It all has to do with the format of the file you are exporting (I assume you are exporting and not just rendering a sequence). If you are exporting from FCP, "Item settings" will create a new file with the same settings as your sequence or clip. If you are creating the file from another program such as after effects, any available formats there should be supported by QuickTime, but you might possible need to enable an additional codec for QT.
Otherwise, if the redering process is preventing your project file from reopening, I would manually throw away the render files and trash your prefs.

  • Cannot Open .MOV Quicktime Files From Drive

    Greetings All!
Can anyone tell me why I cannot open files from my secondary hard drive?

I've had a problem in the past with opening .mov files from a second hard drive which was caused by the drive being named in a way QT could not recognize it. The drive was named (F:\F:\) when changing the drive letter to a single(F:\). QT was then able to recognize and play. But that was generating a, error 43 file could not be found. So you might still want to check how the drives are named.
I read that error 8971 can be a need to update QT,but don't know how accurate the info is. If you do update from QT6 to QT7 and are using QT Pro you'll have to purchase a new key

  • Garageband export to quicktime gives "error opening movie"

    hi
i've tried to export a movie without success. i imported video from imovie and added 3 audio tracks from itunes. i exported at full resolution several times to quicktime, but each time gives "error opening movie" could not open movie dialogue box. i exported it to idvd and succeeded. but i need quicktime. any help?
    thanks
    bill

I have tried trashing the plist file. The files look fine through the media manager when copied to the other profile. They look like they are suppose to. The small videos also look fine when played on that computer. Unfortunately our other mac pro computer doesn't have final cut so i can't open and play proress files and my laptop, due to the extreme resolution can't be played on my laptop with final cut studio installed. Tomorrow i'm going to install the proress decoder on the one mac pro to check the files and make sure the self contained is checked but i'm almost positive on that. Other than nuking the profile i don't know what else to do. This is really weird.

  • Error Opening Movie - The Movie Could Not Be Opened

Quicktime is giving me trouble and it's not giving me a reason why. It doesn't want to play movies dl'd from the internet. It tells me 'Error opening movie... The movie could not be opened.' The clip in question is a wmv. I tried opening the file in DIVx and iTunes but no dice; they didn't even recognize that I was trying to open a movie. I got the same problem with some films transferred from my old PC via a flash drive (not all, but some).
I am on a MacBook Pro that I just got this week; my first Mac. I am running OSX Tiger 10.4.8. 2.33 Ghz proc.
Please be gentle with the explanations; I know very little about computers.
Oh, also, in the DL'd files menu - you know, the one that pops up when you DL something - the file DLs with the icon looking like a blank piece of paper. Probably not important, but it sure doesn't look like something playable or executable.

"the file DLs with the icon looking like a blank piece of paper."
When the download window pops up type .wmv in the window before you click the download button or OK button.
If the above does not work then download the following FREE player:
    Flip4Mac
If the above player does not play the .wmv file then please post the URL and/or link of this file for us to test it out for you.

  • "Error opening movie" with QT 7 Pro

I've followed the sets in how to play a DVD, but I get the following error "Error opening movie, The movie could not be opened." Does QT7P not play DVDs? Please help.

QuickTime Player doesn't (without third party software) play the contents found on DVD's.

  • After Effects error: opening movie - you do not have permission to open this file (-54)

    Hi all,
I'm new to after effects. I have just started receiving the following error every time I try to render my movie:
"After Effects error: opening movie - you do not have permission to open this file (-54)".
Yesterday morning, I was able to render movies, however, after I did Apple's latest update I've started receiving the following error. What is happening is that I'm trying to render a movie. It gets to a certain point in the movie (about 0;00;16;09) and then this error pops up. This morning I've tried to repair the permissions with disk utility, but that doesn't seem to have helped.
I've searched Google and the Adobe support forums with no luck. Please help.
Thanks in advance for you help,
    William

Have been able to downgrade to QT 7.3 using Pacifist. Did NOT require re-install of OS.
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread...347251&tstart=0
    Download the right version here:
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/
    Panther: http://www.apple.com/support/downlo...forpanther.html
    Tiger: http://www.apple.com/support/downlo...31fortiger.html
    Leopard: http://www.apple.com/support/downlo...forleopard.html
    Install with Pacifist
    http://www.charlessoft.com/
Now that I am back to QT7.3, iTunes7.6 is now asking me to update QT to 7.4 in order to be able to view the new movie rental feature of the iTunes store... which sorta sheds some light on the no permission error. Now that iTunes is renting, not just selling, movies, QT is now all fussy about ownership and permissions. Just a guess.

  • Error opening movie

i am trying to open a video file that i downloaded. the file is in MPEG Movie format but everytime i try to open it, the messege error opening movie. the movie could not be opened comes up. How do i this file to play ing QT

Usually, stuff opens on my husbands computer that doesn't on mine (non-mac -- ouch)That could be a problem. Normally I might recommend trying to open the file in an altenate media player and checking its own "get info" window it the clip loads. But it looks like this may be an option here. If all applications refuse to open the file, my next guess would be that you may simply have a corrupted file. You can, of course, simply try to download the file again and see if it works the second time. Or you could post the URL for the file and see if anyong else can access it.
it is titled explainer.qt -- is this a usuable file extension?I'm not familiar with such. The .qtl file extension would be a "QT Media Link" but would be a very small file sinace all it dos is open QT Player, pass the location of the main file on a server, and tell the player how to play the file. Again, this looks like a case where it would be best to examine the download source for additional information.

  • Generic 'error opening movie' message

I received a copy of a video collection from a friend and when opening the disc, there is a generic error message that says "error opening movie." there is no reference number or anything.
the disc also does not open on my regular DVD player connected to my TV.
could it be the disc or is there something else i can do?

It could be any number of things, and without more information it's impossible to say which. I'd suggest you ask your friend what format the movie is in. Then someone here could probably provide further advice.
the disc also does not open on my regular DVD player connected to my TV.
That would only work if the disk was created as a video DVD. DVD players will normally not play data disks (at least I haven't run across any that can).

  • Can't open .mov files in quicktime anymore

I can't think of any system changes that I've made recently but a few days ago I was able to open .mov files with quicktime and now I can't. I get the following error when I try to open one. Error -1856: an unknown error occurred (filename.mov) I've uninstalled quicktime, rebooted and reinstalled with no luck. I've searched these forums and googled the error number but can't find anything. Does anyone know what might be going on? Thanks.

Actually, I can't open anything in quicktime anymore. I've tried opening avis, mov, mp4 and m4a files... all give the same error message and number. I've reinstalled both qt and itunes but no luck.

  • Movie won't open in Quicktime and won't save in iTunes

I have just finished editing a project and I am trying to share it to iTunes or Quicktime.
When I share it to "Apple Devices 720", it was automatically saved to the Final Cut Project file folder under "Shared Items", and inside I found the Quicktime file for the project. But it won't open in Quicktime, I am getting an error message that says:
"The document XXXXX (1280 x 720).m4v-TEMP” could not be opened. The movie's file format isn't recognized."
I tried to share it to iTunes, nothing works. I just want to be able to play it.
Ideally, I would like to be able to play the movie in iTunes on my iMac, and be able to sync it to iPod Touch.

Actually, I solved the problem. follow these instrudctions:
In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Preferences—the tilde (~) represents your Home folder.
Remove the "com.apple.finalcutpro.plist" file from the Preferences folder.
Remove the "Final Cut Pro User Data" folder from the Preferences folder.
If you can't find com.apple.finalcutpro.plist delete any com.apple.finalcut..... files.

  • .MOV file won't open in quicktime

    I have a Macbook Air OS 10 version 10.7.2 , Processor 1.68 ghz intel core i5, memory is 4gb 1333 mhz ddr3.
When i drag the .mov quicktime movie file into quicktime player i get this error message: "The document could not be opened. the movie's file format isn't recognized."
What do i need to download to make quicktime play this .mov file?
    thanks!

Quicktime isnt a very good movie player.  At all.  If the file isnt corrupted, and is actually a valid file, then I would download and use VLC Player.  It plays nearly every format of video file, and is completely FREE.  It IS possible however, that the file you are trying to play is damaged in some way, and wont be played by VLC either.  If VLC wont play it, the file is no good.

  • QuickTime X on Lion crashes on opening movie files

Hi — am running OS X 10.7.3 on a 2010 MacBook Air, and have discovered that QuickTime (10.1) will not open movie files (tested with .mov and .m4v so far).
    The error includes this line:
Terminating app due to uncaught exception 'NSInternalInconsistencyException', reason: '-[NSViewController loadView] could not load the "MGPlayerDocumentView" nib.'
And upon trying again I get the message:
The application “QuickTime Player” unexpectedly quit while trying to restore its windows.
Any suggestions on fixing this?  The files open fine in iTunes and VLC, but QuickTime crashes every time.  In earlier days I'd have reinstalled it, but with the download of Lion that doesn't seem to be an option (no installer files available).

Ah well.  Resorted to reinstalling Lion from the recovery partition, and that seems to have fixed it.

  • Try to open mov file with quicktime, says can't open pdf files.

    Hi to everyone,
Suddenly I try to open a mov, any mov file, with quicktime 10.4 and some times opens the finder and nothing more, some times says that it cannot open one pdf document ( a document I actually have but never try to open with QT). some times QT says it canot open some png or jpg file.
But I double click mov files. And the incoherence is permanent, I mean that for the same movie file says it can't open the same pdf file, and in other file the same png, or the same jpg.. it depends on the mov file I try to open.  Like if somewhere, somme kind of cache, adresse or reference is wrong.
this is the text of one of those messages when I double click a mov file:
"The document “phoenixRoomfillerB_v001_0104.jpg” could not be opened. QuickTime Player cannot open files in the “JPEG image” format."
And if I try again and again, at some point QT open only the finder window.
The weird thing is that on the finder window i can see the preview and play the preview. and the same mov files play well with VLC. And if I copy the mov file to my desktop it plays well unless QT start to open only the finder window, if that happens it does not work anymore with any file.
The files are on an external drive with 3 partitions.
And I make all the possible cleaning that I can:
I am the administrator of the imac and I am the only one to use it.
I am the owner of the volume
I use disk utility to check and everything is ok
I use onyx to clean as much as possible, cache, boot, volume structure, smart status, home folder permissions, kernel, extensions, QT components, etc. and everything works fine.
    Imac 27 inch late 2012.
    Intel 3.4 GHz  i7
    32 Gb Ram
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680MX 2048 MB
    thanx.

Try QT v7.x which is located inside your Utility folder.

  • Help! Movies from iPhone 5 play in slow motion when opened in Quicktime on PC

    Hi there,
I was hoping someone may have the answer or have encountered this problem as well, as I have been unable to find anything on it elsewhere on the net.
I have transferred some movies, taken on my iPhone 5, to my PC. However when they are opened in Quicktime (as recommended) they play in slow motion.
However, the sound still plays at normal speed.
I have already tried going into the QT settings where you can speed up the playback, but this doesn't work either, no matter how fast I set it to - they still play super slow.
Although they are taking up heaps of space, I am worried to delete the movies off the iPhone in case they have not copied over properly and I lose the originals!
    Any suggestions?
    Many thanks!

Hi Matthias, thanks for your response!
We are running on Windows XP, is that what you mean? I will try and download the VLC player and see what happens. Are iPhone 5 movies higher res than iPhone 4, as we can play those?
If it is the system, do you know whether or not if I save the movies to our PC, then transfer than to another computer, should they play ok? I just don't want to delete them off my phone and have them permanently slow, iykwim?
Sorry if my ignorance is showing - I'm not overly tech savvy when it comes to this stuff!
    Many thanks again!
