Error says Firefox is still running no matter what I try

I've looked around a bunch of help articles and threads, and so far I can't seem to get Firefox to stop showing me this error.
I get it every so often, not every time. I can't seem to pin down any consistent factor that would cause this. So far I've tried a fresh install (I deleted everything FIrefox from my hard drive before reinstalling), ending the process, checking the default folder access rights and deleting the parent.lock file. Even after all those things, it's still giving me the error every so often, maybe one out of every three times I try to start it up.
This isn't a huge internet-breaking problem but it's still really frustrating. Is there anything else I can try?
Thanks!

A possible reported cause is using "Clear history when Firefox closes" to clear the browsing history, so if you use this then try to exclude the history.
In a few days (Tuesday) Firefox 30 will be released that has a fix for some of the causes, so can have a lot at that new version.

  • After closing firefox, if I decide to go back online it says firefox is still running. I have all windows closed. I have to restart my computer before it will let me go online again.

If I go offline and later decide to go back online the error message says the firefox is still running even though all windows are closed.

*Wait a bit longer before reopening Firefox to give Firefox more time to close completely.
*Use "Firefox/File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit") to close Firefox if you are currently doing that by clicking the close X on the title bar.

  • Once I close all windows and try to open another I get a message saying"Firefox is still running, you must close all browers before opening a new window. Why is this happening? I have the 3.5.10 Version

I close all Firefox windows. When I try to open another window later I get a message telling me that Firefox is still running and that I need to close all windows or restart my computer. I have this about 3 times a day this past week but prior to that it was maybe every one or 2 weeks. I had the 3.5.10 Version of Firefox, but have just updated to see if this stops this from happening. But what do I do if it doesn't stop it?

There are a few possible causes for that error, for details see [[Firefox is already running but is not responding]]

  • I get an error message saying firefox is still running ut even after I reboot, same thing happens

Firefox is already running, but is not responding. To open a new window, you must first close the existing Firefox process, or restart your system.

    Probably a "hung" firefox.exe process.

  • After exiting a pop up says firefox is still running and I cannot reaccess it. Any ideas on how to fix this?

Since this is an XP machine, which version of iTunes do you have installed?  Is it the latest version?
Have you tried starting iTunes, attach the USB end of the cable, then while holding the home button on the iPod connect the 30-pin connector end of the cable to the iPod...that is the recovery mode but also should make iTunes see the iPod.
If that doesn't work you may need to take the iPod back and have it tested by the genius bar techs to make sure the connector is not bad.

  • My computer keeps saying firefox is still running after I have closed it and then I have to restart my computer to use the internet again. What's the problem? Also, I cannot print my emails.

Why do I need to restart my computer every time I've closed the internet and try to reopen firefox?

Yep tried that and it would not stop. I tried running portable Firefox and couldn't, no surprise as it is already running. I had to reboot my PC. You may think that acceptable. When it takes 15 minutes and you don't normally turn off your machine as it needed on then it's a bigger deal.
I ran the portable version again as V5 is crap, basically and there is nowhere to find version 4!!! Thanks for that Mozilla.
It tells me that Firefox is running. I did manage to kill that version at least but why or how is FireFox running after a reboot and using 62 Mb when doing nothing to boot.
Firefox 5 is really slow at remembering URL's when typed in the whole app slows right down and it take 10-15 sec to come up with the same as V4 did straight away. I have to admit my PC in the office does not behave this way with version 5 but this is the real world.

  • Firefox won.t start up browser when my meta 4 is on, even when I shut off meta4 It says firefox is still running?

In order to start browser I have to restart my computer. I need to know if there is a way to run both? I had to delete mozilla from my computer so I could run meta4. I'm using chrome now and it works with meta4 on, but I would like firefox back.

What do you mean with ''meta4'' ?
Do you mean the Firefox 4.0 beta version?

  • Firefox says it's still running eventhough I've closed out of a site and will not allow me to open another site. It says "Firefox is still running". I have to completely re-start my computer. It started after I downloaded the newest version.

  • Trying to delete MS Office 2011 and keep getting a mbuinstrument error saying it is still running?

I have a trial version of MS Office 2011 on my MAC (OS version 10.6). I am trying to remove this from my system. I have followed all the instructions from Microsoft to the tee. Now when I go to empty my trash I get the following message "The operation can’t be completed because the item “mbuinstrument” is in use." What do I do? As of right now I stop the removal because I am not sure what this file is. Can someone please tell me what to do here, please?
    Thanks
    Rosie the Riveter

I first encountered this problem too, but after checking through several files of mine I found this file called Microsoft User Identity or something like that within my documents folder. After deleting this I was able to clear my trash.
Pretty much just search your entire computer for any Microsoft office or word related files and delete them.

  • Firefox will not load no matter what I try (safe mode whatever). It only loads if I run it inside Comodo sandbox! How do I get it to run the normal way?

Firefox will not load the normal way (clicking on a link or running it from Run window or even running it in safe mode). It only runs if I dig down to the installed directory, right-click firefox.exe and select "Run inside Comodo Sandbox". I have Comodo Internet Security Suite installed but this does not happen with other programs. Do send in your suggestions. Re-install did not help.

  • How can I open PDF files in Firefox? Nothing works no matter what I try. Other browsers open them fine.

When trying to open PDF file, screen just stays white and no content is seen. Status says "Done". PDF files will open with no problem in internet explorer, safari, and chrome. Nothing in Firefox which is my preferred browser.

I have heard that trying to use Leopard with AppleWorks can cause a corruption of the hard drive. Is this true?
No, not at all. AppleWorks actually runs better in Leopard on both my PPC & Intel Macs than it did in Tiger. I have found AppleWorks to be faster & more stable in Leopard on an Intel than any other system I've used.
I repaired permissions (both before and after installing Leopard) and have also dumped AppleWorks preference file, then restarting all to no avail.
There are more than one AppleWorks preferences to delete. Only deleting the .plist or just the files in the AppleWorks folder in Preferences will not work. They must all be deleted at the same time. Take a look at this user tip, AppleWorks has stopped working correctly.
Deleting the preferences often fixes printing problems. Also, make sure you have the newest driver for your printer from the manufacturer's web site.
I did install Leopard as an update rather than wiping my HD and doing a new install. Should I delete AppleWorks and all associated files and reinstall AppleWorks and reinstall Leopard from scratch?
Possibly. I chose to do erase & install with migrating users & data for all of my Macs. I did try the upgrade with the MacBook Pro & it was a disaster with failure to start up after installing Leopard. I was willing to take the chance because everything on my MacBook Pro is on my desktop Mac.

  • I have Windows 2003 XP and I cannot get Firefox 4 to work, no matter what I try. Suggestions?

When I install FF4, the search bar and Firefox (larger) icon appear above the search box, but there is absolutely no text on the screen whatsover. I can type in an entry, and the text in the search box does appear, but when I click the "go to" arrow or press <Enter> nothing happens. The screen is completely static. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling FF4, to no avail...finally, I found 3.6.13 online and reinstalled it, so I can use this browser, but cannot upgrade to 4.0. I have never had this kind of issue when upgrading FF before.

Try going to Firefox 4 Safe Mode and see if it works http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Safe%20Mode
If it works go here http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Troubleshooting%20extensions%20and%20themes#w_disable-all-extensions
Find the faulty extension, disable it, find a substitute or wait for an upgrade.

  • When I try to open firefox, I get a message that says, "firefox is already running" and to close it or restart my computer when it is NOT running, so I can't get on the internet through firefox. What is wrong?

The information box pops up when I click on my desktop icon for firefox as well as if I try to access it in other ways. I have restarted my computer. I have tried removing firefox and redownloading it. No matter what I do, it still gives me a box saying it is already running, but not responding. When I pull up my taks bar, it is not running! I can't close it as the box suggests because it is not open to do it. I just keep getting a box saying it is already running no matter what I try to do, even though it is not running.

I have tried everything I could to fix this, but some things require actually being on Firefox, and since I cannot get on, I cannot click on the tabs to do it. I have even totally uninstalled firefox, and that has not fixed this. I still get the same message that firefox is running and I need to close it or restart (which I have also tried dozens of times). I have removed things like Java, and that has not helped either. If I cannot even get on line in firefox, how can I fix this. I am not crazy about using internet explorer, but right now, it is my only option. I even tried to start in safe mode, and the same message box pops up!
