Error Message 1603

I’ve followed all the instructions to upgrade my ISScript Installer but I still get error message 1603, and can’t upgrade iTunes to v6. I also can’t purchase songs until I upgrade. You would think that Apple would take care of this asap. Once and for all, what’s going on, and how do I correct it? It looks like I’ll be buying my music elsewhere and playing MP3’s on my iPod.

hi James!
The install script engine on this machine is older than the version required to run this setup. If available, please run the latest version of ISScript.msi, or contact your support personnel for further assistance.
okay. checking on something further now. (i couldn't quite determine this from your original post.)
which InstallShield document advice did you implement?
was it:
Setup Is Unable To Find or Update ISScript.msi
... or:
Update to the Latest InstallShield Installation Engines
if it was the latter one, which version of the InstallShield Engine did you install?
love, b

I tried to update today and I have all the system requirements but while in the process iTunes gave me an error message 1603 saying it wasn't possible to restore or upgrade my OS. Now my phone is in a state of blankness. How do I get it back to its original state? Please Help!

  • Anybody recieve error message 1603 while restoring?

My iPhone has become frozen during the restore process... all I get is a yellow caution sign telling me connect to iTunes. When I do, following the restore application, i get the unknown error message 1603, and that the phone can't be restored. Anyone out there know what to do?

I allowed my iphone battery to fully discharge and upon recharging got the error message with a large exclamation mark “please connect to itunes”. When I connected to itunes I was told that the phone was in recovery mode and needed to be reloaded. Itunes went out and downloaded the new firmware and began the install process after I approved the input screen that said it would wipe out all my data. 1/3 of the way through the process I received a message box that told me the process had failed to restore the iphone for an unknown error (number 1603).
After looking online and calling ATT as well as Apple the best solution I received was to send the iphone in for replacement (i am 5 hours from an apple store). After fiddling around I have managed to solve the problem on my own.
After trying everything else with no results, I pulled the SIM card out of the iphone and plugged the iphone into my computer. Itunes then reloaded the software and firmware successfully. I then put the SIM card back in and synced it up with itunes and it asked me to confirm the resync. Afterwards it just worked fine.
    My iphone works again!

my ipad will not come on.  i tried to restore and get error message 1603, dont know how to take out itsw which it tells me to do.

    Error 1603
Follow the steps listed below for Error 1604. Also, discard the .ipsw file, open iTunes and attempt to download the update again. See the steps under Advanced Steps > Rename, move, or delete the iOS software file (.ipsw) below for file locations. If you do not want to remove the IPSW  in the original user, try restoring in a new administrator user. If the issue remains, Eliminate third-party security software conflicts.
    Error 1604
This error is often related to USB timing. Try changing USB ports, using a different dock connector to USB cable, and other available USB troubleshooting steps (troubleshooting USB connections. If you are using a dock, bypass it and connect directly to the white Apple USB dock connector cable. If the issue persists on a known-good computer, the device may need service.
If the issue is not resolved by USB isolation troubleshooting, and another computer is not available, try these steps to resolve the issue:
Connect the device to iTunes, confirm that the device is in Recovery Mode. If it's not in Recovery Mode, put it into Recovery Mode.
Restore and wait for the error.
    When prompted, click OK.
Close and reopen iTunes while the device remains connected.
The device should now be recognized in Recovery Mode again.
    Try to restore again.
If the steps above do not resolve the issue, try restoring using a known-good USB cable, computer, and network connection.

After reviewing the suggestions I shut down all my applications, rebooted the computer, restarted Acrobat X Standard and again tried to update with the same result. In addition, when I start Acrobat X after a reboot I am prompted to run Adobe Application Manager and then I have to enter the S/N for both Acrobat X and for the Acrobat 9 from which I upgraded to X. I am not sure about this particular error number. Looking it up in Windows Installer error messages, it says file in use, restart may be required. But I am not certain that it is a Windows installer error message.
It certainly is worth trying a restart.
I would also clear your temporary Internet files and re-download iTunes.
Also clear your temporary directory as that seems to be where the error occurred.
This article on trouble installing iTunes includes instructions for clearing the temp folder (towards the end of the page) and also other things to try.

  • Error message 1603 during phone restoration

how do i restore my phone if I keep getting error msg 1603 when i try to restore it.

First, find and delete all .ipsw files on your computer. You will have to turn on show all hidden files and folders to see them. There should only be one, but delete all that you find. They are located here:
    Mac OS X
    ~/Library/iTunes/iPhone Software Updates
    Windows XP
    C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Software Updates
    Windows 7 and Vista
    C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Software Updates
Next, follow the directions here, make sure you turn off all anti-virus software & firewalls first:

  • UNKNOWN\ALT.REGISTRAR, install error message

When I try to install iTunes for Windows I receive the following error message “Could not open key: UNKNOWN\ALT.REGISTRAR. Make sure you have sufficient access to that key, or contact your support personal.” This is followed by another error message “-1603 fatal error during installation.” When I search the Registry I can find no such key. I’m thinking maybe this error is due to the fact that I’m using Internet Connection Sharing on the computer I’m installing it to, it is a Client of another computer that is the Host. Anyone have any suggestions?

... to be perfectly honest, i think you're probably a heck of a lot more technically competent than i am. so i think my advice is going to amount to feeding you possibly relevant articles.
my thought (based on what i've been able to find) is that the itunes install is choking on some part of the customised registry:
    The ATL Registry Component (Registrar)
... but what part, i'm not at all clear on. i can find one ATL-related bug that might be worth checking on:
BUG: ATL Registrar Code Does Not Handle DBCS Correctly
other possibilities ... are there any Group Policies in place that might be limiting your ability to install on the PC?

  • ITunes WILL NOT install-error messages 1714,1603

I have attempted to install Itunes (various builds) and keep receiving the same error messages...1714 (older version of ITunes can not be removed)immediately followed by error 1603.
I have read every message regarding installs and have attempted to install QT on its own and then attempt to install Itunes, (no dice), uninstall and remove all references to ITunes and QuickTime in the registry (still no soap) and also use Windows Installer Remover (AND STILL no results).
    I have a $400 IPod that I cannot use since I can't install Itunes.....any suggestions?

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.
The further information area has direct links to the current and recent builds in case you have problems downloading, need to revert to an older version or want to try the iTunes for Windows (64-bit - for older video cards) release as a workaround for installation or performance issues, or compatibility with QuickTime or third party software.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there are also links to backup and recovery advice should it be needed.
