    Exclude your iTunes folder from your antivirus program.
    For me it is NOD32, and whenever I re-install or upgrade I have to do this, otherwise the annoying "saving itunes library" error pops up on exit...
    If you haven't done anything to the antivirus program, maybe you renamed your folder or the location where the iTunes folder is located and you have to change that in the antivirus program as well...
    This worked for me... Hope it helps you out!

  • I upgraded my OS in my Mac and now I cab't open iTunes. Error message says the iTunes library is locked, in a locked disk or I don't have permission to write.

    I upgraded my OS from Lion to Mountain Lion. After that I can't access or open Itunes anymore. Message says " Itunes library is locked, in a locked disc or I don't have permission to write permission for this file.

    Back up all data. Don't continue unless you're sure you can restore from a backup, even if you're unable to log in.
    This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
    Step 1
    If you have more than one user account, and the one in question is not an administrator account, then temporarily promote it to administrator status in the Users & Groups preference pane. To do that, unlock the preference pane using the credentials of an administrator, check the box marked Allow user to administer this computer, then reboot. You can demote the problem account back to standard status when this step has been completed.

    Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
    ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
    ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
    ☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
    Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
    The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
    Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1 or if it doesn't solve the problem.
    Boot into Recovery. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
    Utilities ▹ Terminal

  • ITunes Library File Locked

    Hi,
    Have been using iTunes 10.5 on my WinXP machine - no problems.  During a movie download tonight, iTunes crashed.  Tried to reopen and got the infamous error "iTunes Library file locked or on a locked disk..."  Tried several remedies listed.
    Verified that MyMusic folder and contents are not READ ONLY.  I am unable to rename, edit, or move the file...she's locked up tight.
    Tried repairing the Windows Registry assignment using the Tweak UI utility discussed in another thread.  No joy.
    Tried starting iTunes from another account on the PC - iTunes boots fine.
    Pulling my hair out (what little is left)...Any ideas out there ???
    HELP !

    Fixed.  For those using WinXP...Here's what I had to do:
    It was a file properties thing as mentioned in other posts, but to change the file properties...
    1.  Boot Windows in SAFE MODE by holding F8 down during bootup
    2.  Log on as Administrator
    3.  Navigate to the iTunes Libary.itl file (My Music/iTunes)
    4.  Right Click and pull up the file properties
    5.  Under Security, re-add the user account to the file permissions
    6.  Then change file permissions to FULL (Read/Write/Edit...)
    7.  Reboot & Viola !
    Once you unlock the write protected status (which got defaulted to the Adminstrator account), iTunes opens just fine.

  • ITunes library is locked or on a locked disk windows 7

    Hi all,
    I recently downloaded some software called Jamcast which allows you to view iTunes / Spotify files on your Xbox360.
    Since then my iTunes has been having problems.
    I have a large number of mp3s on here 110Gb so it's causing me a bit of annoyance.
    I'm getting the error iTunes library is locked or on a locked disk...
    If I hold down shift I can get into iTunes and do the scan for media which brings back all my music but it loses the smart playlists and then when I come out of iTunes and go back into it brings back the same error message again.
    My computer only has two accounts Mark administrator and Guest so I doubt it is a permissions error.
    Also I seem to have far too many folders in my iTunes folder in my Windows 7 library.
    I have
    iTunes
    subfolders
    iTunes Media
    Previous iTunes Libraries
    Mobile Applications
    iTunes Music
    iTunes Plug-ins
    iPod Games
    Album Artworks
    iTunes1
    subfolders
    iTunes Media
    Album Artwork
    and
    Playlists
    Recorded Radio
    License Backup
    iPod
    and my iTunes library fles I have
    iTunes Library.itl
    iTunes Music Library.xml
    itunesPrefs (2).xml
    iTunesPrefs.xml
    sentinel (2)
    iTunes Library.xml
    iTunes LibraryBackup.itl
    iTunes Library Extras (2).itdb
    iTunes Library Genius (2).itdb
    iTunes Library (3).itl
    iTunes Library (2).xml
    iTunes LIbrary (2) Extras.itdb
    iTunes Library (2) Genius.itdb
    iTunes Library (2).itl
    iTunes Library Extras.itdb
    itunes Library Genius.itdb
    sentinel
    A lot of the itl and itdb files seem to have a sort of locked icon on them.
    Please could you let me know what the xml files and itl files do in iTunes thanks.

    Copy the following (bold text) into a new document in Notepad (Don't use Word or Wordpad - they add formatting and it won't work)

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shell\runas]
    @="Take Ownership"
    "NoWorkingDirectory"=""

    "IsolatedCommand"="cmd.exe /c takeown /f \"%1\" /r /d y && icacls \"%1\" /grant administrators:F /t"
    Save it under "All file types" as "ownit.reg". Save it to your desktop.
    Double Click it and click OK when prompted. You will now be able to take ownership of ANY file on your sytem with just a right click.

  • ITunes Library.itl locked?

    Hi All,
    i have recently moved from windows to mac and was wondering if someone could help me out please.
    i currently have my iTunes library stored on an external hard drive as i prefer to keep the memory free on my laptops.
    I'm trying to choose the iTunes library on the macbook from the external hard drive but i keep getting and error "the iTunes library.il file is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have write permission for this file."
    anyone know what i can do?

    This is an easy issue to fix, and it should only take you half a minute or so. Read all these east steps all the way through first before you begin.
    1) Connect your external hard drive to your MacBook Pro. Make sure the drive appears on your desktop;
    2) Right-click on that external drive;
    3) Select "get Info." A new window will appear;
    4) Look towards the bottom of the new window, and twirl open the "Sharing & Permissions" tab. It might already be open;
    5) Select your "Name," which is in the left side of the box near the bottom. If you don't see your name in the left-hand box, add it before this step 5 by using the big "+" symbol below the "Name" box, then complete this step 5;
    6) Change your "Permissions" to be "Read & Write";
    6) Select the drop down arrow to the right of the "Gear" (which is near the bottom of the window to the right of the big "+" and "-" symbols),
    and now select "Apply to all enclosed items."
    Sometimes you will have to allow changes to your system, depending on how your computer is setup. If you cannot change your "Name" or "Privilege," you simply have to "unlock" your ability to make these changes. To unlock your computer to make the changes above, do the following:
    1) Click on the lock in the lower right hand corner of the new window, (which will be in the "locked" position) and enter your username and password that you set up on your mac. It's the same one that you use to install software, etc.;
    2) Start at step 5 above and complete the steps;
    3) Click the lock to prevent unauthorized changes to your mac.
    By following the steps above, you should be able to access your iTunes library.

  • I can't open itunes when I click onn the icon the message I get is "error new itunes library"

    I can't open itunes..when I click on the icon on my desk top I get the message" error new itunes library". I have windows 7.

    Hi beachy85!
    When you remove iTunes, your music on your computer (and your iPod, too) will be saved.
    Let's try this:
    Go to "Add or remove programs" in Control Panel.
    Find iTunes and QuickTime from this list, and remove them both.
    Then, download the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility to remove the remainging installation files.
    For information on the WICU, see this:
    Description of the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility
    Then, go to this page, and QuickTime (get the Standalone version, not the one that includes iTunes in the pack):
    QuickTime download
    Then, install iTunes from this page here:
    Download iTunes - 7.1.1.5
    After you've done that, restart your computer.
    Now, try opening iTunes again. Do you still get that error message, or not?

  • Itunes won't open 'error: new itunes library'

    My itunes was playing up.
    Not recognising my iphone 4s.
    It then told me I had to install the new itunes to make m iphone compatible with the computer.
    I did so and now the itunes will not open saying "Error: New Itunes Library' WHY?!? This is really frustrating me!!
    Thanks.

    georgiamomma -
    There are a few things you could try,but what worked for me was to download a fresh installation file from apple.
    Your update got corrupted somehow. Doing the usual of going to control panel, clicking on Programs and Features, clicking on iTunes in the list and selecting REPAIR probably won't fix this issue, as sometimes repair reverts the installation to its previous version and then your iTunes Library.itl file can't open because it's from a newer version than the one REPAIR reinstalled. You can try that process, but I doubt it will work.
    Do not change any files and/or their existing locations. Also, do not uninstall iTunes from your machine. Simply go to Apple's web site and download their latest version suitable for your particular computer. Once downloaded, double click the installer and follow the prompts. You should be able to launch itunes afterward, and your library will magically re-appear.
    Again, DO NOT uninstall the old version, and do not rename, remove and/or replace any of the original files prior to installing the latest version over what's already on your machine. Good luck!

  • Pc says error new itunes library?

    PC says Error New Itunes Library??

    This approach may help...
    Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
    Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
    See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
    When you get it all working make a backup!
    If not try a repair install of iTunes, or uninstalling and then reinstalling.

  • My mac air want shut down, had to force shut after computer freezing in itunes, box with saving itunes library has been up for 30 mins

    I have had a day of it. wanted to join my new pc computer to my itune account. one problem to many devices on my account and two are ones that got broken and couldn't be deauthrise. sooo i deauthrised all computers. my mac air was sitting beside me so i thought i will authrise it again, was that a mistake as my computer became very slow when i went into itunes. it froze and not in the spinning disc way, in the was doing nothing way. held power button in, after waiting 10 mins and it went to gray screen with itune boxs saying "saving itunes library". its been doing this over 30 mins now and will not shut down or anything esle because when i try power button again it says i have not logged out of itune and should do this before it can shut down. not happy!!!! this is after 2 hours prior apple tried very hard sale to get me to buy there tech support for £100. I have never had a problem before, doesn't that seem strange?

    shelbell508 wrote:
    I tried to run the disk utility and it wouldn't run properly
    Exactly what did you do to run Disk Utility and exactly what happened up to the freeze?
    I called some place to ask for advice and they said it could be my logic board???
    That's an easy answer to give but not necessarily the correct one.
    If you have the system restore disc that came with your Mac, boot with that disc in the Mac while holding down the "D" key. That will invoke hardware diagnostics. Run those several times to investigate the possibility that your Mac has a hardware flaw.

  • I can't open my iTunes "Error: New iTunes Library" help =(

    Starting today, I can not open my iTunes library. Every time I try to open it, a error message shows up saying "Error: New iTunes Library". I don't know how to fix it. I've tried restarting my computer, taking the battery out, uninstalling iTunes (I couldn't uninstall it either! It wouldn't let me), and deleting the recent library change. Nothing has worked. I need help on how to fix it and what the error means please!

    Try removing the Genius database.  In the "Finder" go to the /username/Music/iTunes/ folder and delete the "iTunes Library Genius.itdb" file. This may allow the program to launch again. This file will be recreated upon first use of the "Genius" feature.

  • 'Saving iTunes Library" Message

    for the last few months my home computer's (Windows XP Pro SP2) iTunes displays this message 'Saving iTunes Library" and takes 10 to 20 seconds to close. Now this never used to occur, and it doesn't occur on any of my laptops or other computers at home nor work. Any idea of why this is occuring and how to stop it?

    Well, I wouldn't dare to call you an idiot
    If you open iTunes and directly afterwards close it again you wouldn't expect to "save" your library 'cause nothing has changed. But even if you import, rename etc., all actions are completed instantly. It would be "bad" programming to occupy system resource for such a long time after exiting a program...
    I agree with you, that it is not a real error message. Probably iTunes way to say, that it can't close because there is still some action going on in the iTunes folder (bij the antivirus program).
    Anyway, I had this message too and only after I excluded the folder from my antivirus program it was gone.
