Error message on my external hard drive.

I've got a WD Ext HDD 1021 2TB hard drive and use it with the Windows 7 back-up program.  I have to go in and manually delete back-up sets of files to keep availabel room on the hard drive.  I'm trying to delete soem back up sets and get the error message "Error 0x80070091: The directory is not empty" and the folder that I've chosen for deletion will not delete.  Can anyone tell me what this error means and what I need to do to delete the folders that I want to?  Thanks

Hello and welcome to the WD community.
I recommend doing a diagnostic on the drive to see if perhaps it could be an issue with file corruption. You can try this out see if it helps:

I have a Macbook pro 13" A1278. I purchased it around december 2010. I have a HHD 3.5" drive desktop select II 1.5TB. I purchased it around Febuary/March 2011 to use with my Macbook pro. I formatted it and moved all my files to there, I got it so my macbook's hard drive wouldn't brake and I lose everything on my macbook.
    Is there any fixes?

First, try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until the screen blacks out or you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."

  • Input/Output Error USB 2.0 External Hard Drive

I recently started having problems with an external hard drive setup that I did not have prior to trying to setup the drive to be compatible with Time Machine.
The hard drive enclosure that I have has 2 bays for two SATA drives. I have used this enclosure without any problems until I tried to get 1 drive to act as the backup drive for Time Machine and the other to be storage. I formatted them using Drive Genius. I used the option for GUILD or GUIL which it said was the better format for using with Time Machine.
The first problem I ran into since reformatting the drives is I got an "input/output" error the first couple times I connected the drive via USB to my Mac. I could still use the drives but I got weird errors every once in a while like "input/output error" or "device was not ejected properly" even though the device had not been unplugged.
Now the drives will not mount using OS 10.5.5. The drives show up when I open Disk Utility, but I cannot get them to mount. I have ran Disk Utility First Aid, and it says the drives are fine. There is one error that shows up when I run the "Repair Disk" feature. It reads "Invalid content in Journal". But Disk Utility also says "The volume was repaired successfully".
I have seen some posts when I do a search in google about this issue and it seems this is a known issue. Every suggestion I see says to insert your Tiger DVD and reformat the drive using that and the problem will be solved. The only problem with that is I have a lot of important files on the drive that I cannot lose. I had the files backed up until I moved them to the new drive a while back. Now I do not have a backup because I was in the process of switching to bigger drives and erased the old drives after doing so because everything was working fine.
I am hoping someone out there may have some suggestions (other than erasing the drive) to get my dives to mount so I can transfer the data off to another drive and reformat after.
    Thanks,
    Paul Rugg

I have similar problems with my USB external HD. Reformatting or repartitioning will not solve your problem. I've tried that 2 times already. The problem will reappear. My HD was running great until last month, when it suddenly without warning disappears from disk utility and the mac altogether. It not only dismounts itself, but also ejects itself, while still physically connected and the power is still on. The HD has its own power supply of course and is directly connected to one of the iMac USB ports. I have erased, repartitioned, disk verified, rebuild spotlight indexes, cleared PRAM and NVRAM, but nothing has solved the problem.
It is application independent, and not related to like iTunes as another post had suggested. Nothing to do with Mac applications. It seems to be USB related.
Messages in the Console seem to indicate something wrong with 'USB transactions passed their expiration point' and 'USB cannot enumerate something', but these statements are a bit cryptic to me. Perhaps an Apple system engineer can someday shed some light here.
    thanks much for any assistance.

  • Error message after installing external zip drive

After installing a replacement zip drive (and accompanying software from CD), I'm confronted with a periodic error message advising that hardware has not been closed properly disk ejected prior to removal? I'm not removing anything--the zip disk is remaining in the external drive. I've turned off all power, rebooted and reinserted USB connections and the error message keeps coming up periodically. Iomega web site isn't much help. An suggestions, please. Thanks.

Thanks for your quick reply!  I was wondering if anyone would reply!
I made the copies on a suggetion that the original may be scratched or something so I figured what the heck?  I did format the hard drive though.  It is a Seagate 500gb hard drive.  I only formatted the whole drive and figured that the restore disks would make the additional partition.
Aside from that, it's the same error message that I had on the original drive.  The original drive and OS works (Vista), but I wanted to restore it because I just wanted to wipe everything and start clean.  What can be causing the error message, and what IS the error message?
Anymore suggestions or help would be great as I am in desperate need of getting my computer back to working.
    Thanks again for replying!

  • Help! Still get error message after installing new hard drive

The original problem is below and thought that it would help to include it to see the initial problem.
I went out and bought a new hard drive (500gb) and installed it in my laptop.  I went to use the restore disks and I got the same exact error mentioned below.  I used a set of disks that I copied from the original recovery disk and it still did the same.  What is the error code and how can I fix this!!
    Please help!!
I have a Satellite A215-S7444 laptop and everytime I go to restore the drive to it's factory settings using the Toshiba recovery wizard I get the following error:  ERROR: 03-EEEE-000, AN ERROR HAS OCCURRED, PRESS [OK] TO TURN OFF COMPUTER.
Just a note, I have used my recovery disks to restore the factory settings before with no problems at all, now I get this message.  All the files are accesible on the CD and I have no virus' on my computer.
Lastly, the image part of the drive (The one that is like 1.5 gb) which is usually visible is not any more and has not been for a bit when you should see it when you open "My computer".  You can however see it when I go to "Administrative Tools-Computer Management."  It states that the drive is Healthy (EISA Configuration), type is basic, and there is no file system associated with the drive and there is no drive letter for it either.

Thanks for your quick reply!  I was wondering if anyone would reply!

  • Disk utility error when erasing an external hard drive

    Hi,
Not sure if this is the most appropriate fourm list to post this but I thought I'd give it a try.
I am running snow leopard on my MBP and am trying to use disk utility to erase and format an ext. HD.  While the disk icon does not show up on the desktop when I connect it to my mac, Disk utility does show the ext. hd in the left column, but no matter what format I try, even just using one partition and selecting zero out all data, I get the following error: "disk erase failed with the error: POSIX reports: The operation couldn't be completed. Cannot allocate memory".
Is the hd dead?  Are there other options?  I do have disk warrior, version 4.1.1 and it does not regonize the ext. hd.
    Please advise.
    Thanks,

Thanks for the reply. Yes, I did select the ext hd as the one I wanted to erase (my internal hd is my start up drive). After I selected the ext hd, (there is no volume listed under it so the only thing I can select is the hd itself). that is when I selected erase and then Mac journaled, then named the hd and then after selecting erase, I got the error. Also as a matter of note, if I select firstaid, both the repair and verify permissions are dimmed, so I can't even try to repair the disk. That is when I tried disk warrior hoping that could examine the hd, but since it is not mounted on the d/t, it doesn't show as a drive to check. I don't understand why the ext hd shows up in disk utility, but not the d/t. Also of note is the fact that when I connect that ext had to my Mac with a fw cable, a window opens saying that the drive is not readable and do I want to initialize it or ignore. I choose to initialize and that is when I get the error. Also of note is that I have tried both security options of "don't erase data" and "zero out data" and still get the same error.
Hope this clarifies things a bit.

  • External hard drive suddenly become read only

For those who have been using an external hard drive on OS X (using NTFS file system) without any problem and suddenly one day the system has started mounting it as a read only file system, this is because the file system right now has some inconsistences.
As it happened last night to me i started googling for a quick solution to solve the problem. But i didnt find anything out there. At least at first glance. So then i checked the system logs of the system in order to get some sort of specific information about why that was happening (in OS you have an application that makes so easy to have a look through the system logs and its in /applications/utilities/console.app). In my case, and i repeat, IN MY CASE, the problem was the following:
21/07/11 18:59:02          kernel          NTFS-fs warning (device /dev/disk1s1, pid 2140): ntfs_system_inodes_get(): $MFTMirr does not match $MFT.  Will not be able to remount read-write.  Run ntfsfix and/or chkdsk.
So afterwards once known the problem, was as easy as to mount the external HD in windows and execute the command chkdsk /f (google about the usage of the tool if dont know how it works).
Alternatively, you have the Linux option using the ntfsfix command, but you will need to install the program before that (if dont have it previously in your system) or otherwise you won't be able to use it (sudo apt-get install ntfsprogs)
    Hope it helps.
    Marc

I got an error message that my External Hard Drive was now 'read only'. Having scoured the various forums looking for clues as to why it had happened I found numerous suggestions, all of which seemed overly complicated and beyond my basic understanding (I'm old enough to remember when Macs 'just worked').
Anyway, among the suggestions on how to correct this I found what seemed like an overly simplified one - 'Don't switch on your external hard drive until after you've booted up'. Since I tend to leave mine on all the time, I immediately turned it off and back on again and ran Time Machine in hope rather than expectation. Would you believe it? It backed up as normal first time. Hope it works for anyone else having the same problem.

My external hard drive is a timecapsule with enough free space.
Please could you tell me what's hapenning ?
    Thank you!

I suggest you keep the entire iTunes folder to gether rather than moving only the media.
    Quit iTunes.
Copy the entire /Music/iTunes/ foldder to teh external drive.
    Launch iTunes and hold Option.
Select Choose library... and select the iTunes folder on the external.
This is all you need to do.

  • External hard drive does not shut down

Hello, When my mini mac goes to sleep my samsung external hard drive does not shut down or dismount properly. when i wake computer i have a error message stating improperly ejected hard drive. It also does not reconize HD until I disconnect and reconnet??? PLEASE HELP Thank you

My Mini was doing the same thing until I reset the PRAM. With four external drives. They would stop inadvertently with an "improperly ejected" error. Granted two of the drives went bad (6 and 7 years old) but a brand spanking new Seagate and a 3 year old Hitachi drive doing the same. Haven't seen the error since resetting the PRAM.
If you don't know how to do that, Reboot while holding the Cmd+Opt+P+R keys until your hear the startup chime three times and then release the keys.

  • I am looking for a docking station for an external hard drive.

I puchased an external docking station from MonoPrice. I have already returned this item once because of this error message. I am getting the same error message on the 2nd one. Please advise.

    Is this what you have?:
SATA HDD Docking Station w/ Card Reader & 2 Port USB Hub (USB+E-SATA)
If not, please post a link. It sounds like the dock comes with its own power supply but you are not using it or it is not putting out power. Most people get that message with USB external hard drives that are intended for mobile use and thus lack an indepenent power source. It overwhelms the USB bus wth power demands.
The specs for the product I linked says it comes with a power supply.

  • Please Help - External Hard Drive Issue

    1) Most of my music is on an external hard drive.
    2) I do not always keep my external hard drive connected to my computer.
    3) Recently, out of the blue, itunes started saying it couldn't find the files in library.
    4) I deleted the library and re-loaded it so that all the filepaths were correct.
    5) I disconnected my hard drive and opened my itunes library. It obviously couldn't find the files because the hard drive wasn't attached.
    6) I re-attached the hard drive.
    7) I opened itunes. It is no longer finding the files. Somehow the old filepaths were all erased. I have more than 7,500 songs, so finding the file for each one doesn't work as a solution.
I need to find a solution for this. I want my library on my C drive because I still have some music on that drive and don't want to have to attach my hard drive every time I add music (something I then do later). I tried sorting through all the other information out there, but there is too much and it's too varied. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks so much.
    Aidan
P.S. I'm wondering if this has anything to do with the itunes 8.0.2, which seems not to have some of the buttons shown on previous versions (i.e. "import"). Thoughts?

Thanks so much for the help. It's seriously annoying to have to do this, but if that's what it takes.... One question: Is there not any way just to keep the file paths the same? i.e. If, when I add the folder to the library, the file path points to the location on my external hard drive, why won't it just stay pointed there so that an error message shows when the hard drive's not attached but then doesn't show when it is? I mean, it seems that itunes is re-naming/re-addressing the file path whenever the hard drive's not attached - a very aggravating feature.
    Thanks again.

  • External Hard Drive woes (possibly Time Machine related)

    Hello everyone,
I am using one of the partitions on my WD My Passport for Mac (1 TB) partitioned into two sepaprate partions (both Mac OS Extended Journaled)  of 500 GB each as my backup disk for Time Machine.
Now, Time Machine seems to work fine on it for some time. However, after a period of time (~5 hours) time machine stops working. Here are the relevant logs.

When this happens, the Hard Drive makes beeping noises (each time Time Machine tries to access it). It refuses to unmount, and Disk Utility refuses to either verify or repair the hard drive. Forcibly unplugging the hard drive and replugging it does not help either. It makes beeping noises for about half a minute and then goes quiet. However, neither is it mounted nor is it visible in the disk utility.
The only way I have managed to fix this is to plug the hard drive in another mac, where it mounts without any problem. I then run disk utility to verify the hard drive (on that mac) and then when I replug the drive to my laptop, it works. Until it breaks again.
The only other "error" related to my external hard drive that I have found in system logs is also pasted below:

I don't know what the problem is, but I would like to be able to use an external. I also have another external plugged in my computer (NTFS, and I have NTFS write enabled via http://www.paragon-software.com/home/ntfs-mac/) and that hard drive works perfectly. Also, the problem was there before I enabled NTFS write so nothing was harmed in enabling NTFS write.
    System Info
OS X 10.7.3 (problem existed with 10.7.2) as well
    RAM: 8 GB
    Macbook Pro 15" (i7 2.2 GHz, 2011 model)

OSX is having trouble reading or writing to the drive.  That's usually hardware (the drive, port, or cable).
Try different ports, cables, and combinations of the two (a plug that works fine in one port may not make good contact in a different one).
Be sure it's connected directly to your Mac -- no hubs or daisy chains, and not a port on your keyboard.
Also, what Partition Map Scheme does the drive have?  (Check via Disk Utility - select the top line for the drive -- it should show at the lower right.)

  • I moved itunes file to external hard drive and want to move the file on my pc to recycle bin. When I move i get an error message that it cannot delete ituneshelper.dll access is denied. Can I move that file to the recycle bin?

I am trying to free up space on my pc and moving itunes files to external hard drive. I have followed instructions and believe I have file copied to new drive, but I am having trouble moving file to recycle bin as the instructions say. I am getting the following error message: cannot delete ituneshelper.dll:access denied, make sure disk is not full or write protected and file not in use. I know the file is not in use when trying to move. Any help would be most appreciated. I am on Windows XP.

Yes. And you should not have moved that folder. Put it back. To move your iTunes library move the folder from User's Music.
