Error opening or saving certain attachements in Mail.app

I have encountered a problem with certain attachments in Mail.app. I couldn't find any solution on the Internets, but I eventually figured it out and thought I should post it here.
This has been a rare issue (only happened twice so far) and may be related to OmniGraffle files.
The problem: When clicking to open the attachment or trying to save the attachment, I got the error: Mail was unable to save the attachment “file.name” to disk. Please verify your downloads folder exists and is writable.
The solution:
1. I found the message in the mail folder.
2. I made a copy of it (just to be safe) and opened the copy in TextEdit.
3. Within that message, I found the following header marking the start of the offending file:
--Apple-Mail-4-912721465
Content-Disposition: attachment;
filename=file.extension.zip
Content-Type: application/zip;
x-mac-auto-archive=yes;
name="file.extension.zip"
Content-Transfer-Encoding: base64
4. I changed both references to "file.extension.zip" to just "file.zip"
5. Save and double-click on the file to open it in Mail.app
6. Now the offending file should appear as a folder and you can open and save it. The file you really want access to is within this folder.
Notes: Both times my problem was with an OmniGraffle file. Maybe this is a clue, or maybe not. Also, I believe the problem has something to do with the file being zipped (or the way Mail.app handles .zip files), but have no proof!
I have no idea why this problem is occurring, but if anyone has anything to add, please do-- I'm posting here mainly to share a strange solution to a strange problem. The more info the better.

These permissions bugs in Lion are pretty prevalent and I've had to reset a lot of application defaults since migrating between machines. Do the following and let me know if it works:
Copy your Mail and Mail Downloads folders in ~/Library/ ( where "~" is referring to your User). Paste these folders your copied into something on your desktop as a back up.
Then navigate to ~/Library/Preferences and find the two .plist files named, "com.apple.mail.plist" and "com.apple.mail.plist.lockedfile" and delete them.
Relaunch Mail.
Relaunching should cause a new .plist file to generate that reads as defualt and using the contents of your ~/Library/Mail folder your OS X Mail shoudl look like it did.
I have issues changing prefs in mail and seem to have a bigger bug at work since I continually have to trash my mail.plist once a week or else I can't connect to my SMTP server. But this always works and I get rid of the, "...writing preferences to your disk has failed..." message.

Does the mail app display whatever is in the document without the ability to differentiate between hidden or non hidden images?
The mail app will not display fillable form fields in PDF files that can be seen in real PDF apps. I say real PDF apps because the form fields in PDF apps will not appear in the iBooks app either. IMO, iBooks is not a real PDF app.
So, I would say that the mail app cannot differentiate between hidden and non hidden items

  • Why "Open in pages" not showing in Mail app ?

    Hey!
I just bought Pages and Keynote apps, and i'm trying to open PDF files from Mail app.
The problem is that in "Open in..." , Pages and Keynotes are not in the list of applications!
    Someone know why?

You can annotate pdf files with Good Reader - using the paid version anyway. I didn't know there was a free version.
    http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/goodreader-for-ipad/id363448914?mt=8
There are other apps that will let you annotate pdf files as well. iAnnotate is another.

BTW - you can import Word Documents into Pages as well as Pages documents. But you are looking for a solution for pdf files. Check out the apps above and you can search for othes.

  • Photo size reduced when attached to mail app, from PHOTOS APP in OS X 10.10.3

When I try to attach a photo from photos app to mail app, the photo size is reduced, even 'ACUTAL SIZE' is selected in mail app.
I have tried out to solve this issue, but could not find any way out. Is this a bug in PHOTOS app? Previously it was happening with iPhoto also, which was subsequently rectified by an iPhoto update.
Pl. help, if anybody has any solution

I made a mistake, sorry. I meant something different than  I wrote.
When you share the photo from Photos to Mail, there are no quality settings in the Share dialog at all. The email window will only have the the options "Actual size", "Large", "medium", .... but no compression settings.
Actual size send the actual pixel size. But it is not clear, how badly the quality will be reduced by the compression.
That is why I compared the result to the file sizes that I get, when I use "File > Export", where I can select the quality.
I found that the compression and quality in "Share > Mail > Actual Size" is similar to "File > Export" with the JPEG Quality setting "High".

  • Opening or saving photo attachment; add to iphoto option on save

On my computer, in the Mail application, I always see the "Add to iPhoto" option on the Save button when someone has sent me a photo regardless of whether it is one or several. Does anyone know if there's some way to make this option show or not? I was working with someone on their first version Intel iMac which we had just upgraded to Leopard, and on one e-mail with several photos, the option showed. However, on an e-mail with only one picture it did not. Does anyone know what makes the "Add to iPhoto" option show or not show?
My other question is regarding the contextual menu option "Open with" that shows when I right-click a photo received as an attachment in an e-mail. On my computer, when I right-click and then click this "Open with" option, I see a list of several options for opening the picture, one of which is "Import and View with iPhoto." When I looked at this on the person's computer referenced above, there were no programs listed, only the "other" option which opens a window for you to locate the program you want to use. I did not populate the list on my computer--the choices simply were there when I clicked "Open With." Does anyone know what makes these options appear in this list?
I ask because this person I am helping is not very computer savvy and these are the easiest ways for her to get pictures sent to her into her iPhoto library. I've tried searching Apple support and these boards, but haven't come up with an answer. Does it possibly have anything to do with the version of iPhoto you are running, or is it something to do with Mail? Thanks for any help on this.

    Ernie,
Thanks for your response. I took a look at the article you mention and will perhaps try replacing the preferences file mentioned if no other solution comes to light. I won't be able to try this right away as I won't be at the person's house right away. She is the main user of the computer and does have Admin privileges.
She had called me a week or so ago wanting to know how to get a photo someone sent her into her iPhoto library, and when I was explaining how to do it, the options available to me on my computer were not available on hers. So, when I was there yesterday, after upgrading her system to Leopard, I went into Mail and was going to show her how to get the photo into iPhoto. I thought maybe the difference was I already had Leopard and she was still using Tiger. However, the "Add to iPhoto" option wasn't listed on the Save menu in the mail with the picture nor was the "Open With" list populated. However, when I went to another message in her mail with several pictures attached, the "Add to iPhoto" option was there on the Save menu. That got me curious about why these things would be different. Why would the "Add to iPhoto" option show on a message with multiple pictures and not on the message with just one picture? On my computer, I get the message regardless if there is one picture or several in the message.
I see that article you referenced mentions the list getting populated based on programs that are used, so maybe I should try opening various programs and seeing if that gets them added.
Any other thoughts you have would be welcome.

  • Open any type of attachment in mail from a POP account

When I receive any type of attachment in email (pop account) the attachment shows up as a "winmail.dat" Why is it not showing up as PDF, xls or doc etc...?
    Iphone 1.1.3 16g
I would like to be able to open any type of attachments that come into my email.
    Thanks

This is a Microslop proprietary problem/bug when the sender of a message uses Outlook as their email client and uses RTF for message composition, and especially when sent thru an Exchange Server.
    http://www.pchell.com/support/winmaildat.shtml
Funny that Microslop names this document - "How to prevent the Winmail.dat file from being sent to Internet Users" as if those not using Outlook as their email client and not thru an exchange server are from another planet or something. This is MS proprietary garbage they have known about for a very long time but refuse to do anything about.
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q138053/
Long story short, as your Outlook using friends to compose all messages sent to you in Plain Text (preferably) or HTML. Not RTF.

Not wanting to start another topic, is anyone else having issues with the new Lion Mail?
First: is there any way to turn off the jps in the image and just send them as a file? I hate remembering to make sure the cursor is set to the best location for the inserted images
The problem I see is sending more than one file. Im not so sure the second plus file is attached.
I know for sure the image of the scond file is normally half gone.

  • Why can't I open a jpeg photo from my mail app on my iPad?

I never have problems doing so. However, someone just sent me a 528kb jpeg photo and I can't open it.
    What is causing the issue?
    Thanks!

There is no download button at the end of the mail. Usually I just tap on the photo and it download itself.... I've received other photos in the meantime, also Joel and these ones I can open... I don't understand! :-S

no emails are showing in the archive or any other folder. Not even the trash folder.

  • Creating or opening and attachment in Mail freezes the Dock

On my MBP, when opening or creating an attachment in Mail, the Dock becomes frozen.
Clicking on it has no effect and the white dot remains on Apps that have closed; it is totally frozen. (It acts like a picture of the Dock>)
    Restarting clears it.
Sometimes, but not always, Logging out and back in clears it.
I reapplied the SL updater, this time starting up from the upgrade disk.
I have repaired permissions and run Preferential Treatment to look for corrupted preferences, no problem identified.

    HI Chris,
    Quit Mail if it's open
Try dragging your Mail icon up off the Dock. It will go "poof" ... then open your Applications folder and launch Mail. If the Dock isn't cooperating, select the Mail icon and click: Keep in Dock.
If that doesn't work... even though you used PT, locate this file.
    com.apple.Dock.plist
/Users/YourName/Library/Preferences. Drag that file from the Preferences folder to the Trash, empty the Trash and restart your Mac.

  • Can't open PDF email attachments from mail app. (iOS7, iPad2)

Since upgrading to iOS7 I cannot open PDF email attachments from the "Mail" app. The attachment appears as a "tap to download" icon, after downloading it appears as an image of the first page of the PDF. An extended press of the PDF image results in "save image" and "copy" options, but no "open in" option.
I have tried closing and re-opening mail, restarting the iPad, several different attachments. Still no "Open in" option.
    Any help with this?

I work in a support organization and we've seen variations of this issue develop on various iphones and ipads with ios7.  Oddly, not everyone is experiencing this, just some people.
In my own case, I simply downloaded Acrobat Reader for free and can read the things fine.
We use an exchange activesync email server and when each email comes in it indicates at the very bottom that it has been downloaded as plain text and to click to download the entire message.  I've tried clicking to download and not clicking and I can read the PDF either way.
In my own case I can view PDF files and/or also save them by pressing and holding the icon of the PDF in the email.
The other thing one of our end users noticed: if she emailed the PDF directly to her iPhone5 and iPad it would not be readable but if she forwarded it to her offsite Yahoo account and then forward to her corporate email it would open.
I think there's definetely something going on with the formatting of the PDF (was it created by a true Adobe PDF distiller or one of the many clones?), what email application attached it? (Outlook, Eudora, IOS Mail, etc) and how many PDF reading apps are on your IOS devices?
For instance I have the default PDF reader, iBooks, Kindle, Adobe Acrobat Reader, and there may be others that I don't even know has PDF capability.   Only Apple probably has a good idea of how many apps utilize this.

  • Mail.app 8 / Yosemite problem attaching another e-mail

When using the option forward as attachement on Mail.app Yosemite the attachment lose the .eml or .emlx and it's not easy to open when receiving it.
It always worked fine until OS X Mavericks, but it's not.
Dows anyone know how to fix it?

Have you tried closing the Mail app completely ? From the home screen double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of the Mail app to close it, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.
You could also then try a reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

  • Mail app crashes when InDesign opens a new document

I am using InDesign CS5.5 and the standard mac Mail on an imac running OSX 10.7.3. When I open an existing InDesign file the mail app crashes. It doesnt do this with any other application.
Has anyone had the same experience ad could let me know how to fix this please.

I use the exact same configuration on two computers with no problems whatsoever.
I can't think of why InDesign would have anything to do with Mail crashing unless you're severely constrained in RAM on your computer.

  • Can't Open (Sign In) to Mail App with "work account"

First, I absolutely hate Microsoft Accounts and everything they imply. With that in mind, everything I do with Windows 8.1 I try to avoid or hack around Microsoft Accounts.
Following the instructions provided in the this technet blog:
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/pauljones/archive/2013/10/07/windows-8-1-mail-app-without-microsoft-account.aspx
I had hoped to gain access to the Mail App without a Microsoft Account.
Apparently, even this "fix" was snake oil.
First let me say, it's not that I can't sign into the Mail App. I can't open it. The entrance to the Mail App is purposefully blocked by the need for a Microsoft Account or some mysterious "Sign in with your work account".
The actual details needed to for that "work account" (is it an "Enterprise Account"??) are not documented and there is no way around it.
The instructions that Microsoft does provide tell me to swipe and open up settings... then add an account--like IMAP. That is impossible to perform, because the mail app is not open. The settings for the Mail App are not available and there is no "account"
    button to press yet.
So my question is simple. How do I fake the Mail App into thinking there is some "work account" that will open the front door and let me configure basic IMAP email, etc. You know, like in the old simple way that work for thirty years before the
brown's at microsoft decided to change it.

My best answer would be to suggest you use Thunderbird Email client.
However I have had success with a combination of the following Group Policy settings
Run the program "gpedit" (gpedit.msc) and after making the changes you can run "gpupdate /force" to apply the changes to the current logged in user, or simply restart the computer.
You can totally disable the use of Microsoft Accounts and the Windows Store, while still allowing users to make used of already installed Windows Store Apps.
NB: If you want to use any Windows Store Apps, install the apps before disabling Windows Store.
You can still enable the automatic updating of Windows Store Apps, even when the Windows Store is disabled.
Computer Configuration\Windows Settings\Security Settings\Local Policies\Security Options\"Accounts: Block Microsoft accounts" to "Users can't add or log on with Microsoft accounts"
Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\System\Internet Communications Management\Internet Communications settings\"Turn off access to the Store" to "Disabled"
Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\App runtime\"Allow Microsoft accounts to be optional" to "Enabled"  (NB: allows the use of Windows Store apps even when the use of a Microsoft Account is disabled, this setting will be
required if you want to use the Mail App)
Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Store\"Turn off the Store application" to "Enabled"
Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Store\"Turn off Automatic Download and Install of updates" to "Enabled"
Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Store\"Turn off Automatic Download of updates on Win8 machines" to "Enabled"
    If you want to disable Syncing of data, see;
    Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Sync your settings\"Do not sync passwords"
You may have to try connecting with few different email accounts, I was about to succeed with a Exchange account.
