start. In addition to the saving issue, I've suffered through the problem of iTunes creating multiple .tmp files. With iTunes closed you can delete these files.
I also found these two threads helpful and have turned off local snapshots for Time Machine.

I have restored Lion once and it was easy. No disc required as Lion creates a recovery file on your computer, Instructions are here http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.7/en/mchlp1599.html
    Hope this helps.

  • Error: itunes library file cannot be saved. you do not have enough...

Last night this started popping up "itunes library file cannot be saved. you do not have enough access priviledges for this operation.". Nothing in my system or in itunes has changed. Anyone know what would cause this? Is it safe to import music into itunes at the moment? Will things not be saved to the library?

Still not the problem. Tracks are imported by itunes. Tracks are save to HD. Tracks show up in itues library. Close itunes... tracks still on HD, but not in library. No security changes have been made. This is a 500GB HD that is over half full music , all in my itunes library, and now for some reason itunes cannot associate with these new files. No updates have happened, I've rolled back to a system point predating my problem, problem still there.

  • ITunes library is locked or on a locked disk windows 7

    Hi all,
I recently downloaded some software called Jamcast which allows you to view iTunes / Spotify files on your Xbox360.
Since then my iTunes has been having problems.
I have a large number of mp3s on here 110Gb so it's causing me a bit of annoyance.
I'm getting the error iTunes library is locked or on a locked disk...
If I hold down shift I can get into iTunes and do the scan for media which brings back all my music but it loses the smart playlists and then when I come out of iTunes and go back into it brings back the same error message again.
My computer only has two accounts Mark administrator and Guest so I doubt it is a permissions error.
Also I seem to have far too many folders in my iTunes folder in my Windows 7 library.
    I have
    iTunes
    subfolders
    iTunes Media
    Previous iTunes Libraries
    Mobile Applications
    iTunes Music
    iTunes Plug-ins
    iPod Games
    Album Artworks
    iTunes1
    subfolders
    iTunes Media
    Album Artwork
    and
    Playlists
    Recorded Radio
    License Backup
    iPod
and my iTunes library fles I have
    iTunes Library.itl
    iTunes Music Library.xml
    itunesPrefs (2).xml
    iTunesPrefs.xml
    sentinel (2)
    iTunes Library.xml
    iTunes LibraryBackup.itl
    iTunes Library Extras (2).itdb
    iTunes Library Genius (2).itdb
    iTunes Library (3).itl
    iTunes Library (2).xml
    iTunes LIbrary (2) Extras.itdb
    iTunes Library (2) Genius.itdb
    iTunes Library (2).itl
    iTunes Library Extras.itdb
    itunes Library Genius.itdb
    sentinel
A lot of the itl and itdb files seem to have a sort of locked icon on them.
Please could you let me know what the xml files and itl files do in iTunes thanks.

Copy the following (bold text) into a new document in Notepad (Don't use Word or Wordpad - they add formatting and it won't work)
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shell\runas]
    @="Take Ownership"
    "NoWorkingDirectory"=""
    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shell\runas\command]
    @="cmd.exe /c takeown /f \"%1\" && icacls \"%1\" /grant administrators:F"
    "IsolatedCommand"="cmd.exe /c takeown /f \"%1\" && icacls \"%1\" /grant administrators:F"
    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell\runas]
    @="Take Ownership"
    "NoWorkingDirectory"=""
    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell\runas\command]
    @="cmd.exe /c takeown /f \"%1\" /r /d y && icacls \"%1\" /grant administrators:F /t"
    "IsolatedCommand"="cmd.exe /c takeown /f \"%1\" /r /d y && icacls \"%1\" /grant administrators:F /t"
Save it under "All file types" as "ownit.reg". Save it to your desktop.
Double Click it and click OK when prompted. You will now be able to take ownership of ANY file on your sytem with just a right click.

  • ITunes Library File Cannot be Saved. The Disk Cannot be Read From . . .

I use a MacBook Pro with a healthy battery. My iTunes songs are on a USB drive. The Database and XML files are on my MacBook. Power went out in my house and the USB drive shut off. The MacBook stayed up and running. Power came back, powered on the USB drive, open iTunes, and bang: This sorry error: iTunes Library File Cannot be Saved. The Disk Cannot be Read From or Written to.
The disks are healthy, did an fsck and ran disk verify/repair. No problems. Restart iTunes, same error. Obviously a corrupted Databse file. This wouldn't be a big deal if only the XML info would be useful and actually restore critical info such as play count and dates which is essential for the Not-So-Smart Playlist dependencies to work.
This is the third time I've been burned with corrupted iTunes "Database" files. I use "Database" in quotes because a true Database wouldn't crap out like this. It would be recoverable. It would understand a simple SQL "Where" statement. It would have a maintenance script and some means for recoverable backup beyond the lame process of copying the XML file. Or it would at least read in the info the XML file.
I am becoming disillusioned with iTunes and I'm beginning to yearn for my old Linux box running GTKPod which never failed me....

OK, here's an update - After doing the restore as mentioned having everything seemingly work, I erroniously downloaded the iTunes 7.4 & 7.4.1 updates. Now, about 80% of library is non-responsive, ie: shows up in iTunes, but clicking to play does nothing at all. the other 20% of my library plays, but it's not the song it is supposed to be playing. For example, clicking on a song from say, ABBA prodes a wonderful Gorillaz track :-/ (The same Gorillaz track which will not play if I select it...)
I reiterate: WE NEED A MEANS TO BACKUP OUR LIBRARIES RELIABLY!!!!!!!!!!

  • Error - iTunes Library .iti file is locked on a disk or you do not have permission for this file. I can open itunes in the compatibility mode for Windows XP Service Pack 3 ???

In Windows 8 I received the error iTunes Library .iti file is locked on a disk or you do not have permission for this file. I can open itunes in the compatibility mode for Windows XP Service Pack 3.
I've tried changing permissions and sharing - nothing seems to work. mat be a Windows 8 issue???

You also need to make sure you have both read and write permission for the file, or for the whole iTunes folder for that matter.  That's also done in Get Info for the file or folder concerned.

  • ITunes error: library file locked after trying to reset 3rd G ipod

So I haven't used my 3rd generation ipod in a about two weeks, but last time i used it it was fine. Today when i turned it on, it displayed a folder and had "www.applecom/support/ipod" written underneath then automatically shut itself down.
When i tried to connect it to my macbook, itunes popped up, and it said: "your ipod needs to be restored, please click here to restore it." and i did. However, after downloading the software, it gave an error and said it could not be restored. So, i tried again, same error. I then disconnected the ipod and reconnected it. This time, when the macbook said it could not read the disk, it directed me to disk utilities.
In disk utilities, I tried to erase the ipod, but that didnt work. Then it tried to open itunes, but then it gave me that deathly error:
The iTunes library is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have permission to write the file.
the error given when i tried to restore my ipod was: 1418
    now my question(s) is:
    1. how do i get itunes to start working again? EDIT: i figured it out
    2. is there still any chance to save my ipod? How?

EDIT: found the answer on the ipod topic:

when i try to open itunes ,this written appears :"The iTunes Library file is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have write permission for this file. "What does it mean?

To solve this issue all I did was check to ensure that the file permissions were set as described by the earlier posts, followed by simply deleting the iTunes Library Genius.itdb file.  Once the file was deleted I was able to open iTunes without difficulty.  Note that I am running Windows 8.  Hope this helps!

  • I upgraded my OS in my Mac and now I cab't open iTunes. Error message says the iTunes library is locked, in a locked disk or I don't have permission to write.

I upgraded my OS from Lion to Mountain Lion. After that I can't access or open Itunes anymore. Message says " Itunes library is locked, in a locked disc or I don't have permission to write permission for this file.

Back up all data. Don't continue unless you're sure you can restore from a backup, even if you're unable to log in.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user account, and the one in question is not an administrator account, then temporarily promote it to administrator status in the Users & Groups preference pane. To do that, unlock the preference pane using the credentials of an administrator, check the box marked Allow user to administer this computer, then reboot. You can demote the problem account back to standard status when this step has been completed.
Triple-click the following line on this page to select it. Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    { sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR.. ; sudo chown -R $UID:staff ~ $_ ; sudo chmod -R u+rwX ~ $_ ; chmod -R -N ~ $_ ; } 2> /dev/null
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1 or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Boot into Recovery. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
    Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open.
In the Terminal window, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not  going to reset a password.
Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select
     ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.
