Error reading aspect ratio? Encore CS3

Hi
I have a small problem. I have a DVD project I want to make in 16:9. I import DV AVI's as assets. If I import DV AVI's made in PPRO I have no problem with them being widescreen, but if the files come from Sony Vegas or Canopus Edius, they are seen in encore as 4:3.
I have a workarround, where I import them in PPRO and export them agai, and it works, but it's a bid too much if the problem could be solved.
Thanks.

But of course Ruud! :-)
Thanks a lot for your help - saved me a lot of extra work.

  • PGC error when burning in Encore CS3 ... help

I've looked and can not find any one else with exactly this problem. I recently upgraded to Adobe Creative Suite 3 and can not get a DVD to burn. The project checks fine, the files transcode without difficulty but during the burning process, I very quickly get a PGC "file name" error.
I have a Sony Pentium 4, 2 GHz, with 1.21 G of RAM, and plenty (30 G) free on my hard drive. I have a 16X Memorex DVD burner which is probably 6 months old, but up until now has worked great. I've tried several different brands of DVD-R media and same problem.
I'd describe myself as an advanced amateur at video making. I taught myself on Nova's Video Explosion and burned 100's of dvd's on the Sonic's My DVD program over the past 5 years. Actually that system worked well, but I'd outgrown it. I downloaded Encore 2.0 free 30 day trial and loved it. I'd import (uncompressed) avi files that I'd created in other programs (mostly Video Explosion, but also Movie Shaker, and Windows Movie Maker), create menus in PS CS2 and my DVD's burned quickly and without errors at all. When my 30 days expired, I found they no longer offered 2.0 and I decided to spend the big bucks at got Creative Suite 3 really solely for Encore.
I've now spent 3 days trying all kinds of different things, many different files from different sources and I always get the same error message of "PGC "file name" has an error at "time" internal software error %0, line "file name:, time 00:"time", ref= BPGC.
I did read some messages on here about uncompressed avi vs. compressed avi. I did find that I was using uncompressed avi, but when I used Adobe premiere and rendered as MPEG 2 ( I believe), I got the same error. The only success (?) I had was when I rendered a file as a .MOV. It did burn without the dreaded error message, but the quality was extremely poor and jumpy.
Any ideas? I've got a project due in a couple of days and at present I've got files that I can't get to DVD...

So, finally I've found the source of the problem and a workaround!
    First the source:
when Encore has to transcode a video it must corrupt the file, because it's the transcoded file that causes the problem, I tried this by importing a transcoded file into Encore 1.5 there it came with the same error.
Now the workaround, ok maybe it isn't quite a workaround but it's a way to go:
What I did was: I built my project new in Encore 1.5, because Encore 2.0 has a problem importing the videos by me, but if you would just import the videos in 1.5 and let 1.5 transcode them so that all of them would fit on a DVD you should be able to import the transcoded files in CS3 and it should work, no guarantee.
Other possibility: try opening your project in encore 2.0 and re import your videos there and let 2.0 do all of the transcoding, that might work too!
But for certain: don't let encore CS3 do all the transcoding!
I'm working with PAL files I don't know if it will be the same by NTSC, but it's worth a try!
If anybody feels like reproducing the bug, here is the way to do it:
Make a project in Encore CS3 and import Videos encoded by premiere as MPG2-DVD (I think: .m2v .wav) and set the transcoding options to automatic, encore should have to transcode the files. Then let encore make the DVD, at some point you should get that nice PGC error!

Oops - mea cupla - it's stated clearly in your original post.
    Sorry.
Okay - let me try & undserstand your flow here.
Are you are re-using assets or have you imported them several times under different names?
If the former, this might be the trouble.
If using the same background each time for each of thre 4 menus, what happens if you import the footage 4 times with 4 different names?
    So, instead of
movie clip.avi (is that a space I see in the filename?? more on that in a moment)
    you would use
    movie_clip_1.avi
    movie_clip_2.avi
    movie_clip_3.avi
    movie_clip_4.avi
and do the same for the audio too.
I have often had terrible trouble with another Sonic tool where the importers allow you to link the same asset multiple times, yet when you compile it all goes to hell in a handcart.
Workaround = never use the same asset more than once unless you change the name.
I would also rename each copy of the menu as well, just to be safe.
The other thing - not that this is the problem for you - is to try & avoid using spaces in a filename. Always use an underscore instead of a space.
    I hope this helps.

  • The aspect ratio of this file is  not support by DVD. Possible slideshow error?

    hello everyone,
I will try to give as much information as possible.  Dont scream at me if i forget anything.  For starters, I just learned how to use Adobe Encore CS4.  I taught my self between reading the  help files and videos I found on the web.   I am an amateur when it comes to DVD authoring (could have alot to do with my problem).  Im an animator and I am making a DVD to show my demo reel, drawings, and i have a storyboard to final comparison video.  I designed all of my menus in photoshop.  I have one transition that was animated in after effects that was imported using dynamic link.  My demo reel is a mov file at 640x360 widescreen, half the size of HD 720p.  The comparison video is a premiere file from dynamic link (same size as the demo reel). There is some background music for the menus. Then I have 3 slideshows, and i believe this is where the error is coming from.  Most of the artwork has the same dimensions but there are some that are larger or smaller.  Some are jpg, but most are PSD files.  The slide show is set to manual advance with music in the background. I have no transition effects on the slideshow.  When building the DVD, i believe when it says "starting project" after all the importing was done,i get the error
The aspect ratio of this file is  not support by DVD. PGC info: name= Figure Drawing (name of the slideshow and a menu button) ref=Fpgc, time=234.2340s
I just tried to build the DVD without the slideshow and I still get the error. Possibly a menu issue? I have no idea. Ive ran into errors before but I was able to get through the others.  I just cant seem to find a solution to this error. Even after searching the forums for similar problems. Hopefully, the solution is simple. If more info is needed let me know.  I really need this DVD to send out for jobs!! Thanks everyone.
    Brandon

When doing SlideShows, whether in Encore (somewhat limited), or in PrPro, it is always better to re-size outside of these programs, prior to Import. I use Photoshop (PS) to do this, and use an Action to get everything in the proper Mode, Color Space, Size - everything. I always do a Save_As and use .PSD files. I also Save a working version, incase I have Flattened, etc., for Import into the NLE/authoring app.
JPEG's *should* work fine too, though there is the JPEG compression to deal with. Might not be an issue, but for max quality, I start with RAW images, process to .PSD's, and then work from copies of these, to get my still Assets ready for PrPro, or En.
I either size exactly to my Project Preset, or to exactly what I need, if say I will pan across a zoomed out image. In a major Project, I may have sub-folders with 4 different sizes of image - based precisely on what I will need to do with that/those image(s). If I will not need to do any animation on any images, then I use that Project Preset (including the correct PAR) and they work perfectly. This also eliminates any unnecessary overhead on the system.
    Good luck,

  • MENU ASPECT RATIO ERROR UPON BIULD

    All,
I wondered if anyone may be able to help... I've been constructing my company's showreel DVD using ENCORE over the last few weeks, encountering a mixed variety of unpredictable bugs along the way. Just when I thought I'd cracked the project, I've started to encounter a very troubling error that prevents me from build a finished DVD.
Upon Building, i continuously get the following message attached to a variety of different menu file names:
PGC "menu file name" has an error at 0.000s. The aspect ratio of this file is not supported by DVD. -PGC Info: name = GGN_MENU_FORD_story.ref= EBpgc, time = 0.000s
I presumed that this was relating back to the pixel aspect ratio of the menus upon creating in Photoshop, but the frustrating thing is that i haven't changed these ratios from successful builds on earlier versions of the disk. I'm loathed to start unpicking the project...
    Any ideas? Thanks,
    Will

Tell me about the menu that is erroring - its aspect ratio, is it a motion menu, etc.

  • Pixel Aspect Ratio Discrepancy

My first project after being upgraded to CS4 (with Matrox Axio) was supposed to be very simple and wasn't.  A :10 sponsorship billboard with animated background we always use (avi), client supplied logo (tga), and announcer audio track (wav).  Set up the project/sequence to be D1/DV 0.9, just like always.  Targa file was also 0.9.  So far everything is normal.  Then rep decides they want a plain blue background instead of the animated one, and would like to add a phone super.  Made a solid blue background in the title generator, again 0.9, and when I put it on the timeline, I could no longer see video.  Even if I dbl clicked on it, I couldn't see either background or logo in the source monitor.  In case the title generator didn't like making a color solid, I re-made the graphic in Photoshop, again 0.9 tga, created a new project from scratch, imported my sources and when I put the background on the bottom track, again I couldn't see any video.  I changed the pixel aspect ratio of the tga background to square pixels, put it on the timeline and that worked.  I could see the logo again.  So I made the phone super in the title generator and thought okay...square pixels.  Brought the title graphic onto the timeline, and couldn't see any video.  Changed the title graphic back to 0.9, brought it back onto the timeline, and it worked.  So I had a background targa graphic in square pixels, a logo targa graphic in 0.9 and a title graphic in 0.9.  One more thing that was a new experience for  me was that a box popped up that said I needed to scrub through the sequence before it would play in real time.  So I did, and it played.  Can anyone share with me some logic to this discrepancy?  Thanks.

I wonder if this has anything to do with the fact that Adobe changed the PAL pixel aspect ratio from CS3 to CS4?
I've fallen foul of this a couple of time.

Although they're mostly talking about After Effects, this applies equally to Premiere CS4.

  • CS3 Encore and Aspect Ratio

    Hi,
I am trying to close caption an MP4 file in CS3 Encore for DVD output.  I Alt clicked the video track and browsed to the .scc caption files in the properties tab.  I had the aspect ratio of SD NTSC Widescreen (1.2) on the video, but when we view the DVD it's squished into 4:3 and doesn't display correctly.

  • Internal Software error PGC  for encore CS3 !!! solved  !!!

Almost everybody here knows the next error:
PGC "timeline name" has an error at xx:xx:xx:xy internal software error : %0, line timeline name - PGCINFO: name= timeline name, ref=BPGC, time=xx:xx:xx:xy
Where the y in time stands for the length of the timeline minus 2 frames. The BPGC error can also be FPGC or DPGC dependant on how many menu's there are in the project.
It kept me awake for weeks and after reading this forum several times and comparing encore CS3 with encore 2.0 filenames I found the solution.
This Error is a bug in encore witch has nothing to do with blank filename spots and sonic coding or codecs or planning your workflow with a pencil but pure with the combination Adobe Premiere Pro CS3 and Encore CS3.
This is what generates the problem:
In Adobe Premiere Pro CS3 you build project with video, sound and chapters. Then you export the project via the Media Encoder not Multplexed.
Premiere CS3 then creates the following files:
    filename.M2V (video file mpg)
    filename.AC3 (audio file ac3)
filename.M2V.XMPSES (an adobe file with preview info and chapter pointers)
    filname.XMP (??)
It is the .M2V.XMPSES file witch creates the PGC error. If you use the MULTIPLEX DVD option then ADOBE will not create the .M2V.XMPSES file so there will not be an error. This trick mentioned by ADOBE and many others is just to go around the bug instead of solving it. Also with multiplex you have just one sound track. I use two sound tracks like 5.1 and a 2.0 track witch you can choose in a menu.
Some people say it is the blank spots. Also not true. They have probably just erased the blank spots of the M2V file and forgot the .M2V.XMPSES file.
When you just delete the .M2V.XMPSES file and then open the M2V and AC3 file in Encore as a new asset, make a timeline and menu's and the project will built and burn. Only if you delete this .M2V.XMPSES file Encore takes a longer time to import the M2V file and will be without the chapter points.
Almost everything else will work like menu with sound and even a movie background (use M2V files). Only the motion buttons in a menu still wont work unless you use a black background !?!. Haven't figured this out yet. Only solution for this is use Encore 2.0. In this older version also the motion buttons will work without error's (everything else also so why buy CS3??)
Here is what you must do create a DVD without errors:
-Create a project in Premiere Pro, even with chapters.
-Write down all chapter points (minutes:seconds:frames)
-Create two new unique maps in explorer for example D:DVD1 and D:DVD2
-Export in Premiere with Media Encoder without the Multiplex:DVD but with NON to the D:DVD1 map
-Copy from D:DVD1 only the M2V and AC3 files to D:DVD2
-Start up Encore DVD CS3 or 2.0
-Create a new unique project in Encore for example "DVD" and save this in the map D:DVD2\
-Then use Save-as (under file) and pinpoint to D:DVD2\dvd to be sure that all Encore's files are placed in this folder.
-Select M2V file and make new timeline.
-Make chapter points (you wrote down the points, did you?)
-Create menu's, even with sound (AC3) and movie background (M2V)
-Then render project if you have used a video for menu background
    -Finally Built and burnnnnnn!!
-If you like to use motion buttons in a menu then use Encore 2.0
I have double checked my work flow and it really works. I have built a project and burned with success Then I deleted the timeline and the M2V file. Copied the .M2V.XMPSES file in the used folder. Re loaded the M2V file in encore (this time much faster! and with chapter points). Tried to built and burn and back was the error. Also this happened in in Encore 2.0!!
Hope that this will solve the PGC error once and for all !!!

    > Where the y in time stands for the length of the timeline minus 2 frames.
This can actually vary, and so far at least, I don't think we've seen a pattern as to type of pgc error based on how many frames from the end it reports.
    > The BPGC error can also be FPGC or DPGC dependant on how many menu's there are in the project.
Number of menus is not relevant; the iteration of the first letter is more related to subsequent occurrences of the error. In my current tests it did not always update; they may have been too similar.
    > This is what generates the problem...
Well, the problem does not occur every time you do what you describe, any more than it occurs every time spaces are left in the file names. What you have is, as some other suggestions, a workaround. Thats not bad, and I wonder if you are onto something as to what is contributing to the problem.
So, on to the interesting part whether the xmpses file, or at least what Encore is doing with it, is contributing something. I took an old test project that throws the PGC error and did some experiments.
Background. I am a user who does get the pgc errors regularly, but not always. Creative Suite Production Premium, with PPro CS3 3.2.0 (374) and Encore 3.0.1.008. Pentium 4 2.8GHz 2G RAM, XP SP3, Multiple drives, Nvidia GEforce4 MX440 i.e. an older system. I have lots of stuff loaded and running, including virus protection and firewall, so there are any number of potential conflicts. But I get no crashes, and only one problem other than the pgc. (PPro and Encore monitor windows do this diagonal thing I suspect the display card, but the drivers are up to date. Maxing and then back to fit fixes it.)
If you want to attempt to replicate my studies, here is a link to my problem clip and the first Encore project I describe.
    http://www.videoandcomputer.com/test/pgc_test.htm
This project involves a very short AVI export from PPro CS3 - just over 8 seconds - called pgcbad_clip1.avi. Just to answer any question, the source is dv camera capture, and the source and avi export I use are dv avi type 2. There were no effects added on the timeline.
Test 1: Create a project in Encore CS3. Use the sunset menu and delete all the buttons except "play all." Import the avi as a timeline. Set the timeline end action as "return to last menu" and set the button link to the timeline. Auto transcode. (Project settings are 8mbps max and a3c.) Check project shows okay; there is never a problem with that. Build to a DVD folder in a new folder. This project throws the pgc error.
Test 2: Now create a new Encore project in a new folder. Use the same process, except import as timeline the m2v and a3c files from the first run. (I.e. if the clip is pgcbad_clip1.avi, in the test1 project folders, there is a folder called pgcbad_clip1.avi that has 6 files.) Note that in the folder they are imported from is an xmpses file from the first project's encore transcode. The build again fails with the pgc error - same frame, etc, but I really think the frame number doesn't matter.
Test 3: Now create another new Encore project in a new folder. Use same process, but before importing the m2v and a3c as timeline, delete the xmpses file. Drumroll...... Build succeeds!
    Go figure.
This is not the repeatable bug option weve been looking for, but based on a clip that always fails, it does demonstrate the odd event of deleting the xmpses file as a workaround. I wonder if that will give adobe something to work with.
Can anyone else get my clip to work/not work in a straight project?
Test 4: Just to answer the question since the avi file fails here, will the elemental option succeed? I exported elemental m2v and wav from PPro, used the same project process, and transcoded the wav. That build also works! I have seen this work both ways. I have had projects where the elemental failed, and an avi export worked. I do believe the elemental options work more consistently. But my project that I completed yesterday used all avi exports, animated buttons in the submenu, - no pgc error.

  • 6.0.2 reading pixel aspect ratio wrong

Hey, I'm wondering if this is a bug or just my user error. Here's the scoop. I have a ProRes HQ master that is 1920 x 1080p. When I open it in QT 7 or 10 or VLC it shows the proper aspect ratio. When I open it in Compressor it shows it is square pixels, so 1.00 as it should be. However when I create a project that matches the file in Premiere 6.0.2 and import it appears quite stretched. If I right click and get properties Premiere sees it as 1.333. If I right click and tell Premiere to create a sequence that matches the file it has the same stretched look before/after I drop it into the sequence. Any thoughts?
    OSX Lion, CS6 w/latest updates

It happens sometimes.  That's why Adobe provided a method to correct it.  Right click on the clip in the bin and go to Modify>Interpret Footage...  There you can set the PAR back to 1.0.

  • Aspect Ratio in Premiere Pro CS3

I have imported a Quicktime movie (a desktop recording of a software created using SnapZ Pro) which was recorded in SnapZ Pro with frame dimensions of 720 x 480 pixels. When I import this quicktime movie file into my Premiere Pro CS3 project, the settings for which is a frame size of 720 x 480, it looks distorted in both the source and program windows. If both the imported file, and the project settings match dimensions, shouldn't the imported file view properly?
    Any help appreciated.

Maybe the SnapZ Pro captured video has a PAR (Pixel Aspect Ratio) of 1 instead of 0.9 which it would be for standard NTSC DV.
The solution depends on what you are planning to do with your movie:
If it only has to play on a computer you could import the footage in a custom project (Desktop) where you would set the PAR to 1.
If you plan to output to DV tape or burn a DVD you could resize the video to 640x480 inside a 720x480 frame. That would leave black "pillars" on both sides.
Or you could re-capture at 720x480 with a 0.9 PAR (if SnapZ Pro offers that option). Should the software lack a PAR setting you could instead capture at 720x534.

  • Encore CS3 - Out of Memory & C++ Runtime Error

I'm running Encore CS3 and I encounter several problems with a recent project that have made Encore practically useless.
When I try to preview the project, play a timeline or preview a menu I get this error. Out of Memory - Please Save and exit immediately to avoid data loss. I also get the c++ runtime error sometimes while trying the same actions.
I've also had Encore hang while trying to import .m2v files, although this appears to happen randomly. Clearing the media cache seams to fix it, sometimes.
All video was compressed with Cinemacraft Encoder 2.70.02.12 and all audio was normalized with Adobe Audition CS3.
I've read through the forms and tried deleting the media cache in the registry and re-installed Encore once. Nothing appears to work, I'm about ready to ditch Encore and go with another authoring program.
    Please help.

Why would XP64 be the problem if its worked fine for over 30 projects?
I also tried loading the project on one of our 32bit XP workstations with Encore CS3 and had all the same problems.
At this point the problem appears to be a bug with Encore, because after starting over from scratch I got the project to work fine.
It also appears that if you copy/paste anything it will corrupt your project somehow.
So, the bottom line its this, XP64 is not the problem.

I've had trouble also making a slideshow using Premier CS3 or Encore.
I've taken the M2V file made with CS3 and reencoded it on Premier Pro 2. With this new file Encore CS3 will burn a DVD.
I beleive that Encore CS3 has a problem with the Meada Encorder for CS3 because if I reencoded the CS3 M2V file using Premier CS3 I still get the PGC error in Encore CS3.
I've has also noted that when using Encore CS3 for a slideshow with a large number of large photos files, that when zoom and pam or Default Transition are selected Encore hangs up for long time with no indication that any operation is taking place. After this long time control is return to the operator. Beleive that Slideshow is processing the requested selections but it would be nice to know that this is going on and the program is working.
Adobe has done a very poor job of beta testing Encore CS3!

  • Encore CS3 error, won't build DVD?!

I've created a basic menu in Encore CS3 with two buttons and two separate timelines.  I've checked and previewed my project several times and everything works OK.  However, whne I try and build a DVD disk, I get this error message: "PGS "file name" has an error at 3;29;14 (the very end of the video clip)  Internal software error: %0. line (my file name). PGC info: name= "my file name" ref= EPGC.time=00;3;29;14.
I rendered this video clip out of After Effects CS3 as an mpeg2 file. Have tried re-rendering out of a new After Effects project and result is the same. Have also tried different disks, same result.
The second clip in the Encore project works fine; it was captured the same way in the same format.  Both timelines play fine whne previewed in Encore and all links and buttons fiunction perfectly.
What does this error mean and how do I correct the problem?
    Thanks!

Some of us experience this pgc error (only in CS3) and have found no real solution.  There are a variety of workarounds.  I believe the most persistent version is the result of some unidentified combination of hardware and software.
One qualifier: I'm not sure that any of us that reported had exported the timeline file from AE.  I don't see that it shojl dmatter, but I'd consider the possibility that it is an actual asset error.
I believe that there are 3 variations, and they may have different implications: timelines (your issue), motion menus, and slide shows.
Copies of projects and assets taken to a machine/user who does not experience the error work fine.  Some users have done a ridiculous amount of testing (I'm one), and some have declared a solution (I am not one, and believe there are probably multiple causes).  Since CS4 is out, I doubt we will ever see any further resolution, and, since the problem can not be reliably repeated in a new project with new assets, no "bug" was ever demonstrated.
The first rule is to use flawless workflow.  (I'm copying this from notes on a previous post, and I still don't find a link right off to Neil Wilkes' and Jeff Bellune's descriptions, but one example is never changing assets with Encore closed.)  But I have instances in which I was perfect (ha, ha), and the error occurred.
In most instances, one or more workarounds can be used.  If you used a muxed file, do it again with demuxed.  If you used files that were in the same folder as the xmpses files (the files premiere creates to carry project/chapter info), delete the files other than the m2v and wav and reimport the asset as a timeline. (You will have to redo the chapter markers.  It is best to delete the old file from the project, and have the newly imported file renamed.  However, I have done it various ways successfully.)  If you have long file names with spaces, shorten and remove the spaces.

  • Aspect ratio error new chapter

    Hello,
I do not seem to be able to solve the aspect ratio error that has so many threads all over the web.
I checked the menu, tried several own made menus and templates, so this is not the cause. The only timeline is an MPEG2 (half an our) from Squeeze (usually no problems). Everything is set on 16:9.  So what could I miss here?
    Thanks,
    Rob
The message states that there is an error in the movie at 5.3200 s.
The aspect Ratio is not supported by DVD.
Updated: problem solved. There was something wrong with an audio file. Don't know what. Just exported again from Avid.

That is the resolution. What PAR are you using? It should be 0,9 for 4:3 projects, assuming NTSC.
