Error message in Firefox

I am receiving the following message every time I try to open another window when using Firefox 'Firefox is already running but not responding. To open a new window you must first colse the existing Firefox process or restart your system.' This is becoming ridiculous and extremely time consuming. I have uninstalled and reinstalled Firefox but the problem remains. How do I resolve this? I will be sorry to abandon Firefox after many happy years of use but I will have to if thi9s problem persists.

I received the same message after updating my Java to 6 update 29, after FF crashed and I tried to bring it back up.
I logged off first, and then did the restart, and not only were my 2 Java plugins updated, but everything was fine.
Have you tried to restart your computer (maybe a dumb question, but I'm asking since I just went through the same message, after updating Java through a link, rather than through FF...wrong move, btw, I'll do it through FF next time).
Also, I open a blank tab and clear my cache periodically, if I start to slow down.
Another tip I picked up in the forums tonight, was to change the default as to memory that can be used. I have XP, so here is how I did it...clicked on tools, then options, then network and I was defaulted to 5 mbs. I changed it to 40 mbs, since I clean the cache alot and clean with CCleaner ALWAYS before I sign off the computer.
You can download CCleaner free..just search for CCleaner and download free via Pirifoam. I love it and have used it for years! It cleans all the crap, i.e. stuff left over when you uninstall a program; history, cookies & temp files from all browsers on your system and much more. It's great!
I have a older computer, so I clean diligently, plus keep the Windows updated manually (so I don't get updates I don't want), and defrag, etc.
I've just come back to FF, too. I kept getting these persistent cookies on IE, that my Norton AV would clear and BAM, the next time I uploaded IE (without doing anything on it) there they would be again, when I ran my AV! Also, Facebook has a nasty cookie that follows you all over the internet, AFTER you sign off. So I clean ALOT.
Good luck, I hope you can work it out and keep FF! :)
Donna
PS I wonder if you have remnants of the old installation left over, since you said you reinstalled FF. Try using CCleaner, as it will get rid of any remnants of uninstalled programs for you!

  • I am trying to log in to my MSN Hotmail e-mail account, and after entering my login info, I get the error message that Firefox cannot find the server. Why not?

When trying to log into my MSN Hotmail account (@msn.com), after I enter my credentials, Firefox gives me an error message that "Firefox can't find the server at blu152.mail.live.com". I am able to log in easily from the same computer using Internet Explorer. I think this problem just started yesterday. Why is Firefox unable to connect to my e-mail account?

Clear the cache and the cookies from websites that cause problems.
    "Clear the Cache":

  • After installing firefox version 31 I keep getting error messages that firefox cannot find some servers. How can this be fixed?

I use Ebates. Now when I go to Ebates and choose a store, then the transfer to store website comes up and then an error message that firefox cannot find the listed server. I keep getting that message alot.
On the frontier homepage there is an error message that firefox cannot find the ad server for yahoo.
I was having problems with firefox so I did a reset firefox and then installed the new version 31.
Seems it might be draggy or slow/sluggish. I like using Ebates. I contacted them and they said they were not having any issues at the moment. I contacted my antivirus provider and they said they could not detect anything either. Would a system restore get me back to the older version?

You can try these steps in case of issues with web pages:
You can reload web page(s) and bypass the cache to refresh possibly outdated or corrupted files.
*Hold down the Shift key and left-click the Reload button
    *Press "Ctrl + F5" or press "Ctrl + Shift + R" (Windows,Linux)
    *Press "Command + Shift + R" (Mac)
Clear the cache and remove cookies only from websites that cause problems.
    "Clear the Cache":
*Firefox/Tools > Options > Advanced > Network > Cached Web Content: "Clear Now"
"Remove Cookies" from sites causing problems:
*Firefox/Tools > Options > Privacy > "Use custom settings for history" > Cookies: "Show Cookies"
Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode|Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.
*Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
*Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window

  • Why do I get this error message /opt/firefox/run-mozilla.sh: 399: /opt/firefox/firefox-bin: not found

    kubuntu 10.04
    firefox 10.0.2
I downloaded and installed firefox 10.0.2 but when I...
    1. click the desktop icon nothing happens.
    2. use terminal mode and type firefox I get the following error message:
    /opt/firefox/run-mozilla.sh: 399: /opt/firefox/firefox-bin: not found
    How do I fix this?

In short, I used kpackagekit to uninstall firefox. Then used synaptic to uninstall firefox. After that I manually scanned the computer for residual DIRs. In the end, I noticed that I still had 3 DIRs containing firefox: /opt/firefox, /usr/lib/firefox-10.0.1, /usr/lib64/firefox-10.0.1
So removing firefox didn't work as expected.
As it turns out, the copy of firefox residing in /opt/firefox is v3.5.3, but I have a current version in /usr/lib and /usrlib64. For some reason the, new install didn't replace the copy in /opt/firefox and the /usr/bin scripts firefox and run-mozilla.sh point to /opt/firefox.
So when I use terminal mode and type firefox I get the cited error message. When I use my desktop icon it hangs.
My remedy for this was to due the following:
    1. track down the location of the desktop icon: /usr/share/applications/firefox.desktop
    2. edit the file: sudo pico /usr/share/applications/firefox.desktop
    3. modify entry to: EXEC=/usr/lib/firefox-10.0.1 /firefox.sh u% ( save and exit)
    4. modify terminal command: firefox
    5. track down the location of the firefox command: /usr/bin/firefox and /usr/bin/
    firefox.ubuntu
    6. remove symbolic link: rm /usr/bin/firefox
    7. remove symbolic link: rm /usr/bin/firefox
    8. create new symbolic link: ln -sT /usr/lib/firefox-10.0.1/firefox.sh firefox
    9. create new symbolic link: ln -sT /usr/lib/firefox-10.0.1/firefox.sh firefox.ubuntu
Everything works now as it should.
I believe the cause of this problem was related to the fact that the mozilla-team made a change to the location of their upgrade/update libraries which affected the entries in the file: /etc/apt/sources.list. When the ppa library location changed, my kubuntu version 10.04 didn't make this change and residual copies of firefox were left behind and DIRs /usr/bin and /opt/firefox were not modified.
Perhaps my experience will help others that tread this path.
Maybe somebody can explain to me why we need 3 DIRs for firefox: /opt/fire ; /usr/lib ; /usr/lib64

  • I'm getting an error message from Firefox that says, "Something is trying to trick Firefox into accepting an insecure update. Please contact your network provider and seek help."

I'm getting an error message from Firefox that says, "Something is trying to trick Firefox into accepting an insecure update. Please contact your network provider and seek help." Do you know what is going on here--what this problem could be? (I do have the latest Firefox version already installed. I have previously received Firefox error messages that say "Firefox Update Failed." However, I already had the latest Firefox version installed when I received those error messages.)

Apparently this occurs when Firefox has problems with security certificates. There have been a few questions about this. I will try to get advice about this.
Apparently you are using Internet Explorer 9 (From your system details). Do you have Google Updater plugin installed on Firefox ?
(That been implicated in this sort of problem by one poster, and some users with the problem do have Google Updater, but some do not)

  • I try to open Firefox. Get error message saying Firefox is already running and needs to close - another error message say Firefox can't open

Turned on laptop (rebooted) after being away from it for a few hours. Went to open my home page. Error message popped up saying Firefox is already running and must be closed. I closed it and another error message popped up saying Firefox can't open - incomplete or missing files.
I went into Processes to close Firefox. Selected 'end process' but nothing happened.
Tried to use Internet Explorer but it just gets hung up. Cannot access anything.
    And, because I can't open Firefox, I can't go a refresh.
Everything was working just fine a few hours ago.
    Any thoughts?

What is the computer system and Firefox on the bad computer?
    Separate Issue;
    Your System Details on this computer shows;

  • How can I stop getting the error message of firefox not being permitted into a website?

Okay so yesterday while on my school site trying to do work and access my course, this error message popped up saying either my internet connection is not good, which it is working, or that the website is busy but it wasn't so it had to be with my firewall and firefox. So I went to firefox website to see if I can fix it, I did what they said to do and to remove firefox from the list of programs I'm allowing in and then to allow it back in. And it didn't work. So i updated firefox and it worked perfectly.
Until today, I tried to access my course and it popped up with the same message. So I tried to do what I did yesterday with removing it from the list and allowing it back in but it didn't work. And firefox is up to date so I honestly don't know what else to do. Can you help?

Sounds like you were 'fixing' the firewall for Firefox access. If Firefox is working everywhere except your school website, I doubt if your issue is with the firewall.
Please provide a screenshot of that error message.

  • Getting an Error Message in Firefox?

If you're getting the following error message:
"A copy of Firefox is already open. Only one copy of Firefox can be open at a time."
    Here's the solution:
    Open the application "Terminal" (in your utilities folder) and type in the magic words below;
    /Applications/Firefox.app/Contents/MacOS/firefox-bin -profilemanager
(if your Firefox is in the Applications Folder; if not, change the beginning)
Create a new profile (might want to call it 'firefox profile') and start firefox!
    Good luck!

Your More system details list shows that you use Firefox 4:
    *Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; rv:2.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/4.0
Are you trying to (re)install Firefox 4 or do you get that error if you start Firefox?
    Do a clean (re-)install:
    * Download a fresh Firefox copy and save the file to the desktop.
    * Firefox 4.0: http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/all.html
    * Uninstall your current Firefox version and remove the Firefox program folder before installing that copy of the Firefox installer.
    * Don't remove personal data if you uninstall the current version.
    * It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.
Your bookmarks and other profile data are stored elsewhere (not in the Firefox program folder) and won't be affected by a reinstall, but make sure that you do not select to remove personal data if you uninstall Firefox.
If that still doesn't work then create a new profile as well.
See [[Basic Troubleshooting#Make_a_new_profile|Basic Troubleshooting&#58; Make a new profile]]
If that new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile (be careful not to copy corrupted files)

  • Everytime I click on the icon, I get an error message. Firefox doesn't even load. Any suggestions on how to fix this?

    Firefox won't open at all.
Error Meassage: Firefox had a problem and crashed. We'll try to restore your tabs and windows when it restarts. Unfortunately the crash reporter is unable to submit a crash report. Details: The application did not leave a crash dump file.
I've restarted my computer and I've tried a system restore. I've also unintstalled and reinstalled firefox.
Sometimes, I may get the crash report, but if I click Restart Firefox, that error message will just pop up.

  • I constantly get error messages that Firefox can't find a particular site.

I experience random trouble connecting with web sites using Firefox. The error message received is typically "Sorry, we can't find "www.xxx.com". Please check the spelling of the web address." I have cleared the cache and cookies, as well as checked the other settings recommended in the Help section. The problem still persists. It's pretty ridiculous when you can't connect to Yahoo! or YouTube.

A possible cause is security software (firewall) that blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.
Remove all rules for Firefox from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.
