Error Joining Airport Network

My new Mac will not go online at home - although it will join other networks elsewhere.
There are 3 other Macs online at home and when I set up my new mac I transferred all the settings over so surely they should be the same and therefore able to access the internet?
Have even removed all passwords. Can anyone help?
2.33 GHz Intel Core Duo 2   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

What I do is create a new Network Location called "All Off" in which all network interfaces are disabled. This essentially "reboots" the network connection from the Mac end.
I also prefer a dedicated "WiFi" location to eliminate the possibility of another interface complicating connecting. This location has only the Airport card enabled.
I suggest you set it to the "All Off" location, then powercycle your WiFi router, meaning reboot it. When it is up and connected, turn on your Mac's network WiFi. When mine refuses to connect that always works.

  • Error joining airport to network

    Hi,
I have a wireless nortel solution set up in our school. We run power over ethernet base unit 2330a access points running back to 5520 POE switch. That runs back to a 2380 security switch. We have the latest firmware.
All our dell xp systems connect with no problem using WPA secured SSID. We also can connect with an open SSID.
All of our macbook's do not. They sometimes do connect, but 90% of the time will not. When i try and select it gives me an error that there was an error joining airport to network "WPCSD"
I have tried everything. This even happens when the system is brand new right out of the box. It happens in 10.4.8 all the way through 10.4.10 with all updates.
Strange, but when i go into xp on our duel boot macs, (same system) there are no problems.
I spoke to apple support, they were not much help, claiming it must be Nortel's problem.
I tried to find an external usb network adapter. I figured if i can connect with that then it must be the airport extreme. I had no luck, all seemed to be made for xp.
Is anyone out there rinning on a nortel wireless solution?
Has anyone had any issues with their macbooks and wireless.
I need out 100 new systems to connect.
    THANKS!

Yes hard wired i have no issues. I have tried the wireless with both DHCP and with static ip. Sharing seems to work. I can connect to another mac.
I have searched Nortel and googled. No luck. We are dealing with thier support. The feel if the xp systems can connect, then the system is fine.
Apple claims that if i can connect to other networks (ie home linksys) then the problem is nortel. see where this is going.
However that does not help me out. The nortel is a very expensive wireless solution, as you can expect. So its not like we can just get rid of it and buy a non-managed solution.
even if we bought external card for the macs that would be a solution, but it does not seem like these are even made.
i was just posting to see if anyone else is using a managed wireless solution like nortel's?
    thanks

  • There was an error joining the network..... help please

I got a mayday call from a friend with an iBook G4 and wonder if anyone here can help me help him solve this problem. He purchased and set up a Netgear wireless router at home about a year ago and up until a few days ago was able to connect fine wirelessly both at work and at home.
For the past few days, when he attempts to connect to his wireless network at home he receives the message "There was an error joining the network X" We checked the settings and Airport is on and active and his network's name shows up in the list of choices, but any time he connects he is receiving the error message.
He uses an access list so only he and his wife's computers can connect and deleted his iBook's MAC address, re-added it, restarted and still is receiving the error message.
He doesn't use any type of WEP or security, just the access list. Does anyone have any idea why this would just start happening? His other laptop (an iBook clamshell running OS9) is working just fine.
He's running 10.3.9 and is fully updated Thanks.

One possibility is that a neighbor or two has recently gone wireless recently. WiFi has had a huge surge of popularity just the past year. People tend to leave their base stations set to transmit on channel 6 as a default, which can result in interference. Try a different channel, like 1 or 11.

  • Unable to join Airport Network

I am being baffled by a network problem.
I have 2 Macs, a MBP 17 inch running Snow Leopard and an old Powerbook G4 running 10.4. Both connect to a no security (ie no password wireless) network at home. "Suddenly" the MBP will not join the wireless network (A DSL model D-Link). Error message when running diagnostics of "Unable to join Airport network.....". The G4 works just fine.
Have tried rebooting both devices ie the MBP and the D-Link. The MBP will work fine with a cable attached to the D-Link but not wirelessly!
Also, the MBP can see the Powerbook in the FINDER under "Shared".
    Any ideas?
    Thanks
    BF

Yeah, thanks Bob, I got my MBP Safari to talk to D-Link via the http://10.1.1.1 address, put in a WEP password. Saved the changes and restarted the router. When I connect via Airport it asks for a password - I type it in then it times out. Then I went to the Powerbook and the Vista machine and they connected fine. I used my iphone and told it the password and it also worked fine.
I prefixed it on my MBP with $ and without $ - all to no avail. I am starting to think maybe the MBP wants a WPA password for some reason. It worked fine until last night! Very strange indeed. Any more ideas?
What gets me is that one moment it works and the next it is dead as a dodo...

  • There was an error joining the network usr5450

    Hello,
my girlfriend today bought her first mac. An iMac 20" C2D.
She was uncertain about it because she's a long time windows user but in the end she decided to switch to osx, oh happy day.
At first boot there was immediately a problem. The iMac could see the wireless network (usr5450 access point) but when it tries connecting to it after 20 secs it gives this error message: "There was an error joining the network usr5450".
So we decided to skip the network setup it during first boot and to do it later inside osx with more options.
    NO WAY.
    I'm clueless.
The network is NOT protected by wep or wpa (her sister's new out of the box vista/vaio connected immediately...oh, the horror!) and I was able to connect with my macbook pro automatically.
Every computer in her house connect wirelessly without problems execpt her new iMac.
I run an hardware test. Passed without errors.
We installed Osx update combo 10.4.9 and AirPort Extreme Update 2007-002. No change.
The network is like that: modem-dlink switch-us robotics 5450 access point.
Please, she's already regretting buying a mac, any help would be very appreciated.
    Thanks

    Welcome to Discussions, Riell!
Check to see if there is a firmware update available for the router.
The "there was an error" message you saw usually indicates something in the combination of the password and security method selected was not entered accurately or could not be accepted for some reason.
First, turn on AirPort using its menu bar icon.
Then open the Network panel of System Preferences. Click the "Assist me..." button at the bottom and click the blue "Assistant..." button in the drop-down box. This will open the Network Setup Assistant. Click the "Continue" button, then target "I use AirPort" and continue on to setup this new "location" within your iMac's Network perferences. Does this work for you? If not, what message do you get, or where do you run into a roadblock?

  • Unable to join airport network - Totally perplexing

    Hi
I work remotely from home. I have an intel iMac as my desktop and a macbook for when I am out and about. For a few days now I have been having enormous problems with my internet connection. I use Airport Express (n) to connect via my modem in another room.
I cannot get any connection to the internet on my iMac, yet I connect fine on my Macbook sitting 6 inches from it, both using the same Express.
When I run network diagnostics on the Imac it goes through the usual checks, green buttons up to 'Internet' and then asks what network to join, scans and finds the network that my Macbook is on. I type in the password and I get an 'Unable to join Airport Network' Trust me the password is right and I have checked it via keychain.
I am completely perplexed why two computers using the same wifi settings a few days have changed where only one can.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks Jon

To rule out wireless encryption, if you temporarily disable encryption on your 802.11n AirPort Express Base Station's (AXn) wireless network, can the iMac connect now? If so, try using WPA2 Personal for your encryption setting and try again. How about now?

  • Error when attempting to join Airport Network

My iMac G4 17" flat panel has been unable to connect to my wireless Linksys router.
I recently did a software update which I hadn't done in some time, plus we finally got around to adding a WEP password as Comcast was telling me that's why we kept getting booted off the internet. Anyway, my iBook and two other PC notebooks can connect without a problem, but I can't get the iMac to join.
Sometimes it won't even find the base station. I don't understand why I get four bars on my iBook sitting right next to the iMac which can't even find the Linksys or the Airport Express I have 30 feet away connected to my stereo and printer. Is the antenna in the iMac that much differen than my first generation dual USB ibook?

I actually have this same problem, but with a pre-iSight iMac G5 17" 1.8ghz. In OS 10.3.9, there were no problems. After updating to Tiger, airport connection has been sporadic at best. VERY rarely, I can get a connection, but it's always weak and usually doesn't work, even if it says it's connected.
Usually, I try to connect and I get 'There was an error joining the __________ network.' And it prompts me to press 'ok' or 'try again'. Trying again does nothing.
I've gone through a lot trying to get this to work - and I currently am on 10.4.3 with the latest security update. I have 4 other computers in the house (3 different macs and a PC laptop) all of which are connecting fine. Any ideas on this? Any other information I should tell you?
    Thanks,
    Gabe

  • Why Error Occuring While Joining Airport Network?

I have an old iBook PowerPC 500MHz, running 10.3.9. A friend had been using it and I am trying to get it to see the Airport device. The icon along the menu bar is not highlighted. When I try to join my network and type in my password at first I got a dialog box saying something about the device or something had been changed and asked if I wanted to change something on the Keychain in order to access the Airport. I typed in my password and got a dialog box saying that there was a problem joining the network and asks for the password again.
I don't know if the iBook is actually seeing the Airport because the icon is not registering a signal at all, or if I'm simply having a problem with my password and/or Keychain. I am able to access the Internet via hard wire.
I just downloaded an Apple Security Update, is it possible that I should not be running 10.3.9?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Regarding not broadcasting the SSID, that sounds like a decent method of security for where I live in the boonies of Oregon.
    Not really now considered secure.
Should I close my wireless network?
    http://www.ifelix.co.uk/tech/1017.html
From what I understand, if I employ that method then the client (generally my wife) needs to know the name of the network. If they don't know the name of the network then they can't connect, right?
    That's the basics.
However the SSID is sent between clients and the base station even though the base station isn't broadcasting the SSID, and this can be picked up by someone sniffing your wireless network.
It will deter the casual user.

    Hello...
I´m having problems joining an airport network, i realy hope u guys can help me... I tried everything...

I enter the password (i´m sure it´s the correct one) and it keeps saying "there was an error joining the airport network "Blablabla".

    Thank u for your attencion...

One of the problems with WEP is that the actual standard relies on a 10 character HEX key for 40bit WEP and a 26 character HEX key for 128bit WEP.
In order to make things easier for people, vendors use certain algorithms to convert simple alphanumeric passwords (or passphrases) into HEX keys, thus enabling people to use simple memorable WEP password rather than lengthy HEX keys.
The problem is that different vendors use different algorithms to generate the HEX key and therefore a ASCII password on an AEBS will be hashed differently on a Netgear client and vice versa.
One thing is a 13 character 128 bit WEP password will be hashed by all vendors in the same way (if you use 40bit WEP then a 5 character password is required).
Though sometimes not even that works and the HEX key must be used regardless.

  • Mac Pro "error joining wireless network", G5 and iBook OK?

Trying to connect to internet via wireless. The airport recognizes my WPA Personal password but still show "Error joining network", the airport bar is full but cannot connect to internet. The Network Panel says:
"Airport is connected to the network. Airport has a self-assigned IP address and may not be able to connect to the internet"
Here's my setup, every firmware is up-to-date:
Mac Pro 2.66Ghz Dual Core Intel Xeon
    OSX 10.4.10
    Linksys BEFW11S4 V.4 (firmware 1.52.02)
Airport Extreme card (update to 2007-003)
    In Network panel:
    Airport- Automatic
    TCP/IP- Using DHCP
    PPPoE- no click
    Appletalk- active
    Proxies- manually
    In Sharing panel:
    Firewall- On
    Internet Sharing- Off
I am 100% sure that the router is working because we have a G5 (10.4.1) and a iBook (10.4.9) in the house and there's no problem for both devices, both takes the password and connect to the wireless network no problem.
And one thing, when I go to the setup page of the router (192.168.1.1) and disable the WPA password security, the Mac Pro works perfectly. So whats the problem? It doesn't recognize the WPA?
Mac Pro 2.66Ghz Dual Core Intel Xeon Mac OS X (10.4.10)
Mac Pro 2.66Ghz Dual Core Intel Xeon   Mac OS X (10.4.10)

First question:  Is there a wireless card installed?  It was optional on a 3,1.
Go to System Preferences - Network and see if you have AirPort listed on the left. It also may be turned off which you can fix there.

  • MacBook Error Joining Open Network

A friend bought the new MacBook Core 2 Duo last week. He has been able to access the internet over Airport everywhere he's taken it, but not at home.
At home he has a 2Wire Homeportal with ATT/SBC Yahoo DSL. WEP was originally on, but after numerous attempts to get it to work, we turned the encryption off.
After that, he got online okay for awhile, but after he used another network, his home network still showed up in the Airport menu, but when he clicks on it, it gives him an error joining message.
I've searched through the forums and am mostly seeing problems with WEP, but that's off now... is there anything we can try? (We've reset the modem, the computer, moved some airport preference files, changed some airport settings in the Network control panel).
He's brand new to the Mac and doesn't understand why his old Windows computer has no problem using the network but his new MacBook can't.

    Try the following:
    Delete Preferred Network(s)
    - System Preferences > Network > AirPort > Configure
    - In the "By default, join:" pull-down menu, select "Preferred networks"
    - Delete the network(s) you regularly use from the list
    Delete AirPort Keychain Entries
    - Launch the "Keychain Access" application located in Applications/Utilties.
    - Click on the "Kind" filter at the top, and look for any "AirPort network password" entries...and delete them.
    - Restart, or log out then back in.
    Add Preferred Network(s)
    - System Preferences > Network > AirPort > Configure
    - In the "By default, join:" pull-down menu, select "Preferred networks"
    - Add the preferred network(s) using the "+" button.
    - Restart or log out then back in.

  • MacBook will not join Airport network

I am flummoxed. My MacBook will not join my Airport Extreme network. It was fine this morning. I have restarted the MacBook. I have restarted the Airport base station. My iPhone is connecting to the network fine. My TV is connecting to the network fine. My G4 is connecting to the network fine. So, it appears there is some issue with the MacBook itself. Any ideas what could be the issue?

First, either update your profile or your OS to 10.5.6. There have been many bug fixes since 10.5.2 and some WiFi updates require the latest Leopard version.
That being said, check your network preferences.
Do you have a rational IP Address?
If you are using an encrypted WiFi, you can temporarily turn off the encryption and see if the MB can join the network. If so, it's an encryption issue. If not, turn the encryption back on and we will have to look elsewhere.
BTW, you should be using WPA since WEP has long ago been compromised and is useless, but thats a side thing right now.
On the MB, I would run disk utility and repair permissions for starters.

  • On wake, Error joining my network

Is this a keychain issue or an APE issue? When my Pismo wakes from sleep, my APE signal sometimes goes to 0, but the green light is on. If I manually try to join I get the "error joining network." Normally it joins automatically. (APE v6.2) Have to reboot the APE base station. This happens usually one to three times a day. I might wake it up... ohhhh.... eight times a day.

It's already set up to automatically join the network. The problem is that it occasionally refuses to join on wake. It seems like it might be an issue with the WEP key. I have to reboot the APE to get it to accept any machines with the WEP key. Thanks though.

  • PB G4 17 doesn't automatically join AirPort network

When I log out my user account or shut down the computer, once I fire it up again I have to manually select the AirPort symbol at the top of the screen (which is now grayed out) and select my household Air Port network. Once I do all is well until the next time I log out or shut down. Normal sleep and screensaver activity don't affect this, only shutdown or user log out.
It didn't used to do this. It started suddenly a few months ago, and I thought the upgrade to Tiger would fix it, but it hasn't.
What gives, and how do I fix it?
    Thanks in advance.
    RWW

Robert, you can try adjusting the Network settings to join automatically.
Open System Preferences. Open Network Settings. You should see Network Status by default. Click the bar stating Network Status and choose AirPort. Make the AirPort Tab is highlighted.
You'll now see your AirPort ID number and a line below it saying
By default, join: and a pop up bar.
Via the pop up bar, make sure you have identified your Network correctly under Preferred networks or even better choose Automatic. Also, choose the Options button at the lower left and make sure the settings are correct for your setup. You should click to select Enable interference robustness this will help with the overall connection too.
    Good luck.

  • How do I get Mac to join Airport network on startup?

I have been using my Airport with Panther for years. On startup, it always connected to the Airport and the black bars appeared in the menubar. After upgrading to Tiger, the bars are greyed out on startup and I have to click on the Network name in the drop-down menu to connect. I have upgraded my software to no avail. I have also clicked on what I think are all the right choices in the Network section of System Prefs. Is there something simple that I am overlooking? Do I have to insert something into Startup Items or what? Thanks for any help.
