ERROR:process_filesystem needs a partition at $1

I'm using current latest stable build.Installing on hdd went fine and boots flawlessly, but when i've tryed to disconnect hdd and install archlinux on sd card i've got an error ERROR:process_filesystem needs a partition at $1 after finishing partitioning, tryed to partition automatically and manually - same error. how can i get to work installation on sd card. i've created boot partition, root and home. tryed two different sd-cards and tryed to additionally create swap on sd but always getting same error about ...10 iterations... and ...process-filesystem...

Hi Satria,
It is very difficult to say whether there is duplication of data from here.
You can do the following checks.. Since your PC is scheduled to run on daily basis, it means each infopackage must run once every day. Check in Branch 4 if any of the infopackages have more than once on that day.
Though there is duplication in ODS, it might get corrected in the Cube if Overwrite update is used. So deeper analysis need to be done.
So I think you will have to wait and watch. If there is it wduplication then obviously ill get reflected in the Reports on Cube. Once you are sure of this, you will have to deeper analysis.
If nobody has problem with the reports, then all is fine.

  • Do I need to partition external drive?

I'm about to format my first external hard drive and am unsure whether I need to partition it as I'm new to this (my experience of backing up is limited to emailing files to my webmail provider's server). I bought the drive primarily for backup in case something catastrophic happens to my Mac but I understand an external drive has other useful functions; question is, are they useful to me?
One friend said I should make the external drive bootable.
Another said I could put my iTunes on it to free up space on my Mac. I have just over 50GB of music (but this is constantly expanding) and 147GB free on the Mac's drive.
Ideally I'd like to back up automatically every night.
    All comments welcome, thanks.

Keep it simple. If you have the space just clone the entire internal drive to the external on a regular basis. Most all backup utilities have a scheduler option. You don't need to partition it. If you have a logical volume disc error the other partitions may still work fine. If you have a hard drive failure you can lose all the partitions.
Some uses for multiple partitions: different OS versions, if you want to boot in 10.3, 10.4, 10.5, or boot camp into WinXP or Vista, each of these can reside in it's own separate partition. Software developers (who can't afford multiple machines?) sometimes test software on different OS versions using a multiple boot system.
Some say that disc access times are slightly improved when searching over a smaller partition as opposed to the whole large drive, not sure if this is really true or not, or if the difference is really significant. So you might boot faster from a smaller partition with just the OS on it, and with User files on another partition, or apps might launch faster when read from a smaller partition, again that's just speculation.
(And, not applicable to your situation, but some older computers/OSs require it, for example the old out-of-production Beige Power Macintosh G3 Desktop computers can only boot OS X from the first partition <8GB in size on the built-in ATA bus. Also, OS 9 can not boot from a partition larger than 200GB.)

  • I receive an error while trying to partition my Harddrive back to one.

So I have messed around with using bootcamp and and disk utlity to create partitions for Ubuntu. I decided to erase the extra partition and give all the space back to my macintosh HD. I go to the partition tab in disk utility and drag the macintosh box to fill the whole box and then hit apply. After a few moments I then recieve the error saying:
    "Partition failed with the error:
Couldn’t modify partition map because file system verification failed."
I ran a verfiy disk on my macintosh hd and then recieve these errors:
    Invalid volume file count
(It should be 545026 instead of 544821)
    Invalid volume directory count
(It should be 140857 instead of 140673)
    Invalid volume free block count
(It should be 123856639 instead of 123864717)
    Volume header needs minor repair
The volume Macintosh HD was found corrupt and needs to be repaired.
Error: This disk needs to be repaired using the Recovery HD. Restart your computer, holding down the Command key and the R key until you see the Apple logo. When the Mac OS X Utilities window appears, choose Disk Utility.
I then command R while boot and repair the drive. Tried resizing the parition again and same error.
I have spent some time googling what people have done but find this problem occuring with alot of people upgrading to Lion or something. I'm on a 2011-late macbook pro that came with lion.
I have tried things such as doing the Lion restore and booting in command S and typing fsck -fy for a repair. Nothing work.
I am about two hours away from a "genius bar" so fixing this problem on my own is a must.

When disk repair fails, it usually is not a good sign and could mean you ave a failing hardrive. All I can suggest is to back up all your data. My choice would be either SuperDuper or CarbonCopy Cloner
Then do reformat and do a clean install and test.

  • Input / Output Error when creating GUID Partition on External Drives

I've been trying to setup an install of OS X on an external device and therefore need to partition them to the GUID Partition Scheme.
I've tried it with my iPod and an External Hard Disk Drive and no matter what I do, I get the error:
Exited with Error: Input / Output Error
Thats all I get. I can partition them with either of the other two choices, but of course those wont let me boot an Intel Based Mac.
The External HDD is USB 2.0, the iPod I've tried both USB and Firewire, and have not had any luck. I know it can be done, but am not sure why I'm having this problem.
    Any suggestions?

I'm having the same problem. Trying to format an external drive with the GUID scheme fails.
    # diskutil eraseDisk HFS+ Test GPTFormat /dev/disk1
    Started erase on disk disk1
    Creating Partition Map
error writing partition map: Invalid argument (22)
Partitioning encountered error Invalid argument (22) on disk disk1
I've tried this on my Intel MacBook and on my PPC Mac Mini. Tried using a generic USB2 flash disk and also an iPod shuffle. Always the same error.
Is GUID broken on external drives?

  • [SOLVED] Error mounting a Fat32 partition

Hi, I'm new to this distro, but it looks quite neat. Unfortunately, I have an issue that I haven't been able to solve through the wiki or the man pages.
I have my main hard drive partitioned in three:
    - Windows (ntfs)
    - Linux (ext3)
    - Data (all my files, docs, images...) (fat32)
I have problems mounting the Data partition into Archlinux.
    A) Trying manually
First I tried mounting it manually to make sure I had done it right. The command
    sudo mount -t vfat /dev/sda5 /media/docs
allowed me to see and read the files and write them. When I switched back to Windows, however, the OS told me there was an error in the Data partition, specifically with all the files I have changed or created using Archlinux. I ran Chkdsk and it fixed the files by deleting changes. Now, whenever I try to mount manually the partition, it mount it as a read-only file system, even when the -w or the -rw option is added.
    B) Writting in /etc/fstab
Meanwhile, I tried several options in fstab to see if I could write on the disk. The lines I tried are:
    /dev/sda5 /media/docs vfat defaults 0 0
    /dev/sda5 /media/docs vfat defaults,iocharset=utf8,umask=000 0 0
    /dev/sda5 /media/docs vfat defaults,user,dmask=000,fmask=111 0 0
    /dev/sda5 /media/docs vfat defaults,user,rw,umask=000, 0 0
    /dev/sda5 /media/docs vfat user,rw,umask=000, 0 0
    /dev/sda5 /media/docs vfat defaults,iocharset=utf8,user,rw,umask=000, 0 0
All these options (I obviously didn't use them at the same time) mounted the partition and I could read the files, but I was never able to write to it, either as a normal user or root. I read the wiki, the man page of fstab and mount and there isn't anything much of help there.
Hope someone can help me. Thanks a lot.
    R
P.D. I've been doing all these switching back and forwrad between windows and linux. I have always hibernated windows. I don't think this is the problem, but I will shut Windows down completely to see if it was the Chkdsk utility.

Sorry, I forgot to post the answer...
So I just needed to restart Windows after using Chkdsk. Now I can read and write even when Windows is only hibernated. I'm just curious. I understand that this problem was a very stupid question, but it wasn't obvious to me that Chkdsk needed a reboot to "let go" the partition. Why is that?
    Thanks for your help.
By the way, I've learned a lot with the wiki guides. This distro is getting better and better!

  • HT201250 Do I need to partition my external hard drive if I'm using Time Machine and other storage?

I never used Time Machine before.  I was storing select files on my external hard drive as well as using my libraries (IPhoto, ITune, IMovies) directly off of the external hard drive.  That hard drive is giving me problems, so I bought a new one.  I want to set up Time Machine on this one, but I also want to keep my active libraries on it.  Do I need to partition the external hard drive?

You can partition the new drive, just don't make one of the partitons a TimeMachine drive, save a TM for a entire drive with more space than the boot drive as it saves "states" thus requires more room than most people expect.
I highly advise one drive to one drive for backups, and not placing too many backup eggs in one vulnerable hardware basket basically.
Drives are cheap, data is not. Hardware can fail just as often as software, so you need a multiple backup and storage stragedy to protect even against theft and fire.

  • Do I need to partition my external hard drive for a bootable backup

Hi - First, I apologize for asking a question that's already been discussed so much.  I did try to read everything I could, but I remain confused.  Here is my precise situation:
I have an iMac, and I purchased a year's worth of Carbonite's online backup and breathed a sigh of relief.  Then I read some people have problems with Carbonite, and the best advice was to buy an external hard drive, which I did.  It just arrived, I plugged it in, and Time Machine backed up my computer on it...so I breathed another sigh of relief.
Then I read that my wonderful new 2T external hard drive isn't good enough, that I should partition it so as to have one backup, and one "bootable backup."  Is this really necessary?  And what is the difference between a backup, and a bootable backup?  If it is necessary, how do I do it?  Is it a problem that I've already used it to create a backup on Time Machine?
I use my computer for things like email, Facebook, pictures, eBay, stuff like that.  I have no unusual needs.  My computer is an iMac OS X 10.6.8.
Thank you in advance for any help you can offer!

I prefer a clone/bootable backup ovver Time Machine myself.
For TM you need a running OS, then time to restore, with a clone you can boot from that & keep working while doing the other when time is better. And you can test a clone before you need it.

  • I have partitioned my time capsule, but I can't get it to work as a Time Machine back up and permanent media server for both mac and PC. What format do I need to partition the drive to so that it works for both mac and windows and so that it will be visab

I have partitioned my time capsule, as I want part of it to act as a media server for both mac and windows. However I don't know what format that I need to partition it to. I also can't make it a permanently accesible drive. I want to restore the drive to the original format (which I don't know) and start again and re-partition the drive in a format that can be used for media by both mac and PC and for time machine back-ups and make the media part of it permanetly accesible so I can add and acccess my files.
    Thanks

You are mixing up a couple of things here.
The TC drive cannot be partitioned without removing it.. did you do that?
If you partition it you must use a Mac disk utility and use the HFS+ ie standard Mac format. And GUID partition table not windows type.
You can select erase disk in the airport utility.. that will take the disk back to original format. No partitions. TC is deliberately not partitioned as it is not a media server.. it is a backup device for TM. Over time .. the disk will be filled with TM backups so you have a long history of file changes to your computer.
There is no media server in the TC.. it is merely disk storage.. you can serve files from it to a media device.. but the TC itself is dumb as dumb.
Now the actual format of the drive is irrelevant to the PC.. The TC offers SMB file services to the network. You can copy files to and from the TC as if it was a local disk without caring one iota about the format. The TC handles that .. it is not a local disk .. it is a network drive.
Although you cannot partition the TC. you can still copy files to it.. this does have implications for TM.. but as long as there is plenty of free space should not be a major issue.
You can create a disk image via the disk utility in a Mac.. and as stated you can create partitions if you do it on a Mac with the disk directly connected which means breaking warranty if any exists on the TC.

  • "itunes has experienced an error and needs to close"

while trying to import my c.d. collection to itunes, i quite often get the message "itunes has experienced an error and needs to close. do you want to send the error to microsoft?" it usually takes me about 20 minutes to import 1 c.d. to itunes becuase i have to keep re-opening itunes after it closes. i never lose anything i have already imported. sometimes i will get through 5 songs before i get the error message, sometimes i cant get through a single song. whats the deal here??

What if you try importings CDs to your computer (not to iTunes) Is this normally working? If yes the problem is in ITunes and if no the problem is maybe your CD player. If the problem is in iTunes you should try to download the latest version from the Apple pages and then update/reinstall.

  • "iTunes has encountered an error and needs to close" -Gapless Playback

I've had this problem for a while now and I'm just plain sick of it!
Every time I start up iTunes it does the "Determining Gapless Playback" thing, but when it gets to certain songs it freezes up and I get an error message that says:
"iTunes has encountered an error and needs to close"
This happenes to a lot of songs (a few dozen)and the only way I can actually access my library is by hitting the 'x'next to "Determining Gapless Playback" before it gets to the songs. However, now I can't even do that because it gets to the song immediately.
I need to know if I can disable the gapless playback or somehow debug this (I have reinstalled iTunes, Quicktime works, I have reloaded my library, done a system restore, and changed users/startup programs... nothing works)
    PLEASE help!
I run XP if that helps.

    Kar,
Check out the steps Roy B posted in this thread. They are long and a bit convoluted, but they seem to have done the trick for many others having this problem.

  • "iTunes has encountered an error and needs to close" - can't open iTunes

    Hi guys,
I'm a huge Apple fan so I obviously decided to upgrade to Apple 7.0.1 the day it came out... installed it. Opened it up, but within just a few seconds i got a Windows message saying
"iTunes has encountered an error and needs to close"
I reinstalled it and still have the same problem.
First few days I could atleast keep iTunes open for a few minutes before the message, but now its down to just a few seconds.
I run Windows XP if that helps any.
Please help me fix this problem or tell me how I can put iTunes 6 back on my computer --- I need my music!
    Thanks

After downloading and installing 7.0.1 my iTunes would not open either. Even worse is you can't go back to v6 if you had v7 running--the database is updated.
Luckily I was able to get my iTunes to open again by doing the following:
    Click Start/Run
    Type in "%userprofile%\application data\apple computer"
Right click on the iTunes folder and rename it to iTunes.bak.
    Close the window.
    Click Start/Run again.
    Type in "%userprofile%\local settings\application data\apple computer"
Right click on the iTunes folder and rename it to iTunes.bak.
    Close the window.
Try opening your iTunes again. It may re-ask some general setup questions, but mine opened without the error, and it still had all my music. However, I did have to re-authorize my computer.
I used to never be leary about updating iTunes... guess Apple's software ain't no peach, either.
    Hope this helps someone.
