Error possibly on mac mini 10.4.11

After the last security update, all of the letters in all text on my desktop turned into squares with a CAP "A" in the middle of the square. Anything that I open in the finder has the exact same text problem. Een the names of my harddrive and external...anything that show up on the desktop. I can open apps just fine but the box is in the top bar.
Does anyone know what this is? It obviously must be a bug in the system somehow. It is really hard to navigate to where i need to look since every letter looks the same.

Hi Loribwith, and a warm welcome to the forums!

First...
Could be many things, we should start with this...
"Try Disk Utility
1. Insert the Mac OS X Tiger Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.
Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates.
May even need to do an Archive and Install if you have room on the HD, but saves all your files and gives a new OS...
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120
I only use Software Update to see what is needed, then get them for real via...
http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/
That way I can wait a week or so, check the forums for potential problems, and get Permissions & such in order before installing.
If all the above fails, then it appears to be time for a relatively painless Archive & Install, which gives you a new/old OS, but can preserve all your files, pics, music, settings, etc., as long as you have plenty of free disk space and no Disk corruption, and is relatively quick & painless...

Just be sure to select Preserve Users & Settings.

  • Mode not supported error on my mac mini help!!!

I have an 18 month old mac mini with a proview monitor.
The problem is that for the past month whenever I have restarted my mac i intermittently get a black monitor screen after the apple loading one and a monitor error message box saying 'mode not supported'. I thought it was a monitor problem, tried the auto reset button ect on it and tried ever display setting on my mac to no avail. Detecting displays in the sys prefs would also cause this problem and under my warrenty with PC world they are sending me another monitor.
If i reboot the mac by the power button on the back eventually after anything between 10 - 30 times it will all be ok. (not good for my mac or my sanity!) and only ok till i need to restart, sleep or turn off the mac.
Tonight I tried to boot from the install disk, monitor working ok this way and ran disk utility, a few permissions repaired but no other probs.
Ive firewired it to my old imac to try and see if i can change any settings but cant and the monitor is showing the firewire flashing about no probs.
So it seems its my mac thats the problem, short of a full install does anyone have any ideas?
Im just stabbing in the dark so far so could use some help

  • LaCie 500g Big Disk getting hardware error on new Mac Mini

I accidentally unplugged the power cord on my new MacMini (it looks and feels very much like a firewire cable!) After that my LaCie Big Disk became unsearchable. It WILL mount with both Firewire and USB2.0 cables. I ran Disk Utility. I do not get the option to repair ANY permissions on either the Volume or the Disk itself only the option to "Verify Disk" or "Repair Disk". The resulting error is posted below. It is no longer searchable on the OS 9.2.2 G4 computer either.
I DO have the latest software updates. This external LaCie hard drive was Mac HFS+ formatted and working previously on OS9.2.2 and I will need to switch it back and forth between the OS 9.2. computer and my new MacMini. Have I any other choice but to reformat? If so which format will allow back and forth usage between OS 9 and OS X?

Mac Mini   Mac OS X (10.4.5)   2 gb memory, SuperDrive, Intel DualCore

Hi Kim, I had a similar (although not exactly the same) experience to yours when I first got my LaCie (which is a d2, 250 GB) and accidentally cut power (with the power button on the HD itself) to the disk while my computer was in sleep mode. Since it was my boot drive, I also got kernel panics, and the only way I was able to get rid of them (and get a working system) was an Erase & Install of OS X. Fortunately, I was able to retrieve all my files, but you seem unable to browse it anymore, I guess that's what you mean when you say it isn't "searchable". Hope you had a good backup solution ...
What Disk Utility reports - Invalid Node Structure - is exactly the same issue I had, and Disk Utility doesn't seem able to repair it easily. Since you don't seem to use the drive to boot, you can simply reformat it using Disk Utility. I would suggest HFS+, and if you want to boot OS 9, select the "Install OS 9 drivers" option.
BTW I'm not sure whether you can get a dual-boot OS 9/OS X for Intel system (in case you'd be interested), because booting off an external drive on a Macintel requires the drive to be formatted with the GUID partition scheme, whereas OS 9 porbably only works with Apple's partition scheme.

  • Is virtual hosting possible on Mac Mini OSX 10.8.5?

I have a Macmini4,1 with an Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4 GHz processor with 8 GB Memory. I want to use it as a webserver for half a dozen websites with fully qualified domain names running as virtual domains under one IP address. They have been running fine on an older Mac Mini with 4 GB Memory running OSX Server 10.5.4 for several years, but I'm afraid that machine is going to curl up and die shortly.
I have purchased the 'new" $20 Server App 2.2.1, but I'm not convinced it's capable of handling them, and if it is it's sorely lacking instructions.
What server software should I use with the newer computer?

With Apache directly or via Server.app (Mountain Lion) or Server Admin (Snow Leopard Server) you can define a website to be a normal http unencrypted site, or a https encrypted site. For unencrypted http sites you do not have to have a certificate.
It is also possible to generate your own self-signed certificate although this would not be user friendly in this scenario. What might be a more worthwhile possibility if needed is that you can be what is called a 'wildcard' certificate e.g. *.domain.com i.e. anything.domain.com however it sounds like in your case you want multiple domains rather than multiple hosts so this would not perhaps help you.
    So to confirm
    http://www.domain1.com/
    http://www.domain2.co.uk/
    would not need a certificate.

  • Errore proporzioni video mac mini middle 2010

Come posso risolvere?
    Grazie a tutti anticipatamente

Platactico, a couple of things come to mind when I read your post. First question is about the length of the HDMI cable in use. Is is more than 2 meters long? Once a cable gets past 2 m, and certainly by 5 m, the quality of the cable can play a role, and you see cases where one device can drive that length, like your PS3, but another device cannot. So if the cable is longer than 2 m, consider its quality and try a better one, or a shorter one.
Another point I would like to make about something that is different between a PS3 and a Mac, there is embedded in both a DVI and HDMI cable something called the Display Data Channel (DDC). The data moving across this channel is critical to a Mac in its operation with a display. With other types of consumer electronics devices, it is not used in the same way, or not used at all. So just because your HDMI cable is proven to pass video data using a PS3, there could still be problems with the cable relative to the DDC. So that's another reason to be trying a different HDMI cable.

  • Usb3 errors on new mac mini (late 2014)

    Hello to Everyone,
    i have the following problem:
USB3 Devices does not work on my new MacMini (Late 2014).
I tried different USB3 Devices/Adapters with SSD/SATA Drives Connected and they are recognized by the system,
but when trying to access them, they just hang, or the MacMini reboots randomly when accessing usb3 devices !
This happens with Yosemita and Win8.1 either.
Connecting the SSD/SATA Drives with USB2 Adapters, works fine.
Connecting the same USB3 Adapters to another Computer with USB3 (like MacMini 2013) everything works fine, too.
Anyone has an idea or the same problem ?
Hopefully Apple releases an Bios update soon.
    regards,
    Stefan

  • I want to install Snow Leopard Server on our MacPro (2.66) using Mac Mini Snow Leopard Server disks?  I kept getting an error for backwards compatibility.   Is this possible or do I need to purchase another copy of Snow Leopard Server?

I want to install Snow Leopard Server on our MacPro(2.66) using Mac Mini Snow Leopard Server disks?  I kept getting an error for backwards compatibility.   Is this possible or do I need topurchase another copy of Snow Leopard Server?

The OS disks that are shipped with a particular product
are set up so that tey will only install on that product.
It will install on any Mini of that exact vintage, but that
    is all.
This is to prevent people from doing exactly what you
are trying to do.  The license for OSX shipped with any
is only valid for that product.  Also, Snow Leopard,
including Server, is only permitted to be run on one
computer at a time.  Bottom line, unlike Lion, legally
you cannot install the same copy on multiple
computers unless some "family pack" or site license
    is purchased.
Yes, you need to purchase another copy.
The copy of Snow Leopard license is here:

  • After changing my mac mini 2009 with a mac mini late 2012, and using Time machine for the reinstallation, Lightroom is operational but Photoshop elements is said to have a license no more valid (code error 150:30). I tried all solution I found to no avail

After changing my computer from a mac mini 2009 to a late 2012 version, all reloaded with Time machine, Lightroom works fine but Photoshop elements refuses to start (error code 150:30; "license no more valid"...). No solution found on the internet works. Any advice ? possibility to reload the application (I have kept the number of license etc.) ? Thanks in advance to anyone who could help.

Alain Picard this error often occurs due to incorrect file permissions or corruption of licensing data during the Time Machine restore.  What version of Photoshop Elements were you using?  I would recommend that you remove and reinstall it using the uninstaller located in the Applications/Utilities/Adobe Installers folder.

Your Mac must be on Lion (10.7) to run iCloud. Apple had to change the operating system to fully support it. Nevertheless, it is possible to get emails from iCloud without having Lion. Please tell me if this interests you.
Anyways, here is the link to buy Lion (30 dollars, totally worth the upgrade ): http://itunes.apple.com/be/app/os-x-lion/id444303913?mt=12

  • Mac Mini - AHT error

    Hi
Having a few problems installing OSX (10.4.7) from install disk on MAC MINI 1.8, Just run Apple Hardware Test (AHT) and am getting back the following:
Alert! Apple Hardware Test detected an error:
    4SNS / 1 / 40000002: Center_Upper-Front
Any ideas to what this relates?
    Regards
    Giddy2k

That MacOS installer is correct for the 'Late 2006' Mac minis (you can check in the grid in http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1159?viewlocale=en_US) and the 'Late 2006' mini includes a 1.83GHz Core Duo model (as shown at http://support.apple.com/kb/SP29). Thus if your mini has a superdrive (DVD burner) and 80Gb internal HD, it seems highly probable the installer is the correct one. If the model number (on a small sticker around the base of the mini) indicates it to be an MA608LL/A then it is the correct installer.
That being the case, the sort of problems on the hard drive that could cause the boot issues you are experiencing would not necessarily show up in the SMART status, since it's more likely to be corruption on the drive than drive failure. I'm curious about your comment +repair eventually sorting HD volume out ok+ since that suggests there were drive issues discovered during disk repair. That being the case you may be suffering a failing drive, or Disk Utility may not have correctly resolved the problem(s).
In this situation, I'd be tempted to boot to the installer, and perform a custom 'Erase and Install', to ensure the drive is wiped before MacOS is installed. If there is an data corruption or damaged catalog (which would cause subsequent issues) the erase will resolve them. If, after that, the system will still not boot, I'd suggest it is increasingly possible there's a fault with the drive or the drive controller on the logic board.
Of course with a used mini and a possibility that it has previously been doctored, it might be more problematic than usual to narrow it down to a specific cause if the above doesn't resolve it.
