Error linking Illustrator file to Indesign file

I am working on a flyer (in InDesign) and I am trying to link 2 different illustrator map files to it. One is a illustrator map (on one artboard) and it links perfectly. The problem is with the second illustrator map file. It has 4 artboards (but I only want to use a map on artboard 3). Is it possible to link a illustrator file (with multiple artboards) and only show a certain board in my indesign file? I keep getting a error message.
thanks

You may have to reset the preferences of either InDesign or Illustrator. There could be corruption in either application:
Here are directions for restoring InDesign preferences:
http://forums.adobe.com/thread/526990
Here are directions for Illustrator preferences:
Quit the application. Launch Illustrator and IMMEDIATELY hold down Ctrl + Alt + Shift (Windows) or Command + Option + Shift (Macintosh). You’ll receive no prompt, and the program will open as usual.
Alternatively, quit the program and search for the “Adobe Illustrator [version] Settings” folder and delete it. Insert the version (for example, CS5) in the search string.

  • InDesign CS3 crashes without error when opening any 2nd InDesign file

Issue: InDesign CS3 crashes without error and remains resident in memory if we have an InDesign file open and attempt to open a second InDesign file.
    OS: Win XP SP2
    InDesign Version: 5.0.2
Hardware: Dell Precision WorkStation T3400, 4 gigabytes of memory, Intel Core2 Quad processor Q6600
Details: No messages in the event viewer about the problem. We renamed the InDesign Defaults and the InDesign Saved Data file. We removed Creative Suite, restarted and then reinstalled Creative Suite (I could not remove and reinstall InDesign individually). We have created a new Windows profile for this user. I have one computer having the trouble. Other InDesign installations are working fine. This computer has 559 files in C:\windows\fonts. Other people that are not having the problem have a larger number of fonts installed.
The issue is not file specific. We are not running out of memory as I checked the task manager after the first InDesign document is open.
Why is opening a second document different than opening the first document?

    Hello Peter and Josh,
I'd just like to assert that I am having the exact same problem as Josh. I've spent the time to go through the steps listed above and have found the same results.
The issue as we see it multiple times daily is as follows:
    (1) User opens File1 (everything works fine)
    (2) User goes to open File2 (via explorer or via file->open) or print File1
    (3) The User Interface for ID disappears (InDesign.exe still appears in Task Manager and is NOT listed as "Not Responding", ID does not appear in the Task Bar)
    (4) The only way to continue work is to End Task/End Process InDesign.exe and relaunch.
No error messages appear, no error logs are created(that I can find). Non-related concerns caused us to upgrade this users PC. With a completely new install we are still having the problems. The systems are listed as follows:
OS: Win XP SP2 (fully updated minus SP3)
    InDesign Version: 5.0.2
Newest Hardware: Custom Built Computer, 4GB RAM installed (3.24 recognized by windows), Intel Core2 Quad processor Q6600 @ 2.4Ghz
OS: Win XP SP2 (fully updated minus SP3)
    InDesign Version: 5.0.2
Older Hardware: Custom Built Computer, Intel D945GTP Motherboard, 2GB RAM installed, Intel Pentium D processor @ 2.8Ghz
    Troubleshooting:
    (1) Alt+Space and M then using arrow keys moves every other window the user had opened other than In-Design. The user has two monitors. (a) 1280x1024 and (b) 1200x1600 (yes she uses the monitor rotated 90 degrees
    (2) Log files - Non exist in the C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe InDesign CS3 folder. I've also done a search across the entire hard drive for any "*.log" files, none of which were adobe related.
    (3) Default Printer - Changing the default printer to Adobe PDF is not really an option. I was able to convince the user to temporarily switch to a different networked printer and await the results (most likely today or tomorrow it should recreate)
    (4) /3GB switch - Getting that last 700 something MB of memory isn't an issue. I've run MemTest.exe on all the available system memory overnight in a "burn in" test. The system ran fine the sticks were nice and warm when I got in from all the hard work :)
    (5) Order of Opening - The problem repeates regardless of order. The trick seems to be opening File2 or printing File1 (I had the user only work on one file at a time (required her to close any open files before opening the next, that wasn't fun for my user but the system didn't crash on opening in this scenario, just on printing. Obviously not a permanent work around)
Any help here would be much appreciated as this has been plaguing us for months now.

Yeah, sure, swearing will help you.
Instead rather give important information, unless you just came here to complain and not wanting to ask for help.
    1. What error?
    2. Where is the file saved - local HDD or network?
    3. Will "Save as..." work?
    4. When closing ID and opening again, it should restore the files (data loss due to crash prevention) - will you then be able to save?

  • Error linking the CoreServices.Framework header files under CS5

    Hello All,
I am porting my InDesign CS4 plugin into Indesign CS5. In this project I have used Soap connection services by using OpenTransport.h file and other files from the Coreservices framework headers.
It works fine with CS4 if I give the Path to the framework folder from the SDKs. But same if I try to do while porting into CS5 with MacOs 10.5sdk it give error and does not include the file.
I am using XCode 3.1.3 on Mac OS 10.5. Has anyone face this problem and resolved the same. If so please let me know.
    Thanks all in advance.
    Regards
    Farzana.

the php in 10.5 uses extensions, you do not need to rebuild php to get mssql to work..
    Take a look at http://downloads.topicdesk.com/docs/AddingGD2_to_PHP_on_OS_X_Server_10_5Leopard.pdf
as you can see in that example GD is built separately, mssql is the same.. do a google search on mssql.so and you will find a bunch of info (most of it is for linux but you should be able to get the info to work)

  • Resizing and conversion of Multi Ad Creator files to InDesign files

    Hi all
I am really out of my depth here! Hope someone can help me...
I am part of a project at my company to investigate the quickest and easiest way to open Multi Ad files and resize them, including resizing the content to fit. The size change is only a width change but we have thousands, possibly hundreds of thousands, of files that would need to be resized. I believe we will only need to change the files as we need them, not upgrade every file on our system. We are looking at upgrading our software at the same time, so the options we are looking at are going from our current versions of Multi Ad to the new version 8 Multi Ad, or ideally switching over to InDesign CS6.
We've been researching a way to convert .muad files to .indd files but the below process is the only way we can seem to get it to open. Manual resizing (or possible use of liquid layout) is what we could do to update the sizes, but if this can be automated to would be amazing.
    Currently...
Open previously created MultiAd EPS file in Distiller/Acrobat (set with a PDF profile to match Ad Production).
Open PDF in InDesign CS6 using Markzware plugin (to make the PDF editable in InDesign).
Artwork opens and then links fix themselves and if required, ad resized to new four column size…. There are multiple old and new sizes so there will need to be some input from the operator to tell the script which size we are changing to.
I am wondering if it's possible to use an AppleScript to do this for us? I haven't used it before and wouldn't know where to start in writing one. It will be complicated as we not only have to tell Multi Ad to create EPS's then distill/PDF them in Distiller/Acrobat with particular profiles, then tell InDesign to use a plugin to open the PDF's to make them editable native files, and THEN ask InDesign to relink the images, resize the document as well as resizing artwork proportionally to fit.
This would be our ideal world. Alternatively is to keep with Multi Ad and write a script to open the old files into the new version, and resize. (But I want InDesign!). A third alternative is to have a script to open the MultiAd EPS files in Illustrator but is a poor choice i believe for a page layout program.
Any ideas or input would be fantastic, I am a designer so am not that great with the technical side of things.
    Thanks all!

    Hello,
I am working on a similiar project. Except I am working with Creator 7 and moving toward InDesign CS5.
We are unable to use the plugin.  I am writing the whole thing in applescript to iterate through the ads and bring them to InDesign...  I wish we could use the plugin, but it won't run on our OS.
To get you started--- Export EPS file from Creator:
set outFold to (("/Users/ME/Desktop/Proofs/In" as POSIX file) as alias) as string
--set outFold to (choose folder with prompt "Where should the EPS files be exported to?") as string
    tell application "MultiAd Creator Pro"
    activate
---This takes the name of the document and pulls out what is the ad number for us  ---change it as needed
set nams to (name of document 1)
    set AppleScript's text item delimiters to {" "}
set nams to text item 1 of nams
    set AppleScript's text item delimiters to {""}
    set nam to ""
repeat with g from 1 to length of nams
if g is not 1 then
if g is not 2 then
set nam to nam & character g of nams
      end if
      end if
    end repeat
--we have the name... now add the extension
set nam to nam & ".eps"
    --Export it:
    with timeout of 3600 seconds
export EPS spread 1 of document 1 saving in ((outFold) & nam) font inclusion all fonts
    end timeout
    close document 1 with saving
    end tell
Distiller is monitoring the 'In' folder and creates the PDFs when one is created.
I'm far from done with getting a working script to bring Creator to Indesign.... It has a good deal of problems still. It's why I came to these forums in fact.
    Good Luck

  • Error when trying to open InDesign file

InDesign might have crashed when my document was open, I'm not sure. Now when I'm trying to open the file I get the message "Cannot open (name of file)". I tried opening it on a different computer, I tried changing the file name and nothing worked.
I tried taking a previous copy from my time machine, and it was the same. I've worked hours on this file, please tell me there's a way to restore it. Thanks so much.

Do you have any other "weirdly-named" InD files in that folder? If so, try deleting them. InD may be trying to open that "weird" temp file repeatedly and if it's corrupt, hence the message.
Just a thought as that's happened to me several times and I have to find those temp files and delete them in order to open the original for editing again.

  • Scaling linked Illustrator graphics in InDesign

    Hi there
I was under the impression that the original dimensions of an Illustrator graphic were of little significance when placed in InDesign, since InDesign recognises it as vector artwork (and shows it as a PDF file in the Links panel with no ppi values, and preflight checks show no problems). I'm having a hard time convincing my colleagues of this, however, and they insist on resizing the graphic in Illustrator before placing it in InDesign.
Are they being a bit silly, or am I mistaken here?
I'd appreciate any helpful information, and would be interested to hear in more depth exactly what's going on when the graphic is placed and how InDesign handles and resamples the information.

    Thanks for the quick response.
I'm aware of the scaling of strokes and styles that you mentioned, and I appreciate that sometimes (when working with type that needs to be consistent, for example) one would want to get it exactly right in Illustrator first. However, in the few instances I am thinking of we have been working with very simple illustrations that don't contain any type or strokes or styles that would be adversly affected by scaling.
My colleagues have been trained to select the content of the graphic and check in the control bar to see that it hasn't been scaled to more than 120 percent. If it has they get uneasy and do a resize in Illustrator (without paying any attention to styles etc., just a simple click and drag bigger). I rather use the Info panel to check the Actual and Effective ppi, and use the preflight to double check when I'm in doubt.
As I said, though, I'm having a hard time trying to convince them that the greater-than-120-percent scaling they're seeing is no cause for panic (with Illustrator graphics).

  • How to place InDesign files inside InDesign files w/bleed intact?

I'm placing InDesign working files inside another InDesign document that's a printer-provided template. Esentially, I've designed a multipage book and now need to put those pages with bleed into a larger, one page printer template. No trouble placing the files, but I'm not able to give any of my placed pages bleed. Any thoughts?
    Many thanks,
    Jim.

    Duh! Works perfectly.
    Thanks for the help!

  • Placing InDesign files into inDesign files

This is more a two-part workflow question to make sure I start off on a good footing.
I'm working with another person putting together a 40 page brochure that has 6 different sections formatted the same way, with some photos plus a cover.
I'm doing a good chunk of formatting the sections and then sending them to him so he can collate the whole thing with his sections, so that the printer will get a complete InDesign publication. He has a master page all set with the footer title and page number, and will copy my files over onto these.
He supplied me with some Paragraph styles but i had to tweak some of them due to client requests.
1.What would/is the best way to merge my files with his? He's Copying each page and pasting my files into his master page template?
-Can they just be inserted/placed as additional pages into his document? What's the easiest way?
    - He did this, and the text came in a little odd, with spaces and some odd formatting. It's creating a little more work and am wondering what to do to make this transition a little less painful as we near the end of a long project.
I sent him my document, told him to:
    - load my styles
    - in preferences, set baseline grid as I have it
(margins and columns are set exactly the same)
Once he pastes in my files, they should now align closely to the way I had them. I tried a test and it seemed to work.
One question, if the baseline grid is set as i had it in my documents, will the copy that he has on his own document files get altered by default when he changes the settings to those I had?
Any overview on this issue will be illuminating as always!
    Thanks,
    Julian

You'll make your life easier if you break down tasks and
responsibilities. It would be best if you could work independently on
separate chapters (and then put the chapters together using the Book
feature), but if you both have to work on all the files, it's important
that you duplicate style changes, maybe begin with a comprehensive
design sample that you both agree on, and then save your files from that
    one sample.
Very difficult to have two designers working on one book. Much better to
have one author hand everything off to one designer.

  • I want to remove some images from hard drive, how to tell they are linked to InDesign files?

Is there any way I can find out if the image is linked to an any InDesign file? I have a thousand .indd files on my hard drive, if I open one by one and see the links panel it would take me ages...

    Willi Adelberger wrote:
That's said, if you package all files from InDesign you don't get links to linked ai files. Although they are complete for the use in InDesign you might loose the editability of linked AI files if their links are lost. So it would be a good idea to package linked ai files too but this functionality is only available in the Cloud Versions from CS6 and CC, not in the permanent license.
    Wait...what?
Maybe I misunderstand the post, or I've missed something along the way, but I've been using InDesign since it was introduced, and I've never heard this before. I output packages using pre-CC versions all the time, and I've never experienced any link or editability breakage with .ai files, or any others for that matter. Can you clarify Willi? What am I missing?

  • Firefox 5.0.1 will not allow me to upload any files. I receive an error message, though I know the files are vaild.

Firefox 5.0.1 for Mac OS 10.6.8 is not allowing me to upload attachments. I get a pink band with the message "Files with errors will not be uploaded". When I click on the View Error link, it tells me "This file couldn't be added because it appears to be empty (0 bytes). " These are valid jpeg files that I have attached many times before, so I know there is no problem with the file. Also, Firefox has recently given me an error message about restarting in 32-bit mode to accommodate a plug-in. I have ticked the '32-bit" option in the Get Info window of the Firefox application.

I have been unable to drag and drop large files, even onto the Desktop, let alone onto my NAS - I get the dragged files freezing in the middle of the screen or I get the 'unable to copy / file in use' error.
Talking to Apple Support, they had me set up a new User, and then within that new account, the trouble went away. This pointed to the StartUp items being run in the original troublesome account,
I have deleted all of my 3rd Party programs and then installed them one by one until the problem came back, and in my case (Macbook Air 5,2 running 10.10.3 Yosemite) I found it was DropBox causing the conflict. I have DropBox running in the Menu Bar (top of screen) and disabling sync (bottom left corner) stopped the file copy problem. Try disabling DropBox sync is file copying is failing?

Can you select all Links in the Links Panel
Use the Flyout Menu on the top right of panel.
    Choose "Utilities>Copy Links to"

  • Linking Illustrator file to InDesign

If I link an Illustrator file into InDesign (to add some artwork to a book), then export the InDesign file to PDF to upload to a printing website, will it cause problems for the printing because of the linked Illustrator file?

The AI file, saved with PDF compatibility, includes a PDF.
Images of that file become images in the exported PDF.
Artwork and Text remain as it is.
If you use transparency effects and you reduce transparency upon export from InDesing it could be happen that artwork will be rasterized and exported as an image.
If you don’t use transparency effects or if you export without flattening transparency (like export as PDF/X-4) no artwork will be rasterized although the effects often are rasterized, but they have been rasterized in Illustrator before on the document raster effect settings you have chosen in Illustrator.
The best would be to give it a try and make a research on your exported PDFs with different settings.
