Error Message Premiere Pro CS3 running short of system memory; then closes

Lately Premiere CS3 is giving me the error message "running very low on system memory, save project and proceed with caution" and then it frequently closes on me unexpectedly. Hints?

If you are getting a "real" error, then the first thing that I would recommend is to study your programs and Processes in Task Manager. Look closely at the Processes tab. What is loaded and running? A screen-cap of the Processes list might help people to spot many that are totally unnecessary and can safely be removed from the boot files via MSCONFIG.
Next, when you're going to edit, Exit from ALL anti-virus, spyware blockers and pop-up blockers. Obviously, you will NOT want to be surfing the 'Net, once you do that. If you are editing, you will not be using other programs, except as required for actually editing - might be Photoshop, Encore, Illustrator, but no e-mail, messaging, iTunes, etc.. Next, use a program, like EndItAll2, to close down all unnecessary programs and Processes. It used to be freeware, but is now shareware. When installed, it surveys all running Processes and builds a database of the ones that it believes are unnecessary. It's really good at this, but you can tweak it easily, should it overlook one, or included one, that is really necessary. The reason that I Exit from things like AV and spyware detectors, is that by design, they will "lie" to programs like EndItAll2 and say that they ARE necessary. That is the way they works against Trojans, etc., that will try to close these to duck detection. There are other such programs, and many are freeware. I just use this one on every machine. Luckily, I got copies, when it was freeware, but would gladly pay for the shareware version, since it's so very good.
Now, your system is clean, lean and mean. You have rid it of some programs and Processes on a semi-permanent basis with MSCONFIG and then closed out of others. Last, on a session basis, you have eliminated many more.
One more step that can make a world of difference: check your Windows' Virtual Memory settings. Study the location of the Page File and also the management configuration. I like a static Page File, off of my C:\ and not on my media file HDD. I set to 2.5x my physical RAM. Others will locate this file elsewhere. It might take a bit of experimentation to find what is best for you.
Last, more HDD's, properly used, of adequate speed and size, will benefit you. Always defrag all HDD's on a regular basis. Much gets written to, read from, and often deleted during editing. This can fragment a HDD in a hurry. See the articles that are linked HERE. There is a wealth of info on setting up one's physical HDD's, plus other tips.
Now, you are ready to edit efficiently and smoothly, provided that you have good Assets, that PrPro likes. Still, as has been mentioned, there is a false error, and it often pops up with Titler.
Good luck,
Hunt

  • Error in Premiere Pro CS3.

Whenever I had a problem and i posted it here, i always got helped by you guys, so first of all, i want to thank those who helped me out there, and wanted you to know that i really appreciate that help.
Here is probably my last issue with Premiere Pro CS3.
    The problem:
From time to time, i get an error. A message saying: " sorry a serious error has occurred that requires adobe premiere pro to shut down"
It saves the current project, and when i start premiere over, it loads it from there. It usually happens when:
I ' activate ' an effect, example: I change the opacity to 0 ( typing it with the keyboard as a percentage ) and press enter. Right when i press enter, it pops up. ( it happens with any kind of effect, just from time to time, when i ' activate ' it)
When i minimize an audio file by dragging it to the left or the right, it happens when i release the right mouse button. These are just examples. The issue is that when i make a change, this error repeats.
I'd love to hear what the issue may be.
    Appreciate any kind of help.

Can you give us the specs. of one of the typical Projects, and their Assets, where you see this happening?
Next, can you give us the specs. of your computer, in as much detail, as is possible?
Can you also list the programs/processes, that load at boot up? A screen-cap, or report from Process Explorer will tell us a lot.
Also, before beginning an editing session, you might want to look into this ARTICLE. If you have Win7, be sure to look down-thread for the link to Black Viper's Web site for tuning that OS.
This ARTICLE might be useful for telling you what is happening with your system and your programs, when you get the error and crash.
    Good luck,

  • CS3 "Running Low on System Memory" and crashing

    Hi all
I'm running CS3 on my less than three year old PC with the following specs:
    Intel Core 2 duo E8400 3.00 Ghz 6M 1333
3 Gigs of memory (DDR2 - two one gig chips, and two half gig chips) (max I can have on 32 bit XP, and well within Adobe's specifications)
    XFX GEForce 9800GTX 512 675M DDR3 Dual Vid Card
    Windows XP Professional 32 bit
C Drive:  250 GB Barracuda SATA 7200 RPM
D Drive (where I edit):  500 GB Barracuda 7200.11 SATA
The C drive is 33% free (40 GB free space)
The D drive is 40% free (188GB free space)
The scratch disks are all set for the D drive.
I actually specified this machine for running CS3 specifically.  In the last few months, however, I have been having instances where it throws this error:  "Adobe Premiere is running low on system memory.  Please save the project and proceed with caution."  I usually save then, and then if I perform a few more steps (like scrubbing through video, or moving a clip), it either freezes, or throws an error that it has met with a critical error and is going to shut down.
I don't understand why it has started to do this.  The files I am using are not any larger than those I've used in the past.  Some were shot with an SLR, but their file size and frame size are not and different than things I have sucessfully edited in the past.
I have had the machine to the shop, and they checked all the hardware, defragged the disks, validated that the memory is working, and that the vid card is working correctly.  The also updated the bios and made sure that Windows was up to date.
Right now, my workflow goes something like:  Open Premiere, edit for about six steps.  Get the warning.  Save.  Go another couple of steps.  Program crashes.  Open again, do about six more steps.... around and around.
    Can anyone help?
    LTK

I'm using cs3, xp, pretty much same setup you have but bigger Hard drives and more room on mine...constantly defrag after doing a project etc...keep it fast as I can....  I added memory to my mobo to make 4 gig...just to eek out as much as I could out of the ram...xp doesnt see it all, but I did notice a improvement with adding the ram...
also, when I added the ram it was apparent that of the slowest memory of your ram chips is what all the ram defaults to...so if you have slow 512K chips but fast 1gig chips, all your ram will operate at the slower speed.
when I get a mssg ( only trying to edit HD , as I never have probs with SD footage at all ) --sys mem low, I save , shut off computer and restart and reopen the program.... start from scratch more or less....so all my resources are free ( for example, if I use photoshop or something else while editing there may be memory leaks with some of that ....where not all the mem is freed up for editing... to solve that as a potential cause I save, reboot and begin again....)
after a LOT OF TESTING ( and I mean a lot ! ) I have discovered I CANNOT EDIT HD MATERIAL WITH THIS MACHINE...PERIOD.
It is not powerful enough... and believe me, I tried, both 1080p and 720p ...  after about 2-3 min of video on timeline at 720p at 24fps, this machine is gasping like a flounder out of water.
    good luck
( bottom line ----upgrade to 64bit OS and pile on the fastest ram you can stuff onto your new mobo and get at least one more HD ( at least 1T for your project ) look at the suggestions here for raid arrays etc ) and keep them 1/4 full only if possible...  the more full, the more time the heads are moving... more lost time...

  • Clipnotes error using Premiere Pro CS3

I would like to know if anyone has a solution to this problem:
When trying to use Clip notes I get an error: Export Error - Writer not found.
I am using Windows Vista and Windows media not Quick Time.
This is to create the clip notes in PDF.
Your help will be much appreciated.

Sorry. It was worth a shot. As a matter of interest, can you successfully export clip notes using any codec?
    Cheers

  • Big problems exporting from Premiere Pro CS3

    Hey all.
Would be massively grateful if anyone here could help me out. I'm in the process of trying to export a 23 and a half minute project from Premiere Pro CS3. I've tried exporting to different formats, (Quicktime, MPEG2, etc..) but keep arriving at the same conclusion. The process will freeze midway through, and I'm greeted by the following error messages:
    "premiere pro debug event
premiere pro has encountered an error
    [..\..\Src\PPixHandleUtilities.cpp-114]"
    When I close that, another window pops up saying;
    "export error
application failed to return a video frame.
    cancelling the operation."
I'm not really sure where to go from here. Previously during the process of editing this project, I would occasionally get a message telling me that premiere pro was "running low on system memory". Fearing this to be the problem I was having while exporting, I attempted to export an extremely low quality version of the project, but arrived at the same conclusion. I also wondered if there was a corrupt frame or clip somewhere that was causing the issue, so I overlayed one whole transparent clip over the whole sequence and tried to export, but again, the same result.
I now have to put all my faith in you Adobe Wizards! Please ask me any questions that might help you to arrive at what may be causing the problem, I'll answer them the best I can
    Many thanks!
    Andy

    >13.4GB free
    FAR too small !!!
The program itself uses more than that for temporary working files
Also, unless you already have a 2nd hard drive or eSata external, you are below specification
Trying to use only ONE Hard Drive for Video Editing
You are a music conductor, with a baton that you use to point to various parts of the orchestra... this is like Windows pointing to various parts of the hard drive to do Windows housekeeping or to load program segments for various functions
Now, at the same time and with the same hand... while still using the baton to conduct the orchestra... pick up a bow and play a fiddle... this would be doing something with your video file at the same time as all the other work
You as a person cannot do both at the same time with the same hand
A computer is a LITTLE better, in that it can switch from one kind of task to another very quickly... but not quickly enough for EASY video editing
You need AT LEAST two hard drives (separate drives, never a partition http://forums.adobe.com/thread/650708 for more) with Windows (or Mac OS) and software on your boot drive, and video files on a 2nd drive so the boot drive is not slowed down by trying to do everything
    Partition = Crash http://forums.adobe.com/thread/957286
I find that the three drives I use work very well for me, for editing AVCHD video... some people use a 4th drive, so video INPUT files are on drive three and all OUTPUT files are on drive four... I only bought a mid-tower case instead of a full tower case (my bad... but had to fit in the space available on my office desk!) so I use the three drives that will fit
Depending on your exact hardware (motherboard brand & model AND USB2 enclosure brand & model AND external hard drive brand & model) AND the type of video file, you may... or may NOT... be able to use an external USB2 hard drive for SD (Standard Definition) video editing
Steve Grisetti in the Premiere Elements forum http://forums.adobe.com/thread/856208 and Jim Simon in the Premiere Pro forum http://forums.adobe.com/thread/856433 use USB externals for editing
A USB3 hard drive connected to a motherboard with USB3 is supposed to be fast enough for video editing (I don't have such, so don't know) but eSata DOES have a fast enough data transfer for video editing... I have not used the eSata Dock below... for reference only, YMMV and all the usual disclaimers

  • Capture error premiere pro cs3

I've got an ongoing capture error in premiere pro cs3 (on Mac OSX).
At around the 9 minute mark of capturing, it stops and says 'Unknown recorder error'. The footage is still captured if I stop it straight away but lost if I leave it for a while. I'm using canon hv30 camera to capture dv footage (not hdv) and can't seem to solve it. Any suggestions?

Try a different capture utility.  VideoHelp.com will list plenty of free alternatives.  If they stumble as well, there ie likely something wrong with the tape at that spot.

  • Import Premiere Pro CS3 Windows projects into Premiere Pro CS5 Mac.

Hi there people. I hope you can help me. I have had premiere pro CS3 on my windows system for some years but now run a Mac with Master Collection CS5, my problem is that my existing prproj files on windows format do not open in CS5 Premiere Pro for Mac, I get a message telling me that I need to see the user guide for importing options, I have tried to do so, but there is no information about how to do this.
Can anyone here please tell me how to get around this, as I need to rework some of these old windows projects however my old windows system is totally dead now so I cannot open the files in the CS3 windows version either.
Please help, oh and spare me the useless windows vs. mac arguments.
I hope someone here can help
    Thanks

Since you are trying to Open a CS3 PC Project, you should not have THAT many issues in CS5 Mac. Have you tried both the Open and Import - similar but different operations? Have both methods failed?
One possible problem would be the Effects & Transitions used in the CS3 PC Project. Here is a LIST of the Transitions and Effects in CS4 for the PC, that are missing in the Mac version. I would assume that CS3 and CS5 would be similar. However, in similar cases, PrPro has thrown a more specific error message. I have only Opened Pr 6.5 Mac Projects into PrPro 2.0 PC, and these have been almost perfect. Where there were missing Transitions, I got a very explicit message, telling me what had been used that was missing from my program, and exactly where the problem existed (specific TimeCode). In my case, two Transitions just did not exist in my PrPro 2.0, and one was a 3rd party Transition, or Effect, and I did not have that. Still, the older Mac Projects Opened fine, and I just made note of where I would need to make changes. I would anticipate that similar would occur, if the Mac version did not have some Transition, or Effect, but do not know specifically. Still, based on the warning messages that I got, with such complete documentation, I'd expect similar.
Now another consideration - Assets. If there are Assets that you cannot work with on your Mac, say DV-AVI, or WMV, those would likely throw an error. Again, I would expect that error message to elaborate a bit more.
Do you know the details of your CS3 Projects and their Assets? Anything that you can think of there?
Just thinking here, and unfortunately, I have never gone the direction that you are going, and with the versions that you are working with, so something simple and glaring (to others) might just be slipping past me.
Good luck, and maybe others will have much better input on your issue. Also - welcome to the forum!

  • Premiere Pro CS3 Not Responding on new System

Can someone please help me out here?!?!? I just bought a brand new laptop. It haves an i7 processor, 8gb of ram, 1 tb of hard drive space, as well as runs on 64 bit with Windows vista 8.1 I believe. As we all may know Adobe Premiere Pro CS3 runs as a 32 bit program. Every time I try and open up a project I have already been working on prior to my new system and try to locate where the specific files are for it to link/synchronize, the Adobe Premiere Pro CS3 program freezes up and "Not Responding" appears causing me to press "ctrl, alt, and delete" to end the program using the task manager every time. Shouldn't I be able to run a 32 bit program on a 64 bit system? What can I do? Please help me!!! Thank you in advance!!!

    2 things to try
Right click the program icon and, if available, select running in WinXP mode from the pop-up option window
Right click the program icon and, if available, select run as administrator from the pop-up option window
    >Windows vista 8.1 I believe
As far as I know, that does not exist... current is Windows 8.1 (Vista is OLD and discontinuted)

  • Premiere pro cs3 doesn't place audio into the corresponding video track

It places a video clip with audio in the Video 1 track, the audio is not automatically placed into Audio track 1 but it goes to Audio 2 or 3 or 4. I checked settings both Project and Preferences but have not clue what may cause this problem. Any help would be greately appreciated.
I have Premiere Pro CS3 running on Vista home premium. Thank you

  • Running low on system memory (PE8)

    Hi all
I recently started getting the "Premiere Elements is running low on system memory, please save your work and proceed with caution" message in PE8. I have read tons of topics and websites about the problem and tried every solution that was described in them. I'm not really expecting a solution, only some sympathy
    What I'm doing:
I'm from Belgium in Europe and I did a month long trip on Route 66 last year, together with a friend. Now I'm in the middle of making a road movie out of our footage. The clips were shot with a Samsung camcorder using the MP4 container. GSpot tells me it's using an avc1 H.264/MPEG-4 AVC codec.
I started using these files without thinking, even though 1 minute of footage is approximately 100 MB large. That worked quite okay, but now I'm about 25 minutes into my montage and I'm getting an increased number of the "running low on system memory" message, at the point where they pop up after about a minute's work.
    What I tried:
Then I converted all the used video files using WinFF, into MP4 files with more compression, making the files about six times smaller in size. Now, when I open up PE8 and the interface is loaded, I immediately get the "running low on system memory" message, probably because PE8 is conforming the clips again. Because that didn't work, I put the original files back in place, but as expected that gave the same result. Now PE8 crashed when I try to do anything.
Before I start working, I make sure all other programs and their corresponding processes are shut down, so the computer has little else to do than keep me from being frustrated
    My system:
I'm running PE8 under Windows 7 Ultimate. I have an AMD Phenom 8600B triple core processor with 3 GB of RAM and one hard drive, divided into two partitions with 135 GB free on the disk where my movie clips and project file are. I moved the scratch disks in PE8 to an external hard drive that's connected through USB 3.0. I upped my virtual memory, the paging file is now 7070 MB large, with the custom size set initially to 4000 MB and a max size of 6000 MB.
    Last words:
I'm guessing PE8 is now crashing because it has too much to do reconforming all video and that I probably will be fine if I convert the clips first, and then start using them in PE. I will do that for the rest of my movie but I don't want to redo those first 25 minutes, because they almost literally cost me blood, sweat and tears.
    What I want:
A listening ear, a pat on the back and maybe the one solution that hasn't been uttered anywhere on the internet yet and somehow manages to rid me of all frustration

    Neale,
There is a green-screen video (video2) with a still picture background (as video1) that runs through the entire video.  The still is 720 px high by 800 px wide.
Again, creating the mpeg in for DVD widescreen, no problem.  FLV web medium, no problem.  FLV web large - memory problems.  When creating FLV web large, RAM usage never goes above 6½ to 7 GB.  No other apps running, anti-virus shut down.
    Maybe PE9 can't use all 24 GB?  As a 32-bit app, I guess it can't.
    Photoshop works well, at least.

  • Premiere Pro CS3 capture error after Aug 09 vista update

im using premiere pro cs3 on two PC's running vista.  after the last vista update last week, i can no longer import HDV or DV from my HV30.  both PC's detect the camera and ask to import into windows movie maker or other programs, but when i open premiere pro cs3 and click on capture, both PC's refuse to acknowledge that a camerat attached.  is anyone else having this error?  if so, have anyone found a soultion to this error?

Strange as it might sound, I'd also install the latest audio and video drivers. OS updates can kill these in a heartbeat. Test afterwards.
It sounds like Vista is seeing the camera OK, but I'd check just a bit deeper. Go to Control Panel>System>Hardware>Device Manager (or whatever Vista might call it?), and with your camera attached and turned on, navigate to it. Open up the window for that device and check every panel. Any warnings, or errors anywhere?
In PrPro, check all of the Capture Preferences. Anything amiss there? Anything changed, since the update?
As a test, create a current Restore Point (do not trust that Vista has done this for you - do it manually to be sure), and then choose a Restore Point from before the Update (I'd actually go back several, if possilbe). Use that and test again. Does PrPro now see the camera and does it Capture as before? If the earlier examinations do not point up something, and this test shows that PrPro CAN Capture, you have at least narrowed it down to the Vista update.
    Good luck,

  • Premiere Pro CS3 Encoding Error

I'm supporting an end user who has been using Premiere Pro CS3 for years to develop and encode videos on their computer.
Recently, they have been experiencing an issue with one particular project they're been attempting to encode.  The project is nothing out of the ordinary, various video and audio files, a little bit of text.  They're trying to encode the project down to an MPEG2 format for burning to a DVD.
The problem occurs about 20%-30% through the second pass of rendering.  Premiere Pro will give an application error, stating that memory referenced cannot be "written".  The program then shuts down and the attached Event Viewer log is written.  I've done research, but haven't found any items relating to these errors.
The only major change that I know of on his computer was that Adobe After Effects was installed recently.  I don't know the version level of After Effects installed.
Premiere is up-to-date.  The user demonstrated the ability to encode other projects, both larger and smaller, without issue.  All of the files been used as part of the problem project have been used in the past without issue.  I'm having the user deconstruct their project to try to identify any layers or files that may be causing the problem.  Rather than go through that tedious tasks, I'm hoping someone has an idea of what's going on.

If the project have captured video, this problem can be caused by defective capture. Frames of captured video can have compression problems even not having any apparent defect when they are showed. Since some compressions are inter frames, the compression can have defects during the capture. the funny is, the appearance of those frames can look like normal (since human eye cant see and scan those thousands/millions of pixels one-by-one and detect which one is defective). When you are about to encoding it, or "trancode" it, the change from a defective compressions to a mpg2 DVD for example make the program crash.
If thats the case, u can check in which frame Prem crashes, get the clip to AE and re-export it to a completely diferent format and compression, them replace the Premiere clip by the new one.

  • Premiere Pro CS3: How do I get rid of hundreds of short horizontal lines all over the screen?

I have taken over a high school computer lab. We have Premiere Pro CS3. The Premiere Window gets peppered with many hundreds of horizontal dashes that interfere with readability. The dashes are uniformly about 16 pixels long and two or three pixels thick. They seem random in how many appear at any time. If I resize the window, they diminish and then come back. Occasionally they are gone completely. They never appear outside of the Premiere window. These dashed lines do not appear with other programs. We use Photoshop, Illustrator, and many other programs with no problem.See the attached image.
The machines have Pentium(R) 4 2.80 ghz; 2 gigs ram; Nvidia graphics card Gforce 8400 GS.
I have never run across this behavior before. I would appreciate any help. Thanks,
    Geo Monley

Probably a bad video card - or a bad video driver.  First, try to reinstall the video driver.  If that doesn't work, replace the card.

  • Premiere pro cs3 ftp link

We purchased Premiere Pro CS3 couple years ago.  Had to reformat computer, can't reinstall because downloaded first time with trial and the 30 days is up.  Adobe keeps telling me they will make the Premiere Pro CS3 link to install the program and email the link to me.  This has been going on since the beginning of 2009.  Still no link.  upgraded to CS4 like Adobe suggested, having all kinds of problems.  Is it possible to use someone else's installation discs for CS3 but use my serial number to register it?

I have Premiere Pro CS4 installed on my desktop and my laptop. My projects are generally short in length (30 seconds to 30 minutes; some larger but the project size doesn't seem to make any difference) and I am still in SD, not HD.  Although a little slow because I'm running 32 bits, initially it worked fine on both, until . . . .
Desktop - all of a sudden I'm getting an error message "Licensing for this product has stopped working", followed by a couple similar error messages.  It will only stay open for 5 minutes tops before this message appears.  I've tried the solutions posted by Adobe and the Forums but nothing has worked.  I can't think of anything that changed on my computer that made this start happening.
Laptop - Same error message as above. It never did import to Media Composer. Then I had issues with the Dell XPS laptop so our IT dept worked on it and fixed those issues by replacing motherboard, memory and video card (old video card was a NVIDIA Geo Force 8800 GTX, new card is a ATI Mobility Radeon X1800, any thoughts as to whether this replacement was a step up or down from the NVIDIA are welcome). They reinstalled the programs and now Premiere works okay but it still won't import to Media Composer.  Media Composer opens but the project never gets there and I get the red X or the caution triangle.
Desktop - Premiere doesn't work but it does talk to Media Composer.  If I can get it to stay up long enough I can take the video I create from the laptop, open it on my desktop and then Import to Media Composer.
The desktop is a Dell XPS 720; Windows XP Professional Version 2002 w/Service Pack 3; 32 bit; Intel Core 2 Quad; Q6600 @ 2.40GHz; 2.40 GHz; 2.75 GB of RAM.
The laptop is a Dell XPS 720; Windows XP Professional Version 2002; 32 bit; Intel Core 2 CPU; T7200 @ 2.00GHz; 1.99 GHz; 3.25 GB of RAM.
This is extremely frustrating.  Especially when I didn't have any problems with CS3.  Thanks for any help you can provide
