Error on Mac: An error occurred when attempting to change modules.

Installed the trial successfully. Tried to launch the application, and this error message came up. When I click on OK, only minimal parts of the Lightroom interface show up.
If I log in as another user, the application functions normally. I've deleted my Lightroom prefs (~/Library/Preferences/com.adobe.Lightroom.plist) and library (~/Pictures/Lightroom) and the problem continues to occur. Problems also occur if I log-in without Startup items (holding down shift.)
Any suggestions appreciated.
OS X 10.4.9/PPC.

This has come up as a problem for me TWICE now. It's extremely frustrating. Here is what I know, which hopefully will help anyone else who runs across this issue and wasn't helped by the previous suggestions (which are all pretty good ones, I might add).
The first time this happened, it was simply because my hard drive was full. I know, it sound so silly, but I went through several re-installations before I realized that the drive on which I stored my photos had filled to the brim (less than 1 MB remaining), and as soon as I cleared up space, the "change modules" error went away.
That's BAD ERROR TRAPPING by Adobe. I'm sorry, but if the root cause is that the hard drive is full, that's what the error should report. FYI, Lightroom 1.0 did report that my hard drive was full, so something that changed in 1.1 or 1.2 caused that (helpful) error to be replaced by the dreaded "change modules" error.
Okay, so the second time I received this error, I definitely had 75 gigs free on my drive. I created a new administrator user, logged in through that account, installed the program, and voila, it did work. However, I was not in the mood to migrate all of my software and settings between accounts to fix this problem.
I followed all of the advice given here. I went through several re-installs. Each time I purged every important Adobe-related file. Nothing worked. The one thing I never touched was my Pictures\Lightroom folder. Because that contains my precious data!
Apparently that's one of the big keys to this problem. I simply renamed that folder to Lightroom.old, allowed the fresh install of Lightroom to create a new default database and then I immediately swapped them back and opened the old catalog. It works now.
This error is definitely something Adobe can remedy. You shouldn't have to move your catalog folder, open the program, restore the catalog folder, and finally re-open your old catalog, not to mention the numerous re-installations of the software and restoration of our preferences that we've all had to endure.
I truly hope that version 1.3 will do away with the "change modules" error forever because I find Lightroom to be more or less indispensable in every other way.

I Nearly bought from Amazon too but I found a thread from Adobe stating that the only recognized outlet for lightoom is themselves and other outlets serial numbers will not be guaranteed.
THat at was sufficient for me to buy direct from Adobe, hope you get it sorted.

  • An error occurred when attempting to change modules. Lightroom 5.2 on Mac

Lightroom 5.2 on a Mac....keeps saying 'An error occurred when attempting to change modules.

I FIGURED OUT HOW TO FIX THIS PROBLEM!
i\IIf you get the error message, “An error occurred when attempting to change modules” open up a brand new user account on your computer, name it something (Do not use Guest). Lightroom will be installed on both users, however everyone wants it to work on their main account, here is how you do it.
Click on the go menu at the top of the desktop in the new user profile and hold down option or the alt key. A tab will pop up that reads library. Click on it. A finder will appear, look for application support and click on it. Next, click adobe folder in Application Support and scroll down to Lightroom  Copy this folder and paste it into the main user. HOW TO DO THIS? First copy the entire folder and then click computer in the go menu, Macintosh HD and then Users. Find your primary user account. In this case it would NOT be the one that looks like the house because you are on your alternative account! Nevertheless, find your main user account, click it and paste Lightroom folder into it. Doesn’t matter where you paste it, just know where it is.
NOW, log out of the alternative account and log into your primary user account and find the copied lightroom folder. Do the same thing mentioned above, Go menu, Computer, Macintosh HD, Users, but this time click the house tab. Find where you pasted the folder and paste it back in application support in the library via go menu. It will ask you to replace it. Hit yes. If it does not allow you to. Click get info on application support tab and make sure everyone is on read and write. Once pasted and replaced start up Lightroom.
IF NOTHING HAS WORKED FOR YOU DO THIS METHOD, IT WORKS!!

  • Another "An error occurred when attempting to change modules" error

    Hello all:
After using Adobe Photoshop Lightroom on Mac OSX trouble free for the past 6 months, I opened up Lightroom today and received the following error: "An error occurred when attempting to change modules." I had not made any changes in between when it worked normally and when the error started to occur. I beleive the last thing I did before this error occurred was to go into the Print Module.
Other information--I keep all my RAW .NEF files on an external Firewire (800) 750 GB drive. This is on Mac OS X 10.5 running Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 1.3 and also with 1.4.1. I'm running an iMac 20" with dual-core 2.2 Ghz Intel processors and 4 GB of RAM. I have around 25k images total.
When I noticed this problem, I was on Lightroom 1.3. I immediately upgraded to 1.4.1, which did not solve the problem. I have also tried many suggestions in the forums including uninstalling the application and removing the .plist file.
I thought I had come up with a solution by creating a new catalog, then importing the former into it. While this seems to work immediately after the import process, as soon as I close it, the problem manifests itself again.
More details that may or (likely) may not help:
    - Going to the Develop and Print Modules gives me no problems. However, when I click on Library, Slideshow, or Web, I see the error.
    - I upgraded my Mac to the latest patch level after observing this error to no avail.
So it looks like my choices are to create a new file and reimport every single time, or lose all of the work I've done for the past 6 months on thousands of images.
Can anyone please help???? I promise to post the solution when we fix this darn thing so others may benefit. I'd be happy to run through any troubleshooting that y'all would suggest outside of switching to a Canon.
    Thanks!!!!
    Matt

I'd first check for the existence of a file ending in .lock, which should be present when LR is in use, but if it exists when LR is quit, it can cause problems, and should be deleted.
    Please post back your results.

  • An error occurred when attempting to change modules Lightroom 5 CC

I've seen other users pose this question but haven't seen any solutions that work for me.  I get the error: "An error occurred when attempting to change modules" when I open up Lightroom 5 on one user, but on another user it opens up fine.  I've tried moving and trashing preferences, uninstalling and reinstalling the program.  It's the same whether I open an existing catalog or try to open Lightroom while creating a new project.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  This occured after updating to Mavericks on a 2011 iMac.  All other Creative Cloud apps seem to have installed just fine.

    Hi 99jon,
Many thanks for that. Had been going through this list yesterday and now again today:
Ref  Solution 1: Lightroom is at its latest update
Ref  Solution 2: It's interesting how I cannot find the Preferences file anywhere on my mac. (new mac pro, OS 10/9.2) . . .
Ref  Solution 3: Lightroom doesn't allow me to do anything after the error message appears
Ref  Solution 4: don't have any Nik Software plug-ins
Ref  Solution 5: checked permissions and changed all to "Read & Write" - makes no difference
Ref  Solution 6: I don't have a different user account on my mac.
Not sure what else to do.

For such a big company .. there isn't any chat option to get to someone to talk to  !!!

Just because you are the only user on the computer doesn't mean you are the administrator.
Also, the fact that you are being asked to re-enter your serial number each time you start means that it is not being remembered because something is either preventing it from being written to you disk or (less likely) something is erasing it. This does suggest that you lack certain permissions to make changes to your computer. Not only to save your serial number, but to have access to the Lightroom files needed to change modules (they are just plug-ins within Lightroom).
Try creating a new user account and run Lightroom from there (making sure that it is part of the Administrator group).
To get to chat support, you have to choose the options:

    Hi ecl44,
This might be due to incorrect preferences / permissions issue on the Mac.

Lightroom trial doesn't show complete menu selections or import button.  Also get error message on launch:  An error occurred when attempting to change modules.  I am unable to find/see the following file to try renaming the SLCache and SLStore files:  System Library/Application Support/Adobe.  Any ideas?  I only have 16 days left on the trial and have been unable to get it to work on my Macbook Pro.  This is all I am seeing after Lightroom opens.  Thanks!

Thanks to both of you for attempting to help.  I finally figured out what was wrong . . . it was a Permissions problem.  Very frustrating, but after scouring the troubleshooting tips I finally found the one that solved my problem.  I had to add a User and give it Read/Write privileges to Lightroom.  The file I had to add the User to was Hidden on my Mac, so that added an even bigger challenge to the mystery.  Only a few days left on my trial version!  I hope I have time to try it out!

  • LR5 "An error occurred when attempting to change modules"

I've recently purchased a new Mac Pro and am re-installing all my software. I installed Lightroom 5, but every time I open it, I get the error: "An error occurred when attempting to change modules". I am unable to create a new catalog or do ANYTHING inside of LR5. I've also tried every option of: http://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom/kb/error-changing-modules-lightroom.html. Any ideas or can anyone help PLEASE? Thanks.

    Try the options here: http://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom/kb/error-changing-modules-lightroom.html
You can also d'load the Lr5.3 version as a trial from here: https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/tdrc/index.cfm?product=photoshop_lightroom&loc=en_gb
and install that over your Lr5.0 install.

  • Lightroom: "An error occurred when attempting to change modules."

I'm a first time Lightroom(via the Cloud) user (used Capture One before this) and just downloaded it today. The first thing I saw was this error message
"An error occurred when attempting to change modules."
I've updated it to 4.3 and I've tried all the other recommendations I found here:
    http://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom/kb/error-changing-modules-lightroom.html
I don't know what Nik products are but I don't believe I have any.
    I'm on a Mac running 10.6.8
Removed this preference file I found here:
    http://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom/kb/preference-file-locations-lightroom-4.html
So frustrating! Please, can anyone help me???

I can only quote from the webpage that you already visited RE: Permission.
You need to have full permission for reading and writing for the folders and drives that Lr is using - particularly the folder that contains the catalog (i.e. the database Lr is working with).
If you have full permission try re-installing Lr. Un-install it via your OS. And re-install it.
Also, occasionally downloaded programs can become damaged during download - for instance when the download has been interrupted.
Before you re-install, I'd recommend that you download Lr again and use this second download for re-installation.
From the webpage (particularly read the part about Macs):
Solution 5: Set correct permissions on Lightroom folder inside Application Support
The Lightroom folder inside Application Support could have the wrong permissions preventing Lightroom from writing to it which can cause this error.
Navigate to the following folder: /Users/[user name]/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Lightroom
Highlight the Lightroom folder and chose File > Get Information
Under Sharing & Permission, verify that your have Read & Write Privileges. If not, click the padlock icon at the lower right, enter your password when prompted, then click the Read only entry and select Read & Write.
Important: (Mac OS) Apple made the user library folder hidden by default with the release of Mac OS X 10.7. If you need access to files in the hidden library folder to perform Adobe-related troubleshooting, see How to access hidden user library files.
Solution 6: Try a different user account.
Copy the Lightroom folder into a new user account or other existing account on your computer. Then, restart Lightroom. The Lightroom folder is in the following locations:
    Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\[user name]\Application Data\Adobe\
    Windows 7, Vista: [user name]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\
    Mac OS: [user name]/Library/Application Support/Adobe/
Important: (Mac OS) Apple made the user library folder hidden by default with the release of Mac OS X 10.7. If you need access to files in the hidden library folder to perform Adobe-related troubleshooting, see How to access hidden user library files.
