Error opening Address Book
When trying to open Address Book I get this message: "You cannot use this version of the application Addressbook with this version of Mac OS X". Only thing is, the address book CAME with this Leopard version, didn't it? I've been using Entourage mainly so I'm sure it's been a while since using Address book, but now that Entourage has crashed (so sad as you cannot get a new version!!!) I wanted to go back to Addressbook, but find I cannot access it. Are there any Addressbook updates I can get? Which package does Addressbook come with these days? It's neither in iLife or iWork, both of which I've updated.
Any help would be valued!
- Pingen
Address Book is part of the Operating System, not iLife, as you suspected. What version of Address Book do you have installed? Have you recently ran Software Update to see if there’s a newer version? I have version 4.1 on Leopard 10.5.8.
Perhaps there’s a problem with Disk Permissions. You could run Disk Utility to check your permissions. To Repair your permissions you may need to run that function a few times. I think on Leopard you have to repair permissions after booting from the Install disks but you can try it first from your internal drive and see if it will run without rebooting.

Error Opening Address Book, iChat, iCal and Big Bang Board Games
Hello,
I mistakenly trashed the applications list. In order to restore the applications list, I pulled the list out of trash to the desktop and then back to the sidebar. At this point, the applications were not available to the other users of the computer. I then copied the list to the universal applications folder. Now, all but the Address Book, iCal, iChat and Big Bang Board Games work. These applications close "unexpectedly" when I try and open them. The following is the header of the report for the Address Book:
Date/Time: 2007-07-06 10:46:34.136 -0400
OS Version: 10.4.10 (Build 8R2232)
Report Version: 4
Command: Address Book
Path: /Applications/Address Book.app/Contents/MacOS/Address Book
Parent: WindowServer [61]
Version: 4.0.5 (487)
Build Version: 12
Project Name: AddressBook
Source Version: 4870000
PID: 272
Thread: 0
Exception: EXCBADACCESS (0x0001)
Codes: KERNPROTECTIONFAILURE (0x0002) at 0x00000004
I am hoping to get an answer as to how to rectify this situation. If it is not already obvious, I am new to Macs.
Mike DHello Mike:
Welcome to Apple discussions (from where you were on the dark side):
Try a couple of things.
Run repair disk from your software install DVD (until it reports no errors).
If that does not work, I would opt for an archive and install:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120
A&I installs a pristine version of OS X (which would have to be updated, of course) while preserving your files, programs, and settings.

Palm Desktop software - Fails to open with msg "Error: Failed to open Address Book database"
In July 2009 I dropped my trusty Visor on a tile floor and it stopped working. So, in the meantime I have been using only the Palm Desktop software.
Just yesterday, when I attempted to launch the Palm Desktop software, it failed with the message “Error: Failed to open Address Book database”. I think this error was caused by a very ungraceful shut-down of my Win XP system yesterday.
I really do need to use the Palm Desktop software for my address list, calendar, and memo. The problem is that the error with the Address Book database seems to be preventing the Palm Desktop software from initializing.
I am using Palm Desktop 4.0.1 on Windows XP SP3. I do NOT have an export file of the Palm address book or other databases. However, I do have five levels of backup history on my external Maxgor backup drive.
Specifically, on my current c drive I have files in the directory:
C:\Program Files\Handspring\WR\address
address.bak 5/16/2009 (from last sync before I broke Visor)
address.dat 5/24/2011
Personal.ABA 11/6/2008
Unfiled.ABA 3/28/2008
On my most recent backup of my system, there are the following files:
address.bak 5/16/2009 (from last sync before I broke Visor)
address.dat 5/12/2011
Personal.ABA 11/6/2008
Unfiled.ABA 3/28/2008
I have not listed the four older backup versions.
I haven’t tried any corrective measures yet (I don’t want to make matters worse) and am hoping that someone can guide me along the right path.
Is it possible for me to just rename the “current” address.dat file to something like address.SAV and then copy the Address.dat file file with date of 5/12/2011 into the current directory. Will the software then just use the older version of the data, or must I do something else.
I am grateful for any assistance. Thank you very much.

Post relates to: Visor DeluxeThanks for the speedy response. However, I read the article for which you provided the link, and I hve also read many other articles that I found via search, but I don't think these will help me. All of these articles seem to assume that (1) you have a handheld to which you can sync and thereby rebuild the database on the PC, or (2) you have a backup that you created via the Palm Desktop export function. Unfortunately, I have neither and so I don't think any of these solutions will work for me.
I did read with great interest an article that stated that recent versions of Palm Desktop have a built-in function that will repair a corrupted Datebook database. Will this also fix a corrupted Address Book database which is my problem?
So, I downloaded and attempted to install the latest version of Palm Desktop. I was careful to read the instructions that stated NOT to uninstall my current version of Palm Desktop, but to just install the latest version on top of my current Palm Desktop. However, when I attempted to do the installation, the installer software said it could not install on top of my current software and that I should first uninstall my current software.
I have some questions now:
(1) If I uninstall my current version of Palm Desktop, will this destroy my Address Book, Datebook, and Memo databases ( I don't care about the ToDo database)? If so, what can I do to preserve those databases?
(2) Is there really a function built in the recent versions of Palm Desktop that will fix a corrupted database? Is this an "automatic" function that will detect and fix a broken database or is this something I will have to invoke?
Thanks for your help.

Message Edited by lisbellaw on 06-26-2008 06:42 AMHi, and welcome to the Palm Community Forums.
This question comes up relatively frequently (using the Search function brings up many, many hits, such as this one which has a link to the Palm Knowledgebase article which should resolve the problem). It is typically the result of a damaged or corrupted record.
Good luck, let us know if it helps.

Post relates to: Palm VxI've seen a lot of people post a message that's basically like the problem I'm having. I'm sending this to everyone who had the same general type of question in hopes that my fix might cure your problem also.
My Palm Desktop (4.1.4) would open correctly the first time after installing, but after doing a hotsync it would crash every other time it was opened (using a Tungsten E). I'm running Windows XP Professional, and it would give an error saying "Windows XP has encountered an error and needs to close", or something like that.
I did the usual. Removed the program and reinstalled, which didn't work. I also went through the tedious process of uninstalling the software, then removing every registry entry by hand that referenced the Palm or Pocketmirror, which also didn't work.
I searched through the support files on palmone.com and found something that gave me an idea. It talked about removing a corrupted file to fix problems with the datebook. I hadn't been getting any errors pointing to a specific problem, but on a hunch I deleted the entire address folder out of the Palm directory. That did the trick!
A corrupted address book in the Palm Desktop software was keeping it from running. The problem was how to fix the corruption, which I eventually found on a menu option in the Palm Desktop software.
Below is the fix that worked for me. Caution! Only do this if you have all of the current info in your Palm, because it will erase what's on your Palm Desktop.
1. Go to your Palm folder on your pc (default install location is c:\palm) and open the folder for your user.
2. Delete the address, datebook, expense, memopad, note pad and todo folders.
3. Open the Palm Desktop program.
4. Do a hotsync.
5. Important! Don't click on anything else in the Palm Desktop after doing the hotsync. If you change to one of the areas that has corrupted data, it will immediately crash.
6. Right after doing the hotsync, click Tools on the top menu in the Palm Desktop, then Options. Click on the Tools tab and then click Check Now to fix the corrupted data.
7. Click OK.
That should hopefully get you running again. Let me know if that worked for you. -
Error to open address book database
Hi. I've been using the Palm Pilot i705 without the email feature for several years and on a succession of computers. Never had a problem. Today I can't access it on my pc. I get "error to open address book database."
Is the fix to reinstall the software from the cd? If so how do I save my existing databases or would the subsequent hot sync after reinstall pull in the database? My last hot sync was successful and is my most current.
Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks. Pat.cmoulin,
Ok, No problem.
Glad to hear you recovered your data.
FYI,
The best way to preserve your data is to export the data in each category in Palm Desktop to a seperate folder on your PC.
Create a new folder on your PC somewhere that is convenient. Name it something like Palm Desktop Data. Click on the link below and follow the instructions on that page for the export procedure.
http://www.palm.com/cgi-bin/cso_kbURL.cgi?ID=28734
Make sure you select all for the range in the export window.
With the data saved in the folder you created, make a copy of that folder and save to a flash drive, cd-rw or external hard drive.
Anytime you make a change in Palm Desktop, export the data that was changed to that folder and save again to the external media.
With this process you can always import the data back into Palm Desktop anytime you have a problem with the data in Palm Desktop or if your computer/hard drive/device crashes. -
PAB_CMD_GET_PABS:Unable to open address book
Hi, i have running iMS 5.2 with more than 40000 users. I have the next problem with one of our users when he wants to make a new message: a window error appears with the next message: "PAB_CMD_GET_PABS:Unable to open address book"
Anyone knows why?
Thanks a lot.
HugoAs far as I know there are three things that can lead to this error message
<ul><li>The ldap-server in the paburi and the ldap-server configured in the mail-server differ
<li>The paburi does not contain the RDN of the user as it's last ou component<br>That is: If for example your user has the following RDN: uid=the_user.<br>Then the RDN of the paburi <b>must</b> be ou=uid=the_user.
<li>The path to the paburi doesn't exist in the ldap.<br>That is: If your paburi ends in the following dn: ou=uid=the_user, ou=domain, o=pab<br> then the nodes o=pab and ou=domain, o=pab <b>must</b> exist. The Webmail application will create the node ou=uid=the_user, ou=domain, o=pab, but <i>not</i> its parents.
</ul>
I hope this helps.
yours,

AB_CMD_GET_PABS:Unable to open address book
My iMS 5.2 is configured with iDS 5.1.
Error : "AB_CMD_GET_PABS:Unable to open address book"
I had gone thru all the replies in this regard.
Even the pab attribute value is correct w.r.t the user's DN.
My application creates a new user with mail options enabled. The objectclass attribute values that are assigned to the new user are inetUser,ipUser,
inetmailuser.
I am able to access the webmail of a user created using the iDS console.
But this error comes while accessing the webmail of the user created by my appln.
Suggest me what all attributes are required to solve my problem ?and why icons of the users created by my application are round in shape instead of the default ones.
Thnxx.I had solved the icon problem.
But this error comes while accessing the webmail of the user created by my appln.
Can anyone suggest me to solve error ?

I have a Mac Pro using OSX 10.7.4. When using apple mail I click on the address icon to obtain email address and nothing happens. I've restarted both the application and the Mac but still won't open address book. Any ideas please.
Assuming you have these accounts set up in Mail, open preferences and under Accounts tab, edit the SMTP outgoing server list. Do you have a .mac address in the list? If so, delete it.
Are you using iCloud?
For the troubled account, select the correct SMTP server for that account in the box and check the box to use only that server with that account. -
using version 4.0 I was able to just a few days ago set an alarm in Ical using my email address, but now i can not. I open alarm and click on email and it tells me to open address book and select my card and email. I can open the address book and find my card and email but i don't know where to go from here.. not sure what has happened over the last couple of days for it not to work. any idea's how to get this working again.
Ron,
Open Address Book, find your card and make sure that you choose Card>Make This My Card.
If that is unsuccessful, delete and recreate your card, making sure to once again choose "Make This My Card." -
HT2486 How can I change the first contact that appears when I open address book?
Every time I open Address book, it opens on the same person. Someone I don't really want as the first contact I see every day!...
Is there a setting to change this? or a way to set a "Key Contact"?
ThanksUse the Settings app
Settings > iTunes and App Store > tap on the incorrect Apple ID that appears > Sign Out > then sign in with your correct Apple ID.
Keep in mind that all apps downloaded or purchased are always associated with the Apple ID used to purchase or download them. As those apps have updates you will need to enter the Apple ID and password that was used for them. If you want to avoid this delete all of the apps purchased or downloaded with a previous Apple ID and download them again with the current Apple ID. You will have purchase any apps that are not free. -

Very slow opening Address Book and Mail
Opening Address Book takes about 45 seconds to see the contacts. The application window appears but it's empty for 45 seconds. Just done the 10.6 upgrade and restarted several times but it's no faster. I have 443 records.
Has anyone else had this problem. Any suggestions to fix?
Thanks
Message was edited by: alastairmI actually figured out how to do that but it didn't fix the issue. I deleted all the addresses and told it to re-merge the information. The only issue I ran into was it wanted to delete it off my other computer as well which is still on 10.5.8. I'm not going to update it till I get this issue fixed probably. When it popped up on my Mac Pro to delete all my contacts I said no and told it to replace the files back on MobileMe and when it re synced with my MacBookPro it still had the same issue. I even re-installed the address book.

Cannot open address book...
something has happen to my address book. every time I try to open, I get a dialogue box "cannot open address book because it is not supported on this architecture.' please help.
One thing at a time.
A media file in an email. What type of a file? Was the email from a trusted source?
Unfortunately WMA and WMV files CAN carry malicious code in them (viruses-like). They SHOULD NOT affect the OS X, but the world is spinning fast...
The app icon - I meant go to the Applications folder, find the Address Book application and click on it one to select it.
COMMAND + i - Command is the key next to the space bar (the one with a "clover" type of a symbol and command written at the bottom). Hold the Command key and tap "i" - this shows the Info box, and General is at the very top.
Keep us posted please.
