Error opening Mac CS AI file on PC

Would appreciate any help with following issue.
Have a couple Macs (OS 10.5 10.4) with Illustrator CS which have created thousand of AI files over the last few yesrs. Thes file were copied to a Windows 2003 server and shared with some PCs that run Windows XP Pro and Illustrator 10.
The problem is when the PCs open the files they get a warning about being created in a newer version and instructs to import, we then get the following error when we try to import "Acrobat PDF File Format is having difficulties (NESS)" and does not import anything.
This does not happen with all files maybe about 25% of them. They can still be opened by the Macs. There seems to be no pattern to why some open and others dont (that I can see). I have noticed that on some of the orginals, if we copy the contents to another file, piece at a time it can be opened on the pc but we select all and copy it may not open. Having to recreate all the "damaged" files would take a lot time and effort.
I was wondering what the "(NESS)" means in the error and if it might offer a hint as to why the do not open.

No idea what NESS might refer to, but apaprently it's a specific chunk in teh file. do the files in question use linked images by any chance? If so, there may be an issue with network path resolution as obviously those might differ between Mac and PC. How do you connect to the server from teh Macs? via Windows SMB or Apple AFP, i.e. do you have a virtual mac share on teh server or just Windows shares?

Hello people, as the title suggests, i have another question regarding the "there was an error opening this document. this file cannot be found" error. I have searched on Google and on these forums but i havent found an answer to my particular case (sorry if i overlooked it).
I work at a supportdesk for a company that uses Windows XP with Adobe Reader version 8.1.3.
Users are getting this error when they access a PDF file placed on a (mapped) networkdrive. Contrary to some other cases i have found on this forum, spaces are handled without a problem. But a comma in the name of one of the folders that contain the PDF file are what causes this error.
i.e.:
Opening the following path results in the error:
L:\X, Y & Z\adobe.pdf
Removing the comma so the path becomes:
L:\X Y & Z\adobe.pdf
works just fine.
So far our workaround has always been to simply remove the comma and move on, but I've been wondering why this comma is such a problem for Adobe Reader. As far as i know Adobe Reader is the only program we use that has this issue, M$ Word works just fine with it to name an example.
To sum my questions up:
- Why is comma (,) a problem for Adobe Reader?
- Have i missed any patches/new versions where this issue has been addressed?
- What is Adobe's stance on this, and are there any plans to "fix" this?

Ok, nevermind, we just found the problem
It's not Adobe Reader that is causing this, but another program the company uses to manage/distribute/authorise programs that users are allowed to access (Scense). I had never even considered another problem could have caused this for Reader.

Message'there was an error opening this document.The file cannot be found'

Using xp home and when I click to download the pdf file, it will give 3 options been 'open'/'save'/?. When I choose the 'open' option, it will give me the above message "there was an error opening this document.The file cannot be found"
owever if I choose to "save" and I will be able to open the file and read it. In this pc its using Adobe Reader 8.1.2 with a patch. It was working fine prior to this sudden occurance of the error.
Strangely I have another pc with the same specification, I was able to choose "open" and be able to read the file. Can anyone help to resolve the issue by using the "open' option instead of "save, then open". Greateful for your prompt response.

Fyi, in addition to my earlier post, the other pc is using Adobe 8.1.1 and no other patch. I was trying to find 8.1.1 version but could not find a trust worthy site to load from. Do you think the error caused by using the 8.1.2 version? Thanks

Windows XP Professional sp2 machine
512 memory
ie sp2
when opening two pdfs from a website links receive the error, "there was an error opening this document. this file cannot be found"
If you save the file to the pc, then open the .pdf it opens ok
other pdfs open ok from browser from same website and different websites
had customer try on another's machine; the two pdfs opened ok
tried Adobe Reader 8.1, 9.0, and Adobe Professional 8.0
uninstalled reader and professional; deleted directories; reinstalled reader and professional(placed into a separate directory); same error
On the machine tried admin accounts, under customer's profile made admin account, renamed the customer's account so that another account was freshly generated, all generated the same error.
Ran ccleaner to clean up files in the registry and temporary internet files, then repaired adobe - same error
repaired internet explorer - same error
scoured web for same error but most were applications trying to open the pdfs, a few errors were for programming php, a lot of questions but few answers in context of current issue. the ccleaner and repairing ie were resolutions i found on the web.
nothing was listed in msoft's ie knowledgebased searched.
any help would be appreciated.

I get the same message when I try to open a pdf attachment in my free AOL e-mail account. This problem just started today for some unknown reason. I have Adobe Reader 9 and never had a problem before. If I forward e-mails with a pdf attachment to my Road Runner account, I can open it with no problem. I can't seem to find any answers to this problem. Frustrating! HELP!!!

This error message occasionally occurs with Acrobat 5 on XP 2. However the same files can be opened with Acrobat 6.0.4 on Win98(se2).

I'd like ot upgrade 5 on my XP system, but have read many posts complaining about the same error with newer versions.
Is there a version that never produces this error on files that aren't actually damaged? And has anyone figured out what produces this error? (The posts I've seen suggest solutions that don't seem to work.)

I've read posts about this problem happening on all versions, and wanted to see if it was least likely to happen in one version.
I just need the basic function - the ability to read a pdf file.
Of course, it seems to be a problem only for some, and there's no way of knowing the extent, so I will try an upgrade or two.

How to deal with "There was an error opening this document, the file is damaged and could not be"

Hello, everyone:
I open one pdf document with Adobe Reader 9.3, but it appeared that "There was an error opening this document, the file is damaged and could not be repaired".. and I found that another several pdf document in the same folder that I have not opened for a long time is also "damaged and could not be repaired".
But in the same folder, other documents of different types are ok, does that mean there is something wrong with my hard drive?
Has anyone else run into this issue or have any suggestions?

It could be that the directory is damaged. It could be that at one time you had a virus that did damage, it is hard to say. Do you have a good backup?

Acrobat 11 there was an error opening this document. the file is damaged and could not be repaired

we are receiving an error when opening certain pdfs saying "there was an error opening this document. the file is damaged and could not be repaired"
i've tried a few things to fix this issue with no luck
tried on a brand new windows 7 install without any added software like anti-virus software, etc
tried on my home pc (I forwarded the document from my work pc to my home pc and still receiving the same error)
don't think it's anything related to the computers, thinking it's more an issue with the pdf. i've tried the basics like deleting temp files from IE, going to %temp% and deleting that out, doing an acrobat repair, trying in reader instead of acrobat, updating users from acrobat 10 to 11, and still receiving the same issue. the odd thing is, some people can open this document and some receive the error. the other thing is i've tried alternative pdf programs with no avail, same errors from those as well
i work on the helpdesk with one other person for the company and not sure what else we can try
don't think this is a pc issue - tried on pcs in the company, home pcs, personal pcs and all get this error
got to be an issue with either the pdf, or the way its being sent
i did reach out to OUR e-mail team here (lotus notes admin) and they've ruled out anything as far as an encryption causing the conflict may go, so notes isn't the issue either
would it be possible it's on the persons end that's sending the file?

Unfortunately, CR 10.5 is not supported on WIN 2012 Server. See this wiki for more details. In order to work in a supported environment you will have to upgrade to CR 2008 Service pack 7, or SAP Crystal Reports, developer version for Microsoft Visual Studio (2010 / 2012 / 2013).

Probably because you aren't writing the last byte read every time through the while loop.

If I get Pages for my iPhone, will it open Mac Pages '06 files?

I have an iPhone 4. No cell service. I have been experimenting with LogMeIn and Cubby on my iPhone and 2 old (2006) laptops. One is a MB and one a MBP. I have Pages '06 on my laptops, and OSX 10.6.8. I can use LogMeIn and a WIFI connection to view old Pages documents on the iPhone, but I want to use Cubby directly if possible. When I try to open a Pages document, it lets me know it can not. So I thought perhaps I would get Pages for the iPhone. But if it won't open Mac Pages '06 files, there is no point.
I suppose I could print each of my Pages documents on my Mac to pdf. Then I could view them in Cubby. And instead of $10 for a version of Pages for my iPhone that may not open the old stuff anyway, I would just have to spend a lot of time printing all the files I want.
What do you think?

Check the last two bullets here. This comes from the Pages app description in the iTunes Store:
Based on this, I believe Pages '06 is not directly supported, but you could use some intermediate representation (e.g., PDF) to import your work.

I am creating an Adobe PDF file using Save As in FrameMaker 7.0. (I have Acrobat Standard 8). The PDF creates fine, but I used to get the pdf to immediately/automatically open. Now I get the message "There was an error opening the pdf..."
I did select the option to automatically open the pdf in File > Preferences but it doesnt do it, Any suggestions?

Do you get any error code associated with this error message.
Does this happen with other pdf files too or with that specific pdf?
In case it happens with that specific pdf, please get another copy of that pdf because the current copy might have got corrupted.

I recently purchased a brand new Dell Laptop Inspiron 5521 Windows 7 Home Premium with purchase of Microsoft Office 2013 and already preinstalled Adobe Reader X. When trying to insert object being a saved pdf documentinto Word Doc., I keep receiving the following message: [There was an error opening this document. This file cannot be found.] Why?

I don't know but I wouldn't expect it to work anyway. What do you expect to happen?

I have been getting this error message when I try to open a .pdf that was created in Word. I have searched for this error code and nothing comes up.
The file was created from a Word newsletter template. I had no problem opening this in PS before I updated my Adobe Acrobat Pro. The file CAN be opened in Acrobat however.
Any advice as to what this code means and why I can't opne the file anymore?

Thanks for the reply, Chris. In this case I can switch the project over to InDesign, but writing out a Word file to PDF is a pretty common thing to do, so I hope they eventually have time to fix it for those of us having the problem.
I understand updating for the upgrade, but not everyone can afford to upgrade to a new set of CS software every time a new version is released. At work is one thing, but I can't justify it for my personal copy. And I know you didn't mean it that way, but I hope that Adobe doesn't forget about its CS3 users just because CS4 is the latest version. The Creative Suite is a pretty expensive piece of software to buy to quickly become old and not worthy of bug fixes.

Dataset error on MAC for linked file

Hello all,
I am trying to make use of Variables panel in Illustrator CS6 Mac version. I added a Path variable. Then placed an image in the document and added a variable for the link file. Created two datasets with default names. Then when I try to switch between two datasets it gives me error "The filter cannot complete because of an unknown error".
On PC it works fine on Mac why the Variable palette is not working. Am I missing anything here. If I just have Path or Text Variables it works fine.

If you are using SBO 2004 you should not be using this method of loading the srf form (Loadbatch actions is for SBO 6.5). Here is code in VB .Net the load it - you can convert it (I don't have it in c#).

There was an error opening the document. File can't be found?

I seem to get this error when opening PDF files from the internet with Acrobat Reader 8 but when I have the full version of Adobe Acrobat installed I can open them fine. Can anyone explain why or how this happens? Not everyone has the full version, does anyone have any suggestions about how to fix this so they can open in the reader. I have checked the preferences and open PDF file is checked as well.

You may have to download the attachment to your local system and then open the file. Not all email clients can transfer the temporary file and properly pass the information to Reader or Acrobat. This is a little inconvenient but it is reliable.

Error opening an uploaded Winzip file

Hi
I have uploaded a zipped file into the portal, but when I click on it, it gives me an error that the file is corrupt. I checked the file, and locally on my harddrive, it opens up perfectly.
I tested it with a couple of files.. and the only ones that opens is zipped text documents.
Anyone have encountered the same problem and maybe know how to resolve it.
