Error streaming BBC radio feeds through RealPlayer...

Problem
I am experiencing a problem with the version of Realplayer Mobile pre-loaded on a Nokia E90 running Symbian S60 (version s60.30.19.02M 10-May-2007 09:58:18). The problem occurs when trying to stream the BBC live radio feeds at www.bbc.co.uk/mobile/radio/listen after selecting an ‘RM’ feed there is a couple of seconds pause followed by the error message “Disconnected. Try connecting again?”
Environment
The phone is connecting through my home wifi router (a Netgear WGT624v2) which acts as my network hub. This network hub services a home PC and a work laptop base station, via Ethernet cables, and also to various wifi devices such as PSP’s, laptops and the phone.
The internet connection is supplied by a broadband router (an SMC SMC7404 BRA UK) connected into the wifi network hub via Ethernet
All devices – the mobile, the hub, the broadband router – are running on the current firmware versions.
The wifi connection to the phone works for both web and email. Realplayer mobile plays video and music files.
Further Information
I can successfully stream the www.bbc.co.uk/mobile/radio/listen feeds over my home PC (Windows XP service pack 3) using RealPlayer (Version 11.0.3 Helix Powered Build: 6.0.14.806) which obviously routes through the wifi hub and the broadband router.
On casting around various forums I notice that there may be an issue with Realplayer mobile using different ports than Realplayer. Although, there seems to be no official information on the port settings someone has suggested the range of 6970 to 7170 on UDP is correct. Although, I’m uncomfortable opening such a large range I have allowed port forwarding on the wifi hub to the mobile (no, the mobile is not using a static IP address but I have confirmed that the IP address is correct).
I have also opened both 6970 and 7170 ports on the broadband router for UDP (note not the full range.
Correspondingly, the Realplyer mobile Streaming settings on the phone are :
Proxy->Use Proxy : “No”
Network->Default Access point: “mywifihub”
Network->Online Time: “Unlimited”
Network->Lowest UDP port: “6970”
Network->Highest UDP port: “7170”
Help ?
I’m obviously looking for some guidance here. Can someone please solve my problem ?
I’d like to know:
• Why is realplayer mobile is connecting in a different way to realplayer ?
• What are the ports that realplayer mobile requires, and why does it need them ?
• Is there anything else I need to do to get this thing working ?
Many Thanks,
colin

The mobile listening page on the BBC site is OK for live streams, but if you want to listen to programmes that have already been broadcast, you need to go to the "listen again" page.
I have this working today, perhaps because the BBC have fixed it (I'm sure I tried the same thing the other day).
Here is an example for Radio 3:
* Go to http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio3/listen/index.shtml
* Find the paragraph that starts: "But if you want to listen to a programme broadcast in the last 7 days..."
* Click on the link: BBC Radio3 iPlayer
* Choose the programme you wish to listen to. Episodes of
daily programmes can be found for the week after they have been broadcast: click on "show more episodes"
* Click on the link of the programme you wish to hear.
* A message comes up, inviting you to click on a link to listen in Real Player
* Click that and Real Player opens. Adjust volume using right or left joystick button.
You cannot fast forward or rewind programme, but at least you can listen.
Wonderful. My only minor gripe now is the number of clicks necessary, but at least it works.
A quicker way, and definitely the best of you are using a normal computer rather than a smart phone, is to go to the programme's own page, and follow the link to the last programme(s). On S60 you get the invitation to click to open real player for less than a second, followed by the suggestion to instal Real Player.
Check it out in a few days, when I guess they'll have fixed this much more practical route.
Do post back if this works for you, or if anything is not clear.
I tried this on an E90, but I suppose any S60 phone should handle it.

I am trying to listen BBC radio news from BBC App, but on pressing the button "live radio" I always get the error "there was an error playing this radio feed". What is the source of this error and how can I remove it?

That is probably just a generic error message and you might not ever know what is causing it. Assuming that you have been able to play live radio with the app in the past (I know nothing about the app) and assuming that all other Internet related functions (Safari, email, etc.) are working properly on your iPad, quit the app completely and reboot your iPad.
Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Double tap the home button and the recents tray will appear with all of your recent apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner of the app that you want to close. Tap the home button or anywhere above the task bar.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.
If that fails to resolve the issue, you might want to reboot your router, unplug it for about 30 seconds and then plug it in again.

  • Streaming bbc radio, connection drops out, have to manually reload.

    W7 pc, 4GB ram, virus/malware free. 10 mb/s cable access.
I stream BBC radio 4 in separate window. PROBLEM - connection drops out, never re-connects, have to manually reload. Changing BBC feed from nornal to low bandwidth makes no difference. No ISP bandwidth cap. No problems with other downloads (updates, jpegs etc).
Is there a download manager - don't think it can be the BBC site.

BBC at least in the past has often had problems with its Edge Servers and so listeners outside the UK would have problems that took a long while to be solved, the BBC's support system often failed to pass on info regarding problems. Specific countries/ISP s would have problems but as long as the UK service was unaffected the BBC tended not to notice.
I have not recently used BBC iPlayer online. The overseas low/high bandwidth on the iPlayer stream did not do anything other than restart the stream, overseas users only got the one low bandwidth, the option was an artefact.
AFAIK the BBC does still stream Flash and Windows

As you are using a Widows computer try both streams one may work still.
The BBC no longer has a support forum, but you could look at

As always worth trying clearing the browser cache, and the BBC related cookies.

  • Re: streaming bbc radio, connection drops out, have to manually reload.

Regarding this question (https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/885229) the "HAVE TO MANUALLY RELOAD" aspect of the original question was completely ignored. Why is this true, and why was it ignored? Can't loss of a connection be detected by an Internet radio player? Can't the player automatically attempt to reestablish the connection? Are all players based on the same faulty code? They sure seem to be.

  • Can not stream BBC radio 4. Why can't I get Adobe Flash Player?

    Just taken delivery of iPad2.

There is no flash player for ipad/iphone/ipod and very likely never will be.

  • Listening to BBC Radio

Is there anyway of listening to BBC radio through itunes?
I have tried to use BBC feeds through realplayer but i can't get it to work, it just keeps timing out, even with the newest real 10 and searching the help pages.
Wondered if I could avoid other software and use itunes.

  • BBC Radio Player no longer works with Airport Express

This weekend I've been unable to get connected to the BBC Radio Player (from http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio). This has worked for the past year, and suddenly stopped.
I have narrowed the problem down to the airport express. Radio streaming works without a hitch when I plug in the ethernet cable direct to either mac, or when I connect to another local Wi-Fi connection. But when I use Airport Express, the radio streaming always times-out.
I even set up one of the computers to share internet over the airport, and was easily able to stream the radio connection to the other computer: so the airport cards themselves are working perfectly.
I wondered if anyone else had the same problem. I've noticed it since I upgraded to 10.4.3 and included the 2005-01 Airport Update, though I didn't notice the problem for several days (I did no streaming in that time).
I've tried downgrading to Airport 4.2, and even Airport Express Firmware 6.1.1, but nothing has solved the problem. There isn't an obvious setting I've missed - is there?
If anyone else can stream BBC Radio with all the recent updates applied through Airport Express, I would be interested in hearing from them...

Well, I found the answer to my problem. I'll add it here, in case someone else ever has the same problem.
My Speedtouch modem was set to distribute DHCP addresses. But my Airport Express was ALSO set to do this. This had the strange effect of allowing everything to work, apart from Real Player radio/video streams. I have no idea why this was the only effect.
The solution was to set the Airport Express to do nothing, and let the modem do it all. Now both computers can stream radio at the same time, and everything is fine. But it took many hours to find the problem.

  • BBC Radio 4 Widget

    Hi
I am located in Seattle WA USA. I have set up a wireless network using AirPort Express. I can listen to BBC radio 4 on the computer by means of the BBC4 widget. I can stream (CD & iTunes) music over the wireless network however, I can not stream BBC radio 4 over the network using the BBC4 widget. Anybody have an idea as to what I am doing wrong?
    Thanks

I believe that iTunes is the only program that can currently stream using AirTunes over AirPort Express. Instead of using the widget you would need to be receiving the BBC stream with iTunes to get what you want to work.

  • Streaming live BBC radio through itunes

I've just installed an airport express to listen to music in my kitchen.
I'd also like to listen to the radio - streamed through itunes - in my kitchen, but can't work out how to do this.
Can I either use set my browser to play streamed audio through my airport express, or can I stream radio through itunes?
    Thanks

  • BBC Radio Streams Down on iTunes

To those of you who use BBC Radio streams on iTunes can you confirm that the streams for R1, R2 and R6 are down?
I can still get R3, R4 and R5. but getting URL not found for the above ones.
If anyone has comments or a workaround please let me know. Posting this in iTunes for windows but have the same issue in iTunes for Mac and also on all iOS radio apps I have.
    Thanks,
    Andzzz

Yes, I have them back as of today. I had the stations in a playlist, but found that when I re-checked the actual list in iTunes the URL had changed.
Re-added the the new URLs and all working fine.
    Thanks for the response.

  • DIY how to guide: BBC radio streams in iTunes

Been searching for a while to get BBC radio streams (for me, specifically BBC radio 4) working in iTunes, and since I could't find any information in the discussions here, this is how I did it with help from various sources on the net.
    What you need:
    flip4mac plugins installed (free)
    VLC (free)
QuickTime 7 Pro (the regular QuickTime 7 does not allow saving)
    Safari
    iTunes
You'll find the bbc stream links on the below pages:
    http://iplayerhelp.external.bbc.co.uk/help/playingradio_progs/real_wmastreams
    http://iplayerhelp.external.bbc.co.uk/help/playingradio_progs/local_radiostreams
    What I did:
    1. copy the url to the radio station you want
    2. open the url in VLC, let it start playing
    3. save the playlist as m3u
    4. open the playlist in QuickTime 7 Pro, let it start playing
    5. in QuickTime 7 Pro, save the stream as .mov
    6. open the .mov in iTunes and play it
Even though it lists about 10 minutes in iTunes, it will play the live stream for hours.
    Happy BBC radio-ing in iTunes!

    jeffreyandtibor wrote:
Well I know a much easier one:
    open iTunes
    click radios
    click news/talk radios
    click radio 4
That would be indeed be easier if it worked: unfortunately it doesn't - it looks rather as if the BBC have turned the stream off (unless it's a fault condition, of course).

  • Anyone else getting interference, crackle, whistling noise on BBC radio streams?

I have been listening to BBC Radio on iTunes for years - and it has had its issues - but generally pretty solid.
I have recently noticed a background whistling/whine/crackle in the background. I don't get it on iPlayer or the live web stream from the BBC, but with the iTunes stream I get it on all my PC's and Mac in the house.
Anyone have any ideas what it could be? Or is anyone having the same issue?
Not sure if its something wrong with my LAN or other local issue. Any insight much appreciated.
    Andy

Pretty sure this is the same issue...

  • Listening to BBC radio stream

    Hi
I live in Bangkok and like to listen to the BBC radio 5 web stream while driving around town.
Currently I'm using WunderRadio but I was wondering if anyone would recommend different radio streaming software?
    Thanks
    Mick

    Hi BkkMick,
My app (yes, I'm the developer, and I will get paid if you buy my app) ooTunes Radio has many of the BBC streams. However, only those that are available in windows media audio (WMA format) will work in the apps that support wma format. ooTunes Radio (my app), Wunder, pocket tunes and FStream (a free app) all support wma audio streams. I have the BBC 5 live and BBC 5 sports xtra streams already in the built in database and they work great. The full list of stations compatible with my app is here: http://ootunes.com/s/ though there are a few BBC streams there that only work in the UK (they are labeled that way). Good Luck!

  • Id like my college radios stream to be available through itunes radio..

    Hi,
I am the Program Director at my university's radio station, and would like the stream to be available through iTunes Radio. I have read through some old threads on here that sounded similar to my question, but nothing really helped me find a solution or a dead end.
any help would be appreciated. thanks

I know I've seen stations disappear from the lists - Radio Paradise comes to mind even though it's back now. And the number of stations in the Eclectic list is huge (130+) compared to the early days of iTunes.
It's definitely a strange little backwater area of iTunes that gets little attention, but it's hardly a static environment.
