Error message when migrating Mail.

I've installed Yosemite on a 5 or 6 year old iMac. When I try and open mail it starts to migrate my old data and I get this error message:
Your Mail index has been damaged. To repair it quit Mail. Mail will repair the index the next time you open Mail.
First off, Mail is not open. When I try and open it, it starts to migrate again and I get the same error message.
Thanks for any help.

I recently upgraded from OS X 10.6 to 10.10. I encountered failure identical to the above post. Here was one possible workaround
Restore a recent backup of my computer (running 10.6) to an external drive.
Startup my computer from the external drive.
Upgrade to 10.7. (I suppose 10.8 or 10.9 might have worked.)
Launch "Mail" and allow it to upgrade mail from 10.6 to 10.7. Repeat this step for each user account of the computer.
Upgrade to 10.10.
Launch "Mail" and allow it to upgrade mail from 10.7 to 10.10. Repeat this step for each user account of the computer.
Thoroughly test to ensure all data is present.
Use a cloning app such as SuperDuper, clone from the external drive to the internal drive. This will erase the internal drive, so step #7 above is critical.
Variants of this procedure are possible. For example, this variant involving Migration Assistant also seems to work.
Restore a recent backup of my computer (running 10.6) to an external drive.
Startup a computer from the external drive.
Locate a computer running 10.7. (I suppose 10.8 or 10.9 might have worked.)
Use Migration Assistant to relocate your account(s) from the 10.6 external drive to the 10.7 computer.
Launch "Mail" and allow it to upgrade mail from 10.6 to 10.7. Repeat this step for each user account of the computer.
Thoroughly test to ensure all data is present.
Startup your computer in the already upgraded 10.10.
Delete your account(s) from 10.10. This will erase data, so step #6 above is critical.
Use Migration Assistant to relocate your account(s) from the 10.7 computer to your 10.10 computer.
Launch "Mail" and allow it to upgrade mail form 10.7 to 10.0. Repeat this step for each user account of the computer.
Summation: If you want to keep "Mail", don't upgrade directly from 10.6 to 10.10. Step up with something in between. Hopefully a future patch to 10.10 will make the upgrade from 10.6 easier.
More advanced: If you are tech savvy and know where files are stored in the Library, you can just replace many steps above with a process involving just moving the needed files. These seem to be located here in 10.6 and 10.7...
~/Library/Mail/
~/Library/Mail Downloads/
~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.*

Tip: If you launch the Mail app, stop and restart to avoid caching issues.

  • Error Message when e-mailing photo

I get this error message when trying to e-mail a photo from lightroom (I have a mac and am using gmail):  "An internal error has occurred: ?:0:  attempt to index field 'e-mail_photo_caption' (a nil value)."
I have validated my account but my e-mails cannot be sent- thanks for your help!

The build number for 4.1 is 829322, so it's definitely 4.0 you've got open there.  Perhaps you dock shortcut is pointing to an older version which should have been trashed?  LR was closed while the installer ran?
Personally I'd trash the app and run the installer again to try to rule that out.  I'd probably also repair permissions on the drive before running the installer, in case it's prevented from installing.

I'm sure a lot of work went into this feature, but...
Automated upgrades are always highly called-for but in practical terms almost never good to do.
Trying to save a little time in setting a brand new application up seems a little silly, given that it's not a given that all your preferences and settings from the old version will be directly applicable to the new version, and an automated transfer could copy some problems latent in your old settings to the new version.
Why not just install the new version afresh, then go through and review all the settings and make appropriate choices?  You need to get familiar with the new version anyway.
Then, if later you find out something's missing or seems different, you can always fire up the old version and note or save the settings and make the same settings in the new version.
This is more years of experience than I care to admit talking.

  • Error message when sending mail

I am using a G3 tower runnig OSX 10.3.9 with 768 megs of memory. I am using Mac Mail and had tried to send an email that I had accidentally attached the wrong file (12 megs). I realized my mistake after I hit send and I tried to delete it from the outbox. I did, but then it wouldn't let me send any emails. It just stayed in the outbox. I can still receive mail just fine. I researched your message boards and thought I came up with the solution; delete the outbox file from the library/mail/mailbox folder. I did that and then restarted. Then when I tried to send an email it gave me this error message"
"This message could not be delivered and will remain in your Outbox until it can be delivered.
5.7.1 This message has been blocked because it is from a RBL/ORDBL IP address.(connection black ip 66.205.147.67)"
My ISP tech support people are certain that this is a software problem and they won't help me. Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

This is not a software problem.
It appears your IP address or a range of IP addresses
including your IP address has been incorrectly
identified by the recipient's incoming mail server as
sending spam thru the account's SMTP server and has
    been black listed.
Is your computer IP address 66.205.147.67?
Have you tried sending a test message to yourself or
    to another email address?
Yes, that is my ip address. Yes, I have tried sending mail to myself and it stays in the outbox after giving me that error message. Is there anything I can tell my ISP to do? Or is it beyond their control?

  • Error message when changing Mail preferences

Whenever I change anything in the Preferences of Mail 2.0.8 even just opening the preferences and then closing them, I get an error message that says "Error Saving Preferences" " Writing your preferences to disk has failed. Your preferences may not have been saved. The permissions on ~/Library/Preferences may be wrong or your disk may be full." However, the change seems to have been made anyway as the expected new behavior occurs. The disk isn't full (haven't had it long enough!) and I don't know what to do about the preferences.
Is there anything I can do to find out what might be wrong BEFORE something horrible happens? Tomorrow is back up day. Should I change anything before I do it?

This particular issue is still a mystery to me. In the rare cases when I've seen it reported, none of the suggestions that one would expect should work did.
Open /Applications/Utilities/Terminal and type the following commands -- you can copy them here, one at a time, and paste them in Terminal to avoid having to manually type them:
    ls -ld ~/Library/Preferences
    ls -l ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist
    What do they say?
If you want to try re-creating the preferences file, be sure to do it properly, i.e.:
    1. Quit Mail.
    2. Make a backup copy of the ~/Library/Mail folder, just in case something goes wrong. You can do this in the Finder by dragging the folder to the Desktop while holding the Option (Alt) key down, for example. This is where all your mail is stored.
    3. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Preferences/. Locate the com.apple.mail.plist file and move it to the Desktop (to be deleted if this fixes the problem).
You'll have to set up your non-Mac accounts from scratch all over again. If given the option to import existing mailboxes or something like that, don't. Just enter the account information and Mail will automagically rediscover the data in ~/Library/Mail/ when done.
You'll also have to re-configure most of your settings in Mail > Preferences. For spam-related security reasons, the first thing you should do is go to Preferences > Viewing and disable Display remote images in HTML messages if it's enabled.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user's home folder. You can easily locate any of the folders referred to in this post by copying the file path here, doing Go > Go to Folder in the Finder, and pasting the file path there.

  • Error message when syncing mail accounts...

I recently started getting this error message while syncing on Windows XP running Outlook 2007.....
iTunes could not sync mail accounts to the iPhone "Nick DeGiovine's iPhone" because an error occurred remapping record identifiers.
Any assistance in resolving this issue would be greatly appreciated...!

    Mackinator,
All of the email addresses are with servers that have presets on the iPhone, and it appears the interaction between what you are syncing, and those presets is where you are having the error.
You may want to consider using some of those presets. For example bellsouth.net's email is now hosted by Yahoo. You can enter the settings for it in a few steps. When adding the account to the iPhone, choose the "Yahoo" presets. Put in the username as your entire @bellsouth.net email address. There will be @yahoo.com visible, but won't affect the functionality of the account, and people you send to won't see the @yahoo.com after your address. The Bellsouth account will now work, and should also get push notifications for your Bellsouth email via Yahoo.
For your GMail account, choosing GMail will configure the outgoing server to work on most networks. The exception is networks that block the majority of ports, such as some work environments.
This article contains more information on mail settings including the information about @bellsouth.net and Yahoo.

  • Error message when opening Mail

I did a routine software update. Now receive error message:
" You can’t use this version of Mail with this version of Mac OS X" You have Mail version 4.3 (1081/1082). It can’t be used on Mac OS X Version 10.6.6 (Build 10J567). For more information, click the Help button.
    Please help!!
    Thanks

    hmmm, that is odd.
Try downloading the 10.6.6 combo updater from here
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1349
and then mount the dmg (double click it) and run the updater again.
The reason I said it was odd is because, for some reason, you do have the older version of Mail, the current one is 4.4. The 10.6.6 updated should have installed the newer version.

  • Error message when sending mail : sending the message failed because you have exceeeded your sending limit"

I was trying to email a link from a webpage I loaded in safari.  The email sits in my outbox with a red exclamation point.  WIll not send.  Keeping getting an error message sending the message failed because you have exceeded your sending limit

"I keep getting a "you have exceeded your limit" on my email."
No explanation, makes no sense, it's happening with others.
I have to change (in my outgoing/unsent folder) my sending address from .mac to me.com. After reading the following helpful post:
To get outbox individual mails sent, Try going to outbox, opening each email to edit and change sending email to [email protected] by clicking arrow in from line.  If [email protected] account does not show, go to settings > mail > icloud account > add "[email protected]"  And, until this issue is resolved, set mail to send from [email protected]
(and you should be using smtp.mail.me.com)

  • Error message when syncing mail

when I went to sync my iphone today this message appeared.
itunes could not sync mail accounts to iphone. because an error occurred remapping record identifiers
I do not know how to fix this error or what could be wrong...
the iphone will not continue to sync after that.
    thanks

This was addressed in a previous post:
On the next sync, try going into the info tab in itunes and uncheck sync email accounts.
Then click apply in the bottom right corner.
Close itunes and disconnect the iphone.
Now open isync in your applications folder.
Open isync in your applications folder.
    Open the isync preferences.
    Reset sync history.
Once sync history is reset, you can try opening itunes, connect the iphone and try syncing again.
If the error still occurs, you can leave the option to sync accounts to the iphone unchecked since this does not mess with sending or receiving mail on the iphone.
    Hope this helps.

  • Error message when checking mail

When checking my yahoo on the phone, i get this: _*imap.apple.mail.yahoo.com incorrect_* It just started out of nowhere. I took my original phone back to the apple store saturday and this started monday night. It worked fine until then. I tried to reenter my password and it still doesn't act right. I get a similar message with my gmail account but it says pop instead of imap.
    Anybody have any ideas??
    thanks, Kelly

    Kelly,
You may want to try deleting those accounts off your iPhone and re-adding them again. To remove the accounts, go into Settings > Mail > tap on each account and tap on 'Delete Account' at the bottom. Then add those accounts back to the iPhone.
    Hope this helps,

  • Mail 2.1 and password error message when checking for incoming mail

I get a "password rejection" error message when Mail 2.1 tries to check for incoming messages and there are no messages to retrieve (I have an Earthlink account). I don't have any problems sending messages. When I send a test message to myself, Mail can retrieve it. When I check mail a few minutes later, I get the "password rejection" message from Earthlink. This also happens when I use MS Entourage (v10.1.6). I have been using Entourage for years and just recently started using Mail and this password problems seemed to appear recently (last few weeks).
Has anyone else experienced a similar problem? Since this happens in both Mail and Entourage, I don't know if it is Mac OS 10.4.10 or Earthlink. I tried Earthlink tech support and they were not much help.
    Thanks,
