Error joining selected wireless network

the airport extreme was working fine for a couple of years until few days ago. i have not been using it since then because i can't, for some reasons.
i tried hard resetting it (the little button at the back of the airport extreme) and re-install the software (from the CD)
keep getting this message that "an error occurred joining the selected network"
please help as i'm getting frustrated..
and oh, i have updated all the required updates.
/Users/oliviajap/Desktop/Picture 1.jpg
/Users/oliviajap/Desktop/Picture 2.jpg
now, it won't even show a picture of my airport extreme..
please please help.. thanks

Thank you very much for your help.
Thanks to your advice I was able to get contact with and seemingly successful initiate the AirPort Extreme again. It seems the connection of the ethernet cable made the difference. But the Airport does not yet function properly. When I unplug the ethernet cable I cannot connect to the internet. When I select my network in the menu bar, the Airport sign "radiates" for some seconds, but no connection is made.
Any suggestion how to solve this is much welcome.

I would say that you would want to look into the "Exchange Mode" for GMail.  That would allow your iPhone to sync calendars, contacts and email with GMail just fine.  Doing the same with your outlook should also then sync those same with your PC using Outlook.  I've done teh iPhone side of this, but I since I don't run Lookout for my email client, I'm not sure how that will work on the PC side.

  • "there was a problem re-joining the wireless network or finding the device"

I get this error when trying to have my Airport (for wireless printer sharing) join my current O2 Broadband wireless network:
*AirPort Utility was unable to find your Apple wireless device after restarting.*
*The settings for this Apple wireless device have been successfully updated, but there was a problem re-joining the wireless network or finding the Apple wireless device. You may need to select your network from the AirPort menu and try again.*
Anyone have any idea how to fix this?

This has been a total joke...Same problems as many here and zero response from Apple! I've had an AX for 3 years or so and it has worked fine, that is until it dropped its connection 2 days ago. I went to reset and the utility prompted me to do some updates...then magically it all went down the tubes!
*"The settings for this Apple wireless device have been successfully updated, but there was a problem re-joining the wireless network or finding the Apple wireless device. You may need to select your network from the AirPort menu and try again."*...look familiar? Well, I tried everything including the many possible fixes listed here at the discussions...and of coarse NOTHING. I decided that maybe it had just out-lived itself and bought a brand new AX yesterday...funny SAME PROBLEM. Now all the tinkering is affecting my network. I returned the new AX today, and surprise the people at the Apple Store had never heard of the issues, let alone have idea of what to do next! VERY MAD!
Any new solutions would be great! THX.

  • There was an error joining the Airport network

Re: error joining the Airport Network
My wife and I bought two new Macbooks at Best Buy on December 28, 2006. On the first day, I set them both up to work with our 2WIRE wireless router, and they both worked flawlessly.
However, on January 27, 2007, my wife started her MacBook, tried to select the wireless router in the Airport drop down menu (like she always has done before with no problem), and received the following error message:
"There was an error joining the Airport network "2WIRE229"
After several unsuccessful attempts to fix this problem by restarting and reconnecting, I did some research on the internet and came across the following discussions from other people who have experienced exactly the same problem:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=3815739

I am having the same problem. I have an access point in my living room and a homework desk in my bedroom. My desk is maybe thirty feet from the access point through one wall. The desk does sit in front of a window. When I try to use my PowerBook at my homework desk I can, intermittently, pick up three access points: mine and two others. The two others are on the same channel as each other, but that should not be interfering with my access point and certainly shouldn't be causing it to disappear from the list all together.
Hoping that my signal just wasn't reaching well enough (the antenna on the AP was not very prominent) I bought a 6dBi antenna for it. My PowerBook has always worked in the living room and certainly works there now. I do get a much stronger signal in my bedroom but I still can't use the laptop on my homework desk.
What doesn't make any sense in all of this is that the wall in my room with the window is the same wall in the living room where there is a large sliding glass door. So, if the interfering signal is coming from outside it should be affecting the living room as well. I am at my wits end on this one.

  • Error joining the AirPort Network - revisited

I just got my iBook back from the shop and am trying to reestablish the link with my Airport Express. I've reset the unit, gone through numerous hoops.
The AirPort Express currently has a green light, and my router shows it's connected. Yet, when I try to connect, or try to reconfigure, I get the message "There was an error joining the AirPort network "Apple Network xxxxxx""
I have no idea what firmware is on the unit, nor do I have the means to update the firmware if needed (as I cannot get a connection to it).
Yes, I have a good internet connection. I'm posting this on an older iBook ... which is not AirPort ready.
    Thanks in advance!
Note ... This topic came up in June (2006) ... and is archived, yet unanswered.

    Ciao all.
I'll tack onto this thread rather than starting a new one. It sounds like similar-ish territory.
We've had Airport Express for about three weeks after our Airport Extreme gave up the ghost after 14 months. We have a DSL modem connected to Airport Express, and three computers - eMac, iBook G4 and Powerbook G4 - connected wirelessly. Or we did, until tonight.
On the eMac, I lost my wireless connection. The Airport symbol was still black, and full strength, but my time connected stats disappeared. At the same time, my wife had the same thing happen on her Powerbook. Then the Airport symbol grayed out. As did the Powerbook. I fired up the iBook and the same thing was happening.
Briefly, for a couple of seconds, the Airport symbol would return to black, with, on a couple of occasions, the time connected stats reappearing. We would be connected again. Then the symbol would gray out again.
And the network name would have disappeared from the Airport menu.
If I turned off Airport and turned it on again, the symbol would be greyed out, but the network name would be there. Only, when I tried to connect, I would get the dreaded An Error Occurred Joining The Selected Wireless Network.
And I couldn't access the Airport Express via either Set Up or Admin.
I rest the Airport Express back to factory settings. The Airport symbol remained greyed out, but the Apple default wireless network was visible in the Airport menu. But I would still get the dreaded An Error Occurred, etc message.
Through Airport Set up, I was able to detect the Airport Express' default name and even the network name, but still wasn't able to connect to it.
Trying again, I was told that no new Airport networks could be found.
I've had basically the same results trying all three computers.
In terms of lights, the Express will sit there with a solid green light through all these shenanigans.
The internet connection is solid. Plugging the modem straight into the computer puts me online.
Do we have - as I fear - a lemon of an Airport Express after three weeks?
Hopefully someone can ... help us ...
    TIA

  • Error joining airport to network

    Hi,
I have a wireless nortel solution set up in our school. We run power over ethernet base unit 2330a access points running back to 5520 POE switch. That runs back to a 2380 security switch. We have the latest firmware.
All our dell xp systems connect with no problem using WPA secured SSID. We also can connect with an open SSID.
All of our macbook's do not. They sometimes do connect, but 90% of the time will not. When i try and select it gives me an error that there was an error joining airport to network "WPCSD"
I have tried everything. This even happens when the system is brand new right out of the box. It happens in 10.4.8 all the way through 10.4.10 with all updates.
Strange, but when i go into xp on our duel boot macs, (same system) there are no problems.
I spoke to apple support, they were not much help, claiming it must be Nortel's problem.
I tried to find an external usb network adapter. I figured if i can connect with that then it must be the airport extreme. I had no luck, all seemed to be made for xp.
Is anyone out there rinning on a nortel wireless solution?
Has anyone had any issues with their macbooks and wireless.
I need out 100 new systems to connect.
    THANKS!

Yes hard wired i have no issues. I have tried the wireless with both DHCP and with static ip. Sharing seems to work. I can connect to another mac.
I have searched Nortel and googled. No luck. We are dealing with thier support. The feel if the xp systems can connect, then the system is fine.
Apple claims that if i can connect to other networks (ie home linksys) then the problem is nortel. see where this is going.
However that does not help me out. The nortel is a very expensive wireless solution, as you can expect. So its not like we can just get rid of it and buy a non-managed solution.
even if we bought external card for the macs that would be a solution, but it does not seem like these are even made.
i was just posting to see if anyone else is using a managed wireless solution like nortel's?
    thanks

  • Airport Extreme - Cannot join a wireless network

I just purchased the Airport Extreme and cannot get it to find a wireless network. In the Airport Utility I receive the following messages, "Joining a wireless network….An error occurred joining the selected wireless network.". I cannot proceed past this point. When I select "manual" configure I get the same error message. I've tried repeatedly disconnecting the cable & power from the modem and the airport extreme and then restarting but nothing happens. Any advice would be appreciated!

If you have a cable modem, you will need to power it off for at least 15-20 minutes and pull the battery if is has one as it is remembering the last device (probably your computer) that is was connected to. Power it back up after 20 minutes and connect the ethernet cable to the WAN port on the AEBS.
Suggest you do a factory default reset to clear the corrupted settings and start over again on the AEBS
    Power down the AEBS
Hold in the reset button +and keep holding it in+ as you plug the power back in
Release the reset button after approximately 8-10 seconds
Temporarily, connect an ethernet cable from your computer to one of the LAN <-> ports on the AEBS to help AirPort Utility connect with the device.
You will be configuring the AEBS to "Share a public IP address" and "create a wireless network. The guided setup will step you through.

  • Error joining the airport network "..."

On Thursday I updated my software (including, I think, a security update) immediately after restarting, my wireless connection stopped working and I got the error message "error joining the airport network...". After several hours on the phone to apple it worked for about five minutes and several more hours on phone to apple later it is still not working and they have told me to take it to be repaired suggesting its the airport card. I am reluctant to accept this, finding the coincidence of it stopping working immediately after the update too much to believe.
I have deleted the keychain things, deleted a plist folder, taken off the security on the network, started and restarted everything millions of times (including doing a 'safe' restart)
I have the router configured manually to 192.168.0.2 and 192.168.0.1
Does anyone have any other ideas about what I can do to get back on wireless?
Very grateful for idiot proof type answers!

I AM SUFFERING A SIMILAR PROBLEM ! and this website is driving me mad, i cant even find the "make a new post" link, so i am writing my problem in here !
A few months ago i bought Airport Extreme card for my desktop mac... I use it to pick up a wireless network, only, the last few weeks, it cant seem to find this network, even when my friends laptop is right next to it, and picking up the wireless !
It doesnt seem strong enough to detect it...
It is airport extreme 3.4 , and yes, i have mac OS X 10.3.5
Whats going on ?? I need internet !

  • There was an error joining the airport network "2WIRE532"

I just got my mac back from getting fixed for harddrive problems and now I'm trying to connect to the internet. Before I'd have some problems with losing connectivity but I always could connect. Now as I'm trying to connect to my wireless access point under the list of airport networks, it literally, right after I type in the WEP password, gives me the error message There was an error joining the airport network "2WIRE532". It looks like it doesn't even try to connect as fast as it does it. I need to know what's happening, I really want this mac mini networked to my network on my windows xp os computer.

I'm having the same problem. The only thing that was different was that we installed a new update from Apple for Quicktime.... then the next day it kept asking for a password (it didn't before) and then when it was entered, it gave me the same error message just a different network name.

  • There was an error joining the Airport network with WEP or WPA

I use a wireless adsl modem router (Philips). I can only connect via wireless to this router without encryption.
As soon as I use WEP or WPA encryption, I get the error message "There was an error joining the Airport network".
    Thank you for any suggestion.

Do not overlook the possibility that the router itself may be incompatible or may require a firmware update to work properly. You should configure the router to use WPA2, preferably, as this is the most compatible form of encryption with Airports.

  • There was an error joining the Airport network "NameOfTheNetwork"

    Hi there
I am French in London for an internship. I took a flat to share with an other girl. My father advised me to take a Mac for my specific utilisation (internet, music, movies...) and Macs are so cool exept for internet in my case. It doesn't work at all. The network of my landlord is hidden. So, I go in "other", I type manually the network name and the WEP password... Always the same message : There was an error joining the Airport network "NameOfTheNetwork". I tried several times with always the unlucky result.
My landlord said that there wasn't this kind of problem with her other flatmates before me...
I am pratically sure that the problem doesn't comme from my Mac because I reached to join an unprotected other network which appear sometimes (but the signal is not enought strong).
Is there an incompatibility between my Mac and the setup Network? And what do I have to to do to fix it?
I visited a lot of forums but :
1-I didn't find any topics on my specific problem
2-There explanations (when the topic is closed to my issue) are not clear and seem not to correspond to my issue.
Is there someone who can help me please? I really need internet!!!!!
    Emma

This confirms it is a WEP issue.
You will need to find the HEX key.
One of the problems with WEP is that the actual standard relies on a 10 character HEX key for 40bit WEP and a 26 character HEX key for 128bit WEP.
In order to make things easier for people, vendors use certain algorithms to convert simple alphanumeric passwords (or passphrases) into HEX keys, thus enabling people to use simple memorable WEP password rather than lengthy HEX keys.
The problem is that different vendors use different algorithms to generate the HEX key and therefore a ASCII password on an AEBS will be hashed differently on a Netgear client and vice versa.
One thing is a 13 character 128 bit WEP password will be hashed by all vendors in the same way (if you use 40bit WEP then a 5 character password is required).
Though sometimes not even that works and the HEX key must be used regardless.

  • IBook - error joining the Airport Network

Sorry for the repost but I wasn't sure if me accidently hitting the Correct Answer button would have effected getting a reply
Excuse my ignorance but I've never had a Mac. I recently got this from a friend and I'm having trouble getting it to connect to my WiFi. I've tried everything I could find on google, but nothing has worked. I've made sure my router isn't filtering Mac addresses, I've tried the $ fix, I've removed and changed my security preferences mutiple times, and I'm out of things to try. It works fine when it's connected to the modem directly, but wireless just won't connect. Every time I try I get the error joining the Airport network "xxxxx" but the computer I'm using to type this is connected just fine. Any help would be much appreciated!!
    I belive it's a

I really know nothing about Macs so I don't know how to tell which one of those it is

    Memory 384 MB SDRAM
    Machine Model PowerBook4,3
    CPU Type PowerPC 750 (2.3)

Right now I have my old ibokk g4 runing OS10.4.11 I'm going to go through the setup on airport using it.I am in system preferences- network. Airport is on and shows in the top menu bar of the desktop.Under show in nework preferences click on network status and then airport. Go to options open and check automaticly join open networks. Click ok. Go to proxies and click. Make sure use passive ftp mode is checked. Go back up and click on the airport bar.  Under by default join-click prefered network. You should now have a window showing all networks available.Click on the one that represents your router and apply. If you network is password protected you will need to inter the password. If this does not work use the assit me option . You can run diagnostics to see if it picks up your network or you can run the assistant. It will ask you to name the network. then continue and check on airport then you will get abox that should show your router and you'll need the password for it. And thenclick apply. You can also get help in network  by clicking the little ?

  • Join a wireless network with Vista

I am having a problem to make the AE to work with my existing network. I have a wireless network that I set up ("ad hoc") to acces the internet with my laptop - the modem is installe in the desktop.
I am trynig to make the AE to enter in this existing wireless network but I can't! When I select "join a wireless network" I expect to have in the "Network Name" box my netnork name but it doesn't appear! Then I type the name and the password of my network, I update the AE then.... nothing! Dead!
The wireless network I have set keeps working but the AE doesn't enter in the network.
Am I doing anything wrong? Any tip will be useful!
    Thanks in advance.

    /Nairo

First of all thanks for the posting!
Yes, when the AE is "blank" I can see it in both computers (strong signal), the desktop and the laptop. And it is constant green. Then I enter the Utility software and again everything is fine. It allows me to make all the configuration then when I update... boing!!! It dies. My "ad hoc" network continues working but the AE is dead. No signal! Then I go again there, make a reset, and the AE is back to live.
I guees there is something wrong with the way I want to use it, I mean, I want the AE to enter my existing network (WEP-128 bits). I give all the directions (SSID and Password) correctly but once it is updated with the info it doens't respond anymore.
I tried it many times and nothing. Now I am trying to create another network (WAP) and try again to configure the AE.
    Thanks for your help.

I am using AirPort Utility v5.6 on OS X Mountain Lion. This option becomes available ONLY by holding down the Option key before making a Wireless Mode selection. This was true before the upgrade.
