Error on Importing Word document into RH7

I am attempting to import Word docs into RoboHelp7.  The first several documents are imported and saved into the project without incident. However, one file causes an error: "An error occurred while trying to save data to : <RH project name> <5>.  The same error occurs each time I attempt to import this particular file; the error message will not disappear when I click on OK and whole project has to be closed.  Thank you.

Thank you for your prompt response.  I tried importing sections of the word document as you suggested, but I was not able to isolate the error. I confess that after repeated errors and shutdowns, I discontinued this troubleshooting, lest it cause any damage to the original project files.
Instead, I opened a new project, and imported the Word doc into that project.   Then I imported these HTML files into my main project. It was not graceful, but the end result is good, with all the links and formatting preserved.
As other Word docs have since been imported into this project without incident, perhaps it was a fluke/bug in this one document.
I appreciate your help in resolving the situation.

    We imported a simple Word document into RoboHelp 7 HTML, as a
    new project (from scratch).
    Everything worked out pretty well (afterall, this was just a
    simple Word document), and we expect to have to tweak the styles,
    etc. That is understood.
    However, the images that were embedded in the Word document
    (as opposed to saved to disk, and only linked to the Word document)
    do not look very nice in the RoboHelp 7 HTML project topics.
    When we browse to the iamge folder, and view the actual image
    files, these images do not look too bad. But in the Design View,
    the images have display issues (solid color bars on the
    sides/top/bottom of the images). When we compile to a Single Source
    Layout (except PDF), the images look fine again. When we create
    Printed Documentation, even for the best PDF-settings, the images
    look terrible -- smudgy, like low resolution quality).
    1) Except for storing the images outside of the Word document
    before importing, and then manually linking them back into the
    imported RoboHelp HTML files, is there a way to maximize the
    quality of the imported Word images in RoboHelp HTML?
    2) Why doe the images look worse in Printed Documenation
    (PDF), even for the highest PDF settings, than for the other Single
    Source Layouts?
    While I am typing, I realized that we should try to include
    the images in Word via a link to the image files on disk. Perhaps
    then RoboHelp will not actually modify the image files during
    import. I will report back about this one.

    Chances are, the different treatments of the space are due to whether the space was included in the bolding of the word in MS Word.
    Additionally, since Word files contain much underlying binary code (macros and such), your security settings might or might not be playing well with the Word stuff.
    Are you importing the Word file from a network location, or from your local machine? Network traffic might be partially impacting the import, too.
    Bottom line? You'll probably need to clear all formatting in the Word file and redo the formatting properly. To test this, cut a couple of pages into a new Word file, clear and redo the formatting in Word, import the Word file into another RH project, and see what results you get.
    To clear the formatting:
    Select text.
    On the Home tab, in the Font group, click Clear Formatting.
    Redo the formatting, being careful to not format the spaces.

    2. I imported a Word (Windows XP) doc to create my robohelp
    project.
    I am new to RoboHelp, so please bear with me...
    I had imported a word document into a project for HTML Help.
    I had mapped some IDs to create context sensitive help to work with
    our application. When the word doc is updated and I re-import it,
    the topics are duplicated in the TOC. (I normally get updates of
    this document from another department and we need to convert it to
    HMTL help for our application).
    How do I fix this or prevent this from happening? (Other than
    delete the old project, create a new project, and import updated
    word document since I would have to remap all the IDs again.)

    Sorry, I have to disagree with your estimate, for the main
    reason that all those reviewers will be manipulating the Word
    document with their own formatting quirks, which will only serve to
    corrupt the doc file and make its repeated importation increasingly
    problematic.
    Remember, you're looking to convert a binary file with tons
    of macros into HTML code, essentially a flat text file. I suspect
    that remapping the IDs will end up being the least of your problems
    as you go further into repeated review cycles.

  • Error when importing Word documents

    Hallo
    I'm using RoboHelp 8 from the Technical Communication Suite.
    When I try to import a doc/docx file for my HTML help I get the message: 'The Import Word Document Wizard cannot locate a supported version of Microsoft Word. Please install Microsoft Word 2000 or newer.'
    Actually I have Microsoft Word 2010 installed in its default path.
    Do I have to set some particular options? Some days ago I had my PC replaced with a new one and I had to reinstall all of my programs. I think I've missed some settings.

    I was working with Office 2010 and RH8 almost without problems with my old PC. Maybe the colleagues from our EDP department have installed a different version of MS Word (a newer service pack?).

    I created a 400+ page document in Word 2007 and imported it into RoboHelp 8 (HTML, not RoboHelp for Word). In many places, the space between a bold word and a non-bold word is no longer there.   • Importing Word documents into Robohelp 8: topic content is in a text box

    Hi
    I think I am doing standard stuff, but I have never used the import from Word function in RoboHelp before...
    I used  file > import to import a Word document, paginating on heading1 and heading2. All is fine, except that all the text of every topic is contained within a text box.
    Can I stop this happening? (Or fix it easily?)
    (I hope it is not relevant, and don't want to go into this unless it is relevant: but the Word document was actually the printed output from another RoboHelp project.)

    What I am thinking is that any Word import needs some cleaning up and the HTML is generally not good, blame Word for that. By importing the topics, you avoid that.
    The document is not exactly tagged as "from RH" and other products may well create documents in the same way. Bottom line is the way the document is created in Word seems to mean you get this problem in RH. It would probably be quite easy to find a workaround for that but you are still left with a Word import rather than a better RH import.
    These forums will testify to the number of problems Word imports can cause because of Word's code.

  • Error when importing Word document

    I am having a problem importing a Word document. This is the
    first time I have experienced the problem.
    Partway through the import (it appears to be attempting to
    open the Word document) I get a message:
    A file error has occurred.
    Try one or more of the following:
    *Check the disk drive to make sure the disk is properly
    inserted
    *Check the disk or the disk drive to make sure there is not a
    hardware problem
    *Check the network connections.
    Things I have tried:
    1. Reboot of the machine that has both RoboDemo (V5) and the
    Word document.
    2. Renaming the Word document to something with a shorter
    name.
    3. Taking out large sections of the document and then
    retrying. Repeat until the document is empty.
    I have searched this forum as well as the general web for any
    information. Help! I'm on a tight deadline and I just can't kill
    any more time screwing around with this.

    I started the import just before going to bed last night and
    it was still running when I killed it this morning. It did not
    error with the message you got but I did get a Microsoft Word
    message:
    The server application, source file, or item cannot be found.
    Make sure the application is properly installed.
    The import was stuck on the graphics under Metadata Format. I
    don't know if the callouts you had created in Word were the cause
    but you cannot have those in RoboHelp HTML which is going to give
    you a problem as the document is heavy on them.
    Back to the import. Is there something in your document that
    is pointing to a server? Is the template on a server or is your
    normal template on a server instead of being local?
    Also I notice you said RoboDemo. Did you mean that?

  • Help with image file names when using Import Word document feature

    Hello,
    I am using File >> Import >> Word document into an HTML template.  If the Word document contains images, the images are written to the directory specified in my Site Default Image Folder.  Here is my question: As I was teaching myself the Import function, one time the images were automatically named to match the page name.  So for example, if my page is named Create.html, the images would be named Create_image001.jpg, Create_image002.jpg, etc.  I can't remember how I enabled this feature (or maybe I was dreaming) but if anyone knows how to control the name of the images imported from MS Word, please let me know.  I've searched and Googled for hours and can't find a way to control the image file names.

    I was hoping that this would be fixed in the 10.8.2 upgrade but it has not.  Anyone have any luck?  Earlier today I was trying to write a paper and navigating between 10 pdfs was a nightmare without being able to hover my mouse for the titles like I used to. 

  • RH8 error:  Can't import word document or PDf

    I just upgraded from RH7 to RH8.  I am running Win7 64bit.   I also opened RH HTML, which is what I used in RH7.  I have a relative small project and I am trying to import a new word document into the current project.  I am now trying to upload a word document.  When I first open the current project, RH8 asked me to convert to new format and I clicked yes.  Here are my steps to upload a word document: 
    click on file
    Click on Import Word Doc (I've tried Microsoft Word 2010, Microsoft Word 2007, Adobe PDF 9)
    The Content Setting popup comes up; I've clicked Next.
    Then clicked Finished.
    Then an error comes with Word:
    If I do a pdf:  I get this error:

    Are you facing the issue consistently with any word doc you try to import?
    Is this browser specific? Please try the same with any browser other than the one you have already tried with. If so kindly report the browser and its version info
    Is this system specific? If yes please include the information of the OS and it's version.Have you tried the same from a different machine.
    The flash player version you are currently using?
    Hope these  n questions don't seem overwhelming but this would be really helpful for us in isolating the issue. Thanks for the patience.

  • RH8 evaluation - Server Busy error when trying to import Word document

    Hi,
    I downloaded RH8 trial version. When I try to import a Word document (that RH7 imports with no problem", I get a
    This action cannot be completed because the other program is busy. Choose 'Switch To' error message.
    It opens the Windows start menu but I can't really switch to anything.
    The Word file is not open.
    I asked someone else to download and try the same thing and they got the same result.
    Any idea how to solve this problem?
    Is there a patch that fixes it? Known problems with specific features in Word?

    I am a new user to InDesign, using version CS6, I would like to know if there is an easy way to import a MS word document into InDesign. The document is about 1000 pages and contains text, images and tables.

    To make a long story short, the Kindle Plugin has a long-standing problem with tables and/or more than a certain limit of hyperlinks.  Since these problems have persisted for at least 2 years now, I must conclude that there are organizational problems on the Kindle Plugin project.  The possibilities include too many junior programmers, not enough attention to the project, not enough positive incentive to make the plugin work and any number of possible management weaknesses.  It took our JPL team about 3 years to put Spirit and Opportunity on Mars, so there's no way a technical problem could be standing this long in the way of the Kindle Plugin handling tables or any number of embedded hyperlinks - nor, for that matter, a Word source document of any reasonable size whatsoever.  One might also cite a lack of competition in this new business sector but then you'd have to ask, do they want to play in the eBook market or don't they?  Companies like Apple succeed by ignoring the competition and in this way end up setting the standards for decades to come.

    Colum has good advice. Also, since you're new to this, there
    are a few curiosities that occur that can be puzzling to newcomers.
    If you have graphics in your Word docs (screenshots, etc.) a new
    folder will automatically be created. So if the name of your Word
    doc is MYDOC.DOC, graphics will be placed in a new folder called
    MYDOC_Files.
    Another "hitchhiker" to the process is the creation of a CSS
    file automatically created for each Word doc. After the import you
    have the choice to reassign any style sheet you like, regardless of
    the CSS originally linked.
    Another tip if you're new to importing, go to Peter Grainge's
    excellent site.

  • Can no longer import Word files into InDesign

    For many months I have been importing Word files into InDesign CS3 (Mac OSX 10.4.11) with no trouble, but I started having a problem yesterday.
    When importing a 17-page Word file with 16 footnotes, I got none of the text and only the footnote numbers. This is what I get in InDesign:

    These are the things I've tried already: restarting, deleting preferences, changing the import options, using CS2, importing someone else's Word file, importing a Word file that I imported successfully a couple of months ago. None of this works.
    It has been suggested that I save the Word file as rtf, but since I have 200 files to import and I'm using Word's character styles for italics, bold, small caps, etc., I'd rather try to fix this problem.
    Can someone help?

    I am using indesign CS2 and i'm trying to import a Word document into a new chapter for a book i'm laying out. it's about 30 pages, but there are at least 80 foot notes. i'm able to get about 1/2 of the document with the footnotes to flow correctly, then EVERYTHING disappears. the only way i've been able to get the remaining text to appear is by adding characters to the text. i'll hit "vvvvvvvvvvvv" a bunch of times and "magically" a little chunk of text and it's footnotes appears. then the ole disappearing act happens. so i do it again. i'm able to get all the text to appear finally, but when i delete the "vvvvvvvvvv" from the places i inserted them, the text disappears again. i have no idea why this is happening or how to fix it. any ideas?
