Error Sharing "Full Quality"

Hi All,
I have just completed an iMovie 5.02 movie and want to export it into Quicktime . It's an MPEG-4 format and the iMovie Project file is about 1.4GB. I choose Share > Quicktime > Full Quality, select a file name and hit OK. It runs for about 60-75mins, then just stops - no error message. It creates an .mp4 file (about 145MB) - when I try to open it with Quicktime, I get an error ("-50"?!). I've done this twice now, with no luck. Any ideas?
Thanks very much
Steve

  • Re-importing shared full-quality QT “lossless”?

Is there any loss of quality that would accumulate when sharing a project as a full-quality QT, then importing it back into iMovie, editing it a little, then repeating? I’m thinking of using this workflow as a way of merging lots of little clips and shifted-around audio extractions to a single clip and will probably want to do this a couple of times per project, before compressing it in final form. It’ll eventually wind up as a QT on CD, if that has any bearing on the question.

Is there any loss of quality that would accumulate when sharing a project as a full-quality QT, then importing it back into iMovie, editing it a little, then repeating?
No, IF you take care to use the same DV codec AND you do not edit the clips (i.e. decompress-recompress the DV codec). Straight cuts are OK because no recompression is involved.
...and even editing the clips (adding titles etc) should not produce any visible difference unless the editing app produces its own artifacts. ...and iMovie HD DOES produce its own artifacts to PAL titles (NTSC is OK):
    http://www.sjoki.uta.fi/~shmhav/iMovieHD_bugs.html#titlesPAL
BTW, iMovie 4 had a bug where it used the wrong DV codec for PAL. If you didn't notice it, you lost some quality when converting to the correct codec.

  • HT5903 Are photos stored in Shared Photo Streams in full quality?

Does anyone know whether photos uploaded to Shared Photo Streams are stored in full (original) quality?
I'm interested to know whether Photo Streams can be relied upon for backing up photo collections (i.e. they can be downloaded again in original quality in case of loss from the computer/phone/iPad they were taken with), or whether it is only really for sharing.
    Thanks

    No. Not for shared streams

My photo stream keeps photos at full quality in the cloud, although it only syncs lower resolution photos to an iOS device, but full resolution to your computer.

  • IMovie Hangs After Full Quality Sharing Is Complete

    Hi,
Why does this happen? I did a Full Quality Share on a 2-1/2 hour multi-clip movie (using Share Selected Clips Only). The export progress dialog hung after the export was clearly finished. I eventually had to Force Quit iMovie.
The exported movie looks fine in QT Pro. However, Movie Properties in QT shows that this movie is 24 frames longer than what I exported from iMovie. Doesn't seem to be a big deal, but annoying nonetheless.
I'm more concerned about iMovie hanging after a long movie export as described.

2-1/2 hour multi-clip movie (using Share Selected Clips Only)
so, your project is in timeline even longer then 150min? how much did you import into iM, to create such a "beast"? must be a gigantic project, hm?... Titanic II... ;-))
iM is a consumer product, we do read of reports here, that from some point of size (imported data, length, complexity of project), iM is a little "overwhelmed..." esp., iM is part of iLife, meaning, mainly meant exports go to tape (=60min max.) or iDVD (120min max.)
secondly, MacOsX is a UNIX system, which makes excessive use of socalled temp-files on (startup-) harddrive... it is recommended, not to overcrowd the drive 80 - 90% of max.
probably, your ~35GB of data transfer from a ~60GB project was simply too much for your Mac?
    helpful?

  • Video freezes when exporting to Full Quality

[Background: I've been working on a video project in iMovie HD that I'm doing in pieces - exporting each section of the video at full quality when it's done, so that later I can put them all together in a new project.]
Lately I've been having major problems exporting to full quality Quicktime files. The exported video freezes a few frames in, though the audio continues to play normally. This does not happen if I save it to a smaller quality, say, Web Streaming.
I'm having trouble seeing a pattern in how/why/when this happens, too. I have successfully exported movies to full quality both before and after movies that export incorrectly. The first project that had this happen, I decided to reassemble bit by bit to find out if something specific was causing the problem. Turns out that Full Quality exporting started having this problem if I had added titles. After jumping through something like 50 hoops - exporting little pieces, reimporting, exporting just the titles, etc., etc - I managed to work around the issue. Bit of a headache but all seemed to be well.
BUT, the frozen video problem soon happened again. The next time I had this trouble exporting, there were no titles in the project at all, and the problem instead occurred once I added music. So there does not seem to be a pattern within iMovie itself. This makes me think it's either a Quicktime problem or something to do with my computer itself. I have 2GB of memory, 37GB of space left on my hard drive, and I'm running Quicktime 7.4.1 and iMovie HD 6.0.4.
Please help! I'm on a bit of a deadline, too. This is driving me crazy!

Thanks Matt. I am in the same boat as many people have obviously been in - trying to burn a DVD to a film fest deadline of tomorrow, and after 4 hours of trying to make a disk image, getting 'error during burn'.
    I have one question.
    a) In imovie, I clicked the 'create iDVD' button to create this project - which has problems burning.
    b) Now if I simply try to drag that .mov file into the iDVD pane as you suggest, is that identical to what I have done in a) - in that we're operating with the same basic animal. Of so
    c) I should try the process of exporting to .dv, reimporting to new imovie, redoing chapter markers and THEN dragging the package .mov to the iDVD pane - hoping that chapter markers are preserved.
Oh ... someone said one should try to save the .mov as a sel contained file. is that necessary?
Thank you for sitting in front of you Mac!

  • Leopard Screen Sharing (VNC) Quality?

Before Leopard I used to use Vine VNC Server for accessing my Mac over the internet. Now that Leopard has its own VNC (Screen Sharing) server built in theres no need to use it.
Normally when I VNC'ed to my Mac over the internet using UltraVNC on Windows it would automatically select the best image compression/quality (eg only displaying 256 colors only etc) to make it much quicker over the internet.
But the new Leopard VNC server only seems to allow full quality screen sharing, which is painfully slow over the internet (esp as my macs running at 1600x1500!), selecting anything other than Auto in UltraVNC will instantly disconnect after entering my VNC password.
Does Leopard's VNC (Screen Sharing) support compression/image quality like Vine VNC? If so how do you enable it?
    Thanks for any help!

Thats what I thought as well, the "Allow control" option in ARD admin prefs is off. When ARD admin is not launched VNC to the computer works fine. If ARD admin is opened I can no longer VNC to it. Its like the "Allow control" pref doesn't actually do anything & instead is forced on always

  • "Full Quality" = Poor quality text?

I am making a DVD, and am using video that is exported from iMovie HD. When I chose "full-quality" for the export, and view it when it is done, the quality (compared to how it looks in iMovie) is crap. It is especially noticeable in the "title slides" where there is just white text over a black background.
In my opinion, it definitely doesn't look like "full quality". What am I to do?

What I don't get, is that when I try to do the "share
to iDVD" feature, it opens a completely new project.
I already had one started, but it won't let me share
into that one. What do I do?
To add an iMovie project to an existing iDVD project, drag the iMovie project into the iDVD window. That is how we routinely include multiple iMovie projects on a single DVD.
As Lennart said, there's no good reason to export the iMovie project to a Full Quality movie you send to iDVD. In fact, it can cause problems. Your DVD won't contain the chapters you created in iMovie, for example.
When you Share an iMovie project to iDVD, or drag the iMovie project into the iDVD window, iDVD grabs a special movie iMovie stores for it inside the iMovie project package. The movie is in the package's Shared Movies > iDVD folder. To look inside the package, Control-click on the iMovie project and choose "Show Package Contents" from the popUp menu. (No need to go there unless you're interested. Don't change anything.)
The Full Quality movie you created is confusing you, for it's a confusing thing. iMovie calls it that not because it plays the movie with great clarity, but because it retains all the quality of the iMovie project. Exporting to a Full Quality movie hands us a movie we can import to another project with no loss of quality. Each type of iMovie project has its own type of Full Quality movie, following the movie format of the exporting project. There's never any loss of quality.
Changing the playback features of a DV movie in QuickTime Player has no effect on the quality of the movie itself or on the quality of a DVD you burn of the movie. It only affects playback quality in QuickTime Player itself.
QuickTime has been around a long time. On yesterday's slow computers, we would lower the playback quality on (huge) DV movies so we could play them more smoothly.
Note that if you have QuickTime Pro, you can set your QT Player preferences to play DV movies with high quality by default.

  • "Shared" Video quality disappointing

When I use iM to share even full quality .DV video from my iM project I get a lower quality video! It appears to be somewhat "pixelated" especially with horizontal lines during even the slightest motion.
And when I export to .mpg or .mov formats the video is very pixelated when compared to videos of similar compression and size in the same format, what gives?
Would QTpro solve these quality problems?
    TIA
    -Tim
    eMac   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   1.25ghz 1gb superdrive

.dv is a format meant for being displayed on TVs:
    640x480/interlaced.. a computer has a different
concept of displaying "video"/content... a much
higher res, no interlacing (and diff. colors, etc)
I actually just "shared", "QuickTime" (tab) in "full quality" from iM, then viewed in QT. No change in view size, did see significant loss of picture quality, as described.
Believe me I am NOT blaming my MAC!!
watching an iM project on a Mac fullscreen results in
a "blow up" =>loss of quality
    and:
QTplayer is by default set to "best performance" not
    "high quality" (in QTpro: -J,
    video/quality/checkbox...)
Don't have QT-pro (had it in QT6, on a different MAC, since sold)
so, DO NOT judge pic quality on your Mac!
playout to tape/watch on telly; or use the "live
playout" feature of iM via fw connected camcorder +
    TV....
Believe me I am NOT blaming my MAC!!, Just looking to make videos of comparable quality and of comparable size to .mpg I see on web. There must be a way, and my iMovie doesn't seem to do it right now.
the dv exported by iM are in highest possible
    quality... don't worry
...And when I export to .mpg...
iM/QT does not support export to .mpg ... how/with
what app did you generate these files?
I "shared" to quicktime, "expert settings", movie to Divx, and mpeg-4, the ipod setting .m4v seemd pretty good, but obviously small, and larger file than comparable video (in size and length) to other .m4v for ipod I have found.
I also have used the .dv files with ffmpeg, and I still cannot match the quality of similar viseos made by others without a MUCH larger file.
    Any Suggestions?

  • Screen Sharing Observe Quality

I found on a few web site a handy tip to change the quality of screen sharing. The tip says that opening terminal and typing:
    defaults write com.apple.ScreenSharing controlObserveQuality #
Where # is the quality of the screen sharing: 1=black and white, 2=grey scale, 3=8 bit color, 4=16 bit color, 5 = full color
I've tried this with ichat 5.0.3, but it doesn't seem to work. I still get full quality even if I set it to:
    defaults write com.apple.ScreenSharing controlObserveQuality 1
    Any help here?
    Thanks,
    D

    Opps,
    Just spotted something
    defaults write com.apple.ScreenSharing controlObserveQuality #
This s not an iChat setting. It is not a .plist to do with iChat
Most likely it is the setting for the Screen Sharing App. (see System Preferences > Sharing)
The app can be invoked by going to the Go Menu in the Finder > GO to Server and starting the line with VNC:// (Instead of SMB or AFP)
The app that runs this is "hidden" in /System/Library/CoreServices and not in the Applications folder.
I take it this was the Hint ? (which says it is VNC connections = plain Screen Sharing).

  • Ouicktime problem saving to full quality

    Hi everyone
I am having a problem with saving a 26gb film to full quality on quicktime (as thats the default when you click on full quality. It starts to save in full quality but after 10mins I receive this message.
*Please make sure that your project disk has write permission, and that you have enough disk space. (Error -1309)*,
The only thing that I did that may have produced this message is that I changed the name of the film whilst still a imovie file. The project does have write permission i.e. when I got to further information on the file i have permission to read and write. and it's not locked. Also the files are saved in a external hard drive but this has not created a problem before as I have used the full quality before without this problem.
    Would grateful for any insight.
    Clifford.

Make sure the external drive is properly formatted.
Disk Utility can be used to format the drive (erases all data currently on it).

  • Can I stream full quality, non iTunes HD movies with Apple TV 3?

I’m thinking about getting an Apple TV but want to know if I can stream my 1080p movies that are not in iTunes at full quality?
I have a 13’’ MacBook Pro with a 1280x800 native resolution and a 50’’ LG Plasma TV with a 1920×1080 resolution.  If I play a 1080p movie on my MBP in QuickTime/VLC etc. will Apple TV stream the full resolution or just match my MBP lower resolution?
Also, some of my HD movies are 1GB and some are 10GB. Can Apple TV handle that?

AppleTV can only access compatible video in iTunes via its menu system.
If your Mac supports Airplay mirroring you will potentially  be able to screen share the video but none of mine are new enough to test.  Airplay mirroring uses screen sharing type software so the video seen on AppleTv will be a recompressed video output from the Mac and quality may suffer especially if network isn't that fast.
I believe mirroring maxes out at 720p but can't confirm.
If this video is unprotected you'd be better off converting to AppleTv conpatible h264 and adding to iTunes so AppleTV can pull and decode the stream.

  • Full Quality Share?

I'm moving from an older version of iMovie into 7 ('08) and am having trouble determining what export settings to use.
In the older versions of iMovie I used Share -> Full Quality
The video will be imported into Avid for editing so I need as close to source as possible.
I've tried several settings so far in '08 and cannot get the quality where it needs to be.
I guess I'm looking for the '08 equivalent of 'Full Quality' when sharing a movie. .dv or .mov would either be fine formats.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions or guidance you may be able to provide.
    Message was edited by: rustybucket145

Well, after a little more digging and searching it looks like a full quality share is no longer possible in iMovie '08. Bummer.
Anybody know if this is available in iMovie '09?

  • "Full Quality" Export looks rubbish

I've created a slide show, with some transitions and text, about 3 minutes long.
It looks and plays fine when playing in full screen mode from iMovie but when exported to Quicktime it losses soo much quality, im using the full quality setting but it looks more like poor video streaming when played back.
Is there a solution to this or do i just need to open iMovie and play it through that? Idealy i want to be able to playback via "front row" so i can show off to friends and family. Is quicktime the only solution or can FR play multiple formats?
    Kev.
    MacBook, White, 2Ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

There's a new user preference in QuickTime 7 to automatically play movies with the high quality display enabled, if possible. Be sure to set that QT Player preference.
This will not affect the quality when played on other Macs, however.
Full Quality movies aren't intended to be shared with others. They are called Full Quality because they contain all the original source material of the iMovie project in the native DV format. They are large, cumbersome, and difficult for the computer to play. Which is why, historically, the display quality is reduced when played in QuickTime Player. That allows the movie will play smoothly.
You might try exporting the iMovie project to QuickTime using Expert Settings. Configure the export to use the H.264 codec. It delivers very high quality with far less data than a Full Quality movie.

  • Cant export AV Self contained but can export QT Conversion Full Quality DV

Having trouble exporting Quicktime movie, "Self-Contained"is checked. Include Audio & Video. It exports about 3/4 of the way and than get general error. I have searched the forum but found nothing that would help. I have exported it using quicktime conversion Full quality Dv and it exports fine and plays fine. But when I import full quality dv back into fce and render it, the last 10 minutes of the 22 minute video has no sound. All music is aiff and all pics are jpeg, tif, And video is all original DV. Have have made several videos using all the same types of format and have never had this problem. Could someone help. Thanks.....Rick

Did you render all and mix down the audio before you attempted to export the movie?
Sequence > Render All > Both
Sequence > Render Only > Mixdown
Do both of them, in order, then save your project, then try exporting again.
What version of QT do you have on your system?
