Error synching Smart Albums

Just recently I have been getting the following error when synching smart albums from iPhoto on my iPhone 3G:
"The iPhone cannot be synched. The required file cannot be found."
I am able to synch recent events or normal albums. I do have the latest iPhone software installed (v. 2.2)
Any help is appreciated.

TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Smart Album errors detecting photos w/ missing faces

I created a smart album (Faces is "unnamed") to find photos with missing faces. I went through and identified each of the photos. As I did this, as soon as I put in the name, many (but not all) disappeared from the album.
However, the Smart Album still has a number of photos, even though there are no unidentified images. I checked each one to see if there were small boxes that I missed, but there weren't.
I deleted the album and set up a new smart album (with the same criteria) and the images still appear in the album.
Is there any way to make my smart album smarter? (remove a plist???)
    Thanks!

.  "Affe".  I have a face named "Sculpture".
I was quite impressed that Aperture's Face Recognition recognizeed the baboon's face.
I have some nice tagged sculptures too.
And some of the more cheeky suggestion by Aperture I named "Funny Face", for example - where does Aperture see a Face here in the bottom part of the picture?

  • A single photo in Aperture smart album shows multiple times on Apple TV2.

Sometimes a random photo in my Aperture smart albums displays on my ATV2 multiple times..can I fix this? For example, currently a single picture shows up on the Apple TV in the photos taken "in the past week" smart album 124 times, and the same picture shows up in the "in the past month" smart album 15 times.
When I double check the picture in the original smart album on the computer, it appears correctly, i.e. only one time.
    Suggestions?

I'm having the same problem.  I deleted all the photos in the photostream then tried to drag a couple new ones in to see if they'd synch.  Nothing is happening.  I recently installed aperture (have about 125 gb in the library).  If anyone has an idea what to do, i'm open to try something.

  • IPhoto 6 consistently crashes after adding smart albums

Due to which I am attributing my problem to human error.
    My error.
    My problem is this.
I take a lot of pictures for work and would like to use smart albums to seperate my photos. I've tried to set them up so that one would contain all the ones for all the stores I'm involved with. Then four others that will separate those pictures into the specific store.
They were working just fine. Then today I added the last two for the individual stores and the program keeps crashing. I've started with a fresh library and reimported twice (a pain to figure which photos I've adjusted and manipulated and the originals) and everything seemed okay.
But after I add the smart albums and quit the app, it won't reopen.

    Ian:
Are those the real titles of your smart albums? If not are you using any special characters in them?

  • Smart album

    Hi all !
I migrated my iPhoto to Aperture 2. Quiet a mess to have everything organized properly. I have over 4000 photos, classified in albums. Most of those albums had their content changed in Aperture for some reason. So I need to refill them.
I need to classify them by month.
So the idea is to have a smart album, that would pick pictures from a spécific album, and dsplay the pictures shot from a specific date to another. For the calendar part no problem. For the source album I can't figure out how to do it. So I applied a keyword to all pictures of the source album. But then the option in the smart album pannel "keyword" remains greyed out and I cant delect it.
Could lease someone help me out on that one?
    Many thanx and best regards,

There have to be some sort of error regarding the keywords. If you add a keyword to a selection of images then that keyword should display in the Smart Settings (Smart Album Panel) when you create the Smart Album.
Try to add another keyword to some of the images in the project.
    Regards
    Paul K

  • Cannot create a Smart Album

when I select "New Smart Album" nothing happens. No error message, nothing. I can create anything else, the option isn't greyed out. Not sure why this is happening or how to correct. Thanks

  • Smart album from Light Table not working

Hello. I'm new to the forum so forgive me if this question has already been answered or is very newbie.
I currently have 1.5 and am going through the Apple Pro Training Series book. I'm stuck on lesson 7. When I try to create a Smart Album of 5 star rated photos, they don't appear in the album. The photos are clearly marked 5 stars on the light table but not in the project, which I think is why they are not showing up in the smart album. Shouldn't they be marked as 5 stars in the project after being marked that way on the light table?
Hopefully that wasn't too confusing. Can anyone help?

Answered my own question. It appeared to be an IOTK error(idiot on the keyboard). I just had to check the "ignore stacks" box in the Query HUD. Sorry to waste your time.

  • Smart Album "Referenced" doesn't behave as expected

    Hello,
I'm a little confused and hope someone can explain.
I've decided upon a purely referenced model, keeping my master files on an external drive. I have setup a few smart albums that display: managed, referenced, and missing images.
I am under the impression that all my images are referenced. So the following surprises me and I'd like to better understand what it means:
When I select "All Photos", I see a total of 645 images.
When I select my "Managed Photos" smart album, I see zero images (as expected).
When I select "Referenced Photos" smart album, I see 35 images (not expected!).
For the latter, the smart album is setup with: Include if ALL the following match: Rating >= Unrated; File Status = Referenced.
When I go back to "All Photos", select them all, right-click and bring up the "Manage Referenced Files" dialog, it shows 630 files on my external hard drive and no other files identified. This suggests to me that 15 images are NOT referenced, but that doesn't jive with the smart album views above.
Any help interpreting this would be appreciated.
    Thanks
    Tony.

OK, I've found out my error.
I didn't realize that when you create a smart folder, the 'smarts' only apply to the images in your current context. I.e., if you happen to have an album selected, then the smart album is created to only work on that album.
I deleted my smart folders and started again by selecting "All Photos", then creating the smart folders.
Now things are working as expected.
    Tony.

  • Smart albums in new Photos?

Does the 'smart album' feature (or something similar) still exist in the new Photos app?
I travel a lot and don't always have access to WiFi, so I am not very exited about the iCloud Photo Library concept.
What I usually do is upload photos to my MacBook Pro. As I don't want all photos on my iPad, I rate the ones I want with a star (this seems to be discontinued) and then create a smart album by 'picking' the starred photos. Using iTunes, I then download the smart album to the iPad. Works fine!
But without the star rating it becomes problematic to do this. And I think somewhere I read that smart albums don't exist anymore.
And 'places' also seems to have disappeared, whilst 'Faces', which I see as a gimmick, is still there.
Looks like the features I used in iPhoto (which I agree was a very clunky app) have all been axed.
Any idea how I can achieve my goal: get subsets of albums onto my iPad without using WiFi or 3 - 4 G?

    Thanks!
I'll wait and see if there are any other replies.
If the local iTunes synch is removed, the new app is pretty useless for me.
And it seems that (apart from the extra emoticons), there is not all that much new in 10.10.3.
As I don't want to clutter up my system with two different photo apps, I won't upgrade for now.
After the 'update' of the iWork apps, (and smaller things like persistent bugs in Automator) now this....
Apple is moving more and more away from me.

  • Is there a way to burn multiple smart albums to DVD?

I just finished shooting a wedding.  I have made a number of smart albums for Reception, Dance, Ceremony, etc...
Now I would like to burn all of these albums onto one DVD to send to the client.  But I would like each album to be in its own folder on the DVD.  I could go the long way and export each album into a folder on the desktop and then put them all in a burn folder.
Is there a more automated way of doing this, such as a plugin maybe?  After a little searching I found BurnToDisc from Blue Room software but it looks like you can only select one album at a time to burn to DVD.  I would like to be able to select all 8 or 9 albums and have them burned in one operation.
    Thank you for any help

    As I wrote:
There's only one problem, I'm not sure if this will work for smart albums in folders.
so unfortunately I was right. Smart Albums behave differently then regular Albums one of the biggest differences is the way Folders and Smart Albums interact.
With a regular album if it is in a folder clicking on the folder shows the images in the album. With smart albums this doesn't happen, the folder doesn't show the images in the smart albums it contains.
A few work arounds off the top of my head:
convert the smart albums into regular albums. With the smart album selected and in browser mode click on the magnifying glass icon at the top right to open the browser filter HUD. At the bottom of the filter HUD is a button New Album with Current Images click it and a regular album with the images from the smart album will be created. Once you've done this to the smart albums the procedure I wrote should work.
You could manually create the folders in the Finder and export each smart album individually to the corresponding folder you created.
Let us know if either of those work for you,
    regards

    Hi,
My wife and I both have the iphone 5.
I backup all our photos onto the one iphoto but she wants to be able to now see the photos she took on her iphone 5 only and not mine.
I've tried using smart albums but there is no option to pick between two of the same devices.. Is there any way I can just her iphone 5 pics to show up and ignore mine?

  • Is there a way to display the number of pictures or photos in a smart album

when I look at my project view on the left, all of the projects or folders show the number of photos that are in them at a glance. However, on my smart albums, it just shows the looking glass which you can click on to edit the properties. Is there any way for aperture to show the number of photos in a smart album without having to open the smart album and count? Thanks!

No. But when you click on them, the number of images they contain will be at the bottom of the Browser screen and in Split View just above the bar separating the Viewer from the thumbnails.

  • IPhoto 8.1.2 can you create a smart album with only one face

I'm using iPhoto 8.1.2 and have about 23k photos in the library. I have identified 32 key faces, and would now like to create some smart albums that contain only the face or faces that I want and to exclude all the others.  S for example  a smart album that has only my son.
I tried using the doesn't contain this face, but you can only have around 10 filters/critiria in a smart album.
    any suggestions are appriciated

You can't really, because you can't exclude enough of the faces.
I would keyword the preferred images as well, so finding the face and the keyword would find the pics of the person alone.

  • Whats the difference between and Album and a Smart Album

OK, just upgraded.... So, whats the difference between an Album and a Smart Album?
Also, I like to organise my stuff, so if I create a folder for each year, and then a project within that year, why is it that the photos are always in both - and then again if I chose to create an album specific to a project, they are there again.
    So it might look:
              Folder (2012 Equine Photography)
                   Project - Specific Events
Album - Big Barn Dressage May
Does this mean the individual photo is stored 3 times and using 3 times the space?
    Thanks guys!

No. Conceptually the Master only lives lives in the single (time based) Project you import it into. Albums are just collections of pointers that point to  images in various Projects.
"Big Barn Dressage May" could be a Project, but only if it is only one day and a limited number of image files; otherwise an Album. "2012 Equine Photography" should be an album or a Folder of Albums. "Specific Events" could be an Album or a Folder of Albums.
A Project should not be used as a Folder.
From an earlier post of mine:
Folders are indeed flexible organizational tools but IMO often overused. Folders can effectively hide contents from view and therefore require users to remember how folders are nested and what is inside them. Folders were the only way to deal with single-original film, but are IMO limiting to image database thinking.
The way I look at it conceptually:
Aperture is a database (DB), and each image file lives in one Project.
Albums are just collections of Pointers that point to individual image files living in one or more Projects. Since they just contain pointers, albums can be created or deleted at will without affecting image files. Very powerful. And Albums of pointers take up almost zero space, so they are fast and do not make the Library size grow.
Keywords can be applied to every image separately or in batches. Keywords are hugely powerful and largely obviate the need for folders. Not that we should never use folders, just that we should use folders only when useful organizationally - - after first determining that using keywords and albums is not a better approach.
As one example imagine the keyword "flowers."  Every image of a 100,000 images Library that has some flowers in it has the keyword flowers. Then say we want to put flowers in an ad, or as background for a show of some kind, or to print pix for a party, or even just to look for an image for some other reason. We can find every flower image in a 100k-image database in 2 seconds, and in another few seconds create an Album called "Flowers" that points to all of those individual images.
Similarly all family pix can have a keyword "family" and all work pix can have a key word "work." Each individual pic may have any number of keywords. Such pic characteristics (work, family, flowers, etc.) should not be organized via folders.
So by using keywords and albums we can have instant access to every image everywhere, very cool. And keywords and albums essentially take up no space in the database.
Another approach is to use a folder "Family" for family pix, a folder "Flowers" for flowers pix and another folder "Work" for work pix. IMO such folders usage is a very poor approach to using an images database (probably stemming from old paper or film work practices). Note that one cannot put an image with family in a field of flowers at a work picnic in all three folders; but it is instant with keywords.

  • I have uploaded photos from the past and they are grouped by dates.  How do I seperate those photos into their own folder/album so that I can easily identify the contents.  Also, what is the difference between Album, Smart Album and folders?

I have uploaded photos from the past and they are automatically arranged by date.  As a result, there are many events grouped into one library/event/folder/album (not sure of the proper terminology) I'd like to separate them into folders/albums/smart albums so that I can easily identify the contents.  How do I do that and do I delete the originals?

It would be good to take the tutorials and learn iPhoto - these are for the previous version but the concepts are the same and much of the command is the same - and it would be a worthwhile investment of time to take the iphoto tutorials - http://www.apple.com/findouthow/photos/ - they are very helpful and will save you a lot of time and frustration. - also the tutorials in iPhoto Help will be helpful - while iPhoto is easy and intuitive it does have a learning curve and it will save you time and pain if you spend a few minutes learning the basics
as to organization - events are generally time based and are the basic automatic organization - you can merge and split them to make them work better for you but they are not a good way to do detailed organization - best to leave them time based
albums are logical things that contain photos and are just pointers to the photo in the event so they take no extra space and all changes to a photo anywhere are reflected everywhere
Smart albums are the same except they are automatically filled based on the criteria you set when you create them
Folders are containers that you create and a folder can contain albums, smart albums or other folders so they are a big help in organization - like a vacation folder that holds folders for France, USA, China with each of thos folders holding albums of photos from the country
