Hi everyone
I Installed Oracle9i on XP.when I try to logo(SQL Plus) using Scott/tiger.It's giving error message:ORA:12560:TN:protacol adapter.
Pls help me to solve this problem.I have to work on this.

make sure your oracle_sid and oracle_home set properly.
Is the listener up and running on the server?
Are you giving tnsname to connect or not?

I tried to install Oracle 8i EE version 8.1.7 on Windows 2000. Everything is OK until the installation proceeded to installing "Oracle Database Configuration Assistant". At that point, I got an error message "ORA-12560 TNS:Protocol Adapter Error (network not loaded)". I looked up the error message. The cause of the error said: "This error occurs when the SQL*Net driver cannot find the JSB driver because you may have either forgotten to load the JSB driver (for instance MFTP) or used an incorrect TCP_VENDOR key (for example, TCP_VENDOR=NOVLWP).". And the suggested action said: "Load the JSB driver or use the correct TCP_VENDOR key.". I am using a standalone PC with Windows 2000 at home, and the PC does not connect to any network(except that I can dialup to internet via modem). What should I do? I can't understand the error message. Any expert to help me overcome the error?

I explain : with sql plus worksheet, no problem.
but with svrmgrl that is not the same.
In a cmd window, i write :

In the registry ORACLE_SID = mydb, and even if i write Set ORACLE_SID = mydb before svrmgrl, i always have the error.

Step create SPFILE ....*ORA-12560: TNS: protocol adapter error.*

Hi All,
by the installation of R/3 4.6C for a pilot system for the upgtrade from 4.6C to ECC 6.0 the installation hangs at step:
Create SPFILE: (this step creates the oracle server profile (SPFILE) from the up to now used PFILE (ini<SID>.ora). -
when I try to connect to DB via: connect /as sysdba I get the error message:
ORA-12560: TNS: protocol adapter error.
I know this oracle file can means many things and the R/3 is running fine. I copied the brtool from source system but it does not help. Until now there is no data from source. Its a new installation and we want to fix this error before we began to copy the data to the pilot system.
Anyone from you has a good feedback for me?

I have installed Oracle 11.2.0 64 bit database on my Windows 7 ( Home Premium) PC which is also 64 bit. I installed it because I am trying to setup Informatica. Later, I learnt that informatica is 32 bit and can not communicate to Oracle 11.2.0 64 bit database. So after digging through solutions, someone mentioned that I need to install Oracle 11g client 32bit.
I have installed 11g client software successfully now. Here is problem though :
When I launch SQL-Plus from 11g database , it works fine. However I launch SQL-Plus from 32bit client it gives me error as :
Ora-12560 :TNS: Protocol Adapter Error.
So I have been trying to resolve this error. I saw that this question has been posted many many times and have tried many thing as listed below :
1. copy tnsnames.ora from database ( dbhome_1) to client installation ( client_1 ) under ..\network\admin\ --- Didn't work.
2. Set $ORACLE_HOME and $ORACLE_SID environment variable.
Here is interesting fact - If I set $ORACLE_HOME to database path and not client path error changes to :
ORA-12557 TNS: Protocol adapter not loadable.
If I keep $ORACLE_HOME as client path then I get same error as earlier ORA-12560.
3. I have also tried changing $PATH variable. I did set to path containing only database installation, only client installation, both database and client installation with database installation appearing first
But all of these haven't worked.
Can anyone please suggest what I am missing and any further things I could try ?

Thank you in advance !unfortunately, we need to know exactly how you tried to connect with sqlplus when it "worked" and when it "didn't work". The key to the reported error messages is highly dependent on the environment settings AND the specification of the connect string. A copy and paste of the entire command line session would be most helpful.
But again, running on any 'home' edition of windows is not supported.

ORA 12560 OTN Protocol Adapter Error

I installed Oracle 9iAS DB and Developer. When I tried to run Form (Form Builder). I could not establish the connection.
After insert username and password (without hostname), the error said, ORA 12560 OTN Protocol Adapter Error. However, when I put the hostname, the message alert 'the service name could not be solved' or sth. Can anyone help me with this problem? Thank you so much

When I try

'svrmgrl' is not recognized as an internal or external command.
operable program or batch file.
and when I start lsnrctl
LSNRCTL> lsnrctl start
NL-00853: undefined command "lsnrctl". Try "help"
I am using XP , the database is on other drive and the Developer suite is on other drive however, Listener is working fine. This error "ORA-12560: TNS:protocol adapter error" comes only when I try to log into my database from isqlplus. I am using 9i. Any Ideas on what should be done.

Recently I have installed oracle 11gr2 on 64 bit solaris machine .During Installation i didnt get any error but when ever I am trying to create create a database Using DBCA I am getting a error as ORA-12560: TNS:protocol adapter error .The same error I am getting when ever trying to create the DB manually.

ORA-12560 TNS protocol Adapter error in 11g (11.1.0.6)

Hello All,
I have Oracle 11g installed on my machine and when i tried to log in to sql plus i got the error below:
ORA-12560 TNS protocol Adapter error
By setting the ORACLE_SID = orcl by browsing to the bin directory of Oracle Installation the above error disappaears and i am able to log in from sql plus.
My intention is to create a db backup for which i am trying to use the exp command...this time the same error appears.
Also the solution of setting the ORACLE_SID is cumbersome..everytimt i want to use sql plus i need to go in and set the ORACLE_SID.
Can anybody please help me out find a good solution for this?

Anyway, if you have more than one database it's normal that you have to set ORACLE_SID, if not how can Oracle know which database you want to access to ?
You can create batch files, one per database, or you can use connection strings, e.g. sqlplus username/password@<DB>.

I have an MS Access 2000 VB module that loads data from Access into an Oracle database. This worked when Access was 97 using DAO and Oracle RDBMS was 8i. Now, the database has been upgraded to 9i and Access has been upgraded to 2K using ADO. The error occurs at the time of connection. Here is my code:

ORA-12560: TNS:protocol adapter error..checked a lot of forums but it fails

I checked a lot of forums out here but no satisfying answers.
I'll go with the summary again.
I have Windows XP.
First I installed Oracle 9i on E drive for practice purpose. The installation was done successfully. I opened Internet explorer. Typed "http://hash/isqlplus" in the address bar and pressed enter. The page displayed and I logged in. Logging in was successful.
Now I installed the Developer Suite on the C drive. Installation was complete. Everything seemed fine but when I tried logging into my isqlplus again it started giving me an error saying "ORA-12560: TNS:protocol adapter error"
I have no idea how to go ahead with this.
Will be thankful if someone could clear this up.

If you search more, you would have seen loads of answers.
You now have more than one ORACLE_HOME and your latest install will be the current default ORACLE_HOME.
If your have not set TNS_ADMIN, all Oracle Installations on your server will be looking for the Listener (and tnsnames) on your default ORACLE_HOME which I guess will be the ORACLE_HOME of the Developer Suite.
So set TNS_ADMIN on th environment settings on the server to point to the correct place

Does anyone have any ideas what else I can check. I'm a Unix person, not a Windows person, which is making it even more complicated. If I was on Unix, I'd just blow everything away and start again from scratch, but since I'm not sure how to remove all traces from the registry, etc., I don't want to try that on this machine. There was already one other database created, but it's not goign to be used.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

thanks for the info. the problem, as it turns out, was that I was connected to the db server via a terminal service (Microsoft Management Console), which for some reason caused probelms with TNS. After I connected directly to the machine using VNC, I was able to create the database with no problems. strange but true.

How to solve ORA-12560:TNS:protocol adapter error?

I'm trying to use sqlplus on Windows 2008 R2 which is installed on VirtualBox to access an Oracle 11gR2 database on Red Hat Linux.
I'm sure that the database on Red Hat Linux is up and tnsnames.ora is a copy from another machine which is used by another application to connect to the same Oracle database.
When I run sqlplus, I got the ORA-12560: TNS:protocol adapter error.
sqlnet.ora
SQLNET.AUTHENTICATION_SERVICES = (NTS)
Both sqlnet.ora and tnsnames.ora are located in c:\app\administrator\product\11.2.0\client64\network\admin folder.
The registry ORACL_HOME has c:\app\administrator\product\11.2.0\client64.
echo %ORACLE_HOME% incommand window returns %ORACLE_HOME%
echo %ORACL_SID% in command window returns %ORACLE_SID%
If I set ORACLE_HOME to another folder, I will get the following error:
Error 6 initializing SQL*Plus
SP2-0667: Message file sp1<lang>.msb not found
SP2-0750: You may need to set ORACLE_HOME to your Oracle software directory
So, I believe the ORACLE_HOME in registry has the correct value.
I have also tried set ORACLE_SID to the service name listed in tnsnames.ora but sqlplus still returns the ORA-12560:TNS:protocol adapter error.
For unknown reason, the value of ORACLE_HOME and ORACLE_SID I set by using set command will not persist after I close the command window that I set the values.

It make NO sense do to as above when attempting to connect to Oracle DB on *NIX
which knows NOTHING about NTS Authentication.
SQLNET.AUTHENTICATION_SERVICES = (NONE)
or just remove the line or whole file.
Also need to be sure that ipchains is disabled on *NIX system
