ERROR MESSAGE: The IPOD cannot be updated.

Please help!! Have tried everything can think of including, resetting, retrying, restarting, reinstalling and restoring. ITunes automatically starts downloading when you connect but then only transfers the first 50 or so songs in the library, and then says update complete. When you ask it to then update the IPOD through file menu an error message comes up saying 'The IPOD cannot be updated, the disk could not be read from or written to.' There is no problem with the IPOD, because I have been able to update it via another PC, it just won't update via the laptop even though the ITunes has been set up on the laptop as the ITunes I want to use.

To all concerned: There is a new Apple Support Document regarding this error:
-36 or "Disk cannot be read from or written to" error syncing iPod in iTunes
Maybe this helps.

    Hello there dilip77707,
It sounds like you are getting this error message that your iPod cannot be read from or written to when you are trying to update your iPod Nano. I recommend the troubleshooting from the following article to help you get that resolved. Its pretty straight forward, just start at the top and work your way down as needed:
'Disk cannot be read from or written to' when syncing iPod or 'Firmware update failure' error when updating or restoring iPod
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

  • Receive error message, The iPod cannot be synced.  The required disk cannot be found.  iPod nano 6th Gen, all latest updates, Macbook Pro, with OS 10.6.7

Receive error message, "The iPod cannot be synced.  The required disk cannot be found.  This is a iPod nano 6th Gen, all updates on iTunes and iPod, Macbook Pro OS 10.6.7.  This is getting frustrating.  I have changed USB ports, cables, reset, restored and was able to sync one time in parts, not all songs at once.  I have seen a lot of this same issue, will Apple please find a solution, nothing works, I think I wasted my money with this iPod.  I have the iPod touch, iPod shuffle, 4th gen iPod nano, iPhone and iPad.  This is the only device that has this issue.

I was actually able to investigate and solve the problem myself. After readng many posts, I found that someone else's tips worked for me:

Try running a disk check out the iPod using the tools provided by windows.
    To do this:
    1. Plug in your iPod and close iTunes.
    2. Go to "My Computer". Click on the iPod drive once. Go to File, and then click Properties.
    3. Go to the Tools tab. Under "Error Checking", click Check Now.
    4. Check both boxes. One says "Automatically fix file system errors" and the other says "Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors". Place a check mark next to each of these options and hit Start.
The scan may take several minutes or more to complete, but once it has, go ahead and restart iTunes, and try re-syncing files to your iPod.

This is getting frustrating.  Every example of my problem has the same reply:
Try deleting the iPod Photo Cache folder.  This is normally located in your pictures folder.  Once this is done, try syncing again.

I have NO photos on my Ipod Nano.  I select "Photos" and the Ipod goes to a blank screen with the msg "No Photos" at the bottom.  There must be some other file missing.  Itunes won't connect to the Ipod, I keep getting the same error over and over.  It would be nice if it told me what file is missing.

When i connect my ipod shuffle to itunes i get an error message the ipod cannot be synced, the required disk cannot be found  anyone have this happen? How do i get past it?

I seem to recall that this may be cause by overloading the USB bus (lack of power to go around).  Shut down your computer.  Reset the iPod shuffle using this procedure.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1655
Disconnect ALL peripheral USB devices, including keyboard and mouse.  Power up the computer.  If you need your mouse, connect it and launch iTunes.  Connect the iPod shuffle to a direct USB port and try the sync again.  See if there is any difference.

i am trying to sync my 160gb, but get an error message "the ipod cannot be synced. a duplicate file name was specified. it only syncs a small % of music.  any clues?

Hmm.  It could be an indication or a damaged or dying hard drive.  I would recommend doing a disk diagnostic on the iPod's HD using the instructions given by turingtest2 in this older thread.  He also covers what the resulting numbers indicate.

If necessary, post the resultings numbers and we can verify what the next steps to take.

Why am I receiving the following message when I try to move a song from my iTunes library into my iPod touch's music folder?
"The iPod cannot be synced. An unknown error occurred (13019)."
It was working just fine.  Then all of a sudden this error message popped up.

"The iPod "my iPod" cannot be synced. An unknown error occurred (-48)"
What should i do?! please help

    Hello danayy,
The cause of this error message could be linked to a corrupt song or perhaps an corrupt iTunes or iPod file.
    Maybe start by trying this:
    1. Plug in your iPod and close iTunes.
    2. Go to "My Computer". Click on the iPod drive once. Go to File, then click Properties.
Others have had luck with the solution provided in this Apple support document. It does say error 50 but may apply to your situation as well. It's worth a shot.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1539
If still no luck, it may be a good idea to [Restore|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1339] the iPod via iTunes.
    Hope this helps.

Hi, I am having a similar problem with an i pod. I recently bought a second hand i pod for my son's 6th birthday pressie, from a friend who had a mac pc. I have plugged the i pod into my pc which is windows xp, and the message comes up saying the i pod needs to be restored. Everytime I try to restore it, the error message 1418 comes up. I have followed ALL the links on the help pages to try and restore this thing, but NOTHING has worked. This i pod is heading back to the original owner if I can't get a solution from someone, and my son's birthday is getting closer and closer!! PLEASE someone HELP ME!!!!!

  • Error -48 "The iPod cannot be updated. An unknown error occu

ITunes wont want to update my Pod Photo, it says that "it cannot be updated, an unknown error ocurred" (-48)
it worked just yesterday, i tried reconecting it and restarting my PC but it wont work, i also changed the USB port it was in and still "Error -48"
    PLEASE HELP !!!

I have had exactly the same problem. I tried reformatting the iPod, reinstalling iTunes but it kept coming back. It only seems to happen on certain songs though,. When I added a load of other songs it then worked and then I went back to the song it was having problems with and it copied. Now the only problem is all the artwork is missing on the iPod even though it's there on iTunes. Grrr!!!

  • ERROR MESSAGE "The Ipod cannot be synced! The required disk cannot be found"

I have seen this error message listed before, but only with the suffle. I have tried some of the tips, like resetting the drivers. I am using Windows 7, with Itunes 10.1.2.17, and can't get it to work. If anyone knows anything else I can try to get it to work all the time I'd appreciate it. I am getting tired of doing the device manager trick all the time.

One more solution to this problem :
I tried the other ones mentioned above but they did not work for me on my laptop. So I thought I would try maybe a combination of something that was already mentioned.
    1. Opened up ITunes
    2. Plugged in my ipod into the computer. When I tried syncing like this it did not work so ..(read on #3.)
    3. I switched usb ports (although, I doubt that was the one that helped, but I mention it here in case it did)
    4. I unplugged my wireless mouse
    5. I did not plug my wireless mouse back into the computer like that other fellow mentioned. By doing this, the syncing started working. Weird, but it did.
I do hope that Apple will look at this bug so that it will be fixed properly. It is an expensive product, so having many people going through the same problem, especially if it is a gift (like in my case, I got this from my son) is not much fun. I was at the point of returning the product when I thought of trying this last thing beforehand.
I also hope that this method that worked for me might help others as well.

  • "The iPod cannot be updated. An unkown error occured. (-36)"

Hi, can someone help me with this? I've been browsing troubleshooter and topics for days and yet I can't figure out how to fix this one. This occured when I've got my computer reformatted and installed a new iTunes. I can't put anything on my iPod shuffle. The message "The iPod cannot be updated. An unkown error occured. (-36)" keeps on showing everytime I try to put songs on my iPod. I don't know what triggered this. Hope someone could shed some light. Thanks in advance!!

It is actually more simple than iTunes lets u believe.
If you just download an older version of iTunes, most likly the one u had before u updated ur computer, that should fix it and then you can update ur ipod and then get the newer version of iTunes.
Thats what i had to do when i got that exact same error just a few months ago.
If that dont work let me know.

    == Error -54 ==
From an OS9 reference, error -54 is a software lock on a file or a permissions error. (Some of the old codes still apply to OSX although there is no formal list of OSX error codes.)
First, try simply restarting your computer.

  • "The iPod **** cannot be updated. The required file cannot be found" Error

    Hello,
Upon doing a 'zero-all bits' reformatting of my 5G iPod with Disk Utility and using the 'Restore' feature in iTunes 7, every time I sync my iPod with iTunes, I get an error message after the sync in the form of
"The iPod ** cannot be updated. The required file cannot be found"
and photos, contacts, and calendars are not synchronizing. I tried a second 'Restore' attempt but to no avail. Previous to reformatting my 5G iPod, I've not seen this error message.
I would be grateful if someone could offer any clues. Many thanks.

    A little update.
Upon reinstalling iTunes 7, deleting my iTunes-related .plist files, and reparing permissions on my hard drive, I can now sync my contacts and calendars with my 5G iPod.
As for Photos, the "required file cannot be found" error seems to be due to the default setting in the 'Photos' tab, 'Sync photos from:' pull-down menu to 'iPhoto'. If I choose my 'Pictures' folder, photo synchronizing works, albeit including everything in my iPhoto library, including originals and modified versions of the photos.
I can only surmise that the default setting for synchronizing photos is somehow buggy in iTunes 7. I guess I'll just wait for an update.
