Error message original file could not be located

when i try to play songs from my library i get this message. "original file could not be found" all my hardware is the same, no recent changes. not sure how to get my songs back in my library. the album/artist icon is still there but will not play.

Well I've tried installing itunes 7.3.2 on two different computers and it has messed up each one of them and itunes is no longer functional on either machine. I have no idea what is going on. in both situations the error message comes up that there are files missing and itunes must be reinstalled. i also cannot delete itunes and an attempt at installing a previous version gave me the exact same error.
this is very disappointing. i finally took the plunge and purchased a mac and am waiting for it to arrive. if this is the kind of service to expect i'm afraid i'll be very disappointed.
HAS ANYONE FIGURED THIS OUT YET???

  • Error message - Original file could not be found

When I open itunes, and try to click on a song, there is an "!" and I get the error message "original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?"
It does this for every song. I have to trace it down to "My Music\itunes\itunes\itunes music" and under that I have hundreds of files by artist.
How can I listen to the songs so I don't have to click on each one to make them play?
I hope you can help me.

First, a correction from my previous post: At the beginning I meant to write The iPod wasn't designed to sync playlist-related information back to iTunes.
And as for the polydorus link, let's try this .
    Sorry about that.
Does that make sense? Do I need both folders?
No, in the end you'll only need one but I'm still not sure which one.
*I think the difference is there are no folders like in wndows, but the itunes library leads me directly to my library on the itunes website
I don't understand what you mean by the itunes library leads me directly to my library on the itunes website.
It sounds like there is only one iTunes database - iTunes Library.itl - file and that it's in your iTunes1 folder. Whether or not that is the case, what I'd like you to do is follow the instructions in this article in the Apple Knowledge Base for opening an alternate iTune Library file. Select the Choose Library option and use the navigtion window that appears to make your way to an .itl file.
Select the .itl and iTunes will open with a Library that may - or may not - be different than what you last saw: somewhat different contents or exclamation marks may be present again.
If it's not a library you're happy with, close iTunes, wait ten seconds or so and then repeat the procedure looking for another .itl file - each one contains references for a different iTunes library.
When you find a library you're happy with, i.e. all the contents are listed and no exclamation marks, make a note of the location of that .itl. It's the one you're going to want to work with.
Using that database file, you can go back to iTunes, right-click various songs > Get Info > Summary tab and look to the bottom of that window to find out where that Library is being directed for those files. Make a note of that location.
When we know those two things, we should be able to proceed from there with deleting things.
In the future, when I buy new songs from apple, where will they automatically get stored?
In the location that's been selected in iTunes Edit menu > Preferences > Advanced tab for the iTunes Music folder.
What will happen when I sync my ipod on the computer?
That brings us back to the beginning of this post, by default the synch goes from iTunes to your iPod. So you shouldn't synch your iPod unless there's a satisfactory Library being displayed in iTunes.

  • Garageband - original file could not be located

I have just started to use garageband but i have fallen at the first hurdle. When i click on a song from my itunes library in the media browser i get the message "original file could not be located" However, if i right click on it, i locate it in my finder or open it in iTunes, both of which play fine. I have today bought ilife 11, installed it but i still have the same problem. Also, if i drag a song into the track window it also plays there. Can anyone shed any light.

I'm having the same problem myself. Just upgraded from Ilife 09 to 11 and the following message comes up for all my song files.
The song " by name" could not be used because the original file could not be located.
But if I go to my I tune files and click on the song, it plays it. On going back to garage band I tried to copy Podcast and memo files and it allowed this to happen. Can any body help.

  • I get an error message saying that the original file could not be located on about half the songs in my library. Not all but half.

I'm unable to play approx. half the songs in my library. I get an error message saying that the original file could not be located. I am asked if I want to locate the file, I click locate and get  a screen with a list of confusing looking files and nothing seems to solve the problem. As is probably apparent by now I am not particularly computer literate. I don't understand why this problem occurs on only half my library.

This "original file cannot be found" thing happens if the file is no longer where iTunes expects to find it. Possible causes are that you or some third party tool has moved, renamed or deleted the file, or that the drive it lives on has had a change of drive letter. It is also possible that iTunes has changed from expecting the files to be in the pre-iTunes 9 layout to post-iTunes 9 layout,or vice-versa, and so is looking in slightly the wrong place.
Select a track with an exclamation mark, use Ctrl-I to get info, then cancel when asked to try to locate the track. Look on the summary tab for the location that iTunes thinks the file should be. Now take a look around your hard drive(s). Hopefully you can locate the track in question. If a section of your library has simply been moved, or a drive letter has changed, it should be possible to reverse the actions.
Alternatively, as long as you can find a location holding the missing files, then you should be able to use my FindTracks script to reconnect them to iTunes .

  • Error code; original file could not be found, would you like to locate it?

when i try to transfer songs from my library to my ipod shuffle, i get this error message (error code; original file could not be found, would you like to locate it?). Then an exclamation point(!) in the first column it appears next to the song in the library.
When i go to the folder mymusic/itunes/itunesmusic folder, the song is there, but why is there an exclamation point next to the song in the library? And how do I restore all these songs, and what causes this?

Sounds like your iTunes .ITL library file got corrupted.
What are the iTunes library files?
There are some posts around here by Buegie on how to fix that...

  • Original file could not be located

I woke up this morning, booted my PC (Windows 7 Professional), opened iTunes and tried to create a playlist. All of my music is stored in iCloud and last year I even used Apple's Music Match. The world was right last night when I powered down and this morning no matter what song I choose I receive the following error message: "The song XXX could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?" There have been no changes to my PC and how can I locate the original file when I uploaded alll of my music to Apple????
    Help.....

  • The song "---" could not be used because the original file could not be located. Would you like to locate it?

I have 2 users on my computer and it is causing an error message telling me the original file could not be located. How can I fix this?

Probably not every one, but you will have to do it several times. Right click on the name of the song, show in window's explorer and when it can't it should give you a dialogue to find the song.
Once it finds one it'll offer to find more and you can locate stuff that way.

  • The song...could not be used because the original file could not be located

I just used Garageband this past Sunday, no problem...I open it up tonight and I get this message:
"The song...could not be used because the original file could not be located."
I click the OK button and it comes up with another song title, and I have clicked it 20 or 30 times already and it keeps coming up and I can't access anything else and it is frustrating!
Anyone know how to stop the madness?!
iMac 2.7 GHz Intel Core i5, 8 GB RAM, 1 TB HD, OS X 10.9.3
    Garageband 10.0.2

"The song...could not be used because the original file could not be located."
GarageBAnd cannot find the recorded media or imported audio files, that should be in the Media folder inside your project.
Crtl-click the GarageBand icon in the Dock and use Force-quit to quit your current project.
Then ctrl-click the .band file of your current project and select  "Show package contents." open the Media folder inside and check if all recorded media and imported audio files are there and you can play them.
Have you moved your project or has it been transferred by mail?
If the media are missing or do not play, there is not much you can do. If all media are there, repair the permissions of the project. If it is on an external drive, move it to your system drive and try there.
If you cannot rescue the project, copy the media file out of the project, so you can use the recordings to recreate the song. You can launch GarageBand into the file "recent songs" panel to create a new project or to pick a recent project, by holding down  the alt/options key while double-clicking the GarageBand icon.

When I try to sync i get the message "original file could not be found.  What does that mean?
Have i lost all the music on my computer?

iTunes' library keeps track of where your tracks are located. If you move a track, or keep your music on an external drive and don't turn it on before starting iTunes, or your computer's file system becomes corrupted, or iTunes' library gets corrupted, or..., then iTunes goes to where it thinks the file is located, can't find it, and you get !

  • Revel Error Message: "Some files could not be uploaded."

Error Message: "Some files could not be uploaded. 1 file was unable to be uploaded and was skipped." I am a Revel user from its inception. I have never had upload errors before in Adobe Revel. I am trying to upload jpeg files in the same way I have done for months, which is by dragging and dropping files directly into an album I have created. Starting yesterday, only some files upload properly. Others receive the above error message. When I have tried to re-upload the jpegs which have not gone, I receive either the same error message or a slightly different error which indicates the files are not uploading because they are duplicates. They're not duplicates and appear nowhere else in my Revel albums. I have rebooted my Window 7 PC, I have repeatedly logged out and back into Revel. I have tried both Firefox and IE. I have tried creating new albums and uploading the failed files to a new album. I have cleared my Firefox cache. I have tried both the "drag and drop" feature and the "Add Photos or Videos" button in Revel. I have tried using the "Export to Revel" feature in Adobe Photoshop Elements 11. I have tried uploading never-before-attempted files, and - on average - only 25% of those brand-new files are uploading. I am a subscriber and pay for the Revel service, so I am not bumping into any upload quotas. I have read through these forums and have found problems similar to mine as far back as May 2013, but none of the problems ever seem to have been resolved other than the users simply giving up. Can you help? I am becoming increasingly confused with respect to which files have succeeded and which files have failed. Thank you. -Dori

    Yvonne-
You can have many libraries with many albums and files within them. Each library is independent, so if you upload a file to two libraries then you two copies. If you put a photo from a library in albums that live within that library, then there is only one copy in the library that each album has access to so it will show up when you view the album. This might help : http://forums.adobe.com/message/5197228#5197228.
I found a few incomplete files in your account also. We will take care of this for you and contact you when it is complete.

  • FCP X can't import iTunes music - says "The song "Warp Factor" could not be used because the original file could not be located."

FCP X can't import iTunes music - says "The song "XXXXX" could not be used because the original file could not be located."
I saw the reply that iTunes was probably moved. I restored it from Time Machine when my hard drive crashed. How do I fix it to import into FCP X?

I figured it out by going into iTunes and clicking on the Library link under File. This bring up a box that allows the music files to be reconnected to the iTunes music folder.
FCP X now sees the music and it can be placed into the project timeline.

  • I'm getting an error message saying "file could not be used because the original file cannot be found. Would you like to locate it?" What gives?

I've updated iTunes as recommended (and when recommended) but made no other changes to my computer or files. Why are the files gone?

    I was not complete clear.
Since you never changed the settings in the advanced section of iTunes preferecnes, you have to chech that your music is really in the location setted in the folders reported in the advanced section.  If not you have 2 ways: reset the position of this folders or in the actual disk organisation or in the pointing on the preferences.
If you press the reset button you just give to itunes its default setting as for the position of the music files: probably this will be a good choice if you have never changed any default preference.
But before I would check the folders and see if the songs are really there
In my iTune I have this, and I believe it is the default.
