Error msg: time machine couldn't complete the backup to time capsule

I did a first time back up of my imac with time capsule; now when I try to back up a second time the error msg says can't do it.  When I try to access time capsule thru time machine; it won't let me. Any suggestions?

Sorry this is where it all gets unimpressive.. you need to reboot the TC.. it has gone to sleep and forgotten to respond or the Mac has lost it and doesn't know where to find it.
The bug has been our major issue in this forum since Mountain Lion arrived on the scene.
See C12 for more details..
http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
But a simple reboot of TC, or restart of whole network, in correct order.. modem.. router/TC ... clients 2min gap is usually enough.

  • Time Machine couldn't complete the backup to "Time Capsule. The backup disk image /Volumes/Data/MacBook Pro.sparsebundle could not be created (error 60)"

We are Mountain Lion using Time Machine to backup to Time Capsule. When the backup tries to run, an error appears after a couple of minutes saying "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer." Then an error shows up saying "Time Machine couldn't complete the backup to "Time Capsule. The backup disk image /Volumes/Data/MacBook Pro.sparsebundle could not be created (error 60)"
I low level reformatted the Time Capsule and that didn't fix it. I then tried using Time Machine on another computer to back up to that same Time Capsule and it worked- so I'm doubting it's the Time Capsule.
I've noticed that when Time Machine runs, that a  folder called Data  at /Volumes/ appears while Time Machine is trying to back up. I think it's making the sparsebundle to transfer to the Time Capsule.
However, after a couple of minutes- it comes back saying that the disk is unreadable.
I think it's something wrong with either creating the sparsebundle or opening the disk image that seems to be a part of the Time Machine backup process on the local drive.
I am able to create a disk image with Disk Utilitiy without any problem on that system. I've repaired the disk and disk permissions with Disk Utility and replaced the directory with Disk Warrior. I've trashed what preference files I could find and restarted. I've completely removed the backup destination from the computer and added it back again.
    Help!
    Thanks,
    Neil

Yes, exactly.  It makes one sparse bundle per Mac.
It's possible the TC's disk is too full for a new sparse bundle, or there may be some other problem.
Via the Finder, locate the existing sparse bundle (see the pink box in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #17 if you're not sure how to do that).  See how large it is (plus how large anything else that may be there).  If the total is very near the size of the TC, that may be the problem.
If not, a clue may be lurking in your logs.  Use the widget in #A1 of Time Machine - Troubleshooting to display the backup messages from your logs.  Locate the backup in question (probably the first one displayed), then copy and post all the messages here.

  • HT3275 I am received an error on my Time Capsule   which states the backup disk image  "Volumes/Data/MacBook Pro. sparse bundle? is already in use.  so time machine couldn't complete the backup to time capsule - any suggestion

I've received an error message    Time Machine couldn't complete the backup to Time Capsule,   the backup disk image  /Volumes/Date/....MacBook Pro.sparsebundle" is already in use.  Any suggestions as to what I can do to fix it?

I've got mine working again by deleting a partial backup that was on the Time Capsule.
I mounted the backup sparsebundle, and then browsed the content and found a filestucture named <timstamp>.inProgress. I removed that and the followed the tip to disconnect described above. That did the trick for me.

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter the word "Starting" (without the quotes) in the String Matching text field. You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard." Note the timestamp of the last such message. Clear the text field and scroll back in the log to that time. Select the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear. Copy them (command-C) to the Clipboard. Paste (command-V) into a reply to this message.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don't post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

  • Time Machine couldn't complete the backup to "Time Machine Backups".  The backup disk is not available.

I have received an error message today - Time Machine couldn't complete the backup to "Time Machine Backups".  The backup disk is not available.
I am using a WD 1.5tb  Help!!!  Everything is on there and the files are not showing.  The WD SmartWare icon is on the Desktop but the Time Machine icon is not.  When I save a file I open the Time Machine file and save it in there.  What do I do?  How do I get my files back??  I do not keep anything on the macbook pro.  Help PLEASE!!!

    Hi Yaann,
Thank you for your reply.  Yes I did try that, but no luck.
After several hours of calls to a very unhelpful WD and further calls to Applecare, there was nothing anyone could do.  Out of frustration when holding the WD 1.5TB hard drive, I smacked it (NOT recommended).  Well, to my surprise the WD reappeared on my devices list.  Let me tell you, I pulled my files off as fast as I could on to my MacBook Pro.  I breathed a huge sigh of relief when I confirmed that everything transferred back to the MacBook Pro fine.  I spoke with the Applecare tech and he talked me through the set up on a new Lacie hard drive.
What I can say is that after further research into external hard drives and now personal experience - Lacie is the top of the line and you get what you pay for.  I would NEVER ever recommend a WD to anyone.  Given one, I would still through it away.
    I was LUCKY.
I must say the support and understanding I received from Applecare was outstanding!!  I would never own a apple product without applecare and from long term experience it is worth every penny.
    All the best,

  • Time Machine couldn't complete the backup to "Time Capsule".The backup disk image "/Volumes/Data-1/Macintosh.sparsebundle" is already in use.

When I back up my macbook pro to time capsule 3TB, this appears:
"Time Machine couldn’t complete the backup to “Time Capsule”.The backup disk image “/Volumes/Data-1/Macintosh.sparsebundle” is already in use."
and I'm not able to back up.  What do I do?

As noted in the link I posted, that's fine if you're the only user logged-on to the only Mac using the TC's disks (internal and/or USB externals).  If not, that may corrupt other data being written, especially other backups.

    I keep getting the message:
Time Machine couldn't complete the backup to "xxx's Time Capsule"
The backup disk image "/Volumes/Data/MacIntosh.sparsebundle" is already in use.
What changes can I make to have Time Machine complete its backup properly?

Pull the power cord from the back of the Time Capsule
    Count to ten
Plug the power cord  back into the back of the Time Capsule
Wait a full minute for the Time Capsule to restart
    Try a backup again

  • Time Machine couldn't complete the backup to "Time Capsule ".  I keep getting this error on my macbook pro

I havent had a back up for a while and keep getting the error message.  Time Machine couldn't complete the back up to "time Capsule"
    Any thoughts?

It is usually just the normal poor networking between Mountain Lion and TC.. please restart your whole network in order.. from off.. modem.. TC.. clients. 2min gap between each.
If you need further help get the actual error message. Pondini has a great listing of the main errors. Yours is probably C12 or C17..

Give your TC a wee reboot now and then.. maybe daily until Apple give us a bug fix on the firmware or OS.

  • HT201250 Time machine couldn't complete the backup to time capsulate  error-1

The backup disk image “/Volumes/Data/Macintosh.sparsebundle” could not be accessed (error -1).

There's another resolution here that might also work regarding the -1 error. That seems to relate to Western Digital SW that is remnant on the Mac. Did you or another user ever use one of their drives?
If so and the SW is still on the Mac then remove it and attempt your backup again. If that is not the case then follow the steps in mende1's link, that website is marvellous.
