Error setting a WDS network

I trying to set a WDS network in the Airport Utility but I always get an error message. I have an Airport Express (named A1) working and connected to the internet and I want to use another Airport Express (named A2) to extend the range of the network. The existing network is named AP.
That's what I'm doing:
1 - I open the Airport Utility and see A1 and A2.
2 - I click the A2 and Continue.
3 - I set the Airport name (A2) and the password, Continue.
4 - Connect to the current network (or something like this, sorry, I'm trying to translate, I'm using the portuguese version). Continue.
5 - Extend the range of the Airport Extreme or Airport Express. Continue.
6 - The systems detects the network in AP. Continue.
7 - Type the password. Ok.
8 - The systems shows the network AP and it's Airport ID. I click it and Continue.
9 - The systems shows "Setting the main network to a new remote WDS". And I got the message: "There was an error setting this Apple wireless device to WDS. Close the Airport Utility and try again."
What's wrong? How can I make it work?
Thanks for the help!

Hi Brunocarlos - I wanted to let you know I was finally able to get my WDS working after setting it up manually as opposed to using Airport Utility to try and set it up. Here is what I did:
1) Perform a hard reset on both AE's by unplugging the unit, depressing the reset button (near the audio out jack), and plugging it back in while holding the reset button. After about five seconds you will see the lights flash green three times and then it is reset.
2) Use Airport Utility to configure your main AE that is connected to the internet and make sure and click the "manual setup" button on the bottom left of the AU window.
3) When in the setup screen for the AE, click on the "wireless" tab and make sure to select "participate in a WDS" from the drop down. You will see a WDS tab appear.
4) Click on the WDS tab and select "main" from the drop down menu. It will then ask you to input the MAC ID of the remote base station. If you use your mouse/trackpack and mouse over the icon for your second AE base station, you will see a yellow window pop up with the MAC ID of the other base station. Copy this Mac ID into the field listed under that WDS tab.
5) Change whatever other settings you want in the other tabs to include your wireless network name, security features, etc.
6) Once completed click the "update" button to update the features for this "main" base Station.
7) Once update is complete, run the same procedure for the second AE base station. Click the base Station in the AU window, click the "manual settings" tab.
8) Go back to the "wireless" tab and selection the "participate in a wds" from the drop down. Then click on the WDS tab and select "remote" from the drop down as this second AE will be your remote base station.
9) It will bring up a box where you will need to input the MAC ID for the "main" base Station. Again, if you mouse over the icon for the main base Station in the main AU window, you should get a box with the MAC ID.
10) *IMPORTANT* Once you put in the MAC ID, go ahead and update the other tabs as necessary. It is VERY IMPORTANT though to make sure that all of the settings for this "remote" AE are the same as the "main" Station. Make sure that the remote unit is on the same channel. Also make sure that you select the same wireless security type and the same information for the wireless network that you used under the "main" AE. So, the name of the network should be the same, as well as security, password, etc. You can name this AE whatever you want, but just make sure that all of the other configuration features, especially the information on the wireless network and password are the same.
11) Once you are sure everything is the same, click "update" and everything should work. Once the "remote" AE restarts, it should appear in your AU main window with a green light/dot under it signifying that it has joined the network and is now part of the WDS.
Sorry if any of this is confusing. If you have any problems, let me know and I can give you my e-mail address and I will send you some screen shots of the process. After a few tries, the most important thing I learned is that you need to make sure that ALL of the settings are the same on your "remote" station as they are on the main station. Also make sure to get those MAC ID's right or else it won't work. Good Luck!

  • Can I set up a WDS network with two main base stations?

I have an AEBS in the main part of the house and a time capsule in the office in the back of the house, currently with one internet connection (it's cable modem) into to the AEBS. I have tried to use relays (two airport expresses) in a WDS to have the internet connection reach the time capsule, but unfortunately the distance is too great and it won't make it.
I can move the internet connection and AEBS into the middle of the house and everything would be fine (one internet connection into the house, no need for relays to reach the time capsule), but this requires rewiring the cable connection and adding a power outlet, which seems like a lot of work.
My other option is to simply have another internet connection hardwired into the office. This would be using the same cable that comes into the house and is split outside. If I go this route--my question is--can I get the time capsule and the AEBS be on the same WDS network (same name, same passwords?), or will I have two separate networks in the house? If it is the former--how do I set it up? Can I have a WDS with two main base stations? Or is there an easier route?
    Thanks the help and advice...

Just run the Ethernet cable from one of the LAN ports on the AEBS to the WAN port on the Time Capsule. Configure the Time Capsule to operate as a bridge.
You do not use WDS when they are wired together.
Then configure the AEBS and Time Capsule to use the same SSID, wireless encryption type/level/password. Have them operate on different channels as far apart as possible.

I am getting an un expected error message when updating the setting to "extend network".  Is there an obvious setting I may be missing?  Cisco router being used.

If you are trying to "extend" using wireless only, you may not be aware that Apple designed the "extend" feature as a proprietary setting to only work with other Apple routers.
It is extremely unlikely that this will work with a Cisco router.
If your plans call for connecting the AirPort Express to the Cisco router using a wired Ethernet connection, it should be possible to configure the Express that way.

Try another browser. If it is not going to work, use another computer. By the way, what is the model number of your router?

  • Regarding mac os x server 10.6 installation, getting an error" Please inspect your network setting and try again"

    Hi,
we need your urgent help regarding mac os x server 10.6 installation, actually we are stuck in the installation at the point of Network settings. getting an error " Please inspect your network setting and try again" pls give us a solution of it , would be very thankful.
    MTS

Well, there isn't much anyone can tell you without more information.
Clearly the installer is complaining about your proposed network configuration, but without seeing it, or knowing what you expect, it's almost impossible to advise.
I'd guess that it's some combination of the IP address/subnet mask and router address that's invalid, but without seeing them that's little more than a stab in the dark.

  • "closed network" setting in a WDS network

I've just shifted to the APExtreme after many years in LinksysLand. I've recycled an old old APExpress (circa '04) and combined the two in a WDS network, in order to boost signal on the other side of that metal elevator. (Yes, I know WDS is less efficient...but the price was right, etc).
I prefer to suppress SSID broadcast, so I set both base and remote stations to "closed network." But then the MacBook and iPhone couldn't see the network - either station. Turn that option off on the Express (remote station) only, and the devices see the network and set up on the Express G channels. Meanwhile, down the hall, everybody can see the Extreme, and those that can use the 5gHz channels do so, with that set as a "closed network."
What am I missing? Or not understanding about WDS? thx

Unfortunately that option is simply a deception to the user and offers a false sense of security. The network name is still broadcast between any connected client and the base station. Therefore the network name is easily discovered.
The only thing enabling that option does successfully is cause connection and configuration problems. The option is best avoided.

  • Trouble setting up a WDS network

I am trying to setup a WDS network with two AirPort Extreme N devices. The first is hardlined and in the basement setup as WDS Main. The second is on the 3rd floor and entirely wireless with the exception of a printer connected to it and is setup as WDS Remote. The network works, but any apple machines take sometimes up to minutes to load web pages, while Windows machines load them instantly. I have run speed and ping test from both types of machine, and the numbers are good from both. Any ideas as to why the apple machines connect so slow?

Please see my response to your other post.
You do not want to use WDS for this as it will cut your network bandwidth by 50%. Instead, use Apple's "extend a wireless network" feature. This will provide much better performance than a WDS arrangement.

  • Problems setting up WDS with AE

I recently had some problems with my home network and performed a hard reset on both of my AE base stations in order to reconfigure the network. I am trying to set up a WDS network with the two AE's (one being connected to the internet and the other serving as a remote to extend the range and use AirTunes function). When using Airport Utility and going through the setup process, I set up the primary AE with the connection to the internet. I am then using Airport Utility to try and configure the second AE to join the main network, but AU is not allowing the remote AE to connect/join the primary network. I keep getting an error message saying that the Apple wireless device could not join the WDS network and that I should close Airport Utility and try again. I have tried this a number of times, as well as performing more hard resets of both AE's and nothing seems to be working - any suggestions??
This is the first time I have ever had this problem using AU. In past versions of the program this has always worked setting up the network automatically, but does not seem to be working this time. Any suggestions would be helpful.
    Thanks,
    JB

  • Upgrade to 7.5.2 broke WDS network

For the past 6 months I have used a Time Capsule and 2 Airport Express to configure a WDS network. The TC is the Main station and then I have one AE as a relay and one as a remote station. It has worked perfectly fine until I was prompted to upgrade.
For what I can tell, both the TC and the Relay are now running on the firmware 7.5.2 but the Relay is no longer working. It no longer shows up in the Airport Utility and if I reset it and reconfigure it, the update ends up with the cryptic message "An error occurred while reading the configuration. Make sure your AirPort wireless device is plugged in and in range of your computer or connected via Ethernet and try again. (-6753)"
I'm not sure what to do at this point. I tried to revert to the previous firmware but that didn't work either, I'm getting a similar error... Has anybody run into the same issue or has a suggestion on what to do to get it back working again?
    Thanks

I came across the same issue.
I have a simple set up: just have two AE, one main and the other relay. (I used to have four AEs previously, but got rid of those when N version came out, though configured them as WDS in case I needed to add an extra)
Anyways, I read on another thread that one should update firmware to 7.5.2 of all relay(s) and remote(s) first, before updating the main station's firmware.
Not sure if that's true, but if it is, it's a real shame AU doesn't just stop you from screwing it up, as it knows which base is doing what in the WDS you've set up.
So.. I had just updated the main, and upon updating the relay, AU failed to "see it" appear again - never came back from reboot. And from that point onwards my WDS was dead.
I tried a full reset, reconfigured everything from scratch, both AEs now being in 7.5.2, but WDS would refuse to work - checked the log file and found the main station complaining with the following line over and over (ie. kept on associating/disassociating):
    Dec 28 19:49:30 Severity:5 Deauthenticating with station XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX (reserved 2).
So, after checking other threads, and googling some more, I just gave up (for now) and put the main AE as Wifi network creator, and the other AE set to join&extend the network.
I really wish the team @ Apple could make some improvements on WDS... or check if something's wrong with latest firmware. I mean, it could be me goofing up somewhere, but I reset both boxes 3 times (ie. redid the whole steps for WDS creation from scratch thrice..) and I've set up WDS before — until this last "rogue" 7.5.2 update came along, it was working perfectly.. kinda wish I didn't update sometimes
Anyways, for now I'm staying away from WDS, cuz for me it's broken

  • Solution for Poor signal in a wireless WDS network with two Airport Extreme

I have just bought my second Airport Extreme to create a wireless network with the best possible signal. I have one Airport Extreme in my office and the second one (supposedly the remote base) in the living room, two brick walls and 7 meters away. I have follow Apple instructions for the setup, main base "Create a Wifi Network" and Extend network option selected. The remote "join an existent network" and Allow wifi clients selected. According to Apple this is a WDS network between two Airport Extreme.
The network is working and the signal from my iMac is very good in my Office. In the living room the signal with my PC laptop is also very good.
Problem is that my iPod Touch OS 3.0 (I use it as a remote control in my living room with a twonky media server) gets now a very weak wifi signal in my living room, in many cases I lose the wifi sgnal although I sit two meters away from the remote Airport Extreme in the Living Room. If I go to my office with the iPod, then I get a good signal.
I think that only the first Airport Extreme in my Office (Main Base) is emitting a wifi signal and the second Airport Extreme (remote) is only receiving the wifi signal not making a repetition of the wifi signal. (Sorry for my explanation, I am not technical on this.)
I thought that, in a WDS configuration, the remote Airport Extreme WAS suppose to also replicate the wifi signal in my living room.
I have also tried a WDS manual setup with the two airport with the same results.
Is there a solution for this?. Do I have to connect the two Airport Extreme with a wire ethernet in order to be able to have a wifi signal strong enough in my living room for my iPod Touch?.
    Thank you for your time.

Thank you Bob for your time.
I understand from your words that with a DHCP reservation I can force de Airport Extreme Main Base to assign an specific IP to a particular client in the network. Is that correct?. If that is the case, I will reserve the 10.0.1.3 to the Twonky Media Server (I need this to be fixed to this IP) and I will change the configuration of the remote Airport Extreme to DHCP automatic.
I will give it a try in a few days. I have spent so many hours with this set up that I am a bit terrified to start again today, to tired from work.
Just one last question. Setting up the remote Airport was very difficult with the Airport Utility. I had to reset and start many times as I always got two errors in the set up:
    1.- Internet not connected.
After a minute or so, most of the time the problem was corrected automatically as the remote found the main base that is connected to the internet. I got a confirmation message for this.
2.- Second problem was that Airport Utility said that it could no connect the remote to the specified network. Sometimes (not always) the remote light turn green both in the Airport Extreme and in the Airport Utility, BUT I never got confirmation of a successful installation. Nevertheless, the connection was established because the wifi network exist.
Do I have to "disable the WAN port" during the installation of the remote Airport to avoid the problems?.
    Best Regards,
    Fernando

  • Problems with getting WDS network to work - TimeCapsule + AirportExtreme

Hi There, Apologies if this has been answered somewhere else but I have searched and still havent managed to solve my problem.
I have a TC plugged into our cable modem which is broadcasting wirelessly fine. What I am trying to do is extend the network by using a Airport Extreme BaseStation in another room which has a PC computer plugged into the Airport Extreme via ethernet cable that (the PC doesn't have wireless capability).
so this is what I am trying to do:
    Internet - (ethernet) - TimeCapsule - (wifi) - Airport Extreme - (ethernet) - PC
The Time Capsule is running version 7.4.2 software
The Airport Extreme is running version 5.7
What I have tried so far is to set the TC to "Participate in a WDS network" on channel 1 using WPA/WPA2 Personal passwords. In the WDS settings it is set to WDS main and I have allowed the Airport ID of the AE.
In the settings on the AEI have the wireless network name set to the same as the TC, I have the radio mode on 802.11g only (i have tried the others too but didn't seem to work). The wireless mode is set to Participate in WDS network, channel set to 1 and under WDS settings I have it set as WDS relay and the ID of the TC in WDS main settings.
The TC when i look at its set up occasionaly flashes up WDS error, all it says is The device is set up as WDS network but no other Apple Wireless devices were found.
Im really scratching my head on this one, Im not an expert on networks at all but normally configuring apple stuff has caused a lot less headaches that this.
Can anyone tell me if I am doing anything obviously wrong or any suggestions as to what I can do to get this working. (I personally blame the PC for not having wireless!!!)
    Cheers
    D

    Welcome to the discussion area!
WDS can be tricky. Instead of setting up the second device as a relay, you might try setting it up as a remote. Normally, a relay is used between a base and a remote. Take a look at the excellent instructions previously posted by expert Tesserax as follows:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2355832&tstart=0
And you could also refer to Apple's instructions on pages 42-44 in the Designing AirPort Networks Guide

  • Can't create a WDS network

    Hello,
I recently purchased a Apple Airport Express & Extreme and have planned to use WDS. Now according to this article (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4262), I tried and was successful up to "*Configuring a WDS main base station*" but only setting Airport Express as main base station.
But after that I was not able to follow the article as Airport Extreme doesn't shows "+*Participate in a WDS network*+". It only shows this two: http://cl.ly/4LGH
    How can I continue further?
    Notes:
    1) I want to make one base station and another remote station.
    2) Would prefer Airport Express to base station & Extreme to be remote station, but vice versa will be fine too.

Extending the network is not helping, while trying out the WDS way. The configuration & issues are as follows:
    1) Using Extreme as main base station & Express as remote.
    2) Both using same channel 1
    3) Both have been assigned same name
    But after all that,
Airport Express shows "WDS Error" , it says" No other wireless device were found". But the main base station shows on Airport utility.
Have no idea how to fix it.

  • Questions about setting up my network with my Mac Pro?

I'm trying to set up my network with my Mac Pro. I have two other roommates that need internet and a printer that we all need to access. The modem is with my Mac Pro in room 1, the printer is with another PC in room 2, and another PC with wifi is in room 3. What is the best way to connect all these.
My idea was to install an Airport card in my Mac Pro, then add an Airport Express station w/airtunes to room 2, to connect the PC and printer. That way, room 3 can access with wifi, and room 2 can physically plug into the Airport Express station. Problem with that is that the Airport Express Card must be professionally installed in my Mac Pro and that $80+ charge on top of the Airport Express and Aiport Card itself, turns this into a $200+ endeavor.
I also have a wireless Linksys router and Linksys WiFi USB receiver. Anybody have any other ideas?
Mac Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Your plan wouldn't work anyway. The Mac Pro can not create a WDS compatible wireless network. Therefore the AirPort Express (AX) can not use WDS to wirelessly join the network. Therefore the AX's Ethernet port will not be activated.
The best solution is to buy an inexpensive wireless router [or the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS)]. Connect the Mac Pro via Ethernet to the router. Add a wireless adapter to the PC in room 2. Therefore the PCs will connect wirelessly while the Mac Pro connects via Ethernet.

  • Error code: 0x80070035 The network path was not found

"Error code: 0x80070035 The network path was not found" while trying to access another PC running Windows 7 Ultimate I searched and read dozens of similiar posts to try to resolve this issue with no success.
The situation is, I have a router in home with 4 PC's connected. My central PC is running Windows 7 Ultimate. The others are Windows 7 Ultimate again, and 2 running XP Pro. No special Firewalls, just have Windows Firewall enabled on all PC's, and am running KasperskyInternetSecurity2010 on all. (Have disabled these on all PC's and tried to view/connect and it didnt make a difference, same error)
Fact one: not attempting a Homegroup connection at all, just simply wishing to connect in a basic network environment where I can drag and drop files between all PC's in my Home Network or in my house , however its considered. But on the Windows 7 I am unable to view either of the XP's only the other Win7, and when I try to access that one is when I get the "Error code: 0x80070035 The network path was not found".
Furthermore, while troubleshooting the problem I opened a Command Prompt in all computers, then an "ipconfig" to view each ip address. Then began to ping each machine to determin connectivity. Which resulted in partial success. My main Win7 machine (which i am on now) was able to ping successfully to all machines. But all other machines were unable to ping to me (main Win7). with a 100% loss.
So at least I determined this is most likely a helpful fact in resolving this. Going into "services.msc" I made sure that all the obvious services are started and running:
DCHP Client, Homegroup Listener, Homegroup Provider, Link-Layer Topology Discovery Mapper, NetTcp Port SHaring Service, Network Connections, Network List Service, Network Location Awareness, TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper
All strarted and running in Automactic mode.
Not sure what other information I can give at this point, to help assist in fixing this problem. Please dont hesitate to ask for me for more info if needed. Ready and willing to try anything to get this working, except for reinstalling the OS. All my programs work great and do not wish to go through the drama ao reinstalling all my programs and activating them and redoing all my Adobe settings and CAD settings.
    Someone please help !

    Hi,
In addition, I would like to suggest the following:
    Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP:
    1.    Go to “Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network Connections”.
    2.    Right-Click on the connection and choose Properties.
    3.    Click “Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Version 4” in the list.
    4.    Click Properties, and then click Advanced.
    5.    On the Advanced TCP/IP settings windows, go to “WINS” tab.
    6.    Under NetBIOS setting, click “Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP”, and then click OK.
    Thanks.
