Error message when trying to play music in  iTunes 8

I just upgraded to iTunes 8.0.1.11. When I now try to play any music (except for iTunes store purchases), I get an error message that says...
The song "x" could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it? Then shows the cancel and yes buttons.
I never had a problem with iTunes upgrades before. I see all the songs in my library, but just can't play them. All the music was playable and worked fine before I upgraded to this version. The only thing different I did notice after installing this, was it made a new "previous iTunes library" folder dated the day the upgrade was done. Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks.

there is a temporary fix that seem to have worked for everyone who has tried it. it's on a different discussion thread here: https://discussions.apple.com/message/15721591#15721591
Basically if you run iTunes 10.4 in 32 bit mode the plugins will work!

  • Error message when trying to play music on computer states The song ... could not be used because the original file could not be found.  However, my library shows how many items and the GBs used.  How do I locate the files?

When I try to play my iTunes music on my computer, an error message comes up and state "The song (title of song) could not be used because the original file could not be found.  Would you like to locate it?
When I click on Locate It, I cannot find where the music file may be located.  Does anyone have any suggestions?
This all occurred when I attempted to do a backup to an external hard drive.  Unbeknownest to me, the files did not copy over and do not appear on the external hard drive.
When I open my iTunes library, at the bottom of my music list it shows how many songs and the GBs, so it appears that the files are still there; however, cannot be located.
    Thank you.

    Hi angela dfromtx,
When tracks in iTunes display a it means the file cannot be located; it may have been moved or deleted. You'll have to locate the file manually if it is still available. For more information refer to the following article:

  • Error message when trying to play videos in iTunes

  • Error message when attempting to play music in Itunes

I posted this as a reply in another thread, but was asked to repost in a separate thread.
    =========================================================================
I recently bought an external hard drive and I thought I had moved all of my music to the external HD.
But I think the problem started when I was out of town and I took my computer but not my ex HD. I added some songs to my library and made the mistake of connecting my ipod to my computer.
My problem is that when I open Itunes and click on a song, a little exclamation mark appears beside the song title and I get an error message that says, "The song "xxxx" could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?"
When I click yes, I'm taken to a window where I can choose the ex hard drive and "locate" the song. The problem is, I've already done this once for the over 2000 songs in my library. It took 2 days to finish. I don't understand why it keeps asking me to do it again. Nothing has changed since the last time.
I've also tried the following solutions:
    1) downloaded idump and icopytrans programs to copy music from my ipod to my computer's itunes.
    2) uninstalled and reinstalled itunes
3)used "add folder to library" command to add each song and artist to itunes.
Nothing seems to work. Any suggestions?

I have the same problem but only with songs within the playlist. Please advise.

    Windows: Choose Edit > Preferences.
    2. Click the Advanced pane.

I am not sure what you mean by "Flash Player for steam"; the only Flash Player installers I know is the ActiveX (for Internet Explorer) and the plugin (for other browsers); you can find both at http://helpx.adobe.com/content/help/en/flash-player/kb/installation-problems-flash-player- windows.html#main-pars_header

  • Has anyone heard of error 45054 when trying to purchase music from itunes?

Has anyone run into error 45054 when trying to purchase music from itunes?

I had this problem just recently.
I discovered that the problem was located here: ROOT / Users / Shared  -- if you open that and the "adi" folder has a little red minus symbol in its corner, your permissions have somehow been lost. (If you can't see your root directory, open Finder Preferences and, under sidebar, check "Hard disks." That will make your root drive visible.)
If the "adi" folder has the red minus symbol, right-click the folder and select GET INFO.
Sharing & Permissions is probably set to "System: Read & Write | wheel: Read Only | everyone: No Access"
If so, your user account has no permissions, and that means iTunes can't use the folder properly.
To fix this, first unlock the folder using the padlock icon in the bottom-right corner of "get info." You will have to supply your admin password to do this.
Then click the little + sign in the bottom left corner to add a user, and select your user ID from the list of choices. Give yourself Read & Write permissions. (Alternatively, you could change the permissions of "everyone" to Read & Write; others have done that, but I was leery of doing it).
Re-lock the folder when you're done.
    Hopefully that will solve it.

  • Getting message "file cannot be found" when trying to play music in iTunes

When trying to play ANY music in my iTunes Library I get the message that the file containing the music cannot be found. I recently updated to the latest version of iTunes - is this the problem or is it something else?? I thought that at least the songs purchased from the iTunes Store would play but they do not. I receive the same message which asks if I want to attempt to locate the file. I click yes and that takes me to the iTunes Library which gets me nowhere. Anyone have any ideas????? I have used iTunes for years with no problems before this.

    Hi Patricia,
First, try Repairing Disk Permissions. Quit all open applications. Launch Disk Utility, it's in your Applications/Utilities folder. Select MacintoshHD 10.x.x in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab, then click Repair Disk Permissions. Only takes a few minutes to run, then Quit Disk Utility. Reboot your PBook and launch iTunes. See if you can play a track...
If not... with iTunes open, select iTunes Store, then from the Menu Bar, click Store/Authorize Computer and see if that works. If that doesn't work ...
Quit iTunes. Try dragging the com.apple.iTunes.plist file from the HD/Users/YourName/Library/Preferences folder to your Desktop. Launch iTunes and see if you can play tracks. If you can, drag that file back to the Preferences folder. If not, drag that file to the Trash, empty the Trash and reboot. It could be your iTunes preferences file is corrupted and needs replacing. Your Mac will create a new pref file for you the next time you launch iTunes.
    Hope something helps...

  • Error message when trying to play a movie

hi i am trying to watch a rented movie when i gat an error message suggesting trying later error number = (-42110) not sure why any help welcomed

    Hi there, annalese2012!
I've done a little research on that error code for you and it looks like it is mentioned in an article we have online, located here:
    iTunes: Possible iTunes Store errors
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1424
The article suggested for dealing with that error code can be found here, and it is the advanced iTunes Store troubleshooting article:
    iTunes: Advanced iTunes Store troubleshooting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3297
It looks like this section in that article specifically has the information you might need:
    "Error 42023" through "Error 42408"
These alerts might occur when trying to authorize iTunes or during launch when iTunes checks for authorization information.
Install the latest iTunes from apple.com/itunes/download/
    Remove the SC Info folder.
If that does not resolve the issue, see iTunes: "Error 42408" or "Error 42404" after upgrading to iTunes 9.0.3.
Thanks for coming to the Apple Support Communities!
    Regards,
    Braden
