Error: Not Enough RAM to Open Small Files

MacBook5,2
Macintosh OSX 10.6.3
4GB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce 9400M - 256MB
Adobe Photoshop CS4 Extended (11.0.1)
I am rendering TIFF files out of Maya that are 11880 x 3400 pixels.  The file size ranges between 100 - 160 MB.  Whenever I attempt to open one of these images in Photoshop, I receive this error: "Could not complete the Open command because there is not enough RAM."
I just ran Adobe Update and I have all the latest updates.
I deleted my Photoshop preferences and restarted Photoshop.
I have my Scratch disk set to an internal solid state disk with 30 GB of free space.
I have Photoshop's RAM set to 3000MB.
Despite all of this, I still receive the "Could not complete the Open command because there is not enough RAM" error every time I attempt to open the images rendered out of Maya.
The images from Maya are completely normal 8bit TIFF files with neither an alpha channel nor a depth channel.  I can successfully open them in After Effects, but this is useless to me.  I need to edit them individually in Photoshop.
Photoshop's error is clearly not due to file size.  I have HDR panoramas with dimensions greater than 11880 x 3400 that go up to 1GB in file size that I can open and work on in Photoshop without any problem.
Why is Photoshop not playing nicely with these TIFF images?

I still want to a solution to the above problem, but I have found a temporary work-around using After Effects.
Import the image into After Effects and then save the image as another file using Composition --> Save Frame as --> File.
As I said earlier, After Effects is capable of reading the files that are coming out of Maya even though Photoshop is not.
When I use After Effects to save the image as a TIFF, Photoshop is now able to open the new TIFF file.
This, however, is only a temporary work-around.  It is not optimal to resave the image before I start working on it.  I am probably loosing some precious data in the After Effects conversion.  As a matter of fact, the images tend to be 40MB smaller in size when I export them through After Effects, even though I am using the same file type, no compression, and still 8 bits.
Now, back to the problem: What is wrong with Photoshop?

  • Photoshop CS4 - Not enough RAM to open a file???

I get this wonderful "Not Enough RAM" message, while trying to open a big TIF file (over 100 Mb). Till now it happened with big files that were saved in Windows. All other programs, including Photoshop CS3 opens the files just great. Resaving files in any other app helps, but this thing is a joke - I'm thinking going back to CS3... : (
    Thanks.

According to many different discussions, nobody, even Apple, can really tell If it is necessary to defragment OS X drives,
This is not about defragmenting the drive.  I am attempting to make you aware that you will always have fragmentation on your drive in a one-drive laptop, no matter what you do.
Photoshop needs to find a single, contiguous, non-fragmented chunk of drive space to create the scratch disk.  On a one-drive machine you will never, ever know exactly what the largest, unfragmented chunk of drive space you have at any given instant is, but you can bet your life on the fact that it will be a lot less than the total amount the Finder shows you.
As I just typed, your drive will inevitably be fragmented even before you boot up, and the swap files of the OS will further fragmented once it's running.
You can use an external drive for scratch, just make sure it's formatted as Mac HFS+ Extended and NOT case-sensitive.  Do a Get Info (Command I) on the icon of the external hard drive in the Finder and check "Ignore Ownership of this Drive" if necessary.
Photoshop creates the scratch drive the instant you go to open an existing file or create a new one, setting its size on assumptions it makes based on your workflow history, not just the size of the file you're opening.  Thus, it is possible that the scratch disk sizes for CS3 and for CS4 will be different on your machine.  This will be the case if you have worked on bigger files or with more layers. etc, on one version than on the other one, even for the very same file.  The difference could be dramatic.

  • Illustrator CS5 Error - "Not enough memory to save the file"

    Hey guys,
I'm experiencing difficulties in exporting website from .AI to .PSD using Illustrator CS5.1 under Windows7 Home Premium 64bit. The error message says "Not enough memory to save the file".
I can assure you that i've got enough memory for scratch disks and my computer is powerful enough to handle this operation. The funny thing is that i am able to export the very same .Ai file using Illustrator CS5.1 under Windows XP 32bit on different PC.
I've tried to find a solution online, but it gave no satisfying results so far. So, i think the problem comes from the operating system, but i don't know how to fix it... any suggestions?
    Thanks, Steve.

Sad to say I'm running into the same problem with a 40KB file.....
(download the following file and use it)
    http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/8/8c/2.4_GHz_Wi-Fi_channels_%28802.11b%2Cg_W LAN%29.svg
    File -> Open
    Modify the file slightly:
    doubleclick the image
remove the channel 14 info  (the text block "14" & "2.484",  the T shaped path, the dotted half circle path)
drag a square around the "Channel", "Center Frequency", "(GHz)" text blocks and hold left shift and press the left arrow until the selected items are tighter to the rest of the image
select the bold base line, grab the right middle point to shrink the line (dragging from right to the left) until 'intersect' shows up, then release
click the top left "Back One Level" arrow 2 times so that you are back to the top level (out of isolation mode)
File -> Export -> Choose PSD

  • CS2 Not enough memory when opening a file

When I try to open a EPS file in CS, I get the Not enough memory dialog but if I open it in the trial version of CS4, it opens easily and uses half the ram compared to CS2 before it brings up the dialog. Is there a fix for this for CS2?
    Thanks
    Ryan

Processexplorer and task manager, I have installed the update, using CS2 my machine grinds to a halt and doesnt open the image - CS2 ram usage when trying to open the image 690mb compared to cs4 trial 480mb with the image opening and barely any performance issues. Any image of 80mb seem to not open.

  • Not enough ram while opening a 122 MB PDF file in CS6 x64 on Win 7 x64 with 32 GB RAM (about 20 free) with SSD disk (enough free) an Intel i7 3,5

the pdf file is local and I get the same error using PS CS6 in x64 as x86.
    the same after reboot.
the same after changing ram-using maximum inside PS to 100 %

Nobody can tell you anything without exact technical details like what the PDF contains or how it was generated, what your scratch disk settings are and so on. The file could simply have a gigazillion lines or something like that and may never properly rasterize.

  • Message- Not enough RAM to open Classic

For many months we have successfully opened Classic (set for auto open on booting OSX 10.4.7).
Suddenly we get an message asking if we want to continue opening Classic with insufficient RAM (needs at least 128 megs).
But we have 768 megs of installed SDRAM, just as in the past.
Computer is Dual 800MHz Power PC G4 (OS 9.2.2 and OX 10.4.7)
    768 Megs SDRAM
    80 gig HD
Activity monitor shows about 400 megs of unused SDRAM when we get the insufficient RAM message while attempting to open Classic.
Can't get Classic even starting to boot.
    Any help will be appreciated.

    PowerPC G5   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Tom: See whether this excerpt from Mac Help sheds any light on your problem:
Adjusting the memory allocation for the Classic environment
Some Mac OS 9 applications make use of "temporary memory" on your hard disk in order to work faster. When you start the Classic environment, Mac OS X sets aside a temporary memory area for the use of Mac OS 9 applications. The default size of the temporary memory area is about 128 MB (less on computers with less than 128 MB of RAM). Some applications may need more than the default amount of temporary memory.
On the other hand, increasing the size of temporary memory decreases the amount of memory that's available for applications. Some Mac OS 9 applications work best if the temporary memory size is reduced to free up more memory for the application.
If you know that your application needs more than the default amount of temporary memory, or more application memory, you can change the temporary memory size in Classic preferences.
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences and click Classic.
Hold down the Option key, and then click Memory/Versions.
    Click the Adjust Memory button.
Drag the memory allocation slider to the right to increase the size of temporary memory or drag it to the left to decrease it.
You can adjust the temporary memory allocation from about 48 MB to about 512 MB.
To restore the default size of the temporary memory, click Default.
    Click Apply.
If the Classic environment is running, you must stop it and restart it for this setting to take effect.
IMPORTANT: Finding the optimum ratio of temporary memory and application memory can be tricky because there are many factors that affect it. It's a good idea not to change the temporary memory size unless you are confident you need to.
If you find that the temporary memory for Classic on your computer has been set to less than 128MB, that may explain the none-too-helpful error message you've been seeing when you start Classic. Perhaps resetting it to 128MB will put an end to them.

  • Not enough RAM error while running batch command

Bug in photoshop creative cloud. When using the "batch" editing feature after 5 images being edited the same way (batch processing) an error code pops up. "Error:not enough ram" and then i have to restart which does the same thing over and over again. Running a quad core i7 1tb hard drive 16gb of memory so there should be no error code. Help please and if anyone has a fix besides and update could you email me at <edit to remove email address> Thanks! Cant post this in the photoshop.com community because of another bug. I have done everything from creating new scratch disks off of other hdd's allotting more ram to go to psd (since i can only use 3255mb because of a useless limiter on photoshop) to rebooting computer and nothing helps at all.

This error is somewhat generic.  Can mean not enough free disk space, insufficient page file, ram, or buffer error.
Best not to include your e-mail as it opens you to spam.

  • Not enough memory to open file NOKIA 6120

    Hi !
I have nokia 6120. I have also sandisk micro sd card (mobile premiere) with 1GB storage. I transfered a flash movie of 20Mb and another one of 11Mb into the card memory. I tryed to play it with flash player that is installed on the phone. When i select to play it from the file manager , it gives me a error: not enough memory to open file. On the phone i have 11 Mb of memory ow, but the movie is located on the sd card. I dont know why it gives me this error. I think its mean that i even cant play any of the other videos from the card ... for example a divx or avi movie !???
Anybody have the same problem ? I hope that there is a fix for this otherwise i have a big card that I cant use for such storage.... that will be a big shame.
    Regards

I deleted some game and gain 1MB of Ram. Yes its quite low...strange. I need to check some friend phone which have the same type. I think that more stuff installed on phone means less ram memory available, although only some of them are rally active in stand by or none of them...I asked another friend if he have the same problem. I dont know exactly what is the model of his phone, but i now he have a symbian 3rd phone s60...the first one of this s60 3rd generation. He have the same problem when talking about opening the swf videos. I think that the phone try to fill the whole movie into his ram and then play it....so it doesnt work. When opening the avi videos..using smart movie player for symbian...no problems at all. Also using the original real player works ok, but the real player that is integrated does not support avi formats. It support mp4 format and some other. The smart movie player support avi formats, divx, xvid, mp4... I chose smart movie player because it has more functionalities then nokia real player. try it.

  • When opening files "Not enough memory to load TIFF file."

Mac just had a new build of OSX 10.6.8.
Total memory 4gb of which over 3gb is free.
Open any image gives a memory error "Not enough memory to load TIFF file"

Open the linked tiff file(s) in photoshop, and resave with LZW Compression (OFF I Believe). I know you can place an lzw tiff adn usually works fine, but I believe i had this in the past and turned it off/chanegd the RLE settings and Illustrator was made happy. Also look for if the image is  photoshop >> image >> 8 bits/channel.

  • Illustrator CS3 - "Not enough memory to place the file."  Help!!!???

I have a new machine running XP Pro 64.  Intel i7 processor, 12 gb ram.
I am trying to place a fairly small Photoshop image (with layers) into Illustrator CS3.  I have done this countless times with XP 32 bit os.
But now, I cannot place even a small Photoshop image into Illustrator... I keep getting the error "Not enough memory to place the file."
I tried the suggestion of 'right-clicking' the Illy launch icon and going to properties/compatibility and then selecting "Run this program in compatibility mode for..."  and then I check marked Windows XP.
Someone else said this worked in Vista 64.....but it DID NOT work for XP 64.....dang it.
    Any suggestions???
    Thanks

So, why won't it work on XP 64 bit? Is this a case of 'the mac os is just better?"
Talk about flame bait -- You trying to start the platform wars again? ;-D
Can anyone tell me if they can place a Photoshop image from WINDOWS 7 64 bit OS into Illustrator without issue?  We're talking 'PLACE' .... not paste.
Don't know about Windoze 7; but that operation works in Vista x64. XP x64 is
quite flaky at times. It was never finished IMHO.
Sure would like to know.  I'd upgrade if it made the difference.

  • Not Enough memory to open the Illustration

    Hi,
I saw in the site http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/832/cpsid_83270.html
that below problem exist. Is that been solved. Is there any alternative way to perform the action.
Error "Not Enough memory to open the Illustration"  when opening a placed image InDesign CS4 with Illustrator hidden
    Thanks

Firstly, you may apply free to try product, it would repair your problem illustrator file and to import it to new .ai file with saving all content. This tool is named Illustrator Repair Toolbox. Prove it for free from here: http://www.illustrator.repairtoolbox.com/
    This solution from adobe blog
    Make Illustrator visible.
This issue appears only on Mac OS 10.6.x. The error message sometimes occurs when you drag files from the Finder to the Illustrator icon in the dock. The error can also occur when you right-click an Illustrator SmartObject in Photoshop and choose Edit Contents.
As ultimate measure you have to upgrade your MAC OS.

  • Not enough RAM - 3D

Everytime I try opening an *.OBJ or an *.3DS file in Photoshop CS5.1, Photoshop says it hasn't enough RAM for opening the file.
I have an Intel i5 CPU, 8GB RAM and an nVidia Geforce GT640 2GB. And as OS Windows 7 64 Bit.
I've tried adjusting the RAM in edit>preferences>performance, but it doesn't work.
    Thanks in advance.

Meh, Sketchup... Older versions of it output the most atrocious OBJ files I've ever seen and that seems to apply here. Google fixed it in 2011 or so... Short of taking an intermediate step by e.gf. opening teh files in Blender and re-exporting from there, i see no good way to avoid these issues.

  • Illustrator can't open my saved file because there is not enough RAM.  Can someone help me?

I was working all last night on artwork using Illustrator and now I cannot get it to open.  The message reads that there is not enough RAM.  This is after a long pause of waiting for illustrator to read the file.  The file is 37 MB large, so it doesn't seem that daunting for my MacBook Pro with 8 GB of RAM.  Any thoughts?  Other files open with no problem.
After I hit ok on the message (Not enough RAM), it seems to be trying to work on something in the Illustrator file and then repeats saying there is not enough RAM.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks, there was a message on my file that suggested I save it with the PDF compatibility, but I am not able to do that till I get in.  I am at the Apple store now to see if they can help me out.  It would be sad to lose all that inspiration I put into my artwork.
Thanks for your help, I will need to be careful how much I load on one Illustrator file in the future.

Even if you have 5GB of RAM, PSE can't make use of all of it because it is likely to be a 32 bit program (if not 16 bit).  PSE2 is very old made for Windows 2000 or Windows 98 but this was all before my time so my facts must be wrong here.
I am amazed that you managed to install it on Windows 7 in the first place.
