Error message after web software update

Every time I do a software update of the OS on my intel macbook, and no matter what Apple decides to update on my computer, after I do the requested reboot, i immediately get a message onscreen that Norton Utilities has detected new software, and do i want it checked out to see if it is a virus.
Is this message from Apple? I ask this question, because i have not loaded Norton utilities into my system. Perhaps stranger, I can not actually locate norton utilities on my hard drive. I did a spotlight search on norton and came up empty. Then i tried a search on symantec, which i believe makes this software, and came up with a folder in my library/startupitems folder called NUMcompatibiltycheck. Inside the folder is a file of that same name, plus startupParameters.plist, and a folder called Resources which contains two files called infoplist.strings and localizable.strings
Obviously, I don't want to make a terrible mistake by trashing files that the system may need to run properly. Can someone out there tell me if NUMcompatibiltycheck is the source folder for my Norton Utilities message? If so, can i trash the whole folder, without affecting the OS? and is this something apple pre-loaded onto my computer as part of OS X 10.4?

thanks for your quick reply. I did what you recommend, specifically trashing that folder I mention in my previous post. It may be weeks before I upload any new apps to my two macs, which is the only time this message from Norton ever appears. But I do have a good feeling this will solve it. I thought I'd better ask before trashing anything in the library folder.

    Welcome to Apple's discussion groups.
I can't help with your issue as a general problem, but for the specific update to OS X 10.6.6, I'd download the updater directly from http://support.apple.downloads, then install it from the ".dmg" file. The specific links will be either
http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1349 for the "combo" update or
http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1343 for the update from OS X 10.6.5.

    Reset the device:
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button together for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
If that doesn't help, tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings
Then tap Settings > General > Software Update

  • DLL errors @ boot after Lenovo software update. (E530)

Hi, My laptop wanted to do a update of the Lenovo software so I let it.
Now every boot up it comes up with two error windows.
    DLL error's
How to get rid of this please?

Doing the first thing helped with the error messages a little bit. Also, editing the WPA networks allowed me to enter the passwords, which also helped a little with connecting when it wakes from sleep. I just ran software update again yesterday, and Apple now has an Airport Extreme update that addresses compatibility issues with WPA and WPA2 protected networks. However, I still had to reboot my router this morning to connect to the internet. Network diagnostics says that its connected to the network but may not be connected to the internet because it has a self-assigned IP address, and this most often occurs after a long period of being turned off or away from the home network connecting just fine on open networks.
The second thing, Applejack, sounds like a nice tool, but I'd prefer that this thing work the way it's supposed to, especially since it's only a few months old. Glad I bought Applecare.

  • Error message when using Software Update

Hi everyone. I'm getting the following error message when trying to download some items via Software Update:
"None of the checked updates could be saved. A networking error has occurred: Cannot open file (-3001). Make sure you can connect to the Internet, then try again."
This is for the following downloads:
    iPhoto 7.1.4
    iDVD 7.0.2
    iMovie 7.1.4
    Security Update 2008-005
Any ideas? I have no problems with Internet access at all. I'm running a new 24" Intel iMac 3.06 GHz with Mac OS 10.5.4
Thanks for any help you can provide.
    Bruce

    Hello b:
It sounds simplistic, but restart your computer if you have not already done so. I looked, but could not find that particular error code.

Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the page that opens.
Copy or drag – do not type – the line below into the window, then press return.
    defaults delete /Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate CatalogURL
    You can then quit Terminal.

  • I'm getting  an error message after completing an update.  Help?

I'm getting  an error message that says "This version of iTunes has not been correctly localized for this language.  Please try running the English version." after completing an update.  Help?

Thanks for your help! I imported the table into Muse, then exported the site as html and opened it in Dreamweaver. I should've tried that in the first place but gave up when I couldn't edit it in Muse. I didn't know you could edit the html right in Muse. Also, my styling and the images I was using weren't showing up in Muse but once I opened it in Dreamweaver, everything fell into place. AND I could edit it! My client needs to edit this page every week, so I needed to be sure she could do that. She doesn't use Muse but does use Dreamweaver. At this point, I think I'll leave it alone and not try to style it with inline css. Maybe when I get a little more time, I'll try it. I just don't want to mess things up now that the're working.

Since installing latest update 11.0.2.26, I am receiving error message:   An unknown error occurred (-42110)

Can anything be done?  What does it mean?  Am I better off just holding out until the next update and hope it fixes itself?
